18. What does Lily want Tamika to do?
A. Teach her to swim. B. Work harder. C. Be her best friend.
19. Who would give the book two stars?
A. The speaker herself. B. The speaker’s son. C. The speaker’s daughter.
20. What does the speaker mainly talk about?
A. How to read a book. B. How to develop an interest. C. How to make friends.
【答案】18. C 19. A 20. C
【解析】
【原文】W: My Best Friend is a book for young children. It’s mainly about a little girl named Lily. It’s summer, and Lily spends lots of time at the community pool, where she sees Tamika. Lily decides that Tamika will be her new best friend. But Tamika already has a best friend and no matter how hard Lily tries, she can’t seem to impress Tamika. The story tells about the difficulties of finding a friend.
My daughter Lisa and I read the book together. She said that she would give the book three stars. But I would give it just two stars. I especially did not like the topic. I think as a parent we should explain to our children that when someone is being mean and ignoring you, pushing harder will not make them like you more. We should also tell them that it’s OK to walk away from someone who is not showing true interest in being your friend. I wouldn’t recommend the book. But through writing the book, Mary Ann Rodman did open the doors for me to teach Lisa that some people are mean and that it’s OK to walk away from them and make new friends.
第二部分:阅读理解(共两节,满分40分)
第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)

What Is Your Pet Trying to Tell You
Animals want our attention, and sometimes they’re quite obviously about asking for it. Unusual behaviors are often our pets’ way of telling us to stop what we’re doing and play with them. It’s why Fido constantly chases his tail and why Kitty keeps rolling around. A desperately bored pet may have “bad” behaviors to get a reaction-even a negative one!
Feed me.
Sure, your dog loves you, but that’s not why he’s licking(舔)your face. A puppy learns to lick his mother’s mouth to get a little leftover food, so Spot isn’t kissing you in our sense of the word; he just wants a snack.
I’m stressed.
Cat owners also misinterpret their furry friends’ kisses. While a cat might lick you to show love, sometimes she’ll do it to ease herself. One way to tell if her licking is stress-related is to see if it goes on for an extended period of time. Birds also overclean when they feel anxious. Some will even drag out their own feathers.
My tail tells all.
Dogs wag(摇)their tails to the right when they see something or someone they want to approach, and to the left when they see something they want to avoid. When frightened, dogs curl their tails in, while cats wrap theirs around themselves. And if a cat’s tail looks like a question mark, she’s eager to play.
21. What does a dog show if it kisses its owner?
A. Hunger. B. Love. C. Fear. D. Sadness.
22. How many kinds of pets are mentioned in the text?
A. Two. B. Three. C. Four. D. Five.
23. What will happen if birds get anxious?
A. They will drag others’ feathers.
B. They will approach someone they like.
C. They will clean their feathers more than necessary.
D. They will stare at their owners for a longer time.

I'm from a fishing family. My grandfather was a fisherman, working out of Fano, the Italian town where I grew up and still live. I work from 7 p.m. until 11 a. m. with fishermen on the north Adriatic Sea. There are only six or so of us on board. At night, the fish are most active and we can avoid other ships.
The nets reach the sea bed for the catch but sometimes they also catch turtles that often die in the nets or on board. The net is designed to allow turtles to escapes it has a hole at the top they can swim out of. We call it “TED”. The TED aims at reducing the bycatch (误捕) of turtles. Turtles and some larger fish can leave through the TED, but the current (水流) holds most of the catch in the net.
I ensure that the net is working, and that the fishermen we're cooperating with can still catch enough for their livelihoods while protecting turtles. The work is part of research by the Cetacea Foundation, in cooperation with University of Pisa, where I'm a field researcher. It is financed by the LIFE programmer. I love this work. It means I'm not stuck in an office all day and instead can enjoy the ocean and work closely with people who live by the sea.
When my grandfather was fishing in the 1970s, there were more fish and more turtles around. At the foundation, we save 50-60 turtles a year, most of which are harmed because of fishing. If we can protect turtles by popularizing this device to fishermen all across the Adriatic, I'd see this work as a success.
24. Why does the author work at night?
A. He is busy in the day.
B. He can catch more fish at night.
C. Fish are very active in the day.
D. There are more ships at night.
25. What can we know about TED?
A. It doesn't reach the sea bed.
B. It is helpful to catch larger fish.
C. It is helpful to protect sea turtles.
D. It catches large turtles.

A. An excellent fisherman in Italy.
B. A volunteer of Cetacea Foundation.
C. A founder of LIFE programmer.
D. A researcher of University of Pisa.
27. Why does the author like his job?
A. He can stay in the office.
B. He can work with fishermen.
C. He can go abroad for sightseeing.
D. He can get his father's help.

Shortly after I graduated from college, I moved to a new state to start a full-time job. One day at work, I found myself wanting to go traveling. Once I’d saved up enough money, I decided it was the perfect opportunity to travel by myself for the first time in my life. So I quickly started doing research on where I’d like to go.
I had never traveled alone before, so I decided to sign up for a guided group that was going to Thailand. This gave me a sense of security (安全). It felt like a great way not only to try being alone and meeting strangers but also doing something that sounded really fun for two weeks.
The Thailand trip forced me out of so many comfort zones (舒适区) that ended up being one of the big turning points of my life. The time I spent in Thailand finding my way around airports and taxis alone, meeting a group of strangers, and doing rock climbing with them in often remote parts of the country, ended up being one of the greatest experiences of my life. Up until this point I had always been shy and very careful to avoid danger and mistakes, but this travel experience inspired me to become different. It showed me a brave, strong, and independent side of myself that went on to influence my life greatly when I returned home.
When I got back, I pretty much dedicated my life to spending as much time as possible doing activities like climbing, hiking, or backpacking especially things that I once thought I wasn’t “capable of” or was “too scared of Today, about 6 years later, I’m an outdoor empowerment coach and backpacking educator.

The key to a happy life has nothing to do with getting ahead at work, making money, or traveling the world. Instead, living your best life and creating meaning is all about one thing: relationships.
A study of adult development has been running at Harvard since 1938, and is now on its second generation of participants—the children of the original study’s subjects. Over decades, the research team collected data about their lives, including their physical and mental health, marital (婚姻的) status and quality, career happiness, etc.
They found the most important aspect in how happy and healthy these men were over time was their relationships. In other words: Finding happiness in life is all about the people you love.
The research doesn’t only include romantic relationships and marriage. Quality, close relationships are important whether they are in the situation of romantic relationships or closeness between friends or family members. The kind of relationship you have is less important than how close you feel with them.
However, the study only included men, and important gender differences exist in how people experience relationships. Some research suggests that men may benefit more from marriage. But they tend to have a harder time keeping friendships; as men get older, they will more likely say they have nobody to discuss important subjects with. So it’s possible that having close relationships throughout their lives might affect men differently than women.
The findings line up with the effects of loneliness. People who are socially isolated have a greater likelihood of strokes (中风), heart attacks, and higher blood pressure, not to mention mental health issues.
Unfortunately for the youngest generations, recent surveys found that young Americans are lonelier than older generations. That will likely have a big impact on how healthy and happy people feel throughout their lives.
32. What’s the moral lesson from this passage?
A. Travel far and wide to learn a lot. B. Keep an open mind to be creative.
C. Treasure your time with your loved ones. D. Work hard to be the best of your profession.
33. What’s the implication of Paragraph 5?
A. Women are unwilling to participate in the study.
B. Men are better at maintaining a close relationship.
C. Women are not treated equally in scientific research.
D. The findings of the study may not be true for women.
34. Why is the youngest generation unfortunate?
A. Because they have nobody to talk to. B. Because they are more socially isolated.
C. Because they can’t keep their relationships. D. Because they suffer physically and mentally.
35. What is the best title for the text?
A. Close Relationships Make a Happy Life
B. Men Look Forward to Close Relationships
C. Close Relationships Ensure People’s Health
D. Men and Women Differ in Keeping Relationships
【答案】32. C 33. D 34. B 35. A

Have you ever stopped to think about the common phrases we use in everyday conversation? People say things like “knock on wood” and “spill the beans” all the time, along with another common idiom “break a leg”. ____36____ Read on to get the fascinating details.

____37____ It’s typically said to actors before they go on stage for a performance particularly on opening night. It’s not limited to performers, though. ____38____

B

My trip to Thailand was just what I needed to make that change. It showed me what was possible. It changed the path of my life.
