At a high school in Indiana, a group of students are working on ideas to deal with climate change. One student, Murphy, suggests a large container filled with water that would heat up and produce steam (蒸汽) to power a car. Although the idea has limitations, climate scientist Ben Kravitz appreciates it, saying that steam power, while old, still works.
Kravitz developed a lesson with Paul Goddard, a research scientist, and Kirstin Milks, a high school science teacher. The lesson encourages students to think creatively about reducing pollution and solving global warming. Milks believes it’s important for students to not only understand the dangers of climate change but also feel confident to come up with solutions. She says, “These students will lead the future climate work.”
The lesson covers the basics of climate change, explaining that burning coal, oil, and gas gives off carbon dioxide (CO2), the main cause of global warming. Kravitz stresses that reducing greenhouse gas emissions (is the only lasting solution, but new technologies, such as wind and solar energy, are needed to make progress.
In the meantime, Kravitz and other scientists are exploring ways, such as climate engineering, to reduce the planet’s temperature. Climate engineering includes techniques like reflecting sunlight back into space or removing CO2 from the atmosphere. However, these ways come with risks, such as changing weather systems and rainfall patterns, leading to loss of biodiversity and impacting agriculture. Students are encouraged to think about such challenges when developing their ideas.
Through this lesson, Milks hopes to develop in students both awareness and optimism (乐观), showing them that they can play a role in solving global issues.
4. What is Murphy’s idea?
A Design a special car. B. Power cars with steam.
C. Discover new energy. D. Make a drinking machine.
5. Why was this lesson developed?
A. To equip students for climate action.
B. To discuss the benefits of using solar energy.
C. To encourage students to stop using coal and gas.
D. To explain climate change affects weather systems.
6. What can we know about climate engineering?
A. It can absorb the sunlight. B. It can add CO2 to the atmosphere.
C. It may enrich the biodiversity. D. It may have effects on agriculture.
7. What is a suitable title for the passage?
A. The challenges of climate engineering.
B. Students’ contributions to steam power.
C The development of climate-related technologies.
D. Students’ creative ideas for a better climate future.

Have you ever been in a situation where you needed to do well but failed because of the pressure? You’re not alone. Steven Chase, a scientist at Carnegie Mellon University, studied what could happen in the brain under pressure. The experiments show that pressure is linked to a drop in activity in the brain area that prepares for movement, just as athletes fail under stress.
The team first experimented with certain monkeys and set up a computer task for them. The monkeys moved a cursor (光标) on a screen to get rewards ranging from small to medium, large, or even a rare and big “jackpot” which was meant to create high-pressure situations, similar to what athletes face in critical moments. To see the changes in brain activity, the researchers put a small chip (芯片) into the monkeys’ motor cortex, the part of the brain that controls movement. During jackpot setting, the activity of the neurons (神经元) that help in movement planning decreased. This drop in such activity made the monkeys less prepared, leading to worse performance.
The study showed a complex relationship between rewards and performance. The team have found that while small rewards can improve performance, too many rewards can actually make it worse. This is known as the “neural-bias hypothesis”, which says that too much pressure can destroy the brain’s best function. The research also looked into why motor preparation decreased under high pressure. It suggested that as the reward got bigger, the brain’s activity reached a peak and then started to decline.
In conclusion, understanding why people and animals fail under pressure can help us develop better ways to manage stressful situations and perform better when it matters most.
8. Why was the “jackpot” reward used in the experiment?
A. To create high-pressure situations. B. To train the problem-solving skills.
C. To improve monkeys’ intelligence. D. To provide extra food for monkeys.
9. How did the researchers measure brain activity in monkeys?
A. By observing their hobbies. B. By using a chip put in the brain.
C. By giving them similar rewards. D. By monitoring their heart rate.
10. What does the “neural-bias hypothesis” suggest?
A. Rewards hardly affect brain function. B. Monkeys perform better under no pressure.
C. Small rewards seldom improve performance. D. Too many rewards can cause bad performance.
11. What does the study focus on?
A. Approaches to dealing with great stress. B. How rewards impact brain development.
C. Links of pressure to performance failure. D. How good athletes face their challenges.

Talking about glasses, not just any kind but those that are kind to the planet, we mean the green glasses. Have you heard of glasses that look stylish, feel comfortable, and most importantly, don’t harm the environment? Let’s get to know more about the sustainable glasses.
You might be surprised to learn how far your glasses are from green. They’re often made from plastic and metal, which use a lot of energy and resources to produce. The process of making them can be harmful to the environment. From the harmful chemicals used in the frames (镜框) to the energy needed to get them to you, there’s a lot that can be improved.
As for the new type of glasses, we pay special attention to how the glasses are made. Companies that care about the environment will make sure their glasses last a long time, from when they start making them to when they’re no longer needed. This means they use materials that come from renewable sources rather than limit themselves to local materials. For example, they might use wood from forests that are managed well or recycled materials. They also use energy-saving machines and try to reduce waste. In a word, they make sure that the glasses are made in a responsible way. To our customers, green glasses are the best option for us to protect our eyes and the planet at the same time. By choosing these glasses, we’re helping the planet and making a positive change.
The future of glasses is looking bright! The way glasses are made is changing, with green materials and methods. As more people become interested in green products and technology improves, there will be more green choices available. Choose green glasses that look great and help the planet. Be part of the change and see the future in a better way.
12. What does the underlined word “sustainable” in paragraph 1 probably mean?
A. Limited. B. Eco-friendly. C. Expensive. D. Old-fashioned.
13. Which can best describe the new type of glasses?
A. It uses plastic frames. B. It adopts the latest design.
C. Its material is got locally. D. Its entire lifecycle is considered.
14. What is the writer’s attitude towards the future of the glasses?
A. Optimistic. B. Worried. C. Doubtful. D. Unclear.
15. What is the purpose of the passage?
A. To inform the history of glasses production.
B. To show the latest fashion trends in glasses.
C. To persuade readers to choose the green glasses.
D. To explain the challenges faced by glasses stores.

“Did you hear what happened to Adam Last Friday?” Lindsey whispers to Tori.
With her eyes shining, Tori brags, “You bet I did, Sean told me two days ago.”
What are Lindsey and Tori talking about? I can tell you what they are saying is not nice and not even true. Still, Lindsey and Tori aren’t very different from most students here at Linton High School, including me. Many of our conversations are gossip(流言蜚语). I have noticed the effects of gossip.
An important negative effect of gossip is that it can hurt the person being talked about. Usually, gossip spreads information about a topic - breakups, trouble at home, even dropping out - that a person would rather keep secret. The more embarrassing or shameful the secret is, the juicier the gossip it makes. Probably the worst type of gossip is the absolute lie, people often think of gossipers as harmless, but cruel lies can cause pain.
If we know that gossip can be harmful, then why do so many of us do it? That answer lies in another effect of gossip: the satisfaction it gives us. Sharing the latest rumor can make a person feel important because he or she knows something that others don’t. Similarly, hearing the latest rumor can make a person feel like part of the “in group”.
Gossip also can have a third effect: it strengthens unwritten, unspoken rules about how people should act. Professor David Wilson explains that gossip is important in policing behaviors in a group. Translated into high school terms, this means that if everybody you hang around with is laughing at what John wore or what Jane said, then you can bet that wearing or saying something similar will get you the same kind of negative attention. The do’s and don’ts conveyed through gossip will never show up in any student handbook.
The effects of gossip vary depending on the situation. The next time you feel the urge to spread the latest news, think about why you want to gossip and what effects your “juicy story” might have.

A 9. B 10. D 11. C

56. What’s the function of the first two paragraphs? what’s the genere of this passage?(narration, argumentation or exposition)

59. What’s the author’s attitude towards gossip? Which sentence exactly shows the authou’s attitude?
__________________________________________________________
60. Next time you meet with someone who spread gossip, what will you do?
__________________________________________________________
56. To introduce to the topic. Exposition
57. Gossip. By explaining/ by giving an example.
58. It can hurt the person being talked about;the satisfaction it gives us;it strengthens unwritten, unspoken rules about how people should act.
59. Negative/Be against/Opposed. The next time you feel the urge to spread the latest news, think about why you want to gossip and what effects your “juicy story” might have.
If I encounter someone spreading rumors and gossip next time, I will first remain calm and rational, and not be easily influenced by their words. Then, I will try to have a rational conversation with them, pointing out the harm and negative impact of rumors and gossip, encouraging them to stop spreading and respect the privacy and dignity of others. If the conversation fails, I will consider reporting the situation to relevant departments or responsible persons to maintain a healthy and harmonious social environment.

根据前两段内容““Did you hear what happened to Adam Last Friday?” Lindsey whispers to Tori. With her eyes shining, Tori brags, “You bet I did, Sean told me two days ago.”(“你听说亚当上周五发生了什么事吗?”林赛轻声对托里说。 Tori眼睛闪闪发光,吹嘘道:“你打赌我做到了,肖恩两天前告诉我的。”)”以及第三段的“What are Lindsey and Tori talking about? I can tell you what they are saying is not nice and not even true.(林赛和托里在说什么?我可以告诉你,他们说的内容不好,甚至不是真的。)”可知,前两段的功能是引入主题,通过Lindsey和Tori的对话,展示了流言蜚语在日常生活中的普遍存在,为后文深入探讨流言蜚语的影响和功能做了铺垫。另外,根据第四段“An important negative effect of gossip is that it can hurt the person being talked about. Usually, gossip spreads information about a topic - breakups, trouble at home, even dropping out - that a person would rather keep secret. The more embarrassing or shameful the secret is, the juicier the gossip it makes. Probably the worst type of gossip is the absolute lie, people often think of gossipers as harmless, but cruel lies can cause pain.(八卦的一个重要负面影响是,它会伤害被谈论的人。通常,八卦会传播一个人宁愿保密的话题——分手、家里的麻烦,甚至辍学。秘密越尴尬或可耻,八卦就越有趣。也许最糟糕的八卦类型是绝对的谎言,人们通常认为八卦者是无害的,但残酷的谎言会引起痛苦。)”以及第五段的“That answer lies in another effect of gossip: the satisfaction it gives us. Sharing the latest rumor can make a person feel important because he or she knows something that others don’t. Similarly, hearing the latest rumor can make a person feel like part of the “in group”.(答案在于八卦的另一个影响:它给我们带来的满足感。分享最新的谣言会让一个人感到重要,因为他或她知道别人不知道的事情。同样,听到最新的谣言会让人觉得自己是“群体中”的一员。)”可知,本文的文体是说明文(Exposition),旨在解释和阐述流言蜚语的现象、影响及其在社会中的作用。故答案为To introduce to the topic和Exposition。
根据第四段的“An important negative effect of gossip is that it can hurt the person being talked about.(八卦的一个重要负面影响是,它会伤害被谈论的人。)”以及第五段的“That answer lies in another effect of gossip: the satisfaction it gives us.(答案在于八卦的另一个影响:它给我们带来的满足感。)”和第六段的“Gossip also can have a third effect: it strengthens unwritten, unspoken rules about how people should act.(八卦还可以产生第三种效果:它强化了人们应该如何行事的不成文、不成文的规则。)”和最后一段的“The effects of gossip vary depending on the situation.(八卦的影响因情况而异。)” 另外,根据倒数第二段的“Translated into high school terms, this means that if everybody you hang around with is laughing at what John wore or what Jane said, then you can bet that wearing or saying something similar will get you the same kind of negative attention.(翻译成高中术语,这意味着如果你身边的每个人都在嘲笑约翰的穿着或简的话,那么你可以打赌,穿着或说类似的话也会给你带来同样的负面关注。)”,以及根据第四段“An important negative effect of gossip is that it can hurt the person being talked about. Usually, gossip spreads information about a topic - breakups, trouble at home, even dropping out - that a person would rather keep secret. The more embarrassing or shameful the secret is, the juicier the gossip it makes. Probably the worst type of gossip is the absolute lie, people often think of gossipers as harmless, but cruel lies can cause pain.(八卦的一个重要负面影响是,它会伤害被谈论的人。 By explaining/ by giving an example。
根据第四段首句“An important negative effect of gossip is that it can hurt the person being talked about.(八卦的一个重要负面影响是,它会伤害被谈论的人。)”以及第五段的“That answer lies in another effect of gossip: the satisfaction it gives us.(答案在于八卦的另一个影响:它给我们带来的满足感。)”和第六段的“Gossip also can have a third effect: it strengthens unwritten, unspoken rules about how people should act.(八卦还可以产生第三种效果:它强化了人们应该如何行事的不成文、不成文的规则。)” It can hurt the person being talked about;the satisfaction it gives us;it strengthens unwritten, unspoken rules about how people should act。
根据最后一段中的“The next time you feel the urge to spread the latest news, think about why you want to gossip and what effects your “juicy story” might have.(下次你有传播最新消息的冲动时,想想你为什么想八卦,你的“有趣的故事”可能会产生什么影响。)” 故答案为Negative/Be against/Opposed和The next time you feel the urge to spread the latest news, think about why you want to gossip and what effects your “juicy story” might have。
If I encounter someone spreading rumors and gossip next time, I will first remain calm and rational, and not be easily influenced by their words. Then, I will try to have a rational conversation with them, pointing out the harm and negative impact of rumors and gossip, encouraging them to stop spreading and respect the privacy and dignity of others.
