Many people will ask themselves that question for the first time this year. Prices are falling, battery range is rising and mainstream brands are adding new EVs at a breakneck pace. Here are three things anybody seriously considering buying an EV should know: 1. The price to install (安装) a 240v charger Anybody who owns an electric vehicle needs a 240-volt charger at home. With one, you can recharge overnight, so you start every day with the equal amount of a full tank. Just a few years ago, home 240v EV chargers cost $2,500-$3,000, including installation, but prices have declined as competition grows with the number of EVs on the road. 2. The time it takes to charge About 80% of miles driven in EVs are powered by electricity charged at home, but you’ll need to charge elsewhere occasionally. That’s when charging time becomes a big deal, but how long it takes depends on a couple of factors. First, voltage (电压) from the charger. Getting 250 miles of range in seven hours from a 240v charger is fine when you re charging overnight at home, but it’s a problem if you’re going 300 miles for a weekend trip. In that case, you’ll want to look for a 400v fast charger. They’re not as common as 240v public chargers yet, but they’re becoming more widespread. There’s another factor: the on-board charger. It regulates how fast the battery can accept electricity. A vehicle with a higher-capacity on-board charger accepts electricity faster. 3. Where to charge Good route-planning apps will help you find chargers on a road trip easily. “Most people have no idea how many public charging stations are within, say, a 10-or 15-mile radius (半径) because they’re small, people don’t look for them or even don’t know what to look for, and they’re rarely signposted,” said journalist John Voelcker, who has studied EVs and charging exhaustively. 4. On the horizon If an EV doesn’t meet your needs now, watch this space. They’re coming closer. but large numbers of gasoline vehicles will remain in production for years. Beyond that, companies will keep making spare parts for oil-burners for decades. 36. What is the primary benefit of having a 240-volt charger at home for EV owners? A. It allows for faster travel. B. It enables overnight recharging. C. It reduces the cost of electricity. D. It increases the battery capacity. 37. What is a significant factor affecting how long it takes to charge an EV? A. The speed of the vehicle. B. The weight of the vehicle. C. The type of battery used. D. The voltage from the charger. 38. According to the article, how do most people feel about public charging stations? A. They find them easy to locate. B. They are well aware of their locations. C. They often underestimate their availability. D. They prefer to use home chargers completely. 39. What does the article suggest about the future of gasoline vehicles? A. They will be completely disappear in a few years. B. They will continue to be produced for years. C. They will become more expensive than EVs. D. They will have better technology than EVs. 40. This passage is mainly intended to . A. offer advice on purchasing an electric vehicle. B. illustrate the factors charging time depends on. C. look forward to the future of electric vehicles. D. explain the reason for the falling prices of electric vehicles. B After some blood tests, Dr. Stubs stood before me, a tall man, but short on personality and sporting a cold expression. “You have systemic lupus.” he said matter-of-factly. “Lupus,” he continued, “is an auto-immune disease and...” I remember certain details but mostly I remember him talking about children. “Children are no harm. But childbirth would jumpstart additional symptoms that could be life threatening. You already have two kids anyway.” As I got up to leave, shaken and drained, he said his parting words, “I would discourage any further research. There is no cure and nothing can prevent its progression.” Still, I did research lupus and its symptoms — tiredness and joint pain — were both consistent with what I was experiencing. And eventually some major organs could be affected, causing shutdown and possibly death. I studied and found out that echinacea (紫锥菊) had a record in making immune system stronger. I decided that along with the plant I would strengthen my mindset by immersing myself in my family with my one-year-old son and three-year-old daughter. After another visit I decided never to go back to Dr. Stubs. How could one endure repeatedly hearing desperate words coming from an emotionless mouth even though they were truth? The years passed. When I would feel tired and achy I pulled support from my children and their laughter. Finally, after eight years, I went to Dr. Kirstein who was recommended by a friend. She stood there holding my hand and looking into my eyes warmly. “So, let’s talk a little.” Instantly my defenses were down. Before I knew it, she had me running on and on about my children, my husband, my life and dreams. I told her about all the meaningful activities I was involved in, those things I might have never done without the disease. After several follow-up tests, and greater research into my family history, Dr. Kirstein came to conclusive answer. I did not have systemic lupus. There must be something wrong with the initial tests eight years before. I didn’t know whether I should jump for joy or scream because I had been living the last eight years in fear of a fatal disease. But then I realized that I had been living every day not so much in fear, but happiness Everyday was a gift and I knew it. 41. What did Dr. Stubs tell the author about lupus? A It can be cured easily. B. Further research is necessary. C. Childbirth would make it worse. D. It only affects minor organs. 42. What did the author do after leaving Dr. Stubs? A. She gave up all hope. B. She did some research on lupus. C. She stopped seeing any doctors. D. She started taking a lot of medicine. 43. Why did the author decide not to go back to Dr. Stubs? A. Because he was not professional. B. Because his words were too inspiring. C. Because he didn’t offer any treatment. D. Because his attitude was cold and unfriendly. 44. What can we infer about the author from the passage? A. She is a strong and positive person. B. She is irresponsible for her health. C. She is easily influenced by others. D. She is too stubborn to listen to advice. 45. What can be the best title for the passage? A. The Role of Family in Health Recovery. B. Reclaiming Life: A Misdiagnosis Journey. C. Embracing Life with an Incurable Illness. D. The Emotional Stress of Medical Labels. C Some people have said aging is more a slide into forgetfulness than a journey towards wisdom. However, a growing body of research suggests that late-in-life learning is possible in reality education does an aging brain good. Throughout life, people’s brains constantly restore themselves, In the late 1960s, British brain scientist Geoffrey Raisman studied growth in damaged brain regions of rats through an electron microscope; their brains were making new connections. This meant brains may change every time a person learns something new. Of course, that doesn’t mean the brain isn’t affected by the effects of time. Just as height usually declines over the years, so does brain volume: Humans lose about 4 percent every decade starting in their 40s. But that reduction doesn’t necessarily make people think slower; as long as we are alive and functioning, we can change our brains with new information and experiences. In fact, scientists now suspect accumulating novel experiences, facts, and skills can keep people’s minds more flexible. New pathways can strengthen our ever-changing mental structure, even as the brain shrinks. Conventional ways like word puzzles and brain-training apps can contribute to mental durability. Even something as simple as taking a different route to the grocery store or going somewhere new on vacation can keep the brain healthy. A desire for new life challenges can further boost brainpower. Research about aging adults who take on new enterprises shows improved function and memory as well as a reduced risk of mental disease. Openness —a, characteristic defined by curiosity and a desire for knowledge — may also help folks pass brain tests. Some folks are born with this take-in-the-world attitude, but those who aren’t as genetically gifted aren’t necessarily out of luck. While genes can encourage an interest in doing new things a 2012 study in the journal Psychology and Aging found completing reasoning tasks like puzzles and number games can enhance that desire for novel experiences, which can, in turn, refresh the brain. That’s why brain scientist Richard Kennedy says “It’s not that old dogs can’t learn new tricks. It’s that maybe old dogs don’t realize why they should.” 46. What do some people think of aging adults? A. Their wisdom grows as time goes by. B. Their memory is gradually getting worse. C. They can benefit from late-in-life learning. D. They are likely to have mental health issues. 47. What can we conclude from Geoffrey Raisman’s finding? A. Brain damage seriously prevents one’s learning. B. Brain power weakens slower than we imagine. C. Brains may refresh and improve with learning. D. Brains make connections under good physical conditions. 48. What is one thing that helps maintain the health of our brain even as it shrinks? A. Doing daily routines by conventional means. B. Avoiding worrying about our mental strength. C. Imitating old dogs’ way of learning new tricks. D. Approaching everyday tasks in novel ways. 49. What does the author say can contribute to the improvement of brain function? A. Being curious and desiring knowledge. B. Being eager to pass brain tests at an old age. C. Rising to life’s challenges and avoiding risks. D. Boosting immunity to serious mental diseases 50. What is the finding of the 2012 study in the journal Psychology and Aging? A. Wishing to solve puzzles enhances one’s reasoning power. B. Playing number games unexpectedly stimulates one’s memory. C. Desiring new experiences can help to refresh the brain. D. Learning new tricks should not be confined to old dogs only. D Lao Zi once said, “Care about what other people think and you will always be their prisoner.” People-pleasing, or seeking self-worth, through others’ approval, is unproductive and an exhausting way to go through life. Why do we allow what others think of us to have so much power over how we feel about ourselves? If it’s true that you can’t please all people all of the time, wouldn’t it make sense to stop trying? Unfortunately, sense often isn’t driving our behavior. For social beings who desire love and belonging wanting to be liked, and caring about the effect we have on others, is healthy and allows us to make connections. However, where we get into trouble is when our self-worth is dependent upon whether we win someone’s approval or not. This need to be liked can be traced back to when we were children and were completely dependent on others to take care of us: Small children are not just learning how to walk and communicate, they are also trying to learn how the world works. We learn about who we are and what is expected of us based on interactions with others, so, to a four-year-old, if Mommy or Daddy doesn’t like him or her, there is the danger that they will abandon them. We need to understand that when we desperately want someone to approve of us, it’s being driven by that little kid part of us that is still terrified of abandonment. As you become more capable of providing yourself with the approval you seek, your need for external validation (认同) will start to disappear, leaving you stronger, more confident, and yes, happier in your life. Imaging how much time we lose every time we restrict our true selves in an effort to be liked. If we base our worth on the opinions of others, we cheat ourselves of the power to shape our experiences and embrace life not only for others but also for ourselves because ultimately, there is no difference. So embrace the cliche (老话) and love yourself as it’s highly doubtful that you’ll regret it. 51. What can we conclude from Lao Zi’s quotation? A. We should see through others’ attempt to make a prisoner of us B. We can never be truly free if taking to heart others’ opinion of us. C. We can never really please others even if we try as hard as we can. D. We should care about others’ view as much as they care about our own. 52. What will happen if we base our self-worth on other people’s approval? A. Our desire to be loved will be fulfilled. B. Our life will be unfruitful and exhausting. C. Our identity as social beings will be affected. D. Our sense of self will be sharpened and enhanced. 53. What may account for our need to be liked or approved of? A. Our desperate longing for interactions with others. B. Our understanding of the workings of the world. C. Our knowledge about the pain of abandonment. D. Our early childhood fear of being deserted. 54 What can we do when we become better able to provide ourselves with the desired approval? A. Enjoy a happier life. B. Exercise self-restriction. C. Receive more external validation. D. Strengthen our power of imagination. 55. What does the author advise us to do in the last paragraph? A. Embrace life for ourselves and for others. B. Base our worth on others’ opinions. C. See our experiences as resources. D. Love ourselves as we are. In 1916, two girls of wealthy families, best friends from Auburn, N.Y. — Dorothy Woodruff and Rosamond Underwood — traveled to a settlement in the Rocky Mountains to teach in a one-room schoolhouse. The girls had gone to Smith College. They wore expensive clothes. So for them to move to Elkhead, Colo. to instruct the children whose shoes were held together with string was a surprise. Their stay in Elkhead is the subject of Nothing Daunted: The Unexpected Education of Two Society Girls in the West by Dorothy Wickenden, who is a magazine editor and Dorothy Woodruff’s granddaughter. Why did they go then? Well, they wanted to do something useful. Soon, however, they realized what they had undertaken. They moved in with a local family, the Harrisons, and, like them, had little privacy, rare baths, and a blanket of snow on their quilt when they woke up in the morning. Some mornings, Rosamond and Dorothy would arrive at the schoolhouse to find the children weeping from the cold. In spring, the snow was replaced by mud over ice. In Wickenden’s book, she expanded on the history of the West and also on feminism, which of course influenced the girls’ decision to go to Elkhead. A hair-raising section concerns the building of the railroads, which entailed (牵涉) drilling through the huge Rockies, often in blinding snowstorms. The book ends with Rosamond and Dorothy’s return to Auburn. Wickenden is a very good storyteller. The sweep of the land and the stoicism (坚忍) of the people move her to some beautiful writing. Here is a picture of Dorothy Woodruff, on her horse, looking down from a hill top: “When the sun slipped behind the mountains, it shed a rosy glow all around them. Then a full moon rose. The snow was marked only by small animals: foxes, coyotes, mice, and varying hares, which turned white in the winter.” 56. Why did Dorothy and Rosamond go to the Rocky Mountains?
