Which country might have invented the first cooling device? A. Egypt. B. Rome. C. China. 19. Which cooling method has the longest history? A. Wet plants. B. Cold water. C. Hand fans. 20. Where is the passage most probably taken from? A. A radio programme. B. A culture magazine. C. A history book. B 18. A 19. C 20. The desire to stay cool is, of course, nothing new. The ancient Egyptians and Romans employed various techniques to cool down their buildings from the outside heat. Some people have even claimed that the first air conditioning device was invented in ancient Egypt. The ancient Egyptians would hang wet plants outside their windows, and when the air came into the house, it would be cooled by the cool water drops on the plants. The Romans understood that if they could bring cold water under their houses, then the temperature inside would fall. And if we really stretch the meaning of the phrase “air conditioning”, then hand fans have been used since the very beginning of the history. People realized that they could move air by waving something and it would cool them down for a while. The Chinese inventor Ding Huan went a step further in the second century and invented a fan that could go around, similar to fans we might see today, although it was powered by servants. That’s all for today. Please stay tuned for more updates. A THE BEST GARDEN ART IDEAS OF 2024-Bring Your Garden to Life Add a touch of color and magic to your garden with the Outfany Magical Metal Windmill (风车). At first, the small shop struggled as there were many similar products on the market. Yang realized the need for a unique brand to stand out from the competition. During a hike in Fanjing Mountain in July 2011, Yang accidentally cut her hand on a thorny leaf. This gave her an idea; “There are leaf-vein bookmarks and leaf-vein paintings. Why has nobody created leaf-vein embroidery yet?” Obviously, the reason behind this is that embroidering on leaves requires delicate skills that few possess. Yang Li collected thousands of leaves from Fanjing Mountain and processed them by steaming, boiling, and tanning them to expose their veins. While the leaves become soft, they are also extremely fragile. The biggest challenge was improving the flexibility of the leaves. After consulting local expert Shen Min, she learned that soaking them in acidic water could make them tough enough for embroidery. Through continuous learning and practice, she succeeded in creating her first piece of leaf-vein embroidery, which perfectly combines traditional embroidery patterns with the natural textures of the leaves. By adding traditional designs from the Miao, Tujia, and Dong ethnic groups, she produced art that exhibits a unique aesthetic appeal of traditional embroidery with contemporary craftsmanship. Yang notes that typically, only those with decades of embroidery experience can independently complete the entire leaf-embroidery process, which is fewer than 20 people in Tongren from 2011 to now. Two years later, Yang opened an embroidery processing factory and offered jobs to more than 500 laid-off female workers, rural women, and people with disabilities. “Guizhou is a province with a large number of ethnic groups and has a long history of ethnic embroidery skills,” she says. “I will keep doing the leaf-vein embroidery for the rest of my life because it is meaningful.” 24. What inspired Yang Li to create leaf-vein embroidery? A. Her love for Miao embroidery. B. The discovery of a special leaf. C. An accidental injury to her hand. D. A decrease in her shop’s earnings. 25. What is the biggest challenge for Yang Li? A. Softening the leaves. B. Exposing veins of leaves. C. Collecting suitable leaves. D. Making leaves more flexible. 26. What do we know about Yang Li’s leaf-vein embroidery? A. It is costly to complete a single piece. B. It is well-received by international consumers. C. It is demanding for cooperation between craftsmen. D. It is a unique combination of artistic elements. 27. Which of the following words can best describe Yang Li? A. Creative and dedicated. B. Ambitious and cautious. C. Passionate and humorous. D. Optimistic and considerate. C 25. D 26. D 27. 根据文章第一段“During a hike in Fanjing Mountain in July 2011, Yang accidentally cut her hand on a thorny leaf. This gave her an idea; “There are leaf-vein bookmarks and leaf-vein paintings. Why has nobody created leaf-vein embroidery yet?”(2011年7月,在梵净山的一次徒步旅行中,杨丽不小心被一片带刺的叶子划伤了手。这给了她一个灵感:“有叶脉书签和叶脉画,为什么没有人尝试过叶脉刺绣呢?”)”可知,是手部的意外受伤激发了她创作叶脉刺绣的想法。故选C。 【25题详解】 细节理解题。根据文章第二段“The biggest challenge was improving the flexibility of the leaves.(最大的挑战在于提高叶子的柔韧性)”可知,最大的挑战是提高叶子的柔韧性,使叶子更有弹性。 根据文章第三段“Through continuous learning and practice, she succeeded in creating her first piece of leaf-vein embroidery, which perfectly combines traditional embroidery patterns with the natural textures of the leaves.(经过不断的学习和实践,她成功地创造了她的第一件叶脉刺绣作品,完美地将传统的刺绣图案与叶子的自然纹理结合在一起)”可知,她的叶脉刺绣是传统刺绣图案与自然纹理的结合,是艺术元素的独特组合。 根据文章第三段“Through continuous learning and practice, she succeeded in creating her first piece of leaf-vein embroidery, which perfectly combines traditional embroidery patterns with the natural textures of the leaves.(经过不断的学习和实践,她成功地创造了她的第一件叶脉刺绣作品,完美地将传统的刺绣图案与叶子的自然纹理结合在一起)”可知,她把传统刺绣图案与自然纹理相结合,创造了叶脉刺绣作品,她非常富有创造性,根据文章最后一段“Two years later, Yang opened an embroidery processing factory and offered jobs to more than 500 laid-off female workers, rural women, and people with disabilities. “Guizhou is a province with a large number of ethnic groups and has a long history of ethnic embroidery skills,” she says. “I will keep doing the leaf-vein embroidery for the rest of my life because it is meaningful.”(两年后,杨丽开设了一家刺绣加工厂,为超过500名下岗女工、农村妇女和残疾人提供了工作机会。“贵州是一个拥有大量少数民族的省份,有着悠久的民族刺绣技艺历史,”她说,“我将毕生致力于叶脉刺绣,因为它意义重大”)”可知,她致力于帮助当地女性就业,富有奉献精神。故选A项。 C By its very nature, insurance is designed to protect customers against future risk. So, why do so many providers invest in the fossil fuel industries that are going to cause us and the planet so much harm? This is the question that inspired Matt Criddle to launch Naturesave Insurance. Each year, Naturesave takes 10 percent of the income it receives from its home and travel premiums (保险费), and puts it in a connected charity, the Naturesave Trust. The trust hit the£1m milestone earlier this year, some 25 years after it was founded. Through the trust, that sum has been donated to gassroots environmental projects across the U.K., such as community agriculture projects, repair cafes and many more initiatives that benefit people and planet. When Naturesave Insurance was established in 1993, giving away part of a firm’s income or profits was considered unusual — especially the idea that small businesses might choose to do so. It remains rare to give away such a high percentage, although there is a global trend toward companies becoming more charitable. So, what motivated Naturesave to go down this route? “I wanted to put right some of the wrongs I saw in the insurance industry and build something that was both ethical and sustainable,” Criddle explains. The decision to give away so much has helped to shape the business, Criddle explains. “First of all, it attracts staff who share a sense that they are doing something with meaning, so you end up with people in the organization who actually care. The same thing happens with our partners: our business and customer relationships are strong, as evidenced by our high retention rate, around 96 percent.” Naturesave is certainly on to something. A landmark Harvard University report found companies that practice “compassionate (悲悯的) capitalism” perform 10 times better than those that don’t. More recently, research by the World Economic Forum concluded that “business-as-usual is no longer adequate for the challenges of the 21st century”. The traditional focus on shareholder value is neither right nor fair; it found: corporate purpose should be about solutions, not just profits. 28. Why did Criddle set up Naturesave Insurance? A. To transform the nature of insurance. B. To challenge traditional business models. C. To redefine the role of insurers in society. D. To make use of emerging market trends. 29. What can be inferred about Criddle from paragraph 3? A. He prioritizes moral development. B. He has a vision beyond profitability. C. He advocates for insurance reforms. D. He values the power of small firms. 30. What does the underlined word “retention” in paragraph 4 probably refer to? A. Income from business. B. Employment of staff members. C. Action of keeping customers. D. Reward for doing charity. 31. What does the author try to do in the last paragraph? A. Criticize profit-driven business practices. B. Predict the rise of compassionate capitalism. C. Propose a new definition of corporate success. D. Demonstrate Naturesave’s business philosophy. C 29. B 30. C 31. 根据文章第一段“By its very nature, insurance is designed to protect customers against future risk. So, why do so many providers invest in the fossil fuel industries that are going to cause us and the planet so much harm? This is the question that inspired Matt Criddle to launch Naturesave Insurance.(就其本质而言,保险旨在保护客户抵御未来风险。那么,为什么众多保险提供商要投资化石燃料行业呢?要知道,这个行业会给我们以及地球带来诸多危害。正是这个问题启发了Matt Criddle创立了Naturesave Insurance)。”以及文章第二段“Each year, Naturesave takes 10 percent of the income it receives from its home and travel premiums (保险费),and puts it in a connected charity, the Naturesave Trust.(每年,Naturesave Insurance都会从其房屋保险和旅行保险保费收入中提取 10%,并将这笔钱投入与之相关联的慈善机构—— Naturesave Trust)。” 根据文章第三段““I wanted to put right some of the wrongs I saw in the insurance industry and build something that was both ethical and sustainable,” Criddle explains.(“我想要纠正我在保险行业中看到的一些不当之处,打造一个既符合道德规范又可持续发展的企业。” Criddle解释道。)”可知,Criddle在创立公司时,不仅仅关注盈利,还希望纠正行业错误,打造一个有道德、可持续发展的企业,体现了他有超越盈利的愿景。故选B。 【30题详解】 词句猜测题。根据划线单词所在句“The same thing happens with our partners: our business and customer relationships are strong, as evidenced by our high retention rate, around 96 percent.(同样的情况也发生在我们的合作伙伴身上:我们的业务关系和客户关系都很稳固,我们高达约 96% 的……率就证明了这一点。)”,结合前文说的是公司的业务和客户关系,此处的“retention rate” 应该是与客户相关的比率,从“around 96 percent”以及整体语境来看,说的是能够留住客户的比率,也就是客户留存率,所以“retention”在这里指的是选项C“Action of keeping customers(留住客户的行为)”。故选C。 【31题详解】 推理判断题。文章最后一段首先提到“Naturesave is certainly on to something.( Naturesave无疑找到了正确的方向。)” D。 D Boston wants to be smarter. The city has taken advantage of technologies to become more responsive to its residents' needs. But technology alone is not sufficient to make today's cities liveable. Boston has discovered that it also needs to reach the old-fashioned low-tech community and integrate that technology with city life. Kris Carter rolled out Boston's smart city program in 2014. It started with an App that residents could download to report locations where sidewalks needed repair. The city sorted out those reports and ranked them in a database, which repair crews used to prioritize their work. The system worked beautifully, except for one problem: most of the alerts(警报) came from wealthier neighborhoods, where the concentration of smartphone - equipped residents was highest. "The complaints from the App didn't always correlate with the greatest community need for repairs, " explains Carter. Carter's group has moved away from the model common to many smart city initiatives of letting tech-savvy(精通技术的)residents drive the process. Instead, they run meetings to find out what problems people in different neighborhoods care about solving. When it came to sidewalks, Boston introduced a second method of collecting repair tips, hiring people to get out and walk the city's 1,700 miles of sidewalks to take notes on their condition. Whether using low-tech or high-tech approaches, says Carter, to stay smart, a city needs to continually reassess its options to spot opportunities to improve residents' lives. Take the sidewalk repair program, walking on the streets was proved a useful, if inefficient way to prioritize repair needs. But last year the group found that walkers' mobile phones could be tracked as they moved along the streets, and that data could be analyzed to identify sidewalk routes which are most often used by neighborhoods. “Combined with our other sidewalk information, that gave us an even better way to predict where faster repairs would do the most good," says Carter,"We're really always looking for whatever mix of approaches best solves the problem." 32. What is the first paragraph mainly about? A. The citizens' life. B. The city's reputation. C. The city's management. D. The benefits of technology. 33. What problem did Kris Carter's team meet when carrying out their program? A. They faced many technical obstacles. B. They couldn't serve all residents well. C. They were not supported by residents. D. They were annoyed by being short-staffed. 34. Which of the following might Kris Carter most agree with? A. Maximizing the benefits of technology. B. Mixing approaches for solving problems. C. Giving full play to the power of residents. D. Letting tech companies be a leading role. 35. What can be a suitable title for the text? A. A Smart City: More Than Just Tech B. A City with Intelligent Facilities C. Joint-effort in City Construction D. The Modernization of a City 【答案】32. C 33. B 34. B 35. A 【解析】 【分析】本文是一篇说明文,文章介绍了波士顿在利用高科技管理城的同时使用传统办法以实现城市有效管理,成就现代智慧城市。 【32题详解】 推理判断题。根据文章第一段“But technology alone is not sufficient to make today's cities livable. Boston has discovered that it also needs to reach the old-fashioned low-tech community and integrate that technology with city life.”但是,仅仅依靠技术还不足以使今天的城市适合居住。波士顿发现,它还需要接触到传统的低智能化社区,并将这种技术与城市生活结合起来。本段主要讲述了波士顿力争成为智慧城市,使用高科技更充分地回应市民的需求,同时,城市也注重加强传统低智能化社区科技与生活的融合。所以第一段主要是关于城市的管理。故选C。 【33题详解】 推理判断题。由第三段最后一句“The complaints from the App didn’t always correlate with the greatest community need for repairs, explains Garter.”嘉德解释说,来自应用程序的投诉并不总是与最大的社区维修需求相关。根据第四段“Carter's group has moved away from the model common to many smart city initiatives of letting tech-savvy(精通技术的)residents drive the process. Instead, they run meetings to find out what problems people in different neighborhoods care about solving”可知,卡特的团队已经摆脱了许多智能城市倡议的共同模式,即让精通技术的居民来推动这一进程。相反,他们召开会议,找出不同社区的人关心解决的问题。克里斯卡特的团队在执行他们的计划时遇到的问题是不能为所有市民很好地服务,故选B。 【34题详解】 推理判断题。由最后一段最后一句“We're really always looking for whatever ever mix of approaches best solves the problem.”我们一直在寻找各种方法的最佳组合来解决问题可知,Carter想要寻找高科技技术与传统方法融合的方式来满足城市管理的需要,故选B。 【35题详解】 主旨大意类。文章主要介绍了波士顿在提高城市智能程度的过程中,既充分利用高科技,又充分使用传统方法,以满足所有市民的需要,它是一座不仅仅以高科技来成就的智慧城市,所以短文的最佳标题为“ 智能城市:不仅仅靠技术”。故选A。 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Do you want to improve your savings in 2024? If so, the 52-week money challenge is a simple and effective way to stay on track. ___36___ And all you need is $1 to start. What is the 52-week money challenge? Using the 52-week money challenge you should deposit (存入) an increasing amount of money into your savings each week for one year. ___37___ In other words, you’ll save $1 the first week, $2 the second week, $3 the third week, and so on until you put away $52 in week 52. Those numbers are guidelines, but you can get creative with the amount you save each week if you’d like to save more over the year or you don’t have enough extra cash available for the regular challenge. ___38___ A simple piggy bank may work for you, but not everyone has cash on hand to deposit each week. Plus, having your savings in such an accessible place may tempt you to dip into it before the end of the challenge. ___39___ Then transfer (转移) your challenge money into it each week, which can prevent impulse (冲动) spending and help you accumulate a bit more over the course of the year through interest earnings. (然后每周把你的挑战资金转入其中,这可以防止冲动消费,并帮助你在一年内通过利息收入积累更多资金)”可知,上文提到把积蓄放在容易拿到的地方可能会让人忍不住花掉,下文则提出了一个解决方案,即把钱转入另一个账户,本空应点明开一个账户这一存储方法。B选项“Consider opening a high-yield savings account instead. Amelia was known throughout Seaford for her adventurous nature. From the moment she could walk, she would eagerly run towards the crashing waves, feeling the sand between her toes and the cool spray of the ocean mist on her face. She was a woman with a strong will and possessed a heart full of kindness. Amelia’s love for the ocean was intense, and she spent most of her days exploring the beautiful beaches and sparkling waters that surrounded her house. One sunny morning, while Amelia was walking along the shore, she noticed a group of restless seagulls abnormally circling above the crashing waves. Their unusual calls echoed (回) through the air. Concerned for their well-being, she followed their flight pattern, her instincts guiding her toward danger. As she approached a towering cliff, Amelia gasped in horror. On a narrow ledge (岩架), high above the violent waves, was a young dolphin trapped in a thick fishing net. Its shiny body shone under the golden rays of the sun, but its freedom was cruelly limited by the trap. With each struggle, the net tightened around its delicate body, leaving painful marks on its skin. Its tail flapped helplessly, each movement a request for help, while its desperate cries for assistance echoed through the air. A sense of urgency filled her, pushing her forward with determination and resolve. Realizing that time was tight, Amelia knew she had to act instantly to free this innocent creature from its difficult position before it submitted to exhaustion or the force of the tides. 注意: 1. 续写词数应为150左右; 2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 Paragraph 1: Without hesitation, Amelia rushed back to the village. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2: As the dolphin was released into the waters, it hesitated for a moment. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】范文 Without hesitation, Amelia rushed back to the village. She gathered the villagers to join her in the rescue. Amelia led the way, carefully moving along the steep cliff edge until she reached the dolphin. As she drew closer, she noticed tears streaming out of the creature’s eyes, as if it knew its fate was in their hands. Amelia carefully freed the dolphin from the net. Then Amelia and the villagers guided it down to the waiting boat. Then they made their way back to the shore and treated the injuries of the dolphin. As the dolphin was gently released into the calm, welcoming waters, it hesitated for a moment. Amelia approached the dolphin and gently stroked it. The dolphin touched the girl with the tip of its nose in response and made happy sounds as if to say a final thank you before diving gracefully beneath the surface. The crowd erupted in applause, their hearts filled with joy and gratitude for being witness to such a remarkable rescue. Amelia’s courage and compassion were an inspiration to all who heard her story. 接近靠近:drew closer/approached near ②.治疗:treated/cured ③.爆发:erupted /burst out 情绪类 ①.喜悦:joy/delight/pleasure ②.充满感激:be filled with gratitude/be full of gratitude/be fully grateful 【点睛】[高分句型1]. B Yang Li, a native Miao woman passionate about embroidery, owns a folk culture products shop that sells Miao embroidery, batik cloth, and silver jewelry. C By its very nature, insurance is designed to protect customers against future risk. The decision to give away so much has helped to shape the business Criddle explains. D Boston wants to be smarter. D They were annoyed by being short-staffed. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$
