A few years ago, we bought a model Lego set of the Ta Mahal (泰姬陵) for my dad’s birthday, hoping to combine his love for architecture with family time as out lives grew busier.
Each evening, my dad and I gathered around the large dining table to plan our line of attack. We faced thousands of tiny white pieces, each packaged with accuracy in numbered plastic bags, accompanied by a thick instruction booklet. The evenings passed quickly, and the building rose before our eyes. We could see our efforts coming to fruition, and as we turned to the boring task of ordering the colored tiles (地砖) on the building’s floor, our conversation too took a turn.
We were stuck by the similarities and differences between Lego blocks and life. We were amazed by how complex the model was and its instruction booklet. We realized the booklet itself was a work of art, beautiful, but also detailed and clear. provided us with the comfort of certainty. We knew if we followed the instructions, we would end up with a model that looked exactly like the picture on the box. We made a mistake, all we had to do was retrace our steps and start again.
Life, however, does not fit together so neatly and rarely provides us with clear instructions, We talked over our respective lives, decisions made, and actions and choices never taken. Dad reflected or a life well lived, and I, in my mid-thirties, on the uncertain path that lay ahead.
Here, we were the architects doing assembling. But out in the world, we were the ones being assembled. We think we’re in control, but our choices are shaped by forces beyond our control. In the face of uncertainty, we have to move on, trusting both in the process and the end result.
Sometimes, on the days I return home, I go to the spare room: to look at the completed Lego model, which reminds me that life is built slowly, with mistakes, an element of uncertainty and no instruction book. It shows that consideration, warmth and faith will result in a life well lived. Like the now dusty model, life itself is not about what we materially create or leave behind, but rather bow we lived it.
4. Which of the following best describes the author’s experience of building the Lego set?
A. Simple and boring. B. Creative and enjoyable.
C. Complex and rewarding. D. Challenging and frustrating.
5. What does the underlined word “assembling” in paragraph 5 probably mean?
A. putting up B. winding up C. tearing up D. picking up
6. How does the author suggest we handle uncertainty in life?
A. By seeking guidance from others. B. By avoiding making any decisions.
C. By focusing on immediate outcomes. D. By moving forward with confidence
7. What does the completed Lego model symbolize for the author?
A. The joy of family bonding. B. The journey of living one’s life.
C. The value of hard work in life. D. The achievement of life goals.
C
Imagine an infinite (无限的) number of monkeys each typing randomly on a typewriter. Will one of them, by any chance, type out the complete works of William Shakespeare one day?
According to the Infinite Monkey Theory, the answer is yes, as long as you give them time long enough. This theory, developed in 1913 by French mathematician Emile Borel, aims to demonstrate that with enough time, random actions can produce ordered and meaningful results. However, as sound as the idea may seem, a new study has shown that it does not hold up in the context of our reality, reported Newsweek.
The study was carried out by Stephen Woodcock and Jay Falletta, two mathematicians at the University of Technology Sydney in Australia. They looked at the possibility of various lengths of texts being typed by 200,000 chimpanzees (黑猩猩) — roughly the current global population of the species. Each chimpanzee was imagined to hit one key per second and continue at this rate for up to a googol (10¹⁰⁰) years, by which time, according to a physics theory, the entire universe will have “died”.
During the study, the mathematicians discovered that within its lifetime, a single chimpanzee has a 5 percent chance of typing the word “bananas”. The likelihood of a chimpanzee producing even a short sentence is also extremely low. For example, the chance of a monkey typing the phrase “I chimp, therefore I am” is calculated to be about one in 1025. So, what are the odds of a chimpanzee producing all 884,647 words of Shakespeare’s works in a googol years? The answer is about 6. 4×107448524, which may as well be zero, noted Science Alert.
In short, while the theory might be mathematically true, it is “potentially misleading in our finite universe”, the mathematicians said. “It shows how assuming infinite resources when analyzing problems can lead to results that are not relevant or realistic in the real world, where resources are always limited,” said Woodcock in a statement.
8. What does the Infinite Monkey Theory suggest?
A. Monkeys ca he trained to write novels,
B. Monkeys are naturally good at leaning.
C. Patterns appear logically form randomness in some way.
D. Randomness leads to meaningful result with enough time.
9. What can we learn from Woodcock and Falletta’s study?
A. They adjusted the limits of randomness.
B. They assessed the applicability of the theory,
C. They found monkeys’ most frequent word.
D. They explored monkeys’ behavioral patterns.
10. How was the study conducted?
A. By analyzing the texts typed by chimpanzees.
B. By observing real chimpanzees typing words.
C. By calculating probabilities based on a typing model.
D. By involving chimpanzees with certain typing abilities,
11. Why does Woodcock believe the theory is “potentially misleading” ?
A. It ignores practical limits. B. It overestimates monkeys’ ability.
C. It applies only to simple problems. D. It conflicts with random-order relationship.
D
Reflecting on GCSE results day, the UK equivalent (等价物) of China’s gaokao results day, I feel a mix of pride and sadness. I am proud this years graduating students achieved fantastic results, but I am also sad because, for many, it marks the end of their study of humanities subjects.
I personally studied history, philosophy, Latin and religious studies, and I strongly advocate for the humanities. Yet, they’re becoming increasingly unpopular, with only 38 percent of students taking at least one humanities course in 2021/22 compared to 60 percent from 2003/4 to2015/16.
The reason for his decline is money. According to the House of Commons Library, students who started university in 2023 will graduate with an estimated debt of £45,600. As a result, studying STEM subjects, which leads to higher earnings, has greater appeal. But humanities students know it’s rarely that simple.
David Rubenstein, co-founder of a global investment firm, argued that a well-rounded humanities education actually results in higher-paying jobs over time, Rubenstein’s achievements in private equity (股权) supports his claim. My experience at private equity firms echoes this. My language skills and ability to analyze complex issues were highly valued by my colleagues. For example, understanding languages and cultures was an advantage in my work related to international business. My history studies sharpened my analytical skills, helping me make persuasive investment recommendations.
Humanities subjects equip students with valuable skills like problem-solving, critical thinking and cultural awareness. Corporate recruiter Andrew Osayemi emphasized the value of a generalist skill set across professions. “Once those beginning themes are learned, you’re on the same level as anyone else, regardless of what they studied,” he said.
As students receive their GCSE results, I urge them to stay open to different subjects and career paths, maximizing their enjoyment of learning and ensuring diverse, well-rounded workforces. After all, a broad educational foundation can be a significant advantage in the complex and ever-changing modern job market.
12. Why does the author feel in part sad about GCSE results day?
A. The humanities are losing popularity. B. Students are avoiding difficult subjects.
C. Humanities courses are being removed. D. Students are failing humanities subjects.
13. What is the reason for the decline in the study of humanities?
A. The restructuring of college entrance exams.
B. The lower costs of studying humanities subjects.
C. The higher earnings of graduates of STEM subjects.
D. The rise of STEM subjects in university programs.
14. What is David Rubenstein’s view on humanities education?
A. It gives students an edge in all fields. B. It is highly valued in academic settings.
C. It builds skills essential in private equity. D. It offers financial benefits in the long run.
15. How does the author suggest students approach their education?
A. Choose STEM subjects for job security. B. Keep their subject choices broad.
C. Specialize early for career success. D. Stick to subjects they enjoy the most.

Let’s get something straight right off the top. I’m not exactly the biggest guy on the hockey team when I was in my middle school. Okay, the truth is that I’m the smallest player in the league, Hockey is a fast game. It’s like soccer, except it takes place on the ice and you use sticks and a puck (冰球) instead of a soccer ball. The fact that I weigh half as much as some players means these guys can hold me off using just one arm. I supposed I shouldn’t be on the team.
My coach calls me the “Angry Chihuahua”. The first time my coach called me that, I didn’t like it at all. I mean, who wants to be named after a small Mexican dog? But later, I realized he was praising me. One time, I was trying to get the puck from a huge player. I couldn’t approach, so I kept switching from one side to the other. I guess that was quite a funny sight because when I got back to the bench, the coach said I looked like an angry Chihuahua, I didn’t like it at that moment. However, something happened a few days later, and now, I wear this name with pride.
In fact, the team laughed when the coach called me the Angry Chihuahua. I pretended to laugh, but inside I was hurt. One player who didn’t laugh was Eric. He went out of his way to make me feel at home on the team.
A week later, we played against another team. They were all huge and one of them was the biggest in the league, I knew one big hit from him could leave me injured. In the game, I was skating wit the puck and I passed it to Eric. He was about to take a shot when this big guy took his stick and hit Eric on the leg, Eric dropped like a stone n the ice and cried in pain.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;2.开头已给出。
I saw the guy laughing, and I just couldn’t take it!

Joining the club is a good chance to exercise, meet people and get a taste of Chinese culture as well. We meet every Friday afternoon at the school hall, practising Tai Chi with the guidance of experienced instructors.
If you’re interested, let me know.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

【答案】I saw the guy laughing, and I just couldn’t take it! So angry was I that I dashed towards him, yelling at him at the top of my lungs. The guy, who was twice the size of me, turned around and pushed me. I went flying backwards, sliding along the ice. I hit the ice so hard that I couldn’t breathe. But when I looked up, my teammates had all come over to pull him off me. They shoved him away and then he was given a ten-game suspension.
From that moment on, my teammates always treated me with the greatest respect. I think they were shocked to see that someone so small would dare to stand up to such a huge bully, which won me their admiration. Also, Eric treated me like his brother from then on as he told me gratefully, “A friend in need is a friend in deed.” Ever since then, I’ve learned to control my emotions, but everyone in the league heard the story. They all know that although I may be small, I don’t give up. I guess it’s not so bad being known as the Angry Chihuahua after all.
