(24-25高一上·湖南邵阳·期末)It’s school time again! You’re probably feeling excited and maybe a little sad that summer is over. Some kids feel nervous or a little scared(害怕)on the first day of school because of all the new things: new teachers, new friends, and evena new school. Luckily, these “new” worries only stick around for a little while. Let’s find out more about going to a new school.
Most teachers kick off the new school year by introducing themselves and talking about all the stuff you’ ll be doing that year. Some teachers give students a chance to tell something about themselves to the rest of the class, too. When teachers do the talking on the first day, they often go over classroom rules and school rules so you’ll know what’s allowed and what’s not. Please pay close attention.
You might already know a lot of people in your classes on the first day, but it’s a great day to make a new friend, so try to say hello to kids you know and new ones that you don’t. Make the first move and you’ll be glad you did, and so will your new friend!
Seeing friends you haven’t seen for some time can make the first day a good one. You can make the day special by wearing clothes that you really like. Maybe you got a great T-shirt on one of your vacations, or a pair of sneakers(运动鞋). It also can make you feel good to be prepared and have all the things you need, such as pencils, folders, and whatever else you’ll need. But make sure that you pack them the night before in case you don’t have time in the morning.
1.The underlined phrase “kick off” in the second paragraph probably means “________”.
A.start B.study
C.find D.teach
2.The last paragraph mainly tells us about ________.
A.what to know about a new school
B.how to prepare for a new school
C.what to do on your first day of school
D.how to spend your first day of school
3.According to the passage you usually do everything on the first day of school except ________.
A.introduce yourself
B.learn about the school rules
C.make new friends
D.go over your new lessons
4.If you happen to see an old friend on the first day of school, from the passage we know that you will feel ________.
A.nervous B.lucky
C.happy D.worried
【答案】1.A 2.B 3.D 4.C
根据第二段“Most teachers … the new school year by introducing themselves and talking about all the stuff you’ll be doing that year. (大多数老师通过自我介绍和谈论你们今年要做的所有事情来_____新学期。)”可知,此处是讲述新学期开始时老师们的做法,可推理出kick off表示“开始”含义,start表示“开始”含义,符合题意。故选A项。
根据最后一段“Seeing friends you haven’t seen for some time can make the first day a good one. (见到一段时间没见的朋友可以让开学第一天变得愉快)”可知见到一段时间没见的朋友可以让开学第一天变得愉快,再根据后文“You can make the day special by wearing clothes that you really like. (你可以穿你喜欢的衣服让这一天变得特别。也许你在度假时买了一件很棒的T恤,或者一双运动鞋。准备好所有你需要的东西也会让你感觉很好,比如铅笔、文件夹和其他你需要的东西。但是一定要在前一天晚上打包好,以防你早上没有时间)”可知此处讲的是为了让开学第一天这一天变得特别而做的准备,故选B项。
3.细节理解题。根据第二段“Most teachers kick off the new school year by introducing themselves and talking about all the stuff you’ll be doing that year. Some teachers give students a chance to tell something about themselves to the rest of the class, too. When teachers do the talking on the first day, they often go over classroom rules and school rules so you’ll know what’s allowed and what’s not. (大多数老师通过自我介绍和谈论你们今年要做的所有事情来开始新学期。一些老师也会给学生一个机会向班上的其他同学介绍自己。当老师们在开学第一天讲话时,他们通常会复习课堂规则和校规,这样你就会知道什么可以做,什么不可以做)”可知,开学第一天,你可以介绍自己,了解学校规则,并未提到复习新课。故选D项。
4.细节理解题。根据最后一段第一句“Seeing friends you haven’t seen for some time can make the first day a good one. (见到一段时间没见的朋友可以让开学第一天变得愉快)”可知,如果你在开学第一天遇到老朋友,你会很高兴。故选C项。
B
(2024高三上·山东济宁·期中)Two hundred years ago, American students went to American schools. Like you, they studied math, spelling and geography. Unlike you, they also studied Greek (希腊语) and Latin (拉丁语). In fact, students spent more than half their time studying Greek and Latin.
The same was true for most students in Europe. Until the seventh century, all educated Europeans knew Latin. It did not matter if they lived in England, Italy, France or Spain. If they were educated, they knew Latin.
During the seventh century, educated Europeans began to study Greek as well as Latin. Greek and Latin had been the leading languages of the ancient Greeks and Romans. All educated Europeans were expected to know these languages.
To educated Europeans, the languages of the Greeks and the Romans were important. The ideas of the Greeks and Romans were also important. People knew that many of their own ideas had come from the Greeks and the Romans. To understand their own culture, they must understand its origin (起源). They knew that those beginnings lay in the classical (古典文学的) world.
Today we have so many things to study that few people have time to learn Greek and Latin. Few of you will study either language in school. Yet the ideas of the Greeks and the Romans are still important to us. These ideas still help to shape western culture today. To understand our own culture, we must understand the culture of the classical world.
5.Two hundred years ago, in American schools _____.
A.there were many educated Greeks B.Greek and Latin were very popular
C.students paid little attention to math D.students knew little about geography
6.According to the text, Europeans thought _____.
A.the origin of their culture was unknown
B.the ideas of the Greeks were unacceptable
C.Greek was much more important than Latin
D.the Romans had a great influence on their culture
7.Where does the author of the text probably come from?
A.Japan. B.Greece. C.America. D.China.
8.In the last paragraph, the author suggests that _____.
A.it’s of great value to learn Greek and Latin
B.it’s quite difficult to learn Greek and Latin
C.the culture of the classical world is useless nowadays
D.Western culture is quite different from Greek and Roman cultures
【答案】5.B 6.D 7.C 8.A
根据第4段“many of their own ideas had come from the Greeks and the Romans. To understand their own culture, they must understand its origin”可知,当时欧洲人认为要了解自己的文化,他们必须了解文化的起源,而当时的思想、文化来源于希腊人和罗马人。
根据第五段“These ideas still help to shape western culture today”作者认为这些思想仍然影响着今天的西方文化。
根据第五段“To understand our own culture, we must understand the culture of the classical world”可知,作者认为希腊人和罗马人的思想影响着今天的西方文化。 故选A 项。

(2024·广东肇庆·一模)Do you think studying in a different country is something that sounds very exciting? Certainly, it is a new experience, which brings the opportunity of discovering fascinating things and a feeling of freedom. 9 You will experience culture shock. Evidently, at least four essential stages of culture-shock adjustment occur.
The first stage is called "the honeymoon". In this stage, you feel excitement about living in a different place, and everything seems to be marvelous. 10
Eventually, however, the second stage of culture shock appears. This is the "hostility stage". 11 You become tired of many things about the new culture. Moreover, people don't treat you like a guest anymore. Everything that seemed to be so wonderful at first is now awful, and everything makes you feel distressed and tired.
Then you come to the third stage called "recovery". You start feeling more positive, and you try to develop comprehension of everything you don't understand. The whole situation starts to become more favorable. 12
The last stage of culture shock is called "adjustment". 13 The things that initially made you feel uncomfortable or strange are now things that you understand. Now you feel comfortable; you have adjusted to the new culture.
A.Actually, culture shock is something you cannot avoid when studying in a foreign country.
B.You have reached a point where you feel good because you have learned enough to understand the new culture.
C.You like everything, and everybody seems to be so nice to you.
D.You recover from the symptoms of the first two stages.
E.In spite of these advantages, however, there are also some challenges you will encounter.
F.However, when you have completely adjusted to a new culture you can more fully enjoy it.
G.You begin to notice that not everything is as good as you had originally thought it was.

Two Languages Better Than One to Keep Mind Young
Two languages are better than one when it comes to keeping the brain young, Canadian researchers reported on Monday.
Older adults who grew up bilingual had quicker minds when 29 (test) than people who spoke only one language, the researchers found. They showed 30 (little) of the natural decline associated with aging.
The tests of people who grew up speaking English and either Tamil or French suggested that having to juggle two languages keeps the brain elastic and 31 help prevent some of the mental slowing caused by age. Ellen Bialystok of York University and colleagues said they tested 104 monolingual and bilingual middle-aged adults aged 30 to 59 and 50 older adults. They used a test called the Simon Task, 32 (measure) reaction time for cognitive tasks, such as recognising on which part of a computer screen a coloured square appears.
Both younger and older bilinguals were faster on the test, Bialystok reported. “We compared groups of people who, 33 we could tell, are exactly the same,” Bialystok said in interview. “They have all had the same amount of education. They all scored exactly the same on cognitive tests, memory tests and English vocabulary tests. ”
The difference was 34 half the people grew up with either French or Tamil spoken at home and English outside. They all spoke both languages every day from childhood. People who were proficient in a second language acquired in school 35 (not include) in the study to keep the effects clear.
“It’s not a facility. It’s not a talent,” Bialystok said. Rather it was a case of 36 (force) from a young age to function in two languages. Bialystok said her earlier study 37 children suggested these circumstances force a change in the way 38 the brain processes information. “Language is always good — more language is always better,” she said.

空后的help为动词原形,空处应用情态动词,结合“help prevent some of the mental slowing caused by age”可知,此处表示对当前情况的推测,应用情态动词may“可能,也许”。故填may。
结合空后的“we could tell”可推知,此处用固定表达as far as we could tell表示“据我们所知”,用于表达对某个情况的评估或判断。故填as far as。
故填that。
故填were not included。
故填being forced。
故填with。
故填that。

Dear Chris,
Glad to know that you’re interested in the reading-sharing event held last Friday with the theme of “Reading A Book Together”, I can’t wait to share more details.
To spark our interest in reading original English books, we chose the attractive novel Pride and Prejudice. After two weeks of reading, we all engaged in discussion, where some shared their favorite characters and plots, while others conducted in-depth explorations of the significance and its relevance to us. What impressed me most was not only my growing fluency in reading native English works but also how my classmates offered unique perspectives on interpreting the story, making it a thought-provoking experience.
I know you’ve read the book too. What do you think of it? Looking forward to hearing your thoughts!
Yours,
Zhang Qiang
