In a classroom in rural Kenya’s Rift Valley, a student, Priscilla Sitienei, takes notes alongside her fellow classmates. She wears the same school uniform. However, there is something different.
Sitienei is more than 80 years older than them. February 11 was Sitienei’s ninety-ninth birthday. “The main reason for my returning to school was that I would like to become a doctor because I used to be a midwife (助产士),” she said. She added that her children supported her decision.
Back in 2003, the government of the East African country began helping to pay for the cost of primary schooling. This has allowed some older members of society, who had missed out on education in their younger days, to go back to school.
This has given Sitienei more than an education. She has become a film star. Sitienei travelled to Paris last year for the launch (发布) of a film about her journey. It is titled Gogo, which means grandmother in her native Kalenjin language. She will also be heading to New York City soon for a showing of the film there.
Sitienei is in her sixth year of primary school. She said her aims were far more practical than becoming a movie star. She said, “I also enjoy school activities, including physical education classes. They keep me fit. I get to jump around, even though not as much as they do, but I at least move my body. That is my joy.”
Sitienei shares her wide experience and knowledge with the children. Her teachers also use her experience to keep the peace during lessons. Her class teacher, Leonida Talaam, said, “I use Sitienei to help control the class. And it works! When I go outside, the class remains silent.”
24. What does Sitienei mainly intend to do by going to school?
A. Take up a new career. B. Make herself popular.
C. Have more classmates. D. Return to society.
25. Why did Sitienei go to Paris last year?
A. She wanted to meet her grandma. B. She wanted to learn the native language.
C. Her movie would come out there. D. Her new journey plan was to be announced.
26. Which of the following best describes Sitienei?
A. Dependent. B. Creative. C. Honest. D. Energetic.
27. What does Sitienei help her teachers do?
A. Keep order in class. B. Organize school activities.
C. Stop the students going out. D. Inspire the students to work out.

Hu Sixun27, is a study tour mentor (导师) in Tonggu County, a famous Red tourism destination in East China’s Jiangxi province. “Many people assume that my job is the same as a tour guide, but they are different positions,” Hu said. “Our target audience are students from primary and middle schools. In addition to being a guide, we need to serve as a teacher during trips to improve their learning and help them build hands-on capabilities (动手能力),” she added.
Gao Hongmei, a study tour mentor in Shanxi, said her duties include planning activities and courses based on children’s needs and the scenic spots. A study tour not only entertains but informs. The study tour mentors must take different approaches for children of different ages to arouse their interests and make the learning process more enjoyable.
While the industry is still at the early stage, Hu is optimistic about its prospects. Last month, study tour mentors were recognized as a new profession in the culture and tourism industry by the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security. It is not only an acknowledgment of workers in the field but will create more choices for university graduates. Besides, it is helpful to boost domestic 13 hands-on education, which is often underrated during the basic education stage. Study tours have gained huge popularity in recent years, partly due to China’s “double reduction” policy (双减政策), which is aimed to ease the burden of homework and off-campus tutoring on primary and middle school students.
As the industry develops, it will require a growing number of professionals in the future, indicating a broad employment prospect. Data from the China Tourism Academy showed that the number of study tour companies has increased fast over the past few years; it exceeded 30,000 last year. In addition, the country now has nearly 100 colleges and universities offering the program of study tour management and services. Their graduates will become a major force in the industry.
28. Which of the following is the responsibility of a study tour mentor?
A. To develop students’ farming ability.
B. To stimulate children’s interest in learning.
C. To increase children’s interest in traveling.
D. To take care of students’ daily living.

A. It promotes all-round education. B. It has less choices for job seekers.
C. It pays high wages for workers. D. It is recognized by the authorities.
30. What can we learn about the new profession from the last paragraph?
A. It is out of educational trend. B. It becomes more and more unpopular.
C. It has great prospects. D. It is hated by lots of people.

67. Atlanta was a Greek princess. She was very beautiful and could run faster than any man in Greece. But she was not allowed to run and win glory for herself in the Olympic Games. She was so angry that she said to her father that she would not marry anyone who could not run faster than her. Her father said that she must marry, so Atlanta made a bargain with him. She said to him, “These are my rules. When a man says he wants to marry me, I will run against him. If he cannot run as fast as me, he will be killed. No one will be pardoned.”
Many kings and princes wanted to marry Atlanta, but when they heard of rules they knew it was hopeless. So many of them sadly went home, but others stayed to run the race. There was a man called Hippo Menes who was amazed when he heard of Atlanta’s rues. “Why are these men so foolish?” he thought. “Why will they let themselves be killed because they can not run as fast as this princess?” However, when he saw Atlanta come out of her house to run, Hippomenes changed his mind “I will marry Atlanta-or die!” he said.
The race started and although the man ran very fast, Atlanta ran faster. As Hippomenes watched he thought, “How can I run as fast as Atlanta?” He went to ask the Greek Goddess of Love for help. She promised to help him and gave him three golden apples. She said, “Throw an apple in front of Atlanta when she is running past. When she stops to pick it up, you will be able to run past her and win.”
Hippomenes took the apples and went to the King. He said, “I want to marry Atlanta.” The King was sad to see another man die, but Hippomenes said, “I will marry her-or die!” So the race began.
So the next day Hippomenes was waiting when Atlanta came out. She thought, “I don’t want this man to die.” So she said to her father, “Tell him to go away. The race will not be run today.” But Hippomenes said, “These are her rules: She will marry the man who runs faster than her. Come on-let’s run! ”

Paragraph 2:
When she finally caught up with Hippomenes the second time, he threw the third and last apple.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Paragraph 1:When the race started, Hippomenes ran fast, but Atlanta ran even faster. He had no choice but to take out the first golden apple and threw it in front of her. Driven by curiosity, Atlanta came to an abrupt stop and picked it up. So Hippomenes took the chance to run past her. Realizing that might be a trick, she took up all her strength to catch up with him in time. Just then, Hippomenes threw another golden apple over her head and far to the side. As expected, she stopped to pick it up again. Hippomenes clenched his teeth and was running past. Nevertheless, within seconds, Atlanta was approaching. It seemed hopeless.
Paragraph 2: When she finally caught up with Hippomenes the second time, he threw the third and last apple. As it flew through the air, Atlanta was spellbound by the magic of golden apples. She impulsively ran towards the golden apple, bent down and picked it up. However, the golden apples were too heavy for her to bear. Hippomenes was taking the lead again. There was no chance for her to surpass him. By this time he was almost at the end of the race. Observing the rules in the bargain, they got married after Hippomenes won the race. Thanks to the Goddess, they lived happily ever after.
