You see a fantastic offer, like a hotel room, You decide to book. Then it turns out there
is a service fee, Then a cleaning fee. Then a few other extra costs. By the time you pay the
final price, it is no longer the fantastic offer you thought
Welcome to the world of drip pricing - the practice of promoting something at an
attractive headline price and then, once you've committed to the purchase process, hitting you
with unavoidable add-ons that are "dripped".
In most cases, you see through all additionally added mandatory fees, and even though
you could relinquish the deal, you choose to bite the bullet and complete the deal. Resistance
to the idea of starting the search all over again is not simply a matter of laziness or indecision.
There's a profound psychological mechanism at play here, called the present bias.
In the paper, Doing It Now or Later, economist Matthew Rabin defines people's present-
biased preference via an example of choosing between doing seven hours of unpleasant activity
on April 1 or eight hours two weeks later: If asked on February 1, most people will choose
the earlier option. But if asked on April 1, given the same choice, most of us tend to put off
work till April 15. In simple terms, the inconvenience of doing something"right now" often
feels disproportionately large. Beyond the challenge of starting over, there's another
psychological phenomenon that drip pricing uses - loss aversion. Imagine you're booking
tickets for a show. Initially attracted by the headline price, you're now presented with
different seating categories. Seeing a VIP ticket is within your budget, you decide to fork out.
But then, during the checkout process, the drip begins. You realize you could have chosen
lower-category seats, but by this stage, you've already imagined yourself enjoying the show
from those nice seats, Going back to a cheaper seat will feel like a loss
Buyers would benefit from a ban on drip pricing. Many countries are taking steps to
protect consumers from drip pricing. The effectiveness of such measures, however, is
uncertain. Nonetheless, you can hopefully make a more informed decision by understanding
why the strategy works.
32. Which of the following is an example of drip pricing?
A. FlightHub introduces a bonus after you choose their flight.
B. Airbnb offers you a membership account when you book a trip.
C. Rent-A-Car charges wear and tear fees beyor.d the advertised price.
D. Ticketmaster provides optional items at later stages of your purchase.

A.Reach.
B. Abandon.

34. How does Rabin explain people's refusal to cancel an order and remake one?
A. People are likely to blindly stick to their initial intentions.
B. People like to grab earlier rewards and delay immediate costs.
C. People struggle to make a decision among multiple choices.
D. People tend to tolerate additional costs within their budget.
35. What is the author's main purpose in writing the text?
A. To explain why people fall into the drip pricing trick.

Few insects strike greater fear into the hearts of farm-owners than rosy apple aphids(蚓
虫), which feed on apple trees leaves, causing them to curl up and harden. This provides
shelter from pesticide(杀虫剂) sprays and a severe outbreak can reduce the yield by 80%.
To fight against rosy apple aphids, some suggest using tiny parasitoid wasps(寄生蜂)
Unlike predators(捕食者) that kill and eat their prey, these wasps allow their offspring to
feed on and ultimately kill the host.
Females inject their eggs into rosy apple aphids after mating, and the hatching offspring
consume the hosts' organs before emerging as adults. Employing these wasps could reduce or
cut out the need for chemical pesticides, saving money and helping fruit growers achieve the
premium-price-generating "organic" label that prohibits such chemicals.
Using wasps for pest control has a long history but has often failed. Researchers at the
Catholic University of Louvain believe this is due to a focus on the dietary needs of the flesh-
ating larvae(幼虫), neglecting those of the honey-loving adults. They suggest planting
lower banks beside trees to address this issue, as detailed in the Annals of Applied Biology.
To test this idea, they ran an experiment in an organic apple farm. They divided it into
six plots. Three, they planted with 3o wildflower species. The other three they left
lowerless, as controls. As aphid season approached, they attached to each of nine trees per
olot a tube containing about 1,25o wasp larvae. Then they examined selected trees on a ten
lay basis for aphids.
The presence of flowers, they found, was associated with a one-third reduction in aphid
iumbers, compared with the controls. Though that is not as impressive as the 80-9o% drop
ichieved with pesticide treatments, it is a proof of principle. And improved management and
nderstanding of the wasps' ecological needs could benefit fruit growers in looking to maintain
heir “organic" label while still harvesting crops.
i8. Why are rosy apple aphids a source of great anxiety for farmers?
A. They will easily go unnoticed.
B. They may cause a sharp outt.ut drop.
C. They provide shelter for bugs.
D. They reproduce on apple leaves.
9. Why may farmers prefer employing wasps for pest control?
A. It requires lttle monitoring.
B. It's convenient to operate.
C. It increases insects' populations
D. It's economical and eco-friendly
o. What can be inferred from the experiment?
A. Flowers can enhance aphid control.
B. Wasps can wipe out aphids completely.
C. Wasps are cheaper to apply than pesticides
D. Flowers compete with aphids for resources

Strategies to Become Emotionally Mature
Emotional maturity is crucial for personal growth and healthy relationships. Developing
emotional intelligence can be challenging, but with the right strategies, you can become
emotionally stronger and improve as a person.
Communicate Your Needs
36
This happens mostly in relationships. Your partner would want you to know
exactly what they want and when they want it. This can be extremely annoying. Just as you
cannot read someone else's mind, they can't read yours. You need to communicate your needs
to others, so do they.
Try Using"I" Statements
When discussing your feelings, use "I" statements instead of "You" statements. For
example, say"I feel hurt" rather than"You hurt me." This approach allows you to express
your emotions without placing blame, making it easier for others to understand your
perspective. 37
Take Responsibility For Your Actions
Just like your words, you need to take full responsibility for your actions. Many people
make silly excuses and don't take responsibility for their actions. That is where they hurt
others and themselves. If you have made a mistake and hurt others in the process, apologize
immediately. It won't bring your self-respect down. ,8 You will become emotionally
mature by doing this.
Avoid Negative People
You are known by the company you keep, It significantly influences your emotional well
being. 39 Distancing yourself from negative influences or emotionally controlling people is
vital. Remember, you are the CEO of your life - choose your associates wisely.
By applying these strategies, you can develop deeper into emotional maturity. 40
Start today, and embrace the journey toward becoming your best self.
A. It will actually help you win recognition from others.
B. People interact with us like we are mind readers sometimes
C. You can also earn respect of others and improve your intelligence
D. Thus, surround yourself with supportive individuals who uplift you
E. It also shows your emotional maturity by promoting gentle dialogue
F. Ultimately, you will gain healthier relationships and a more fulfilling life
G. People keep their emotions private and avoid communicating outside their circle

airport in the afternoon, after about 24 hours, the two sisters were both tired and stressed.
They carried their three heavy suitcases, stopped a taxi, got into it and headed to their rented

"We got to the apartment and no check-in instructions had arrived," Alice said. "The
owner was not available at that moment and the phone was powered off all the time."
Then they tried calling customer service, but not a live person was available. They could
do nothing but chat with a robot, but their problem was too complicated for the system. It

Immediately, they grabbed their suitcases and started rolling them down the sidewalk
toward the new apartment, though they had no idea whether the apartment would suit them.
They walked down a block and around the corner. Then they looked up, but what they saw
