Before planes, people traveled by boat. And getting goods from one place to another took a long time, especially when ships had to sail around continents. In the early 1600s, European trading companies were looking for faster routes to sail to Asia.
In 1607 and 1608, British explorer Henry Hudson led two filed voyages to find a northeast passage across the Arctic Ocean to Asia. He was searching for a route above the Arctic Circle, and his biggest problem was navigating around icebergs, which blocked his path. After failing twice, Hudson couldn’t get a British company to fund his next voyage. He had to persuade the Dutch East India Company to back his third trip.
Hudson left Amsterdam on April 4, 1609 aboard a ship named the Half Moon. The crew headed southwest across the Atlantic Ocean to America. After several months, he arrived in the New York Harbor and sailed up a body of water that is now named the Hudson River. He thought the river might lead to the Pacific Ocean. But he was wrong, and he was forced to turn back to Europe.
Hudson made one final attempt in 1610, on a new ship named Discovery. He sailed Discovery across the northern Atlantic. He discovered a large body of water that became known as Hudson Bay. Unfortunately, the Hudson Bay did not lead to Asia. Furthermore, Hudson’s luck had run out. Winter weather hit the region and the crew suffered greatly from lack of food and supplies. Discovery had become trapped in thick ice. Hudson’s crew became angry. They wanted to return to Europe, but Hudson wanted to continue searching for a passage to Asia. When spring came, the crew revolted (反叛) and took control of the ship. They put Hudson, his son, and seven others on a small boat somewhere in the Hudson Bay. The crew sailed Discovery back to Europe and those who led the mutiny (反叛) were severely punished. Henry Hudson was never seen again.

Matching body odor (气味)may subconsciously form friendships, a study suggests. Imagine you are at a party, talking to someone you’ve never met. Beneath the smiles and polite small talk, you are subconsciously sizing up whether this person is friend material. You might notice that they have a similar accent, facial features and fashion sense. You’ll even note their body odor, according to a new study. Researchers said that sniffing strangers is yet another way to learn how much somebody resembles ourselves. “We become friends with people who are similar to us in the way they look or their values,” Sobel, the lead researcher, says. “We also become friends with those similar in more surprising ways, such as patterns of brain activity. ”
To confirm if similar smells played a role in starting up friendships, the researchers recruited (招募)a group of strangers and asked them to silently interact with each other. Afterwards, they gave them a questionnaire to learn how positively they thought of their partners. A device called an electronic nose (eNose) can detect chemical similarities between persons. The eNose correctly predicted which pairs of people would get along best 73 percent of the time.
Indeed, there is growing evidence that we are unconsciously sniffing out all sorts of information. Studies have shown, for example, that people can correctly differentiate the body odor of relatives from non-family members and can even guess the emotional states of others, based just on the odor of their sweat.
Brain imaging studies have revealed how our brain processes body odor differently to other smells. Blue cheese, for example, will activate olfactory (嗅觉的) areas in the brain. When you unconsciously smell another person, brain activity turns to the emotional and attentional parts of the brain, suggesting that our brain processes smell from people and objects differently.
Understanding the role of smell in social situations is important because we could solve social disorder with olfaction-based treatments, writes Sobel. For now, although clearing our noses to solve relationship problems remains an interesting idea, potential anosmia (嗅觉缺失) treatments may add chemistry to people’s socia1 lives in the future.
8. What can be learned from the study?
A. People tend to smell those around them consciously.
B. People are drawn to others with similar body odor.
C. People like talking to someone they’ve never met.
D. People rely on their sense of smell to judge others.
9. What may people with similar body odor have in common?
A. Accent. B. Lifestyle. C. Living habits. D. Ways of thinking.
10. What were the participants asked to do during the research?
A. To distinguish between smells.
B. To find a partner for a game.
C. To get along with some strangers.
D. To monitor their mental conditions.
11. What do the researchers expect of the new finding?
A. It will be applied to the medical field.
B. It will play a role in the study of the brain.
C. It will help people make more friends in life.
D. It will make people improve their social lives.
D
If you’ve ever been bitten by a mosquito (蚊子), you know how frustrating their bites can be. The little red swellings appear almost immediately, creating an itch (痒) that only seems to get worse once you start scratching.
When a mosquito bites you, it goes into the skin using a special mouthpart to suck up blood. As the mosquito is feeding on your blood, it puts saliva into your skin. Leslie Vosshall, a scientist at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, explained that a mosquito’s saliva has a quality similar to an anesthetic (麻醉剂), so you don’t feel the bite until after the insect flies away. It also contains a component that makes your blood continue to flow without clotting (凝结).
“Mosquitoes’ saliva has lots of proteins (蛋白质) in it, and some people are allergic to them,” Vosshall said. “Our body recognizes the mosquito protein as foreign, and our immune cells (免疫细胞) spring into action to try to fight it.” It’s not the bite that causes the itch—it’s actually the body’s response to the foreign mosquito protein it is trying to fight. That’s why some people may only have a slight reaction to bites, while others, more sensitive to the foreign protein, react with large areas of swelling that are more painful.
“Don’t scratch” is the advice that most experts and health professionals give. “As hard and sometimes unrealistic as it can sound, scratching makes the skin itch more,” warned Daniel Markowski, technical adviser for the American Mosquito Control Association.
Instead, there are dozens of creams and sprays that promise itch relief. Choosing what’s right for you can often come down to trial and error. Vosshall recommended applying hot water to the bite as soon as possible. “Very hot water — as hot as you can stand it but not so hot that you burn yourself — can relieve the itch,” she said.
While both experts said that many people prefer natural treatments or herbal products, they urged caution. There is no scientific evidence these treatments work, and they can come with their own side effects.
12. What is the function of mosquitoes’ saliva?
A. To change the form of blood.
B. To prevent blood from-flowing.
C. To avoid the feeling of being bitten.
D. To discover possible clotting in time.
13. What can influence people’s reaction to mosquito bites?
A. The amount of protein in mosquitoes’ saliva.
B. The level of sensitivity to the foreign protein.
C. The process of being bitten by mosquitoes.
D. The number of active immune cells.
14. What do experts advise us to do?
A. To drink enough hot water.
B. To keep away from dirty places.
C. To be cautious about herbal products.
D. To compare various creams and sprays.
15. What would be the best title for the text?
A. What makes mosquito bites itch?
B. What problem can scratching cause?
C. Why do some people attract mosquitoes more?
D. How can we avoid being bitten by mosquitoes?

To confirm if similar smells played a role in starting up friendships the researchers recruited (招募)a group of strangers and asked them to silently interact with each other.
C People like talking to someone they’ve never met.

10. What were the participants asked to do during the research?
A. To distinguish between smells.
B. To find a partner for a game.
C. To get along with some strangers.
