Here are some of the common differences that you will find between these three kinds of English. Pronunciation among the three types of English can be different. In American English, the “r” at the end of a word almost always affects its pronunciation, while in Australian and British English, the “r” is often silent. Australian English is unique due to the fact that many words have sounds that are gone. Instead of saying “good day”, Australian speakers say “g’ day”. The main pronunciation difference between the three, however, is the pronunciation of the vowel (元音) sounds. Not only do the three types of English sound different, but they are also spelled differently. In some ways, the spelling shows the difference in pronunciation. For example, Americans use the word airplane. In Great Britain, the word is aeroplane, and it is pronounced with an “o” sound. Another example is the word aluminium, which is the UK spelling, and aluminum is the US spelling. Can you find the difference? In this example, the Australian spelling is the same as the UK spelling. Another common spelling difference between British English and American English is the use of - our or -or at the end of a word. For example, in the UK, colour, flavour, honour are words that all end with -our. In America, they are spelled with -or endings. In Australia, the -our spelling is almost universal. Also, the endings -re and -er are different between different English dialects. In America, you will go to the theater or fitness center, while in Britain you will visit the theatre or fitness centre. Again, Australian English follows the British way. 28. What’s the author’s purpose in writing this text? A. To show that English has developed differently in different countries B. To tell the differences between American, British and Australian English C. To encourage us to explore the differences of English used in different countries D. To suggest we speak different English when we are chatting with people from different countries 29. The main pronunciation difference between American English and British English lies in______. A. the sound of “r” at the end of words B. the words with sounds that are gone C. the vowel sounds of some words D. the last sound of many words 30. Which of the following words belongs to the Australian spelling? A. Airplane B. Flavor. C. Theater D. Aluminium 31. After reading the text, we can learn that______. A. Australian English has become the most popular English now B. Australian English is more difficult to learn than American English C. Australian English is more difficult to follow than American English D. Australian English follows the British way more than the American way 【答案】28. B 29. C 30. D 31. (在美国,它们以-or拼写结尾。在澳大利亚,-our拼写几乎是普遍的。)”可知,澳大利亚英语更追随英式英语而不是美式英语。故选D。 D Keep your goldfish in a tank which contains plants could make them clever, according to new American research. Scientists at Penn State University, in Pennsylvania, discovered that fish benefit from being in “enriched environment”. They believed that their discovery could provide a view on how to make fish successfully repopulate(使重新入住)oceans and rivers. Professor Victoria Braithwaite explained that a lot of fish don’t survive once they are freed into the wild. She said that now fisheries(鱼场)solve this problem by breeding(繁殖)huge numbers of fish in the hope that some will survive. The professor believes that part of the reason why so many fish die is that they are bred in “pretty boring” tanks where there is always plenty of food and they are totally unprepared for free. To test this imagination, Braithwaite bred 30 fish in two separate tanks. One contained plants and rocks which were regularly changed to ensure that the fish would not become bored, while the other was empty. When the researchers placed the fish in a maze(迷宫), the fish raised in the enriched tank made fewer mistakes when trying to escape from the maze. The performance of the fish from the enriched tank continued to improve with each experiment, and they learned to solve the maze puzzles much faster than the fish raised in the standard tank, according to the researchers. They found increased expressions of a gene in a region of the fish’ s brain that is connected with learning and memory, a sign of increased brain function and growth. Braithwaite had concluded that interacting with the environment can influence gene expressions in the brain. “If you want to make the environment more interesting for your fish, change things around a bit,” she said. 32. What did the scientists discover according to paragraph 1? A. Fish are more likely to die if there are different kinds in a tank. B. Goldfish can be more easily fit in with a new environment. C. Fewer and fewer fish can repopulate oceans and rivers. D. Enriched environment is good for fish to live in. 33. Why can many fish die after they are freed into the wild? A. They may be attacked by other fish, B The water might have been polluted. C. They used to live in uninteresting tanks. D. There are not enough plants in the water in the wild. 34. How were the fish raised in the enriched tank in the experiment? A. They ate much less food. B. They made more mistakes. C. They tended to become less energetic. D. They solved the maze puzzles much faster. 35. Which is probably Braithwaite’s point of view? A. Fish’s brains have something to do with what they often eat. B. Fish can learn and memorize things better in a boring environment, C. Interacting with other fish has no effect on gene expressions in the brain of fish. D. Interacting with the environment has an effect on gene expressions in the brain of fish. 【答案】32. D 33. C 34. D 35. D 【解析】 【导语】这是一篇说明文。美国一项最新的研究发现,把金鱼养在有植物的水箱里可以让它们更聪明。 【32题详解】 细节理解题。根据第一段中的“Scientists at Penn State University, in Pennsylvania, discovered that fish benefit from being in “enriched environment”. I’m glad that you support me when I decide to do anything. You always try to help, and that’s important to me. Dad, I remember when you first took me fishing. I loved going even though I never caught anything. I also remember when you would get angry with me. I realise you were only trying to show me the right way. When I cried, you would always be there to try to cheer me up. That’s what I call a good, loving, caring dad. C The English spoken in Australia, Great Britain and America has a surprising number of differences. To suggest we speak different English when we are chatting with people from different countries 29. The main pronunciation difference between American English and British English lies in______. A. the sound of “r” at the end of words B. the words with sounds that are gone C the vowel sounds of some words D. the last sound of many words 30. Australian English follows the British way more than the American way D Keep your goldfish in a tank which contains plants could make them clever, according to new American research. A. They may be attacked by other fish, B. The water might have been polluted. B. Fish can learn and memorize things better in a boring environment C. Interacting with other fish has no effect on gene expressions in the brain of fish. D. Interacting with the environment has an effect on gene expressions in the brain of fish. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 How to Pick High School Classes Many high school students want to know what courses to take to improve their chances for admission to highly competitive colleges.____36____ Here is some advice to help you when you make these decisions. ____37____ Students should take challenging classes.
