So that's what we did,for hours and hours, since he turned out to be very talkative. When the train eventually pulled in,we didn't swap numbers—it was a conversation strictly of its time—but I still think about it occasionally on long, boring journeys, before getting a phone out and scrolling silently like everyone else.Rarely can a person cheerfully break the social taboo (禁忌) about talking to strangers without any trace of ill intention but life would be more interesting if more of us knew how to do it. And that's why I feel it ridiculous about a campaign launched this week to heal bitter national divides by encouraging Britons to talk to each other.Obviously,it takes more than a small talk over garden fences to unite a divided nation now.More people live alone than they did a generation ago,and we socialise increasingly through screens instead of bothering to call.In reality, social media platforms designed to bring people together have unknowingly fueled the division. It is true that the“tube chat”campaign of a few years back failed in its attempt to make Londoners talk to each other on public transport. But even city residents who would normally die rather than make eye contact with strangers still happily join the large crowds of people by the Thames for the New Year's Eve fireworks. They would get a far better view at home on TV—it's not really about the fireworks, but being part of social engagement. There's no guarantee that this latest attempt to reconnect will succeed, but I hope that my temporary train friend then is still talking, wherever he is now. 21.What has made talking to strangers a social taboo among the Britons? A.A lack of basic communicating skills. B.The absence of common topics. C.The concern for personal safety. D.The addiction to social media. 22.How does technology affect people's mutual connection? A.It is bringing people together in a larger sense. B.It is positively helping break the national boundaries. C.It has made people more divided than connected. D.It is the key driving force of removing divisions. 根据第三段中的“In reality, social media platforms designed to bring people together have unknowingly fueled the division.” 23.What does the highly-attended firework show indicate? A.Tube chat campaign can never make it. B.TV programs at home are not appealing. C.The charm of the fireworks is hard to resist. D.People's desire to connect is still alive. 根据第四段中的“They would get a far better view at home on TV—it's not really about the fireworks, but being part of social engagement.” B Super Typhoon Rai (known as “Odette”in the Philippines) made landfall on Siargao Island in southeastern Philippines at 1:30 pm local time on Thursday,December 16.The typhoon was the 15th storm to hit the country in 2021 and was the strongest storm of 2021.Almost 16 million Filipinos were facing threats including strong winds, heavy rains, flooding, landslides, displacement and risking loss of life, home, livelihood and agriculture.Around 700,000 of them were children. UNICEF (United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund) expressed deep concern for children and families at risk and announced its commitment to providing support to the Philippine government.Reyn Ambag was one of the children who were rescued during the typhoon. 12-year-old Reyn Ambag is a grade 7 student living on the island of Siargao. He goes to school in San Isidro National High School which is located in the Municipality of San Isidro. With Values Education as his favorite subject in school,Reyn is always ready to help others. Reyn is raised by his mother who is a single parent and runs a retail store alone.Aside from his mother, his cousin has also been living with them to help out in the absence of Reyn's father.Reyn's mother provides for all three of them. She is able to support their daily needs and Reyn's schooling by the income she gets from the small retail store. During Typhoon Odette,Reyn's family stayed inside the comfort room of the school where they were evacuated (疏散) to.There,he witnessed through the window how the strong winds of the typhoon destroyed the area. They stayed there until the storm subsided and it was safe for them to go out.Upon returning to their home, they were astonished to find that their house was damaged due to the fallen trees. After observing the delays in restoring the electricity in their community,Reyn wanted to pursue a related job in the future.“I want to be an electrician someday so that if a power cut would happen because of a typhoon,I would be able to help in restoring it for free,”said Reyn. 24.What is the first paragraph mainly about? A.His father. B.His family store. C.His cousin. D.His part-time job. 根据第四段中“She is able to support their daily needs and Reyn's schooling by the income she gets from the small retail store.” 26.What does the underlined word“subsided”in Paragraph 5 probably mean? A.Died down. B.Fell apart. C.Went over. D.Broke down. 根据画线词前“They stayed there until the storm”及画线词后“and it was safe for them to go out”可推知,他们一直待在那里,直到风暴平息。 27.Why did Reyn intend to become an electrician? A.To make money to make his life better. B.To reward the community with his work. C.To meet his mother's expectations of him. D.To restore power in time after typhoons. 根据最后一段中“I want to be an electrician someday so that if a power cut would happen because of a typhoon,I would be able to help in restoring it for free”可知,Reyn想成为电工是为了能够在台风之后及时修好电力设施,恢复供电。 C Earth is lighted up by bioluminescence (生物发光) but,for many of us,seeing the natural phenomenon is a rare treat:Catching the glow of a firefly or witnessing a dolphin swimming through electric blue waters is a thrill. Researchers are currently engineering glowing flowers and decorative plants that can cast a green light onto our living rooms.Observing plant's health via its glow can be a way to instantly measure its health, and the side effect is anybody who wants a healthy glowing plant in their living room can have one. A study published on Monday in Nature Biotechnology shows that this goal is well on its way to being a reality. The study authors announce they've created a method that causes plants to glow much brighter, and for a longer period of time, than previous efforts.Plants adapted by this method should be available for purchase within a few years. The research was conducted through a team work between three scientific institutions and Plant,a biotech start-up in Moscow. When this team examined a poisonous mushroom, they discovered that caffeic acid is responsible for its bioluminescence. In this new study, the team employed that information and inserted enzymes (酶)—which are specific to the mushroom—into the DNA of tobacco plants. In turn, the enzymes were able to interact with the caffeic acid in the tobacco plants, and cause them to glow both in the dark and in the daylight. This method, the scientists claimed, made the plants 10 times brighter than previous efforts and the continuous light production didn't harm the health of the plants.Interestingly, the light decreased as the leaves aged—but it also increased when the leaves were damaged. In turn, the team suggested this method could also help other researchers monitor plant responses to various pressures and changes in the environment. If a plant is short of water or a hungry sheep is harming a plant, bioluminescence could warn of this damage before it's too late. 28.How can people quickly identify a decorative flower's health condition? A.By monitoring its glow. B.By making it greener. C.By testing the chemicals in it. D.By putting it in the living room. 根据第二段中“Observing plant's health via its glow can be a way to instantly measure its health, and the side effect is anybody who wants a healthy glowing plant in their living room can have one.” A。 29.What can we expect of the adapted glowing plants? A.They may take the place of lamps. B.They will appear on the market. C.They can light up a whole living room. D.They glow less bright than previous efforts. 根据第三段中“Plants adapted by this method should be available for purchase within a few years.” B。 30.What did the team do with the mushroom in the new study? A.They inserted caffeic acid into it. B.They made it give out brighter light. C.They grew it on the tobacco plants farm. D.They put its enzymes into the tobacco plants. 根据第四段中“In this new study, the team employed that information and inserted enzymes(酶)—which are specific to the mushroom—into the DNA of tobacco plants.” D。 31.What is the last paragraph mainly about? A.Warning of potential damage from glowing plants. B.Increasing light when glowing plants receive damage. C.Effects of continuous light production on the glowing plants. D.Benefits of combining specific enzymes with caffeic acid in plants. 根据最后一段中“This method, the scientists claimed, made the plants 10 times brighter than previous efforts and the continuous light production didn't harm the health of the plants.” D (2023 · 新课标Ⅰ卷) On March 7,1907,the English statistician Francis Galton published a paper which illustrated what has come to be known as the “wisdom of crowds”effect. The experiment of estimation he conducted showed that in some cases, the average of a large number of independent estimates could be quite accurate. This effect capitalizes on the fact that when people make errors, those errors aren't always the same. Some people will tend to overestimate, and some to underestimate. When enough of these errors are averaged together, they cancel each other out, resulting in a more accurate estimate. If people are similar and tend to make the same errors, then their errors won't cancel each other out.In more technical terms, the wisdom of crowds requires that people's estimates be independent. If for whatever reasons, people's errors become correlated or dependent, the accuracy of the estimate will go down. But a new study led by Joaquin Navajas offered an interesting twist (转折) on this classic phenomenon. The key finding of the study was that when crowds were further divided into smaller groups that were allowed to have a discussion, the averages from these groups were more accurate than those from an equal number of independent individuals. For instance, the average obtained from the estimates of four discussion groups of five was significantly more accurate than the average obtained from 20 independent individuals. In a follow-up study with 100 university students, the researchers tried to get a better sense of what the group members actually did in their discussion.Did they tend to go with those most confident about their estimates? Did they follow those least willing to change their minds? This happened some of the time, but it wasn't the dominant response. Most frequently, the groups reported that they “shared arguments and reasoned together.”Somehow, these arguments and reasoning resulted in a global reduction in error. Although the studies led by Navajas have limitations and many questions remain, the potential implications for group discussion and decision-making are enormous. 32.What is paragraph 2 of the text mainly about? A.The methods of estimation. B.The underlying logic of the effect. C.The causes of people's errors. D.The design of Galton's experiment. 33.Navajas' study found that the average accuracy could increase even if . A.the crowds were relatively small B.there were occasional underestimates C.individuals did not communicate D.estimates were not fully independent 答案:D 解析:推理判断题。根据第二段中的“In more technical terms, the wisdom of crowds requires that people's estimates be independent.”和第三段中的“when crowds were further divided into...independent individuals”可知,Navajas的研究发现,即使团队成员的估计不是完全独立的,平均正确度依旧会提升。故选D项。 34.What did the follow-up study focus on? A.The size of the groups. B.The dominant members. C.The discussion process. D.The individual estimates. 35.What is the author's attitude toward Navajas' studies? A.Unclear. B.Dismissive. C.Doubtful. D.Approving. With gas prices rising and airport security lines snaking longer than ever, why not book your next domestic vacation on a train? Compared to other alternatives,it's comfortable and relaxing. Here is some advice on how to make a trip by rail as pleasant as possible. Plan ahead. Most long-distance trains, especially the sleeping car accommodations, sell out very quickly. 36 But no matter when you travel,it's a good idea to make your reservations at least 90 days in advance. Use a travel agent.Consider turning your travel plan over to a travel agent and letting him double-check all the details, make suggestions, and then handle the actual reservations.A good one can sometimes find you discounted tickets. 37 Then you won't have to walk through several cars on a moving train three times a day for your meals. Bring a blanket. When you're riding on trains, you won't be provided with a blanket for free, even if your trip is an overnight one. 38 In the summer in particular, the air conditioning can make them quite cold. Arrive early. Most trains operate just once a day and some run only three times a week,so missing yours can be a disaster. 39 Note: The times listed on the schedules are departure times, not arrival times. Have fun. 40 Read a book, knit,do a crossword puzzle,or simply watch the world unfold outside the window. To calculate your speed as you do,divide 3,600 (the number of seconds in an hour) by the number of seconds it takes you to travel one mile(the distance between two mileposts). If it takes the train 53 seconds to travel one mile, you're going 67.92 mph. A.Train trips aren't for impatient types. B.You'll have views from both sides of the train. C.The temperature on rail cars is often hard to control. D.That's particularly true during busy summer months. E.You might have to wait longer than 24 hours to catch the next one. F.Chances are the cost will be a lot less than the cost of one bedroom. G.He may also book you in a sleeping car that's right next to the diner. 37.答案:G 解析:根据上下文可知,好的旅行社帮你预订车票,不仅可以找到打折的票,还可以节省从卧铺到餐车的距离,G项中“book you in a sleeping car that's right next to the diner”与上下文对应,故G项“他可能还会给你预订餐厅旁边的卧铺车厢。” 故选A项。 I was out for my usual morning run and found myself in the late summer heat, 41 .If only I had taken a water bottle. After I stopped under a bridge to shelter myself from the sun for a moment of 42 ,I saw two young, 43 men standing next to their sleeping bags. One smiled and gently raised his hand as if he were about to say hello, but he didn't say a word.He wasn't asking for 44 .I smiled and raised my hand, too. Sergio's parents had trained him to use his left hand from an early age.As he grew up,he was used to not using his right hand.He could write with his left one and do some things with special tricks or techniques.Despite this,in the first days of new school,Sergio always felt like hiding his underdeveloped right hand in his sleeve as if nobody would ever find out if he did so. It didn't take long for someone to learn Sergio's secret.Jeff Wilkins, the teacher of Sergio's engineering class, figured out that Sergio was missing part of his hand and decided to do something for the new student.Jeff had been leading a robotics project in the school and expert in 3D printing technology.Besides,he hoped to take advantage of this hands-on chance to help his robotics students learn more about engineering and how building a robotic hand worked. So in his class,Jeff announced with great enthusiasm,“You're supposed to be engineering, coming up with new ideas and solving issues. Now Sergio needs a new hand,so we'll work together to build Sergio a robotic hand.” His words fueled everyone's curiosity and creativity. For the next four weeks,Jeff and his class including Sergio worked on the project. After some precise measurements and researches, the class put forward a design draft.Jeff made a few adjustments and gave them some practical suggestions. With access to online models and a 3D printer, they eventually created a robotic hand, which was intended to look good and work well, like catching something. Then came the final testing day. The life-changing gift for Sergio drew huge attention. [参考范文] Then came the final testing day.The whole class gathered in the science classroom, watching breathlessly as Jeff carefully loaded their self-made robotic hand onto Sergio's right arm.It fitted quite well! So excited was Sergio that his arm trembled slightly.Having put a baseball on the desk,Jeff signed to Sergio to pick it up.Slowly,Sergio extended his right hand and reached for the ball.Successfully he caught hold of it and everyone present broke into cheers! Holding the ball,Sergio couldn't contain his tears.Never in his life did he expect to catch something with his right hand! The life-changing gift for Sergio drew huge attention.Jeff and his students became an instant hit and various media competed to cover the news. When interviewed about the intention of the project,Jeff said,“I intended Sergio's robotic hand to show our support for him.Meanwhile,I hope to foster students' scientific spirit through this hands-on operation.” His students stated that Jeff challenged them to transform abstract concepts into reality, from which they benefited greatly.Soon voluntary donations poured in,which would go to the school's scientific research and help students develop better.
