Clara wondered what was wrong and went closer. Her mom had a turtle (乌龟) in her hand! “I think I broke its leg.” she said to Clara, “I’m really sorry. Will you help me take care of it until it gets well?” Clara felt bad for the little turtle. Turtles move slowly, so it probably could not run away when it saw the lawn mower coming. And Clara’s mom could not see the turtle in the long grass! It was a mistake, but Clara and her mom would make up for it. Clara named the turtle Phillip. She and her mom took Phillip to the vet (兽医) . The vet took an X-ray of Phillip’s leg, which showed that it was broken. The turtle got a bandage (包扎) for his broken leg. The vet told Clara that Phillip needed plants to eat, water to drink and a place to live in. Clara took the turtle home and took good care of him. She brought him fruit and leaves to eat and kept his water bowl clean. Phillip seemed to feel better. After eight weeks, Clara and her mom took Phillip back to the vet, who said that his leg was healed. Passage C How would you feel if someone decided to take away your park? Well, that’s what’s happening in my community. There’s a park that some people want to turn into a golf course Let me tell you why I think it’s a bad idea. First a park is meant to be for the whole community. Not everyone likes golf, so not everyone will get to use the course. This isn’t fair. A community park should have open spaces for everyone to use. Second, to make way for the golf course, lots of playground equipment (设施) will have to be moved or broken down, which is a waste of time and money. Third, not all kids are crazy about golf. At the moment, the park has a skating place and a playground. These attract lots of kids from the community. If you turn the park into a golf course, this means these kids will stay at home and turn on a video game rather than get some exercise. It also means that they might be out on the street causing trouble. Wouldn’t it be better to give them something to do at the park? Finally, golf is expensive. Building a golf course and maintaining (维护) it will cost a lot of money. Who is going to pay to maintain the golf course? What about those people who can’t afford to join a golf club? That means that the golf course will only be available to people with lots of money. Turning our park into a golf course is a bad idea. I suggest we have a community meeting before plans go any further. 9. Some people want to change the park into ________. A. a golf club B. a golf course C. a zoo D. a skating place 10. According to Paragraph 4, having nowhere to go will make some children ________. A. go to get some exercise B. fall in love with golf C. play video games at home D. go to the street and make friends 11. Which of the following shows the structure of the passage? (P= Paragraph) A. B. C. D. 12. What is the writer’s purpose in writing this passage? A. To help carry out further plans. B. To make the park more beautiful. C. To encourage children to go skating. D. To stop the golf course from being built. Passage D An invasive species (入侵物种) of ant, called “bigheaded ant” is changing the way lions hunt and eat in Kenya, according to a new study. The ants spread because of human activities like trade and travel. They arrived in Kenya from southern Africa about 15 years ago. Since then they have been killing the local acacia ants. Acacia ants live in and take care of the whistling thorn trees in Kenya. In a “symbiotic relationship”, acacia ants get food from the trees and use them for home. In return, they protect the trees from animals like elephants or giraffes which might eat too much of the trees. Acacia ants do this through attacking these animals in group. However, bigheaded ants eat acacia ants and their eggs. As a result, the number of acacia ants is falling. What’s more, bigheaded ants don’t protect whistling thorn trees either. So with fewer acacia ants to save them, the trees are in trouble. Professor Palmer’s team found that in areas with bigheaded ants, elephants destroyed more trees. This means the place is more open and zebras can easily find lions following them. So lions kill much fewer zebras in these areas than in tree-filled places. The good news is that the lion population remains unchanged because the lions turn to hunt buffalo for food instead of zebras. This probably means that the tiny ants have caused lions to change their habits too. They have to hunt the bigger, heavier buffalo. Professor Palmer said, “We often find it’s the little things that rule the world.” 13. Picture ________ best shows the underlined words “symbiotic relationship”. A. B. C. D. 14. In Paragraph 4, elephants destroyed more trees so that ________. A. buffalo ran out of food B. lions had trouble hunting zebras C. invasive ants lost homes D. zebras left tree-filled places 15. Bigheaded ants have caused the number of ________ to fall. ①acacia ants ②whistling thorn trees ③zebras ④lions A. ①② B. ①④ C. ②③ D. ②④ 16. Lions ________ to deal with the changes. A. have kept the elephants from treefilled places B. have spent much more time following zebras C. have moved somewhere without bigheaded ants D. have looked for other larger animals for food International Day of Happiness Be happy! There’s a park that some people want to turn into a golf course Let me tell you why I think it’s a bad idea. First, a park is meant to be for the whole community. B. C. D. 12. What is the writer’s purpose in writing this passage? A. To help carry out further plans. B. To make the park more beautiful. C. To encourage children to go skating. D. A. have kept the elephants from treefilled places B. have spent much more time following zebras C. have moved somewhere without bigheaded ants D. have looked for other larger animals for food 【答案】13. B 14. B 15. A 16. 根据“acacia ants get food from the trees and use them for home. In return, they protect the trees from animals like elephants or giraffes which might eat too much of the trees.” 根据“This means the place is more open and zebras can easily find lions following them. So lions kill much fewer zebras in these areas than in tree-filled places.” 根据“However, bigheaded ants eat acacia ants and their eggs. As a result, the number of acacia ants is falling. What’s more, bigheaded ants don’t protect whistling thorn trees either. So with fewer acacia ants to save them, the trees are in trouble.” 故选A。 根据“This probably means that the tiny ants have caused lions to change their habits too. They have to hunt the bigger, heavier buffalo.” International Day of Happiness Be happy!
