A father was sitting at his desk and looking at his bills when his young son rushed in and announced, “Dad, because today is your birthday and you’re 40 years old. I’m going to give you 40 kisses, one for each year!” When the boy started making good on his words (履行诺言), the father shouted, “Andrew, don’t do it now. I’m too busy!”
The boy soon became silent as tears fell down from his big blue eyes. Feeling sorry, the father said, “You can finish later.”
The boy said nothing but quietly walked away. That evening the father said, “Come and finish the kisses now, Andrew!” But the boy didn’t.
Unfortunately, a few days later after the father’s birthday, the boy had an accident and died. His sad father wrote, “If only I could tell him how sorry I am for my thoughtless words, and how much my heart is hurting.”
Love is a two-way street. We must warmly accept any loving act, or others will take it as a “No” and it can leave a scar (伤痕). If we don’t receive love, our life will lose its true meaning.

In the 2024 New Year, there appeared some words “龙行龘龘” “前程朤朤” “生活鱻鱻”, and so on. Do you know how to write these Chinese characters correctly?
If you can’t, you’re not alone. Nowadays, most people are typing into computers instead of writing on paper. We type Chinese characters mostly according to their pronunciation. The result is to recognize characters without remembering how to write them.
Once China Youth Daily did a survey of 2,517 people, in which 98.9 percent said they had once forgotten how to write a common Chinese character.
Compared to adults, teenagers are better at writing Chinese characters because they spend more time learning and practicing at school. However, the impact of digital technology cannot be ignored.
“Many students are addicted to digital devices such as electronic dictionaries and computers to help with their studies. Overuse of these tools will make students too lazy to think and write,” He Yu, head of a research team for Chinese teaching at a Beijing high school said. Such worries have brought about a popular TV show titled Chinese Spelling Hero, which focuses on Chinese character writing among teenagers. Organizations like the China Calligraphers Association (中国书法协会) are also working to train more teachers in calligraphy.
Interestingly, calligraphy teachers can’t always avoid the effects of modern technology. Shen Bin is a calligraphy teacher at a primary school in Beijing. She admitted that it’s common for teachers like her to forget certain words.
“The calligraphy class is also a good chance for me to remember how to write,” she said.

Many animals do strange things before an earthquake, which may be important. Earthquakes can kill people and knock down houses. The animals may help you to save lives.
Some animals make a lot of noise before an earthquake Farmers have told about this. Dogs that are usually quiet would start to howl (吠叫). Horses on farm would run around in circles. Mice would leave their holes and run away. Cows would give less milk.
In a town in Italy, cats raced down the street in a group. That happened only a few hours before an earthquake. In San Francisco, a man kept tiny pet frogs. On Sunday, the frogs jumped around more than ever. They made loud noises like bigger frogs. That night, an earthquake struck the city.

Both the young and the old may feel lonely. A three-year-old child will feel lonely when it is left alone, and an old man over eighty years old is often afraid to live alone, too.
Some people feel lonely because they may not have enough time to make friends. Not only the quiet, shy people may feel lonely, but some active and outgoing people are sometimes afraid to talk and make friends with others. They always try to keep other people away from them. They may seem to have lots of friends, but inside they are hurting.
Are you lonely? If your answer is “yes”, you may need to work hard enough! Here are some tips to think about:
★To be wanted and needed is a big answer to loneliness. Is there any way you can help other people? Try to do something helpful for others even if you are very busy. By helping other people, we find friends and escape from loneliness.
★Do you have an interest or hobby? Find a group of people with this interest and join them.
★Live in the real world! The world on the Internet is not a real world and it is very different from the real life. The students asleep in class are mostly those who often surf the Internet all the night. As a result, they’ll get lost in the real world.
★Don’t wait for someone to phone or email you. Instead you can call them. And if they seem too busy, it doesn’t mean you are not welcomed. Try another time!
★When you’ve done anything wrong to other people, don’t hesitate to say sorry. You must do that even if you find it hard to open your mouth.

C. living in the real world D. sickness
