The Past Future Tense
A wise nation learns more from disasters and errors than from the normal course of events.
By the end of this class, I will be able to:
know how to use the past future tense;
comprehend how to retell others’ words and tell stories by using the past future tense;
know what to do when an earthquake occurs;
understand that god helps those who help themselves.
Learning objectives
Look at the pictures and read the dialogue, paying attention to the colored parts.
Mary: Hey, John, have you heard about the earth quake?
John: Oh, yes. It was terrible, wasn’t it?
Mary: Yes, it was. Many buildings fell down and hundreds of people lost their lives.
John: And the weather reporter said it would rain tomorrow in the earthquake area.
Mary: That’s really bad news.
John: Hope everything will be better.
Mary: My mother said she was going to donate some money. And my father said he was going to do volunteer work there. What can I do to help?
John: Let’s figure out what we can do to help.
Mary: I couldn’t agree with you more.

The sea drew back for a few moments. Then, a huge wave swept across the city. Boats were carried inland, and buildings and people were pulled out to sea. The shaking of the earth not only took away part of a hillside, but also brushed trains and stations into the water below. Large sections of the sea-bed sank by 400 meters; the land rose by 250 meters in some places and sank in others. Three powerful shocks ruined the cities of Tokyo and Yokohama and, during the next six hours, there were 171 aftershocks.
