The End Family, from Whitefish Bay, Wisconsin, is like many other large families. The kids play together, argue, and compete with each other. But they are different in a few amazing ways.
To start, there are 7 children, including 4 boys and 3 girls! And they have some very unique skills! After watching YouTube stars like Dude Perfect, the family started doing trick shots in their free time and posting videos to YouTube. As their skills grew, they attempted harder and harder tricks. A few years later, their experiment has turned into over 4 million subscribers to their YouTube channel and over 1 billion views! Who are they and how did they do this?
It all started when Tommy, one of the older boys, began a YouTube channel to share videos about his drawings and video games with family members. Then in 2016, water bottle flipping (翻转) became a trick that many were doing on YouTube. The Ends enjoyed it and put a lot of effort into practicing their flipping until they became really good at it. Then, all of a sudden, their YouTube channel caught fire and took on a life of its own.
To master these tricks, they watched videos by Dude Perfect, and he was bottle-flipping, and they thought they could do it, too. So they spent hours and hours practicing, and they put their video up. It got a million views, and they were like, that was crazy!
According to Tommy stated, he just looked up YouTube tutorials (教程) and figured it out on his own. When they started out, their video cameras were really cheap, and they got better ones when they went viral. But he had never taken classes or anything on how to edit.
4. What makes the family different from the others?
A. It is especially large. B. Its children are all boys.
C. The members can do something special. D. The members get on very well with each other.
5 Why did the Ends take up water bottle flipping?
A. They want to go viral. B. They were absorbed by it.
C. It helped them make a living. D. It was enjoyed by many people.
6. What is the best word to describe Tommy?
A. Fortunate. B. Intelligent. C. Ambitious. D. Humorous.
7. What lesson can we learn from the family?
A. There is no success without hardship. B. Everyone can make his dream come true.
C. Every great dream starts from a small one. D. Hard work and passion can help you succeed.

Orangutan (红毛猩猩) calls have a complex structure that was thought to be unique to human language. Short sequences are nested inside longer sequences, much like the way we make long sentences from shorter phrases.
Adriano Lameira at the University of Warwick in Coventry, UK, and his colleagues studied wild Bornean orangutans in Indonesian Borneo. They recorded long calls. “They are advertisement calls,” says Lameira. “They take the form of ‘ooo ooo ooo’.”
Lameira wanted to understand the rhythm (节奏) of the calls. But this proved knotty. “We were having difficulties,” he says, because the tempo varied dramatically during each long call: Fast bursts of short “ooo” sounds were mixed with longer, slower “ooo” sounds, he says.
Closer analysis revealed that the middle of each long call had a regular tempo of long “ooo” sounds, but the beginning and end had bursts of shorter “ooo” sounds. Crucially, the shorter sequences were nested inside longer sequences. This is similar to a feature of human language called recursion (递归) . We can create complex sentences by nesting an extra phrase in the middle of a sentence, as with: “The dog, which ran after the cat, was barking”. The orangutans’ long calls had a similar recursive structure.
Previously researchers have failed to find evidence of recursion in the calls of apes, monkeys or other animals. The closest anyone has come is training animals to recognise recursion — but this isn’t the same as observing wild animals actually making recursive calls. Recursion seemed unique to humans.
Lameira says previous searches for recursive calls were unsuccessful because they asked too much of their animal subjects. Humans use recursion to create new and complex meanings, and researchers had looked for animals that do the same. But they seem not to. His team’s analysis didn’t look at the meaning of the calls at all. “It was a pure structural analysis,” he says.
Lameira emphasizes that there is no evidence the orangutans are encoding complex meanings in their long calls. It may be that the recursive complexity is simply a form of showing off that is similar to birdsong, which can be incredibly complicated.
8. What does the underlined word “knotty” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. Funny. B. Worthy. C. Crazy. D. Tricky.
9. How did the author explain the recursive structure?
A. By giving examples. B. By analyzing samples.
C. By conducting analysis. D. By telling stories.
10. Why did the previous searches for recursive calls fail?
A. The researchers didn’t make enough analyses.
B. The researchers chose the wrong animal subjects.
C. The researchers neglected the calls of the animals.
D. The researchers didn’t find a proper animal subject.
11. What is the best title of the passage?
A. The Secret of Orangutan’s Language B. Researchers Devote to Protect Orangutan
C. Orangutan Can Communicate Like Human D. Orangutan Calls Have a Recursive Structure
D
Many of us love sweet, carbonated drinks — even though we know they’re not good for our teeth or our bodies. But a large new study has found that they could be bad for our minds, too. Researchers from South Korea have found that drinking more sugar-filled, carbonated drinks is linked to an increased risk of depression.
The team looked at data from more than 87, 000 people in South Korea, with an average age of about 40. Participants were asked about their consumption of sugar-sweetened carbonated drinks over a week. They were then put into groups based on their consumption, from people who almost never drank them — less than one 200ml serving per week—to those who drank five or more servings per week. The researchers compared this with people’s scores on a questionnaire designed to check for symptoms (症状) of depression.
The study found that depressive symptoms increased proportionally (成比例地) with consumption of sweet, carbonated drinks. “Even the group that consumed sugar-sweetened carbonated drinks at least once a week had a higher look through of depressive symptoms than the group that did not drink at all.” said Ju Young Jung, one of the authors.
The results were not affected when taking obesity (肥胖) into account, the researchers said. They said they were a little surprised to see such clear results — South Koreans don’t usually have sugary drinks as often as people in places like Europe and the US. However, they said South Koreans and others in Asia are increasingly replacing water with sugary drinks — and the study found that about one third of participants consumed these drinks more than once a week.
Jung said the team wasn’t sure exactly why sugary drinks are linked to depression, although their results are similar to those from some recent, smaller studies. The study did not consider zero-calorie drinks, but Jung said more research would be needed to look at the effect of zero-calorie drinks.
12. What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?
A. The limits of the study. B. The finding of the study..
C. The purpose of the study. D. The process of the study.
13. What made the researchers surprised?
A. The participants are so crazy about sugary drinks.
B. Sugary drinks are getting popular in South Korea.
C. Sugary carbonated drinks can increase the risk of depression.
D. People in South Korea have no interest in sugary drinks.
14. What can we conclude from the last paragraph?
A. Why sugary drinks cause depression is clear. B. The team had carried out similar studies before.
C. All kinds of drinks were included in the study. D. More studies about drinks will be carried out.
15. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A. To offer advice on health. B. To introduce a science study.
C. To reveal a science phenomenon. D. To advertise a new product.

Ten years ago, I was a primary school student and we started to learn to swim in the new semester. One day, we packed together on a school bus and headed for the downtown to go swimming. There were fifty 10-year-old boys in the mid-winter cold. Though we had just learned to swim for a few months, we all wanted to prove ourselves and eagerly anticipated the arrival at our destination. The atmosphere on the bus was charged with excitement, an energy that could hardly be contained.
Soon, we arrived at the swimming pool, and out of the bus, we ran through the cold, keeping up with each other’s speed, into the sounds and wet warmth of the building. We could smell the pool and hear it echo to us as we entered the building. How excited we were!
Before jumping into the water the coach, Mr. Black took us through a 10-minute warm-up. Then he warned us that one could surface three times before they would lose consciousness (意识), reminding us to shout for help if something was wrong. However, I had no plan to do that, for I was quite confident with my swimming skills and often boasted (吹嘘) about them in front of my classmates. If I did that, what a shame it would be for someone like me.
I still remember that feeling of excitement, as if it were yesterday. It had been five weeks since Mr. Black had announced the pool swim session, and all we could do then was run and jump into the water. And run we did. We actually flew into the water, eager to test our swimming skills. But as I hit the deep end, I felt the weight of the water pull me down. I knew I was drowning (溺水). Oh, how scared I was!

A Fortunate. B. Intelligent. C. Ambitious. D. Humorous.
7. What lesson can we learn from the family?
A. There is no success without hardship. B. Everyone can make his dream come true.
C. Every great dream starts from a small one. D. Hard work and passion can help you succeed.
C 5. B 6. B 7. D

根据文章第一段中“But they are different in a few amazing ways.( 但它们在一些惊人的方面是不同的。)”以及第二段中“To start, there are 7 children, including 4 boys and 3 girls! And they have some very unique skills!( 首先,有7个孩子,包括4个男孩和3个女孩!他们有一些非常独特的技能!)”可知,这个家庭与其他家庭不同的是,他们有一些非常独特的技能,即能做特别的事情。故选C。
【5题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第三段中“The Ends enjoyed it and put a lot of effort into practicing their flipping until they became really good at it. Then, all of a sudden, their YouTube channel caught fire and took on a life of its own.( Ends夫妇很喜欢这个过程,并且花了很多精力练习他们的翻转,直到他们真的很擅长。然后,突然之间,他们的YouTube频道火了起来,开始了自己的生活。)”可知,The End Family之所以开始练习水瓶翻转,是因为他们被这个技巧所吸引,并投入了大量精力进行练习,直到变得非常擅长。故选B。
【6题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章最后一段第一句“According to Tommy stated, he just looked up YouTube tutorials (教程) and figured it out on his own.
D“Hard work and passion can help you succeed.(努力和热情可以帮助你成功)”符合题意。故选D。

Previously, researchers have failed to find evidence of recursion in the calls of apes, monkeys or other animals.
D 9. A 10. C 11. D

根据第三段中划线词上文“Lameira wanted to understand the rhythm (节奏) of the calls(Lameira想要了解这些叫声的节奏)”以及下文 ““We were having difficulties,” he says, because the tempo varied dramatically during each long call: Fast bursts of short “ooo” sounds were mixed with longer, slower “ooo” sounds, he says.(‘我们遇到了困难,’他说,因为每次长呼叫的节奏变化很大:快速爆发的短‘ooo’声音与长而慢的‘ooo’声音混合在一起。)”
根据第四段中“We can create complex sentences by nesting an extra phrase in the middle of a sentence, as with: “The dog, which ran after the cat, was barking”. The orangutans’ long calls had a similar recursive structure.( 我们可以通过在句子中间嵌套一个额外的短语来创建复杂的句子,比如:‘狗在追猫,狗在叫’。猩猩的长叫声也有类似的递归结构。)”可知,此处以举例的方式来说明递归结构,然后指出红毛猩猩的长叫唤也有类似的递归结构。由此可知,作者是通过举例子来解释递归结构。故选A。
根据第六段中“Lameira says previous searches for recursive calls were unsuccessful because they asked too much of their animal subjects. Humans use recursion to create new and complex meanings, and researchers had looked for animals that do the same. But they seem not to. His team’s analysis didn’t look at the meaning of the calls at all. “It was a pure structural analysis,” he says.(Lameira说,之前对递归呼叫的研究都没有成功,因为他们对动物实验对象要求太多。
通读全文,结合第一段“Orangutan (红毛猩猩) calls have a complex structure that was thought to be unique to human language. Short sequences are nested inside longer sequences, much like the way we make long sentences from shorter phrases.( 红毛猩猩的叫声具有复杂的结构,这种结构曾被认为是人类语言所独有的。短序列嵌套在长序列中,就像我们用短语组成长句的方式一样。)”以及第四段“Closer analysis revealed that the middle of each long call had a regular tempo of long “ooo” sounds, but the beginning and end had bursts of shorter “ooo” sounds. Crucially, the shorter sequences were nested inside longer sequences. This is similar to a feature of human language called recursion (递归).( 更细致的分析发现,每个长叫声的中间部分都有规律的长‘ooo’声的节奏,但开头和结尾都有一连串较短的‘ooo’声。关键的是,短序列嵌套在长序列中。这与人类语言中的一个特征相似,称为递归。)”可知,文章主要介绍了红毛猩猩的叫声具有递归结构。由此可知,D选项“Orangutan Calls Have a Recursive Structure(红毛猩猩的叫声具有递归结构)”最符合文章标题。故选D。

The study found that depressive symptoms increased proportionally (成比例地) with consumption of sweet carbonated drinks.
C To reveal a science phenomenon. D. To advertise a new product.
D 13. C 14. D 15. B

In life, you get used to falling, making mistakes, being on the receiving end of blows and disappointments, and making the wrong decisions. Furthermore, you get used to having to deal with depression, anger, sadness, and despair. Negative emotions and pain are necessary. After all, you wouldn’t be strong if you didn’t have to defend yourself in order to survive and keep going. ___16___
In fact, when something beautiful comes into your life, you feel rather at a loss and even depersonalized. ___17___ You observe your own life from the outside, without participating in your own happiness. You fear that it’s not for real, or that you’ve created expectations that aren’t going to be met. So, you fall into the trap of not taking risks. You believe that good things only come after a great deal of effort and that nothing in life is free. You’ve become distrustful of happiness.
___18___ You think it involves so much more effort to be happy. So, you go out into the street wearing a suit of armor (盔甲) of pessimism to safeguard yourself from anything unexpected. ___19___ Because when you’re happy, you can touch your life with your own hands, but this makes you feel too fragile.
Nevertheless, you caress (抚摸) the dreams that used to shine on your horizon, keep those unforgettable magical moments in your pocket, and seat yourself in mental clouds that comfort your well-being. You don’t want to go back to the glorious unknown. What unsettles you the most is the fear that it’d be the last time. ___20___ There’s always light outside and it always shines through. That’s the beauty of life.
A. Surprisingly, this has its own logic.
B. However, what about positive emotions?
C. It’s as if it weren’t really happening to you.
D. So how can we deal with these negative feelings?
E. As a result, you separate yourself from the outside world.
F. However, there’s one thing for certain — the sun rises again every morning.
G. It’s contradictory that you’re more used to falling than to maintaining your balance.
B 17. C 18. G 19. A 20. F
根据前文“Furthermore, you get used to having to deal with depression, anger, sadness, and despair. Negative emotions and pain are necessary. After all, you wouldn’t be strong if you didn’t have to defend yourself in order to survive and keep going. (此外,你习惯于处理抑郁、愤怒、悲伤和绝望。负面情绪和痛苦是必要的。毕竟,如果你不为了生存而保护自己,你就不会强大。)”可知,此处介绍了我们生活中的负面情绪,并且习惯了处理抑郁、愤怒、悲伤和绝望等负面情绪和痛苦。这些描述都是关于负面情绪的。B选项“However, what about positive emotions?( 然而,积极情绪呢?)”
根据上文“In fact, when something beautiful comes into your life, you feel rather at a loss and even depersonalized. (事实上,当美好的事物进入你的生活时,你会感到不知所措,甚至失去个性。)”可知,此处提到当美好的事物进入你的生活时,你会感到不知所措,甚至感到非人格化。C选项“It’s as if it weren’t really happening to you.(就好像这并没有真的发生在你身上一样。)”
根据下文“You think it involves so much more effort to be happy. So, you go out into the street wearing a suit of armor(盔甲) of pessimism to safeguard yourself from anything unexpected.(你认为快乐需要付出更多的努力。所以,你穿着一套悲观的盔甲走到街上,保护自己免受任何意外的伤害。)”可知,此处强调穿着一套悲观的盔甲走到街上,保护自己免受任何意外的伤害。G选项“It’s contradictory that you’re more used to falling than to maintaining your balance.(你更习惯于跌倒而不是保持平衡,这是矛盾的。)”
根据上文“ So, you go out into the street wearing a suit of armor(盔甲) of pessimism to safeguard yourself from anything unexpected. (所以,你穿着一套悲观的盔甲走到街上,保护自己免受任何意外的伤害。)”可知,此处提到你穿着悲观的盔甲走在街上,以防备任何意外。A选项“Surprisingly, this has its own logic.(令人惊讶的是,这有它自己的逻辑。)” 同时根据下文“ Because when you’re happy, you can touch your life with your own hands, but this makes you feel too fragile.( 因为当你快乐的时候,你可以用自己的手触摸你的生活,但这让你觉得太脆弱了。)” 故选A。
根据前文“You don’t want to go back to the glorious unknown. What unsettles you the most is the fear that it’d be the last time. (你不想回到辉煌的未知世界。最让你不安的是害怕这是最后一次。)”可知,此处提到你抚摸那些曾经闪耀在你地平线上的梦想,把那些难忘的神奇时刻放在口袋里,坐在安慰你幸福的精神云端上。你不想回到那个光荣的未知世界。最让你不安的是,这可能是最后一次。F选项“However, there’s one thing for certain—the sun rises again every morning.( 然而,有一件事是肯定的——太阳每天早上都会升起。)” 这与下文的“There’s always light outside and it always shines through. That’s the beauty of life.(外面总是有光,总是照进来。这就是生活的美丽。)”相呼应。故选F。

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Before jumping into the water, the coach, Mr.

On the third rise, I finally committed to shouting for help.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
I surfaced for the first time. It was bright and noisy. But I didn’t shout for help. Something inside me stopped me. I sank again and resurfaced. And then, once more, I couldn’t make a sound, though I thought it wise to shout for “HELP”. It didn’t take long for me to realize that my life was passing too quickly. I knew that on the third time underwater, I would see my life pass before my eyes, feeling so terrified. My short life, only 10 years old, flashed before my eyes in an instant.
On the third rise, I finally committed to shouting for help. However, it was too late. My mouth was full of water and I couldn’t utter only one word. Luckily, my coach noticed me. He swam over and lifted me out of the water. I never had a chance to meet my fate and finally asked for help. Ten years later, I still remember that moment vividly, as it marked a turning point in my life. It taught me an important lesson that our life is more valuable than anything else.
