I am a firm believer that the pain is almost gone but the feeling of success will stay forever. I was among the 38, 000 runners who participated in the marathon, the largest event of its kind in Asia.
What made me decide to participate in the marathon was because of the insistence of my wife, who had run the half-marathon previously. This year, she wanted me to participate along with her. Unexpectedly, her application got rejected while mine got accepted.
Though I had been into fitness training before, it seemed to be a daunting task to run 21 km. I started training about 10 weeks before the day. I had made up my mind to finish the run. So I tried my best to accommodate training into my busy schedule whenever I could.
What’s more, I remembered that four weeks into my training, my shoes were worn. I searched and hunted and literally spent a fortune on a new pair of shoes. However, right on the first day of running with them, I felt that they were not for me. I preserved, thinking that my discomfort was because the shoes were new. Eventually, I gave up on them. I even tried looking for another new pair of shoes, but couldn’t find that were as comfortable as my old ones.
Finally, on 16th January 2011, I ran and completed the half-marathon. And I did it in my old shoes. Now, when I think about it, it all seems so easy. All I had to do was to picture completing the run in good time in my mind.
What I have learned from the experience is that completing a marathon is like any other goal in life — largely a mind-over-matter phenomenon. In other words, unless you believe you can reach your goal, you’ve lost even before you begin. No doubt, factors such as hard work, experience and talent help to a greater or lesser degree. But without your belief that you will get there, every goal remains difficult to achieve.
4. Why did the writer participate in the marathon at first?
A. It was the largest event of its kind. B. He had run the half-marathon before.
C. His coach inspired him to have a try. D. His wife insisted on him participating.
5. What can we learn from the text?
A. The writer went all out to do his training. B. The writer was the best competitor.
C. The writer’s fitness was little help to him. D. The writer’s old shoes were very expensive.
6. What does the underlined phrase “a mind-over-matter phenomenon” mean in paragraph 6?
A. Winning a marathon depends on strict rules rather than shoes.
B. Confidence is the key factor in a marathon in the author’s view.
C. It would be easy to win a marathon if you have essential shoes.
D. Belief can ensure you to succeed in a marathon sooner or later.
7. What kind of person is the author according to the text?
A. Humorous and cautious. B. Perseverant and thoughtful.
C. Considerate and modest. D. Ambitious and adaptable.
【答案】4. D 5. A 6. B 7. B

Imagine being able to go to your local park and pick some tomatoes, potatoes or even bananas to take home for dinner. Sounds too good to be true, right? For residents of Andernach, a German city, it’s not just a dream — it’s their reality. In 2010, Andernach began its “edible city” project, planting 101 varieties of tomatoes in public green spaces around the city centre. Its 30,000 residents are free to help themselves to whatever grows, as are any other visitors. Every year a new type of plant is introduced. In 2011, 100 types of beans were planted, while 2012 saw the introduction of 20 onion varieties. The town’s motto (座右铭) is, “Picking is encouraged — help yourself! ”
It’s a community effort, as local citizens are encouraged to help plant and maintain the gardens. This offers an opportunity to socialize as well as to learn about planting, cultivating and harvesting food. “I often drop by to pick some herbs that I’m missing at home. Everything is easily accessible. There aren’t any fences. You just take what you need. The only thing is you have to be quick once the fruits are ripe or they’ll all be gone! ” said a local historian.
Andernach may be the first, but it isn’t the only edible city. It’s part of the Edible Cities Network, an EU-funded project connecting green urban food initiatives (倡议) around the world. Other edible cities include Carthage in Tunisia, Havana in Cuba and Šempeter-Vrtojba in Slovenia. In February 2022, the first Edible Cities Network Conference took place. Dr. Ina Säumel, Principal Investigator of the Edible Cities Network, called it, “a unique opportunity to invite researchers and practitioners (从业人员) of Edible City Solutions to the same table and unite theory with practice”.
Ultimately, the Edible Cities Network aims to create “greener, more edible and, above all, more livable cities”. It is a response to the pressures of climate change, and a cause for hope.
8. What is paragraph 1 mainly about?
A. The process of Andernach’s growth. B. The green food project in Andernach.
C. Methods of planting vegetables in Europe. D. The popularity of Andernach’s city design.
9. What is the attitude of the local historian mentioned in paragraph 2 towards the project?
A Doubtful. B. Indifferent. C. Positive. D. Negative.
10. What can be inferred from paragraph 3?
A. Green urban food has drawn more attention. B. German rural areas will follow the trend too.
C. Asia will join the Edible Cities Network soon. D. Edible cities hold meetings on a regular base.
11. What is the ultimate goal of building Edible Cities Network?
A. To make a limited profit. B. To provide enough food.
C. To create happy urban life. D. To handle climate change

Emergency Mask Pod (面罩舱) is a plastic, 3D-printed and football-shaped case that contains a mask that protects the lungs of someone trapped in a fire until they were rescued. Alexis got the idea for the Emergency Mask Pod after hearing that a mother had thrown her baby out of the second floor window of their smoke-filled apartment during a fire in the building. The family was trapped in their apartment by the smoke.
Alexis wondered whether there was a means for people waiting outside, such as neighbors and first responders, to deliver smoke masks to people trapped in the second floors of burning buildings. Her research showed that there was no such delivery system, so Alexis set about to invent one.
First, she found a small, lightweight smoke mask. The next step was to develop a way to launch or throw the mask up into an open second-story window. Alexis built several different pods, which were tested by local firefighters. Each pod was cast into a second story window more than 290 times by a total of 37 firefighters. The football-shaped pod, which Alexis printed on her MakerBot 3D printer, was the clear winner, with an accuracy rate of over 70 percent.
The firefighters testing the Emergency Mask Pod told her that it is needed by firefighters arriving at the scene of a fire. They told Alexis that when they find people trapped inside, they wish they could give them some form of relief so they can breathe safely while firefighters try to reach them. A smoke delivery system could be used to provide that relief.
The Emergency Mask Pod requires no special equipment, training, or permits; people at the scene of a fire could help fire victims (受害者) trapped inside smoky rooms without hesitation. EMTs, police officers, and firefighters could keep the mask and EM Pod in their vehicles and apartment complexes could store them in approachable places like community centers. The mask could easily be retrieved by victims and put on, giving them precious time for firefighters to rescue them and potentially saving hundreds or thousands of lives.
12. Why is the Emergency Mask Pod invented?
A. To improve the design of smoke masks.
B. To provide a way to deliver smoke masks.
C. To help firefighters practice throwing skills.
D. To protect first responders’ eyes from smoke.
13. How did Alexis test the effectiveness of different pods?
A. By burning them in the local fire departments.
B. By studying different materials for making pods.
C. By doing a survey of people trapped in a fire before.
D. By having firefighters throw them into windows many times.
14. Which word is closest in meaning to “retrieved” in the last paragraph?
A. Returned. B. Accessed. C. Relieved. D. Launched.
15. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. Surviving the Flame: New Rescue Skills
B. Smoke and Masks: The Future of Fire Safety
C. A Lifeline through the Smoke: The Mask Pod
D. Breaking through Barriers: Firefighters’ Creations
【答案】12. B 13. D 14. B 15. C

【12题详解】
细节理解题。第二段提到“Alexis wondered whether there was a means for people waiting outside, such as neighbors and first responders, to deliver smoke masks to people trapped in the second floors of burning buildings. Her research showed that there was no such delivery system, so Alexis set about to invent one.”(亚历克西斯想知道,是否有办法让等待在外面的人,比如邻居和急救人员,给被困在燃烧建筑物二楼的人送去防烟口罩。
第三段第三、四句提到“Alexis built several different pods, which were tested by local firefighters. Each pod was cast into a second story window more than 290 times by a total of 37 firefighters.”(亚历克西斯建造了几个不同的吊舱,由当地消防员进行了测试。每个吊舱被37名消防员扔进二楼窗户290多次。)由此判断,亚力克西斯是通过让消防员扔来测试其有效性的。故选D。
【14题详解】
词句猜测题。根据文章最后一段“......by victims and put on, giving them precious time for firefighters to rescue them and potentially saving hundreds or thousands of lives.”(可以很容易地被受害者并戴上,为消防员拯救他们提供了宝贵的时间,并可能挽救数百或数千人的生命。)可知,这种面具如果要能很快地被受害者戴上的话,一定要能够方便受害者得到,这样才能为消防员的解救争取时间,retrieved在此处的意思是“取回”,与“accessed”(接近;获取)意思最接近。A. Returned.归还;B. Accessed.接近;获取;C. Relieved.缓解;减轻;D. Launched.发射。B项与划线词意思最为接近。故选B。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。文章第一段通过一个让人痛心的事情引出亚克力西斯对于emergency mask pod的想法,包括如何更加有效地投放面罩,其中最后一段提出“The mask could easily be retrieved by victims and put on, giving them precious time for firefighters to rescue them and potentially saving hundreds or thousands of lives.”(这种面具可以很容易地被受害者收回并戴上,为消防员拯救他们提供了宝贵的时间,并可能挽救数百或数千人的生命。)可知,文章主要介绍了Emergency Mask Pod的发明及其在火灾中的重要作用,C项“A Lifeline through the Smoke: The Mask Pod”(穿越烟雾的生命线:面罩舱)符合文意。故选C。

Every new exercise routine comes a new risk of injury, whether it’s injuring a muscle from lifting or developing knee pain from running. Some people are unwilling to exercise for fear of injury.____16____There are estimated 8.6 million sports-related injuries each year in America. However, with the right methods, you can develop a well-rounded exercise routine, one that enlarges the benefits while reducing the risk of injury.
____17____One very common issue in runners is knee pain, which is often called “runner’s knee.” To prevent it, for some people, it’s useful to warm up before running. Another common overuse injury among runners is stress fractures (骨折). This often happens when a runner tries to add too many miles too quickly, without taking enough rest days.
Both of these injuries tend to happen because runners did something out of the ordinary compared to what they were trained to do. Take rest days, build up your mileage (里程) gradually and combine regular strength training.____18____
As with other injuries, the risk increases toward the end of a workout. It’s very essential to listen to your body.____19____When it comes to making progress in a workout routine, continuous exercise with a gradual progression is strongly recommended.
Exercise can put someone at risk of injury.____20____There should be a balance between pushing yourself to get better and pushing yourself toward an injury. So encourage yourself to do something that you are confident in doing.
A. These fears are based on facts.
B. Turn to a mixture of sports doctors.
C. This type of exercise can increase the risk of injury.
D. Therefore, the risk of hurting yourself will decrease.
E. But not exercising puts someone at risk of poor health.
F. Adjust in time, especially when tiredness starts to affect your form.

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
When I was seven years old, my family moved from Mexico to America. In Mexico, I was a cheerful girl who loved making people laugh with my jokes and inventing fun games to play with my friends. However, when I arrived in America, I found it hard to fit in, and I became quieter.
We lived in a small house with a modest yard where we grew vegetables-my responsibility. While I took pride in watching them grow, there were times when I dreamed of having a beautiful garden like my schoolmate Luella’s, with its delicate tulips (郁金香). Although Luella lived in the same neighborhood as me, we barely knew each other.
It was after a tornado that Luella and I finally became close friends.
The tornado struck on a Sunday afternoon. The gentle breeze transformed into a strong wind, and thick gray clouds filled the sky. Gradually, the tornado took shape, starting as a thin rope and growing into a large black funnel (漏斗). My entire family gathered in the bathroom, seeking shelter from the storm. Terrified, I sat close to my mom, knees in my chest. After the storm had passed, our worries and fears were replaced by relief that we were unharmed and that our house had remained undamaged.
As I stepped outside, I witnessed the extent of the damage the tornado had caused to our neighborhood. Across the street, a tall tree had fallen, crushing Luella’s garden in front of her yellow house. We hurried over to check on it. Fortunately, her family seemed to be away at the time, and no one was injured. However, her once-beautiful garden was in ruins, with the fallen tree destroying the tulips and debris (碎片) spread everywhere. I could only imagine how heartbroken they must feel seeing this.
Then my mom’s usual words rang in my ear, “It is more blessed to give than to receive,” and my family started to think about how we could help.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Just at that moment, Luella’s family returned in their car.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Even after the debris was cleared, I could still sense Luella’s sorrow for her lost garden.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 Just at that moment, Luella’ family returned in their car. Empathy surged within me as I saw their shock and disbelief. Approaching Luella, I tightly held her hands and said, “I’m so sorry for your loss, but thankfully you’re all right.” She weakly nodded, still puzzled by the shocking scene. My family volunteered to help clean up the mess, cutting down the branches and removing the fallen trees. To lift Luella’s spirits and give her comfort, I tried my best to cheer her up while tidying the garden with her, during which my own joyful personality seemed to revive a bit.
Even after the debris was cleared, I could still sense Luella’ sorrow for her lost garden. My heart went out to her, knowing how much she had cherished those tulips that she had devoted so much energy to. Determined to restore the beauty of the garden, I suggested we rebuild the garden, which Luella delightedly agreed. Carefully planted and watered, the new tulip seedlings once again filled the garden, which symbolized the beginning of our friendship, as well as the turning that I finally got embraced by this new environment. My mom was right: it’s more blessed to give than to receive because when you give, you may receive something unexpected in return.

4 Why did the writer participate in the marathon at first?

A. Doubtful.

Alexis wondered whether there was a means for people waiting outside such as neighbors and first responders, to deliver smoke masks to people trapped in the second floors of burning buildings.

注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Just at that moment, Luella’s family returned in their car.

Even after the debris was cleared, I could still sense Luella’s sorrow for her lost garden.
