I used to believe that only words could catch the essence of the human soul. The literary works contained such distinct stories that they shaped the way we saw the world. Words were what composed the questions we sought to uncover and the answers to those questions themselves. Words were everything.
That belief changed.
In an ordinary math class, my teacher posed a simple question: What's 0.99 rounded to the nearest whole number? Easy. When rounded to the nearest whole number, 0.99 = 1. Somehow, I thought even though 0.99 is only 0.01 away from 1, there's still a 0.01 difference. That means even if two things are only a little different, they are still different, so doesn't that make them completely different?
My teacher answered my question by presenting another equation (等式): 1 = 0.9, which could also be expressed as 1 = 0.99999.... repeating itself without ever ending.
There was something mysterious but fascinating about the equation. The left side was unchangeable, objective: it contained a number that ended. On the right was something endless, number repeating itself limitless times. Yet, somehow, these two opposed things were connected by an equal sign.
Lying in bed, I thought about how much the equation paralleled our existence. The left side of the equation represents that sometimes life itself is so unchangeable and so clear. The concrete, whole number of the day when you were born and the day when you would die. But then there is that gap in between life and death. The right side means a time and space full of limitless possibilities, and endless opportunities into the open future.
So that's what life is. Objective but imaginative. Unchangeable but limitless. Life is an equation with two sides that balances itself out. Sill, we can't ever truly seem to put the perfect words to it. So possibly numbers can express ideas as equally well as words can. For now, let's leave it at that: 1 = 0.99999... and live a life like it.
24. What does the author emphasize about words in paragraph 1?
A. Their wide variety. B. Their literary origins.
C. Their distinct sounds. D. Their expressive power.
25. What made the author find the equation fascinating?
A. The repetition of a number. B. The way two different numbers are equal.
C. The question the teacher raised. D. The difference between the two numbers.
26. Which of the following can replace the underlined word “paralleled” in paragraph 6?
A. Measured. B. Composed. C. Mirrored. D. Influenced.
27. What is a suitable title for the text?
A. The Perfect Equation B. Numbers Build Equations
C. An Attractive Question D. Words Outperform Numbers
C
Should humans kill members of one bird species to help protect another? That's the question scientists and conservationists are struggling with right now in the Pacific Northwest.
In a bid to save northern spotted owls from extinction, the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service(USFWS) has suggested shooting more than 470,000 barred owls over the next 30 years. The proposal— which is still a draft and will remain open for public comment— has drawn criticism from some wildlife conservationists and highlights the difficulties land managers face while trying to maintain the delicate balance of ecosystems.
Spotted owls and barred owls are closely related. But only spotted owls are native to the Pacific Northwest. Barred owls, an alien species, have slowly come to dominate the region over the last century. Their larger size, more generalist nature and faster reproduction rate have prepared them to outcompete spotted owls, whose numbers have dropped by roughly 75 percent over the last 20years, according to the USFWS.
Biologists have long wondered how to keep the barred owl population in check. In 2021, scientists published the results of an experiment that involved killing 2,485 barred owls in five study areas. Over five years, spotted owl survival rates increased by an average of 10 percent at the sites. But to truly recover, spotted owls might need more than five years, because they are slow to reproduce. That's the driving factor behind the agency's recently proposed long- term management plan.
Conservationists have mixed feelings about the plan. While they understand that science may support killing barred owls, they worry about the moral inference of killing off members of one species to save another. Bob Sallinger, executive director of the nonprofit Bird Conservation Oregon, says,“ We don't think it's moral because they are currently doing better in the existing environment.” He describes it as a no- win situation that humans have created for ourselves.
“ Rather than choosing to conserve one bird over the other, this is about conserving two species,” says Kessina Lee, supervisor of the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service office in Oregon.“ Spotted owls are fighting for their existence right now. However, even if the service was able to remove that number of barred owls over the next 30 years, that would represent less than 1 percent of the global population of barred owls.”
28. Why is the USFWS proposing the long- term plan?
A. To do biography research on owls. B. To recover spotted owl's population.
C. To balance the birth rates of two owls. D. To improve spotted owl's reproductive ability.
29. What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. The relationship between two owls. B. The outcomes caused by alien species.
C. The alarming situation of spotted owls. D. The physical advantages of barred owls.
30. What does the underlined “ it” in Paragraph 5 refer to?
A. The agency’s proposal. B. Existing environment.
C. Conservationists' concern. D. The co- existence of two owls.
31. What's Kessina Lee’s attitude to the plan?
A. Unclear. B. Dismissive. C. Favourable. D. Doubtful.
D
The benefits of free time, researchers say, depend upon our beliefs about it. A new Rutgers-led study reveals that contentment depends, at least in part, on believing that leisure activities are anything but a waste of time.
According to the study, viewing leisure as wasteful prevents us from enjoying our leisure pursuits— especially purely pleasure activities such as hanging out with friends, watching TV and just relaxing. More goal- driven leisure activities, like exercise and meditation(冥想) tend to feel productive and so are still enjoyed whether or not people see value in their leisure.
In one part of the study, the researchers asked 302 people to recall what they did for Halloween, how much they enjoyed the holiday and their attitudes toward leisure in general. Those who believed leisure was wasteful enjoyed their Halloween less, especially when they engaged in activities like going to a party compared to other activities that might be fun but might also fulfill responsibilities, like trick or treating with their kids.
In another part of the study, participants read news articles meant to convince the reader that leisure is wasteful, unproductive or productive. Next they watched the “Best Funny Cat Videos 2019” and were asked how much they enjoyed it. Those who believed that leisure was wasteful or unproductive didn’t enjoy watching the videos as much as those who thought leisure time was productive and important.
The results show that those who do not enjoy pleasure- driven activities are more depressed, anxious and stressed. The findings suggest happiness may be driven not only by whether people engage in leisure, but whether they find value in what they are doing.
“ Attitudes can be not easy to change. Therefore it may not be possible to shift beliefs about leisure overnight.” said lead author Gabriela Tonietto.“ For the people who refer to leisure as wasteful, it helps to focus on the productive ways that individual leisure activities can serve their long- term goals.”
32. Which statement illustrates the participants enjoying their Halloween less?
A. They are enthusiastic party- goers.
B. They enjoy relaxing with their family.
C. They consider trick or treating boring.
D. They put much value on responsibilities.
33. Why were the participants asked to read the news articles?
A. To examine their productivity.
B. To shape their attitude to leisure.
C. To inform them of the cat videos.
D. To measure their happiness level.
34. What aspect of leisure is worth attention according to Tonietto?
A. Its accessibility. B. Its various types.
C. Its potential contributions. D. Its flexibility.
35. What is the main idea of the text?
A. Happiness comes from real satisfaction of life.
B. Pursuing happiness intentionally might backfire.
C. Believing leisure is wasteful reduces happiness.
D. More leisure doesn't necessarily bring contentment.

阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Maybe you are probably getting an earful(训斥) from your inner voice. 36 . Here are several ways to change your self- talk script and to use your inner voices to perform better.
Listen critically to your inner critic
In high- pressure situations, self- talk is often critical. Instead of thinking deliberately and logically, our inner voices are caused by emotion. That influences everything from how we talk to ourselves to our behaviors. 37 . And when your inner voices start to fill with words of frustration and discouragement, pause the conversation as you consider ways to change it.
Create psychological distance from yourself
One effective way to manage stress is to create psychological distance. This can be achieved by using second- or third- person pronouns when referring to the situation. Asking yourself, “ Why are you feeling so stressed?” is one way to create the psychological distance you need to regulate emotion. 38.
Fit your conversation to your goal
39 . Instructional self- talk like “ shoulders back” or “ keep the left arm straight” works to improve technique. Motivational self- talk such as “ you’ve got this” or “ keep going” can help with confidence, strength, or endurance. It's important to be aware of the type of self- talk you are using and make sure it aligns with (使一致) your goals and needs.
40
Demeaning or negative self- talk is only going to increase your stress and hold you back. Instead, speak compassionately to yourself— just as you would to a friend. Recreate negative messages to include positive content. “I am not good at this.” can be changed to “ Relax. You are prepared for this.” “I don't know what to say.” can be replaced by “ Remember to smile and ask good questions.”
A. Treat yourself as a friend
B. Make as many friends as possible
C. Using instructional language is appropriate
D. Different types of self- talk work best for specific goals
E. So your first step is to listen critically to what you are saying to yourself
F. Often, negative comments in your head make it difficult for you to succeed
G. This way you might find your task an interesting challenge instead of a threat

Which Matters More---Major or University?
第二节(满分 25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
In April last year, sitting in the back of the car, my two daughters, Nia, 10 and Robyn, 8, chatted away about the latest electronic devices. “Mum, can I get a new phone for my birthday?” Nia asked. “No, love,” I replied. “Can we go to a theme park this year?” Robyn asked. “That’s very expensive,” I said. Disappointment entered our car like a dark cloud, putting an end to the chat.
Arriving home, I switched on my laptop, went through pictures taken in Uganda (乌干达). A few months before, I’d been there, working with local schools. As an officer for Teams4u, a charity that provides resources to people in need, I’d seen what life was like there. I went there twice a year and loved it. “You must bring your family next time,” one of the local teachers had said to me. My girls had never been out to Africa with me before, but were always wide-eyed as I told my adventures.
Life in Uganda was very different from what we were used to. Children there had little to eat for lunch. There were no proper desks and chairs in the classroom. I’d been out there to help, but there was still a lot of work to do in some remote schools.
During dinner, Nia asked me, “Mum, can we dine out?” “Homemade food is boring,” Robyn complained. I didn’t say a word.
That night in bed, I thought about the invitation from the teacher in Uganda. By the following morning, I’d made my decision. “Girls, we’re going to Uganda! For Two weeks!” I announced. Nia and Robyn were surprised at first but soon became excited! Uganda wasn’t a theme park, but it was an adventure anyway.
So, a few weeks later, in May last year, we landed in the capital city of Kampala. That night, we all slept under mosquito nets (蚊帐) in the blazing (燃烧的) heat --- we were worlds away from home.
注意:
1. 续写的词数应为150 左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡相应位置作答。
The next morning, we headed out to a remote school with resources.
Upon returning to the UK, the change in Nia and Robyn was evident.

Which Matters More--- Major or University
Recently, a survey was conducted about which matters more in senior high students’ academic performances and career paths, the major or university.
As it turned out, 48 percent of the students surveyed believe the university plays a more important role in shaping their future. With academic training, lectures and different clubs, an excellent university brings many unseen benefits. However, 33 percent argue the major matters more. After all, different majors will lead to different career paths which ultimately contribute to different incomes. Still, 19% have ambiguous thoughts yet.
Personally, I believe our life is not necessarily determined by them. Individual development is closely related to our overall performance in the university.
第二节
The next morning, we headed out to a remote school with resources. When we arrived, the children welcomed us with big smiles. Nia and Robyn were shocked to see the simple classrooms and the lack of basic facilities. They quickly got involved, helping to distribute the resources and playing with the children. During the two weeks, they learned to appreciate what they had and realized the importance of helping others.
Upon returning to the UK, the change in Nia and Robyn was evident. They no longer complained about trivial things and became more grateful for their lives. They also started to save money to support the charity. I was proud to see their growth and the positive impact the trip had on them. It was a journey that they would never forget.

They have contributed to American history and culture, from the first Filipinos arriving in what is now known as California to the Chinese laborers completing the United States transcontinental railroad. Asian Americans are now the fastest growing Ethnic group in America. On Sunday, May 16th, many people gathered in Chicago's Chinatown to celebrate through speeches from distinguished political leaders and various entertainers' performances. Those who arrived early in the day started with dim sum and went shopping in the local stores for groceries, souvenirs, clothing, etc. They also visited the local Chinese American Museum or the Heritage Museum of Asian Art. After the afternoon entertainment performances concluded, they went with friends or family for dinner at one of the many fine Chinese restaurants.
