I love winter birds and I love photographing them in snow. That being said, I admit that I'm a fair-weather birder(猎鸟者).Worse, I'm a lazy, fair-weather birder. I don't like weather extremes, so when it's very hot or really cold, it is hard to get me to leave the comfort of home. In summer, I only photograph hummingbirds(蜂鸟)in my yard, and in winter, I try to only go out on relatively mild days. Most of my bird photography is done within an hour's drive of my hometown of Elmira, Ont. So it's all about finding a balance that works.
The winter of 2014 was a great year for snowy owls(雪枭)here in Woolwich Township. One day in early March, I was on my way home from work when I noticed a beautiful snowy owl sitting in a tree right at the crossing. I pulled over to admire him, and then kept heading home unwillingly.
Two hundred meters or so down the road, there were two more snowy owls in a field by a fence, and in the next field over, another on top of a fence post. I couldn't find words to express my feeling at that moment. Thus I rushed home, grabbed my camera and went right back out to get some pictures. It was one of the most magical local birding moments I've ever experienced.
When I'm looking for excellent opportunities to photograph snowy owls and other birds without spending dozens of hours searching for them-and if I'm lucky, finding one that's semi-cooperative-I head to the Canadian Raptor Conservancy (CRC) or the Mountsberg Raptor Centre. I've attended so many photo sessions at each of these fantastic facilities that I've lost count of.
24. What factor has the most effect on whether the author goes out to photograph birds or not?
A. Road conditions. B. Personal emotion.
C. Weather conditions. D. Time arrangement.
25. How did the author feel when he saw the snowy owls on the way home?
A. Sad. B. Excited.
C. Untouched. D. Proud.
26. What does the underlined word "them" in Paragraph 4 refer to?
A. Opportunities. B. Moments.
C. Pictures. D. Birds.
27. What can we infer about the author?
A. The author only photographs snowy owls.
B. The author can take excellent photos easily.
C. The author makes a living by photographing birds.
D. The author values each chance to photograph birds.
C
He’s as big as a small golden dog and covered with scales (鳞片). He is the pangolin (穿山甲), an endangered animal.
According to the wildlife trade monitoring organization Traffic, about one million pangolins were killed from 2000 through 2013, mainly for their scales, which are used in medicine. Pangolins are sensitive creatures and picky eaters that only eat certain species of ants, a diet that’s very difficult to copy in the food chain.
“In the last decade, there’s been a huge growth trade in pangolins between continents, especially their scales,” says Dan Challender, chair of the pangolin specialist group. Previously, most pangolin killing happened within Asia, he says. This shift means that Asian pangolins are becoming difficult to find but that the value of the scales makes it worth the extra cost to take pangolins from Africa to Asia secretly.
All eight species of pangolins, four in Africa and four in Asia, are in danger of extinction due to the illegal trade. International trade in the four species of Asian pangolins has been banned since 2000. In the past few years, a ban on international commercial trade in all eight species has gone into effect. It was voted by 183 governments that are parties to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES), which is in charge of cross-border trade in wild animals and their parts.
Pangolins are eaten as bushmeat in western and central Africa and by some local groups in South and Southeast Asia. Their parts also are used in Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa, and elsewhere in sub-Saharan Africa as traditional medicine. Typically dried, ground into powder, and put into pills, pangolin scales are used in a range of traditional medicines to help mothers who have given birth to babies to recover. But they are now endangered. Perhaps no pangolins can be seen when our next generation grow up.
28. What do you know about pangolins from Paragraph 2?
A. Their meat is very delicious.
B. Their scales are of great value.
C. They are smaller than young dogs.
D. They are on the top of the food chain.
29. Why are pangolins brought from Africa to Asia?
A. Pangolins are cheaper in Africa.
B. No laws protect pangolins in Africa.
C. People in Asia can really save pangolins.
D. Pangolins have sharply decreased in numbers in Asia.
30. What does the fourth paragraph mainly tell us?
A. Pangolins have many different species.
B. The bans on pangolin trade are ineffective.
C. People used to take advantage of pangolins in different ways.
D. Governments have tried to contribute to the protection of pangolins.
31. What’s the author’s attitude towards pangolins’ future?
A. Positive. B. Uncaring. C. Concerned. D. Confident.

Little boys don't like reading any more and even little girls don' t enjoy it as much as they once did: this is the accepted wisdom inside the book industry –and in many British families, too. Parents and booksellers tend to blame the growing appeal of online entertainment and handheld games, but research from the US is challenging these assumptions.
Michael Norris, an American publishing expert, will release findings in the monthly Book Publishing Report which show that, despite the best intentions, it is well-meaning mothers and fathers who often stop their sons and daughters from picking up the reading habit.
Parents have too much of a role in deciding which books their child is going to read," said Norris. It is turning children off. "
The results of a number of surveys Norris has carried out with hundreds of American booksellers over the past year have provided the basis for a series of tips for parents designed to help children find enjoyment in books.
One of his tips is to make sure children talk directly to a librarian or a book seller, while parents stand well back. Parents should allow children to choose their own reading material. Even if a mother or father is just standing with the child when the bookseller asks them what they like to read, we have found that the child will give an answer they think their parent wants to hear. It will not be the same answer they would give alone, said Norris.
Norris said, “What we have found is that parents should not worry whether a title looks too young or too old for a child. If it is children’s favorite book, then let them take it.” Children, added Norris, often enjoy reading books that are easy for then let them take it.” Children, added Norris, often enjoy reading books that are easy for them to understand. “My father made me read The Hunt for Red October by Tom Clancy when I was much too young, which, I think, was totally wrong, and I have never read another Clancy since,” said Norris.
32. What did Norris think prevents children from enjoying reading?
A. Children’s interest in handheld games
B. The declining market of the book industry
C. Parents’ influence on children’s book selection
D. The growing popularity of online entertainment
33 What do we know about the new study?
A. It is meaningless
B. It mainly focuses on British families
C. It is published to improve book sales
D. It is mainly carried out by Norris
34. What should parents do to help kids get their favorite books at bookstore?
A. Introduce new books regularly
B. Discuss popular books with their children
C. Let children choose books for themselves
D. Often seek expert advice from booksellers
35. What did Norris think of his father’s act?
A. It showed parents’ worries about kids
B. It made him love reading
C. It was quite necessary
D. It was totally wrong

C 25. B 26. D 27. D

I don't like weather extremes, so when it's very hot or really cold, it is hard to get me to leave the comfort of home.

When I'm looking for excellent opportunities to photograph snowy owls and other birds without spending dozens of hours searching for them可知我在寻找拍摄雪鸮和其他鸟类的绝佳机会时,我不会花上几十个小时去寻找它们。由此判断出,them指代前文提到的snowy owls and other birds,都是鸟类,故选D。
Thus I rushed home, grabbed my camera and went right back out to get some pictures.
A. Positive. B. Uncaring. C. Concerned. D. Confident.
B 29. D 30. D 31. C
According to the wildlife trade monitoring organization Traffic, about one million pangolins were killed from 2000 through 2013, mainly for their scales, which are used in medicine.(根据野生动物贸易监测组织Traffic的数据,从2000年到2013年,约有100万只穿山甲被杀,主要是因为它们的鳞片,这种鳞片可用于药用。)
根据第二段“This shift means that Asian pangolins are becoming difficult to find but that the value of the scales makes it worth the extra cost to take pangolins from Africa to Asia secretly.(这种转变意味着,亚洲穿山甲正变得越来越难找到,但鳞片的价值使得将穿山甲从非洲秘密运到亚洲的额外成本变得值得。)”
根据第四段“In the past few years, a ban on international commercial trade in all eight species has gone into effect. It was voted by 183 governments that are parties to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES), which is in charge of cross-border trade in wild animals and their parts.(在过去的几年里,对所有八种物种的国际商业贸易的禁令已经生效。该决议由183个《濒危物种国际贸易公约》(CITES)缔约方投票通过,该公约负责野生动物及其器官的跨境贸易。)”可知,本段介绍政府已经在保护穿山甲。故选D。
【31题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“But they are now endangered. Perhaps no pangolins can be seen when our next generation grow up.(但它们现在正濒临灭绝。也许当我们的下一代长大了,就看不到穿山甲了。)”可推断,作者对于穿山甲的未来表示担忧。故选C。

33. What do we know about the new study?
A. It is meaningless
B. It mainly focuses on British families
C. It is published to improve book sales
D. It is mainly carried out by Norris
34. What should parents do to help kids get their favorite books at bookstore?
A. Introduce new books regularly
B. Discuss popular books with their children
C. Let children choose books for themselves
D. Often seek expert advice from booksellers
35. What did Norris think of his father’s act?
A. It showed parents’ worries about kids
B. It made him love reading
C. It was quite necessary
D. It was totally wrong
C 33. D 34. C 35. D

上文“Schools care about how their students perform in math and science. Because of this, teachers might not see the value of art-related museum field trips.”(学校关心的是学生在数学和科学的考试中的表现如何。 说明学校仅关心学生必要的学科学习表现,下文“He and his research team are studying how attending cultural events can help with a student's education.
下文“For this study, his team looked at 11,000 students. Students who visited an art museum were more tolerant and more empathetic. Besides, they learned a lot of content about the art they saw and developed stronger critical thinking skills about art.(在这项研究中,他的团队调查了11000名学生。参观过艺术博物馆的学生更宽容,也更有同理心。此外,他们还学到了很多关于他们所看到的艺术的内容,并发展出了更强的艺术批判性思维能力。)”讲述了这个团队的研究过程,下文“Greene's team also examined how going to a live theater performance can affect students.(格林团队还研究了去剧院观看现场演出对学生的影响。)”
下文“It found that students who saw a live performance experienced improvement in tolerance and empathy. A different group of students watched a movie version of the same play.”(研究发现,观看现场表演的学生在宽容度和同理心方面都有所改善。
上文“It found that students who saw a live performance experienced improvement in tolerance and empathy. A different group of students watched a movie version of the same play. The students who saw the live performance learned the story and related vocabulary better than those who watched the movie version.”(研究发现,观看现场表演的学生在宽容度和同理心方面都有所改善。 故选A项。
下文“Apart from their usual field trips, the museums also offer STEM-based tours.( 除了普通的艺术品参观外,博物馆还提供“STEM之旅”)”讲述博物馆提供的学习参观,E项中的“provide new programs for schools”与下文相符,因此推断E项“一些博物馆正在寻找为学校提供新项目的方法”符合语境,因此下文的解释。故选E项。

I’m really glad to hear from you and know you are getting along. I think it is common for you not to get used to the life there. Here I have some suggestions for you. First of all, you should respect local customs and involve yourself in the native’s lives. Just as a saying goes, “when in Rome, do as the Romans do”. Secondly, don’t forget to communicate with American students and make friends with them. Friendship will bring you happiness. What’s more, it is better for you to take more outdoor activities with your friends, which may help you relax and have fun. Finally, mind your own manners and remain modest and honest when getting along with your friends.
I hope you can adapt to your new life soon and enjoy your stay there.
