Kawasaki disease(川崎病) is every parent’s nightmare(噩梦). This rare illness is the chief cause of acquired heart disease in babies and young children. Historically, it’s been difficult for doctors to spot it, until recently, when a young inventor developed an app that can find it out. Ellen’s invention does research on a photograph of the child and looks for clear signs of Kawasaki disease, like a swollen tongue. It’s a great invention that likely wouldn’t have come about if it all weren’t so personal.
When Ellen, a San Diego native, was 5 years old, her parents rushed her kid sister to the hospital. Three-year-old Kate had a fever, reddened eyes and swelling in her hands and tongue.
At first the puzzled doctors guessed that Kate had a flu. But when her condition didn’t improve, she returned to the Emergency Room, where she was diagnosed with Kawasaki disease and treated immediately. In time she shook off the illness without suffering damage to her heart, making her one of the lucky ones.
10 years later, Ellen, needing a project for a high school science fair, recalled her sister’s illness. “It was a puzzle I wanted to solve,” says Ellen, now a student at Stanford. So she set out to do just that. Using data, she invented an app that can identify the physical signs of Kawasaki disease from a photo. It works similarly to apps that can identify birds and plants. The app is expected to appear soon on the Kawasaki Disease Foundation’s website, kdfoundation. org.
As for Kate, Ellen says the little girl with the mysterious disease is now an energetic high school junior with dreams of becoming an environmental engineer.
24.What can be learned about Kawasaki disease from paragraph 1?
A.It occurs in everyone. B.It may lead to acquired heart disease.
C.It is difficult to identify now. D.It can be treated successfully by Ellen.
25.Why did Kate return to the Emergency Room?
A.To shake off her flu. B.To get good luck.
C.To receive further examination. D.To escape damaging her heart.
26.What inspired Ellen to invent the app?
A.Doctors’ request. B.A science fair.
C.Kate’s illness. D.Stanford’s homework.
27.What does the text mainly talk about?
A.An invention for Kawasaki disease. B.A joyful story of a sick girl.
C.The treatment for Kawasaki disease. D.A united and happy family.
C
People flood into cities for understandable reasons: more job opportunities, more cultural diversity and larger communities. Yet living in a concrete-walled, green-poor, urban environment takes away from our-very essence our fundamental need to be close to nature. We can’t quite break the link with our evolutionary (进化的) past and part ways with our origins. Surrounding ourselves with walls and screens, we tend to pay a price, often with our health and quality of life.
In Japan, a populous country with vast expanses of green forests, an ancient tradition, known as shinrin-yoku, or forest bathing, tries to balance out the pressure from urban living. It’s the practice of spending prolonged periods of time with trees to gain from their many health benefits. In a book hitting shelves this month, Forest Bathing: How Trees Can Help You Find Health and Happiness, Dr. Qing Li, the world’s foremost expert in forest medicine, introduces readers to the valuable practice of forest bathing. The book features more than 100 color photographs of forests around the world. One may reject this kind of book as yet less convincing, but the point is that Li has not just practiced forest bathing, but has also studied its impact on people’s health through numerous scientific studies. He has data to support his claims, collected in a long list of expert-reviewed articles at the end of the book.
The book lists studies that consistently show a substantial reduction of stress hormones (应激激素). Essential tree oils found in forest air increase energy levels by more than 30 percent and improve a general state of well-being, including improvement in sleep.
Scientific results apart, the concept of forest bathing shouldn’t be so surprising. Who hasn’t felt an inner sense of well-being when walking along a quiet forest path? Stepping into a forest, away from the artificial sounds and smells of urban life, does feel like pushing a life reset button, reestablishing a connection with our deepest needs.
To celebrate this wonderful book and what seems to be a rediscovery of forest bathing in our life, I’m going to go now—to take my forest bath.
28. What is stressed in paragraph 1?
A. The harm of electronics. B. The downside of city life.
C. The consequences of lack of workout. D. The reasons for pursuit of urban living.
29. What’s the book aimed at?
A. Promoting a lifestyle. B. Presenting research results.
C. Stating the significance of walks. D. Appealing for forest conservation.
30. Which of the following can best describe Dr. Li’s book?
A. One-sided. B. Sharply worded.
C. Evidence-based. D. Widely recognized.
31. How is the benefit of forest bathing further proved in paragraph 4?
A. Through clinical cases. B Through practical experience.
C. Through official statistics. D. Through Japanese experts’ studies.
D
Scientists have created the first full-sized digital model of the Titanic. The model will allow scientists to study the Titanic in ways that have never been possible before.
The Titanic sank in the Atlantic Ocean in 1912. It was the largest ship of its time, and was thought to be unable to go down below the surface of water. But four days after it left Southampton, England, the Titanic hit an iceberg (冰山) and sank early the next day, killing some 1,500 people. The sinking is one of the most famous disasters in history.
The Titanic broke into two pieces, and sank to the sea floor, about 3.8 kilometers below the surface of the ocean. The location of the wreck (沉船) wasn’t discovered until 1985. Since then, many research teams have visited the site with undersea robots, whose trips have resulted in lots of pictures and videos of the wreck. But even these only allow scientists to study one area of the wreck at a time.
Now, two companies — an undersea technology company called Magellan and the movie company Atlantic Productions — have created a 3-D model of the Titanic by sending two undersea robots down to the Titanic. The robots recorded both of the main pieces of the Titanic (the front and the back), as well as other hits of the wreck on the sea floor. Over six weeks, they took high-quality videos and over 715,000 pictures, based on which scientists created the 3-D model of the Titanic. Using it, users will be able to see the ship from all angles.
The companies say the 3-D model will help scientists, enabling them to study the Titanic in great detail and study how the Titanic broke down, which could help them learn more about thousands of other shipwrecks also lying on the sea floor. And of course, scientists hope the model will help them better understand what happened when the Titanic sank.
32.What does the author say about the Titanic?
A.It was supposedly unsinkable. B.Its sinking is the best-known disaster.
C.Its voyage should last for 4 days. D.It tops the list of England's ships in size.
33.What message is conveyed in the third paragraph?
A.More studies are encouraged on the Titanic.
B.Enthusiasm for the Titanic never fades away.
C.The exploration of the Titanic is far from easy.
D.New discoveries have been made about the Titanic.
34.Which of the following plays a key role in creating the 3-D model?
A.The previous findings about the shipwreck. B.The devotion of the scientists.
C.The cooperation between the two companies. D.The complete picture of the wreck.
35.The 3-D model is expected to ___________.
A.help rebuild other shipwrecks underwater B.give scientists new insights into the Titanic
C.allow the public to fully admire the Titanic D.reproduce the grandness of the large ship
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。
As I was standing in a long line to get into the grocery store waiting to buy fruits and vegetables, I realized I could turn my backyard into a garden. It enables me to grow my own food and save waiting time. 36
Before you start your work, think about the space you’re changing. Is your space a yard? A rooftop? 37 Watch out for the temperature and find out which plants adapt well in your region. Just create a vision based on your location.
Set the stage with healthy soil. It’s full of billions of bacteria and helps plant roots grow. Then consider the structure of the soil. 38 For example, carrots want sandier soil, so their roots can more easily grow. Tomatoes want more clay for keeping water.
39 The decision depends on your preferences, space, what you’re growing and your budget. However, you should stay away from containers that have been used for poisonous materials. They can bring chemicals into the soil as they break down from sunlight.
Should I plant seeds or transplants? In general, a seed is like a baby. It needs tons of care, but not everyone knows how to get it to survive. Transplants are for starters. 40 They still need your love but they’re not going to fall down and kill themselves.
With a little planning, I was able to watch three adorable baby trees take root in my yard. One of them recently had its first fruit—sweet little peaches. The yard has totally transformed too.
A.When is the best time of a year for gardening?
B.Different plants require different soil.
C.How much sunlight does it get?
D.You can buy your gardening tools at a hardware store.
E.They are plants that are a few inches high grown in small pots.
F.You can start a garden in pots or containers.
G.Here is some of my experience on breaking ground in my backyard.

I was in New York City on a school trip. I called home from a pay phone, and my little sister, Alex, said four envelopes had arrived: Georgetown, Cornell, William and Mary and the University of Massachusetts. She then opened and read them to me in her ten-year-old voice: “We regret that we do not have a place for you...” Rejected from Georgetown. “You were one of many qualified candidates...” Rejected from Cornell. And number seventy-three on a waiting list of seventy-five at William and Mary. Accepted to U Mass, my safety school.
I didn’t digest the rejections immediately. I toured the United Nations, took train home and went back to school. Then I realized that other people had gotten into schools they really wanted to go to. Up to that point in my seventeen years, I hadn’t really failed at anything. I got good grades, made the school team and scored well on my SATs. I hadn’t experienced any major disappointments in my life, no deaths, no disease, no divorce, no cavities (龋齿) even. So being rejected seemed disastrous.
I had always assumed I’d go to one of the“good schools.”I really wanted to be chosen: This is the place for smart people, and we want you. U Mass, on the other hand, had the reputation of being a party school to which, come September, I’d be headed with the guy who sat next to me in tenth-grade history and who, during tests, left his book open on the floor and turned the pages with his feet.
I did not get active like my friend Heather, who, having been rejected by her first choice, made I Love Lucy-style plans to drive to the Duke campus with her soccer ball and her science-fair project to show the admissions board(招生委员会) exactly what they were rejecting. I simply said things like, “I’ve decided to give up the undergraduate degree and take a cake-decorating course.” The subtext in this was: I’m stupid. The world isn’t fair.

1.C【原文】M: I just love the piano. There’s an endless variety of music that can be played on it.
W: I really enjoy it too. I used to be really good at piano actually. But I stopped playing in high school because I was so busy.
2.A【原文】M: Can I offer you another piece of cake?
W: Thank you. If I had it, I would burst. It’s nice of you to prepare this meal for me.
M: Great. As long as you enjoyed it.
3.B【原文】W: So, tell me sir, when did you first notice the problem with your leg? I will examine it later.
M: I was at a restaurant with my wife and friends about three weeks ago. I suddenly felt a sharp pain.
4.C【原文】W: George, where have you been? You said nine o’clock. I’ve been waiting here for an hour and a half since then.
M: I’m really sorry, Jenny. I set off at eight this morning, and would you believe I’ve been stuck in traffic?
5.A【原文】W: Do you know if the last bus has gone?
M: I’m afraid it left a couple of minutes ago.
W: Oh, no! Do you know where I can get a taxi to the airport?
M: You can go to the Red Star Square near the railway station. There are usually a few taxis there.
6.B 7.C【原文】M: I came as soon as I could.
W: Did Caroline call you just now?
M: No, it was last night, but I didn’t have the car. I’m sorry I wasn’t here to help.
W: It’s OK. You missed the drama, but she’s OK now. She’s just a little shaky.
M: Poor Mom. I thought she would be dead, the way Caroline explained it to me.
W: Oh no, she’s tough. She didn’t even break any bones. Just a few marks.
M: Where did she fall?
W: The carpet on the stairs was loose and she went head first.
M: Wow. She had a lucky escape.
8.A 9.A【原文】W: What do you think of the development?
M: You’re creating a whole new community.
W: We certainly are — 400 homes, 40 shops and two schools.
M: Don’t you worry that you’re taking more green space away from the city?
W: Look, Mr. Sharples, you must understand that this city needs more affordable housing.
M: But surely we have to consider the environment as well. Will you be living here or will you be in a suburb where you can see trees everywhere?
W: I’d gladly live in one of these homes. In fact, I’ll let you into a secret. I grew up in this area.
M: Really? I didn’t know that.
W: Oh yes, and it wasn’t the perfect place you imagine. It was safe and not so crowded, but there was rubbish and dirt everywhere.
10.B 11.C 12.B【原文】W: What’s the matter?
M: That’s it. I give up.
W: What do you mean?
M: This guy is amazing. I’ve never seen anybody play the guitar on stage like that in person. I might as well stop trying.
W: But you’re good as well.
M: I’m not in the same league as him. It’s time that I changed my profession and started selling insurance or cooking people’s dinners.
W: Don’t be silly. Just use him as inspiration. Be the best you can be. Lots of people like your music and I do.
M: Thank you for your faith.
W: Remember, the man who we’re watching once couldn’t play the guitar at all. He had to learn and practice to get to this level.
M: I bet he practiced every day of his life.
W: Have confidence in your ability, and enjoy the show.

【原文】M: I hate to tell you this, but the picnic has been cancelled.
W: Because of the rain?
M: Yes.
W: Did you still play your soccer game?
M: Oh sure, we finished it ten minutes ago. It was hard playing in the mud. Everyone was slipping and falling.
W: You’re crazy. Um, my lab experiment has also been cancelled, so I don’t have much to do tonight.
M: You know, my roommate is an art major. He’s always telling me about the Minneapolis Institute of Art. It’s not far from here, and it’s free. I hear they even have a number of things from China.
W: Really? I can’t believe it!
M: It’s even more than that. There’s even a separate hall for Chinese collections.
W: I wonder what kinds of Chinese collections are shown there.
M: My roommate says there are many interesting things like Chinese water paintings, handcrafts, jewelries, and other fascinating stuff. We can go there and look around for a while , and you can tell me all about them.
W: That’s great! Let’s go.

Good evening, gentlemen and boys! Thank you for being here this evening. We’re here to congratulate the top achievers of this year. The boys here have worked hard in order to be a part of this ceremony.
Recognition of achievement can make us push ourselves and reach our full potential. The prizewinners are a true representation of everything that we value here at Hampton School. I have every confidence that you young men will be precisely the kind of young people who will make a positive difference to the country and the world. Your success will be built on being true to yourself. You should recognize your problems and doubts as well as your positive qualities. I remember listening to an interview with Andy Murray, one of the top tennis players in the world. After he was defeated in the first round of a tournament by a much lower ranked player, the media went crazy. However, Murray was straightforward and wise. “Nobody died here, “ he said, “I only lost a tennis match, nothing more. “ We are proud of our prizewinners today. They should be proud of themselves. But let’s be clear, if you link motivation to winning prizes in life, you set yourself up for disappointment. The greatest prize of all is that you can look yourself in the eye and say, “I tried my absolute best. ”

66.Dear Lucia,
To promote Chinese Hanfu culture, our class held an activity in the city park last Saturday. I know you are interested in Hanfu so I am writing to share with you the activity.
We all wore Hanfu outfits and took our school bus to the city park in the morning. In the park we demonstrated the etiquette of Hanfu, performed dances of Tang Dynasty, and took photos with passersby. Besides, we showed Hanfu styles of different dynasties as well as the rich culture behind them.
With our work, many people got to know more about Hanfu. All of us felt excited and fulfilled at the end of the day. What a pity you were not with us! Attached are some activity photos. I really hope you’ll like them.
Yours,
Li Hua

67. I remained bitter until one day, my father sat me down. Having noticed my sadness, he asked what was troubling me. I opened my heart to him, pouring out my frustrations about the rejections and my fears for the future. “I always thought I’d get into one of the good schools, Dad. Now I feel like a failure, like I’m not good enough.” After listening attentively for a while, my father gently reminded me of all my accomplishments — the countless projects I had excelled in, the teams I had led, and the awards I had earned. He concluded with a reassuring smile. “I understand how painful these rejections feel, but they are not a reflection of your worth. I know you have the strength to overcome this challenge, and I will he here to support you every step of the way.”
Deeply touched by his words. I began to assess my situation. My father helped me realize that dwelling on the rejections would only hinder me from reaching my full potential.True success is not defined by prestige, but by how we respond to life’s challenges. Changing my mindset from self-pity to determination, I decided to embrace the opportunities at the University of Massachusetts, knowing my journey would be shaped by my willingness to grow. With a renewed sense of purpose, I dived into my studies, joined campus organizations, and discovered new passions that enriched my life in ways I had never imagined. The initial disappointment soon gave way to anticipation and excitement. Looking back now, I am forever grateful to my father for his unwavering support and wisdom, which have been invaluable in shaping the person I am today.
