I was never very neat, while my roommate Kate was fairly organized. Each of her objects had its place, but mine always hid somewhere. She even labeled everything. I always looked for everything. Over time, Kate got neater and I got messier. She would push my dirty clothing over, and I would lay my books on her tidy desk. We both got tired of each other.
War broke out one evening. Kate came into the room. Soon, I heard her screaming, “Take your shoes away! Why under my bed!” Deafened, I saw my shoes flying at me. I jumped to my feet and started yelling. She yelled back louder.
The room was filled with anger. We could not have stayed together for a single minute but fora phone call. Kate answered it. From her end of the conversation, I could tell right away her grandma was seriously ill. When she hung up, she quickly crawled under her covers, sobbing.
Obviously, that was something she should not go through alone. All of a sudden, a warm feeling of sympathy rose up in my heart.
Slowly, I collected the pencils, took back the books, made my bed, cleaned the socks and swept the floor, even on her side. I got so into my work that I even didn’t notice Kate had sat up.
She was watching, her tears dried and her expression one of disbelief. Then, she reached out her hands to grasp mine. I looked up into her eyes. She smiled at me. “Thanks.”
Kate and I stayed roommates for the rest of the year. We didn’t always agree, but we learned the key to living together: giving in, cleaning up and holding on.

26. How is Paragraph 1 mainly developed?
A. By analyzing causes. B. By following time order.
C. By describing a process. D. By showing differences.
27. What might be the best title for the story?
A. My Friend Kate. B. Learning to Be Roommates.

Once upon a time, a daughter complained to her father that her life was unhappy and that she was tired of struggling all the time.
Her father, a chef, took her to the kitchen. He filled three pots with water and placed each on a high fire. Once the three pots began to boil, he placed potatoes, eggs and coffee beans in them. After 20 minutes, he took them out, putting the potatoes and eggs in a bowl and the coffee in a cup. Turning to his daughter, he said, “Look closer, and touch the potatoes.” So she did and noted that they were soft. He then asked her to take an egg and break it After pulling off the shell, she observed the hard-boiled egg. Finally, he asked her to taste the coffee. Its good smell brought a smile to her face.
“Father, what does this mean?” she asked. He then explained that the potatoes, the eggs and the coffee beans were in the same adversity (逆境) — the boiling water. However, each one reacted differently.
The strong and hard potato became soft and weak in boiling water. The egg was fragile, with the thin outer shell protecting its liquid until it was put in the boiling water. Then the inside of the egg became hard. However, the coffee beans were unique. After they were exposed to the boiling water, they changed the water and created something new. “Which one do you want to be like,” he asked. “When adversity knocks on your door, how will you respond?”
In life, challenges happen to us all, but the only thing that truly matters is what happens within us.

C. Thank his partner and lead her to a seat.
A 19. B 20. C
If you wish to dance with a certain lady, go to her bow and say may I have the pleasure of a dance. If it is a formal dance with programs she will tell you which dance she will have with you. If there are no programs she will either rise and dance with you or she may say I have this dance taken. This may be a polite way of saying that she does not want to dance with you or it may be that she is tired and wants to rest. Do not expect a lady whom you have engaged in advance for a dance to make any attempt to find you? It is her part to remain seated until you find her bow and say I believe this is my dance. At the end of the dance, thank your partner, but do not leave her until you have conducted her to a seat. If you are introduced to a lady, you must have necessity ask her for a dance. If you cannot dance very well, it is always permissible to ask a lady if she is willing to sit out a dance with you.

24. What made Kate angry one evening?
A. She couldn’t find her books. B. She saw the author’s shoes beneath her bed.
C. She got the news that her grandma was ill. D. She heard the author shouting loud.
25. Why did the author tidy up the room?
A. Because she wanted to show her care. B. Because she hated herself for being so messy.
C. Because she was scared by Kate’s anger. D. Because she was asked by Kate to do so.
26. How is Paragraph 1 mainly developed?
A. By analyzing causes. B. By following time order.
C. By describing a process. D. By showing differences.
27. What might be the best title for the story?
A. My Friend Kate. B. Learning to Be Roommates.
C. How to Be Organized. D. Hard Work Pays Off.
B 25. A 26. D 27. B

33. Why did the girl complain to her father?
A. Because of her father's busy work. B. Because of her hard life.
C. Because of her tiring job. D. Because of the food her father cooked.

A. Different people have different reactions towards adversity.
B. The father was quite good at cooking.
C. Adversity will knock on everyone's door.
D. The girl liked the coffee best.

How to be a better reader
Reading is an extremely important skill.___36___ Here are some suggestions on how to be a better reader.
Know your reading purpose.___37___ The kind of reading you do in class or for your homework is different from how you read a novel for pleasure in the summer vacation. If you know your reading purposes, you can choose the best reading methods.
Use all the information in the book. Good textbooks are well-organized with title subtitles, introductions, summaries or conclusions. Many books also have pictures with captions(说明文字).___38___ Another aspect of good writing is that each paragraph has a topic sentence. If you concentrate on understanding the topic sentence this may help you to understand what comes next.
___39___ You can't really expect to understand a difficult book if you are trying to read in the same room with the television on and your little brother distracting(使某人分心) you. The same goes for reading on the bus on the way to school. You can't expect to read a textbook and listen to music at the same time either. Try to find a quiet and comfortable place with good light, and your dictionaries and other materials nearby.
Use your dictionary wisely. F 37. G 38. C 39. B 40. D
Reading is an extremely important skill.(阅读是一项极为重要的技能。) Here are some suggestions on how to be a better reader.(这里有一些关于如何成为更好的读者的建议。)
The kind of reading you do in class or for your homework is different from how you read a novel for pleasure in the summer vacation.(你在课堂上或功课中阅读的方式与你在暑假里阅读小说的方式不同。)
Many books also have pictures with captions.(许多书里的图片带有文字说明。)
A common mistake of ESL students is to look up each unknown word in the texts they are given to read.(以英语为第二语言的学生常犯的一个错误是他们在阅读时查找每一个不认识的单词。) It can even make understanding more difficult because by the time you reach the end of the paragraph you have forgotten what you read at the beginning!( 这甚至会使理解变得更加困难,因为到了段尾,你已经忘记了之前阅读的内容!) 符合上下文语境,该选项中的it指代的是前一句子中的to look up each unknown word in the texts they are given to read(在阅读时查找每一个不认识的单词)。
第5小题答案D项中的“it”指代前一句话to look up each unknown word in the texts they are given to read。
