第二部分: 阅读理解(共20小题, 每小题2.5分, 满分50分)
阅读下列短文, 从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中, 选出最佳选项。
A
If you’re new to a school or you are shy or tend to not get out of your comfort zone, making new friends at school might seem like a challenge. Luckily, you can overcome that challenge by looking for people with the same interests as you and by being friendly when you meet new people. Also, participate in after-school clubs and events whenever you get the chance, since that will help you meet people outside of class!
Look for people who have the same hobbies as you.
You’re more likely to be friends with someone if you have something in common with them. Try to find clubs or groups based on your favorite hobbies, then join them to meet like-minded people. Also, pay attention to people who spend their free time doing the same things you love to do.
If you’re a passionate reader, join a book club, go to public readings, or start a conversation with someone who carries novels around with their textbooks.
Spend time around people who show kindness.
Finding someone who will treat you well and support you is more important than popularity. Avoid spending time with people who talk bad about others or put them down. Instead, look for people who invite others to sit with them at lunch, who encourage others when they speak up in class, or who are always willing to help when someone needs a hand.
Introduce yourself to new people whenever possible.
When you’re around someone you don’t know, it is not unusual to just sit there quietly, especially if you’re shy. However, you and the other person will both be more comfortable after a simple introduction. Make eye contact with the person, smile, and try to seem warm and relaxed instead of nervous or anxious. Then, break the ice by talking about whatever is going on around you.
Keep the conversation going with open-ended questions.
When you start talking to someone, try asking them questions about what they like to see what you have in common with them. However, avoid simply asking yes or no questions, since one-word answers don’t necessarily keep a conversation alive. You can ask questions about whatever you’re already talking about, or you can change the subject if you feel that ran its course.
36. Who is the passage intended for?
A. Teachers. B. Students. C. Parents. D. Adults.
37. If you are fond of reading, you can ________.
A. join a club to make friends
B. approach people with lots of hobbies
C. spend your free time meeting different people
D. talk to people with the same interests
38. According to Paragraph 4, who is more likely to be a good friend?
A One who enjoys the popularity.
B. One who talks bad about others.
C. One who wants to help you.
D. One who always put others down.
39. According to Paragraph 5, what should you do first when you meet someone you don’t know well?
A. Start with a warm handshake.
B. Make eye contact with the person.
C. Start with a brief introduction of yourself.
D. Start by talking about a serious topic.
40. You should avoid asking yes or no questions to ________.
A. keep the conversation going B. end the conversation
C show kindness D. respect others

Samuel Osmond is a 19-year-old law student from Cornwall, England. He never studied the piano. However, he can play very difficult musical pieces by musicians such as Chopin and Beethoven just a few minutes after he hears them. He learns a piece of music by listening to it in parts. Then he thinks about the notes in his head. Two years ago, he played his first piece Moonlight Sonata(奏鸣曲)by Beethoven. He surprised everyone around him.
Amazed that he remembered this long and difficult piece of music and played it perfectly, his teachers say Samuel is unbelievable .They say his ability is very rare, but Samuel doesn’t even realize that what he can do is special. Samuel wanted to become a lawyer as it was the wish of his parents, but music teachers told him he should study music instead. Now, he studies law and music.
Samuel can’t understand why everyone is so surprised. “I grew up with music. My mother played the piano and my father played the guitar. About two years ago, I suddenly decided to start playing the piano, without being able to read music and without having any lessons. It comes easily to me ---I hear the notes and can bear them in mind---each and every note,” says Samuel.
Recently, Samuel performed a piece during a special event at his college. The piece had more than a thousand notes. The audience was impressed by his amazing performance. He is now learning a piece that is so difficult that many professional pianists can’t play it. Samuel says confidently,” It’s all about super memory---I guess I have that gift.”
However, Samuel’s ability to remember things doesn’t stop with music. His family says that even when he was a young boy, Samuel heard someone read a story, and then he could retell the story word for word.
Samuel is still only a teenager. He doesn’t know what he wants to do in the future. For now, he is just happy to play beautiful music and continue his studies.

Scientists today are making greater effort to study ocean currents (洋流). Most do it using satellites and other high-tech equipment. However, ocean expert Curtis Ebbesmeyer does it in a special way——by studying movements of random floating garbage. A scientist with many years’ experience, he started this type of research in the early 1990s when he heard about hundreds of athletic shoes washing up on the shores of the northwest coast of the United States. There were so many shoes that people were setting up swap meets to try and match left and right shoes to sell or wear.
Ebbesmeyer found out in his researches that the shoes — about 60,000 in total — fell into the ocean in a shipping accident. He phoned the shoe company and asked if they wanted the shoes back. As expected, the company told him that they didn’t. Ebbesmeyer realized this could be a great experiment. If he learned when and where the shoes went into the water and tracked where they landed, he could learn a lot about the patterns of ocean currents.
The Pacific Northwest is one of the world’s best areas for beachcombing (海滩搜寻) because winds and currents join here, and as a result, there is a group of serious beachcombers in the area. Ebbesmeyer got to know a lot of them and asked for their help in collecting information about where the shoes landed. In a year he collected reliable information on 1, 600 shoes. With this data, he and a colleague were able to test and improve a computer program designed to model ocean currents, and publish the findings of their study.
As the result of his work, Ebbesmeyer has become known as the scientist to call with questions about any unusual objects found floating in the ocean. He has even started an association of beachcombers and ocean experts, with 500 subscribers from West Africa to New Zealand. They have recorded all lost objects ranging from potatoes to golf gloves.
46. The underlined phrase “swap meets” in Paragraph 1 is closest in meaning to ______________.
A. fitting rooms B. trading fairs
C. business talks D. group meetings
47. Ebbesmeyer phoned the shoe company to find out _____________.
A. what caused the shipping accident
B. when and where the shoes went missing
C. whether it was all right to use their shoes
D. how much they lost in the shipping accident
48. How did Ebbesmeyer prove his assumption?
A. By collecting information from beachcombers.
B. By studying the shoes found by beachcomber.
C. By searching the web for ocean currents models.
D. By researching ocean currents data in the library.
49. Ebbesmeyer is most famous for ________.
A. traveling widely the coastal cities of the world
B. making records for any lost objects on the sea
C. running a global currents research association
D. phoning about any doubtful objects on the sea
50. What is the purpose of the author in writing this passage?
A. To call people’s attention to ocean pollution.
B. To warn people of shipping safety in the ocean.
C. To explain a unique way of studying ocean currents.
D. To give tips on how to search for lost objects on the beach.
D
It was once common to regard Britain as a society with class distinction. Each class had unique characteristics.
In recent years, many writers have begun to speak the decline of class and classless society in Britain. And in modern day consumer society everyone is considered to be middle class.
But pronouncing the death of class is too early. A recent wide-ranging society of public opinion found 90 percent of people still placing themselves in particular class; 73 percent agreed that class was still a vital part of British society; and 52 percent thought there were still sharp class differences. Thus, class may not be culturally and politically obvious, yet it remains an important part of British society. Britain seems to have a love of stratification.
One unchanging aspect of a British person’s class position is accent. The words a person speaks tell her or his class. A study of British accents during the 1970s found that a voice sounding like a BBC newsreader was viewed as the most attractive voice. Most people said this accent sounded educated and soft. The accents placed at the bottom in this study, on the other hand, were regional (地区的) city accents. These accents were seen as common and ugly. However, a similar study of British accents in the US turned these results upside down and placed some regional accents as the most attractive and BBC English as the least. This suggests that British attitudes towards accent have deep roots and are based on class prejudice.
In recent years, however, young upper middle-class people in London, have begun to adopt some regional accents, in order to hide their class origins. This is an indication of class becoming unnoticed. However, the 1995 pop song Common People puts forward the view that though a middle-class person may want to live like common people they can never appreciate the reality of a working-class life.
51. A recent study of public opinion shows that in modern Britain _______.
A. it is time to end class distinction B. most people belong to middle class
C. it is easy to recognize a person’s class D. people regard themselves socially different
52. The underlined word “stratification” in Paragraph 3 is closest in meaning to _______.
A. variety B. class differentiation
C. authority D. qualification
53 The study in the US showed that BBC English was regarded as_______.
A. regional B. educated C. prejudiced D. unattractive
54. British attitudes towards accent _______.
A. don’t show person’s class position B. are based on regional status
C. are shared by the Americans D. have changed in recent years
55. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. The middle class is expanding. B. A person’s accent reflects his class.
C. Class is a key part of British society. D. Each class has unique characteristics.

When I was a kid, there was only one way my parents would let me stay home from school and that was if l had a high fever. Most of my friends could stay home due to a stomachache or a mild fever—but not me…I had to be dying in order to stay home. By the way, my parents are both doctors. My parents used to say that they were teaching me how to have a good work ethic(职业道德). I didn't understand the connection until last week.
The other day I was on the train and sat behind a young man who was complaining to his friend about his life. He went on for twenty minutes about how his passion in life was to make movies, but he wouldn't pursue it because he had no clue if he could make enough money and he didn't want to waste time because it would take years to make it big. He then admitted to thinking about buying stocks(股票)by borrowing money because he thought he could easily make six figures within one year. His friend agreed with him and said, "The stock is good because you can make tons of money and only work for a short time."
I think they were indulging(沉溺)in the wildest fantasy. Many people these days don't realize that when things seem to happen immediately, it is only because a lot of effort, determination and time have gone into them and it isn't due to some miraculous(不可思议的)event. The easier it looks, the more hours go into it. There is no excuse for laziness.
Looking at the two young men, all of a sudden I was having a flashback of being ten years old and watching the television show Fame.
In the show the dance teacher told her students, "If you want fame, fame costs and here's how you start paying for it…sweat." Every time we watched that show, my dad would proudly say how right the teacher was because in order to succeed you have to work hard.

【61题答案】
【答案】Dear Chris,
I hope this letter finds you well. I’m excited to tell you about an environmental project that our school recently launched called the “Green Transportation Day.”
The project aims to promote eco-friendly commuting by encouraging students and staff to walk, cycle, or use public transportation at least once a week. It not only helps reduce our carbon footprint but also raises awareness about the importance of sustainable living. This initiative has had a positive impact on me and my classmates. We’ve become more conscious of our daily transportation choices and are more committed to protecting our environment. It’s great to see everyone actively participating and discussing ways to contribute more.
I wonder if your school has organized similar environmental activities? I’d love to hear more about it! Looking forward to your reply.
Yours,
Li Jin
