We had a budget and had to reveal our character in the dishes. We also had to make sure nothing was thrown away — that was where I really had to think. M: And you got through to the second stage! W: Right! That involved cooking a dish for the judges. We prepared our dishes in the kitchen of an actual restaurant. M: Did everything go as planned? W: Not exactly! I was relieved to find no one was making dishes anything like mine. But as I was about to start cooking I realized that the pizza stone I wanted to cook my pizza on was in the back of my mom’s car, and she’d gone home! Anyway, the oven did the job just as well. However, it was tense watching the judges taste the food. Their faces completely lacked expression so I had no idea whether they liked it or not. But they loved my dish and I won! M: Congratulations! 17. Where does Richard Florida mention the importance of choosing a living place? A. In a book. B. In a program. C. In a piece of news. 18. In today’s world, some might argue that it doesn’t really matter where you live. That’s not true, according to Richard Florida. In his book Who’s Your City? Richard Florida says the decision about where to live may be the most important one you make. Richard thinks that people tend to gather in certain cities according to the work they do and even the type of personalities they have. Some cities, such as Boston, lead the way in technology and innovation. New York and London are financial centers. Cities like Los Angeles make quality films. Others like Guadalajara are known mainly for producing various products. Why are some cities centers of creativity while others are more likely to focus on producing things? Richard uses recent research to suggest that personality may play a role. Cities like Boston are home to people who are open to experience. They like high levels of activity and new ideas. Most technology companies are in or near these centers of creativity. In cities like Guadalajara, residents are both hard-working and agreeable. They tend to follow rules and work well on teams, qualities that are important in manufacturing. A At Ynez Library, we are champions of curiosity. From towering concrete pillars to sculptural modernist domes (穹顶), the work of Balkrishna Vithaldas Doshi defined Indian architecture for the latter half of the 20th century. Known as B.V. Doshi, he was a versatile (多才多艺的) modernist architect — he designed everything from accessible housing projects to the Indian Institute of Management in Bangalore. Sadly, the great architect died on January 24, 2023, at the age of 95, leaving behind a fascinating legacy. Born on August 26,1927, in Pune, southeast of Mumbai, Doshi grew up with his father and grandfather, a furniture maker. As a child, he came to appreciate how their house grew and changed. In 1947, shortly before Indian independence, he began architecture school. However, he never finished, a fact which he’d later point to in life as an advantage. He married his wife Kamala Parikh in 1955. When she passed away, Doshi lived in a house he designed and named for his beloved wife. Doshi was influenced by the famous Swiss-French architect known as Le Corbusier. Doshi studied with him in Paris and then returned to India to supervise the architect’s work in Ahmedabad. In 1956, Doshi founded his own firm called Vastushilpa. He traveled the world lecturing at universities, worked with other famous architects, and even founded the Center for Environmental Planning and Technology (now CEPT University) focusing on understanding, designing, planning, constructing and managing human habitats. “We did not want to imitate someone else’s approach,” he told the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in 2018. “We wanted to find our own identity.” He drew from his pride in Indian culture to create a style distinct from Western designs. “I think of my buildings as my friends, my family,” he said. “I have a conversation with them, and that’s how I create niches and staircases and openings and gardens…my buildings are not only pure and clear but designed to anticipate changes.” Aside from his modern works, Doshi was devoted to creating works to benefit the poor. He designed the Aranya Low Cost Housing Project in Indore. The photographer Iwan Baan, who photographed some of Doshi’s works, described the artist as “the most approachable architect I know. Even very poor people in his public housing projects knew him, which is exceptional”. 24. What do we know about Doshi’s life? A. He had a miserable childhood. B. He regretted leaving school early. C. He made a contribution to higher education in architecture. D. He set up his company under the guidance of Le Corbusier. 25. What does the author want to illustrate by quoting Doshi’s words? A. The public support for Doshi. B. The originality of Doshi’s works. C. Doshi’s open mind on changes. D. Doshi’s love of architectural design. 26. Which of the following can best describe Doshi? A. Dedicated and accessible. B. Modest and generous. C. Ambitious and demanding. D. Well-rounded and conservative. 27. What is the purpose of the text? A. To give a brief account of Doshi’s life. B. To encourage people to visit Doshi’s works. C. To remember India’s great architect Doshi. D. To advertise Doshi’s architectural philosophy. C 25. B 26. A 27. 根据第三段最后一句“He traveled the world lecturing at universities, worked with other famous architects, and even founded the Center for Environmental Planning and Technology (now CEPT University) focusing on understanding, designing, planning, constructing and managing human habitats. (他周游世界,在大学里讲学,与许多著名建筑师合作,甚至创办了环境规划与技术中心(现为CEPT大学),专注于理解、设计、规划、建造和管理人类居住环境)”可知,他环球游学传道建筑学知识,创办了CEPT大学的前身。由此可知,他对高等建筑教育做出了贡献。故选C项。 【25题详解】 推理判断题 。根据第四段前两句““We did not want to imitate someone else’s approach,” he told the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in 2018. “We wanted to find our own identity.” He drew from his pride in Indian culture to create a style distinct from Western designs. (“我们不想模仿别人的方法,”他在2018年向路易斯安那现代艺术博物馆表示,“我们想找到自己的身份。”他从对印度文化的自豪中汲取灵感,创造出一种与西方设计截然不同的风格)”可推知,他在言辞中强调了其建筑的独创性,他不去追随和模仿别人,而是追寻原创,作者引用Doshi的话是为了说明他的作品具有原创性。故选B项。 【26题详解】 细节理解题。根据最后一段的内容“Aside from his modern works, Doshi was devoted to creating works to benefit the poor. He designed the Aranya Low Cost Housing Project in Indore. The photographer Iwan Baan, who photographed some of Doshi’s works, described the artist as “the most approachable architect I know. Even very poor people in his public housing projects knew him, which is exceptional”.(除了他的现代作品之外,多西还致力于创造惠及贫困人群的作品。 故选A项。 C The ten-car subway train was adorned at the end of June in a tunnel in Queens. The artists appeared to use paint rollers to cover it along one side, from top to bottom, in an awful shade of pink with a brown line. Tagging (涂鸦) a train is often less about the art and more about the prize of marking something that involves risk and echoes the original graffiti writers, who blanketed subway trains, including the windows and seats inside, in the 1970s and 1980s. “Modern graffiti began in Philadelphia in the 1960s. But it became an art form in New York City,” says Eric Felisbret, author of “Graffiti New York”. “Graffiti benefited from the popularity of hip-hop globally,” says Mr Felisbret. “Out of all the elements of hip-hop, graffiti is by far the most rebellious...Back then, all graffiti was illegal.” In 2020 the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), which runs the subway, spent $1.2m on cleaning. By the end of May 2022 it had already spent $1.1m. In all of 2021, 681 subway cars were “ruined”. This year more than 700 cars have been. More than one in ten subway cars had to be taken out of service for cleaning. The recent spike in subway graffiti activity parallels the lifting of travel restrictions. The graffiti on trains usually gets cleaned or hidden quickly, so artists post images of their work on social media. Sharif Profit, who organises the annual Graffiti Hall of Fame in Harlem, says he can always tell when the work is by someone from another country: “It is not on the same level.” Tagging on the subway is dangerous. The live third rail is lethal (致命的) and he tunnels are dark. Trains can appear with little warning, so trespassers (不法进入者) may have no way of avoiding them. Two French graffiti artists were killed by a train in Brooklyn in April. “As soon as I heard where the bodies were found, I knew they were taggers,” says Mr Felisbret. The MTA removes any tagged train so as to avoid encouraging other people. Passengers then have to wait longer. That was the case recently, says Richard Davey, head of the MTA’s New York City Transit system, when eight trains were ruined. The resulting delays affected thousands of commuters. “It’s our goal to make sure we don’t return to the 1970s,” he says, “whether it’s in our stations or on our cars.” Graffiti on the subway began to die out in the late 1980s. One former graffiti writer said it is almost shocking to see tagging there now. 28. Why do graffiti artists tag a subway train? A. For the prize of art competition. B. To imitate the early graffiti creators. C. To express their dissatisfaction with society. D. In pursuit of artistic beauty. 29. What does the underlined word “spike” mean in Paragraph 5? A. pause B. drop C. participation D. increase 30. Why is Mr Felisbret cited in Paragraph 6? A. To demonstrate the risk of tagging underground. B. To emphasize the devotion of tagging artists. C. To give an introduction of New York tunnels. D. To show his sorry for the loss of tagging artists. 31. What do we learn about tagging from the text? A. It helps people better understand the world. B. Modern graffiti was at its peak in the 1970s. C. It has brought inconvenience to commuters. D. It is embraced by a majority of artists now. B 29. D 30. A 31. 根据文章第二段“Tagging (涂鸦) a train is often less about the art and more about the prize of marking something that involves risk and echoes the original graffiti writers, who blanketed subway trains, including the windows and seats inside, in the 1970s and 1980s.(在火车上做涂鸦,往往与艺术无关,更多的是为了给一些带有风险的东西做标记,这与最初的涂鸦作家的做法相呼应。上世纪七八十年代,涂鸦作家在地铁列车上涂满了涂鸦,包括车窗和座位。)”可知,艺术家在火车上涂鸦是为了模仿早期的涂鸦创作者。故选B。 【29题详解】 词句猜测题。根据划线词上一段“In 2020 the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), which runs the subway, spent $1.2m on cleaning. By the end of May 2022 it had already spent $1.1m. In all of 2021, 681 subway cars were “ruined”. This year more than 700 cars have been. More than one in ten subway cars had to be taken out of service for cleaning.(2020年,管理地铁的大都会交通管理局(MTA)在清洁上花费了120万美元。到2022年5月底,它已经花费了110万美元。2021年全年,有681辆地铁车厢被“毁”。今年已经有700多节车厢。超过十分之一的地铁车厢因清洁而停运)”及划线词下文“parallels the lifting of travel restrictions.(同时取消旅行限制)”可知,从上文的清洁量及涂鸦导致的停运后果来看,最近地铁涂鸦数量不断激增,划线词spike与increase意思相近。故选D。 【30题详解】 推理判断题。根据文章第六段“Tagging on the subway is dangerous.(在地铁上涂鸦很危险)”及引用Mr Felisbret的话“As soon as I heard where the bodies were found, I knew they were taggers(我一听说尸体是在哪里被发现的,就知道他们是涂鸦者)”可知,引用Mr Felisbret的话是为了进一步证明在地铁涂鸦的危险性。故选A。 根据文章倒数第二段“Passengers then have to wait longer. That was the case recently, says Richard Davey, head of the MTA’s New York City Transit system, when eight trains were ruined. The resulting delays affected thousands of commuters.(然后乘客不得不等待更长的时间。MTA纽约市运输系统负责人理查德•戴维说,最近的情况就是这样,当时有八列列车被毁。由此造成的延误影响了数千名通勤者)”可知,被涂鸦的地铁被MTA禁用,导致地铁总数减少,给乘坐者带来了不便。故选C。 D Researchers from ETH Zurich, the University of Zurich, and the University Hospital Zurich have made a significant breakthrough in the field of precision medicine. They have developed a machine learning approach known as CellOT that can predict how individual cells react to specific treatments. This development promises more accurate diagnoses and therapeutics, particularly in the fight against cancer. Precision medicine, which aims to find the most effective drug combination and dosage (剂量) based on individual patient characteristics, has been a critical goal in the battle against cancer. Central to this is understanding how individual cells respond to treatment, a challenge that the research team from Zurich has tackled head-on with their innovative method. CellOT is a groundbreaking approach that identifies the distinct reactions individual cells within a larger population can have to a drug. The average response of a cell population often does not capture the full complexity of how certain tumor cells survive or develop resistance to drugs. CellOT addresses this by predicting the effects of perturbations (扰动) on cells, paving the way for more effective and personalized cancer treatments. Perturbations are changes caused by chemical, physical, or genetic influences, such as the effects of drugs on cancer cells. By understanding which cells respond to a drug and identifying the traits of resistant cells, researchers can develop new treatment strategies that prevent cell growth or cause pathogenic (致病的) cells to die. For CellOT, the researchers use novel machine learning algorithms and train these with both data from unperturbed cells and data from cells that changed after a perturbation response. In the process, the algorithm learns how cellular perturbation reactions arise, how they progress, and the likely phenotypes (显性类型) of altered cell states. The study, published in Nature Methods, shows that CellOT is not just effective for cancer cells. It can also be used on other pathogenic cells involved in autoimmune diseases like lupus erythematosus (红斑狼疮), indicating its potential in advancing treatments for various diseases. A key innovation of CellOT is its predictive ability. By evaluating existing cell measurement data, and thus expanding the knowledge of cellular perturbation reactions, CellOT can predict how individual cells will respond to perturbations that have not been measured in the laboratory. This capability opens up new avenues for targeted and personalized treatments. While CellOT holds immense promise, comprehensive clinical trials are still required before the approach can be used in a hospital setting. Nevertheless, the development of this method marks a significant step towards a more nuanced (细腻的) understanding of individual cell responses to drugs. It fuels the hope for more effective cancer treatments and advances in precision medicine. 32. The underlined word “this” in Paragraph 3 refers to ________. A. the resistance from a group of cancer cells to drugs B. the average reaction of a cell population to drugs C. various responses of a cell population to drugs D. the survival of a population of cancer cells to drugs 33. According to the text, CellOT ________. A. focuses on monitoring the development of cancer cells B. can cause perturbations inside a human body C. has proved efficient in some Zurich hospitals D. may bring about better treatments for various diseases 34. What is the last paragraph mainly about? A. Suggestions for CellOT improvement. B. The limitations of CellOT. C. Future implications of CellOT. D. An explanation of further research. 35. What would be the best title for the text? A. How Machine Learning Helps Zurich Doctors B. CellOT: Advancing Precision Cancer Treatment C. A Groundbreaking Medicine for Cancer D. Precision Medicine is Around the Corner 【答案】32. C 33. D 34. C 35. 根据第三段“The average response of a cell population often does not capture the full complexity of how certain tumor cells survive or develop resistance to drugs.(细胞群体的平均反应往往无法捕捉某些肿瘤细胞如何存活或对药物产生抗性的全部复杂性)”可知,这里的“this”指的是细胞群体对药物的各种反应,而不仅仅是平均反应。C项“various responses of a cell population to drugs(细胞群体对药物的各种反应)”表达的含义符合语境,故选C项。 根据第六段“The study, published in Nature Methods, shows that CellOT is not just effective for cancer cells. It can also be used on other pathogenic cells involved in autoimmune diseases like lupus erythematosus (红斑狼疮), indicating its potential in advancing treatments for various diseases(这项发表于《自然方法》杂志的研究显示,CellOT不仅对癌细胞有效,还可以用于治疗其他参与自身免疫性疾病的致病细胞,如红斑狼疮,这表明它在推进各种疾病治疗方面具有潜力)”,可知,CellOT不仅对癌细胞有效,还可以用于治疗如红斑狼疮等其他参与自身免疫性疾病的致病细胞,可以推断出CellOT可能带来更好的多种疾病治疗方法。 根据最后一段“While CellOT holds immense promise, comprehensive clinical trials are still required before the approach can be used in a hospital setting. Nevertheless, the development of this method marks a significant step towards a more nuanced (细腻的) understanding of individual cell responses to drugs. It fuels the hope for more effective cancer treatments and advances in precision medicine(尽管CellOT具有巨大的前景,但在医院环境中应用此方法之前,仍需进行全面的临床试验。 根据第一段“Researchers from ETH Zurich, the University of Zurich, and the University Hospital Zurich have made a significant breakthrough in the field of precision medicine. They have developed a machine learning approach known as CellOT that can predict how individual cells react to specific treatments. This development promises more accurate diagnoses and therapeutics, particularly in the fight against cancer(苏黎世联邦理工学院、苏黎世大学和苏黎世大学医院的研究人员在精准医疗领域取得了重大突破。他们开发了一种名为CellOT的机器学习方法,能够预测单个细胞对特定治疗的反应。这一进展有望带来更准确的诊断和治疗,特别是在抗癌斗争中)”以及最后一段“While CellOT holds immense promise, comprehensive clinical trials are still required before the approach can be used in a hospital setting. Nevertheless, the development of this method marks a significant step towards a more nuanced (细腻的) understanding of individual cell responses to drugs. It fuels the hope for more effective cancer treatments and advances in precision medicine(尽管CellOT具有巨大的前景,但在医院环境中应用此方法之前,仍需进行全面的临床试验。 An old study in the advertising literature found that we’re more likely to read advertisements for the products we have bought, even if they have proved to be “lemons”, or useless. This phenomenon also applies to our decision-making process. Humans sometimes make bad choices and stick with them despite negative consequences. ____36____ But in general bad choices have to do with acting out of emotion and not out of reason. Strong emotions can cloud our thinking and lead us down one rabbit hole after another. Doubling down on a bad choice may also relate to our self-esteem and the ability to admit mistakes. Narcissists(自恋者) usually won’t admit a mistake because it contradicts their self-image. But the fact is that many of us aren’t narcissistic. ____37____ Even when trapped in a bad relationship, we may still stick with it, hoping things will eventually change for the better. Resilience involves managing strong emotions and preventing them from fully dictating our decisions. Considering emotion is important, enthusiasm for something can move us forward, but it can also block our vision. ____38____ While relying solely on our “gut feeling” can be helpful, it works best when we use our head, integrating intuitive insights with logical thinking. Doubling down is generally unwise. We need to acknowledge our errors and be willing to say we’re sorry and apologize. ____39____ In fact, it’s smarter than denying mistakes. By admitting them, we learn valuable lessons and promote personal growth. Recognizing when to cut our losses is crucial, allowing us to pursue new opportunities with confidence. ____40____ A. And we often struggle with this. B. The reasons for that are complex. C. Make our decisions with full passion. D. There is nothing wrong with doing this. E. So stop trying to make lemonade from bad lemons. F. The more errors you make, the more you will learn. G. We should consider what’s right, not just what feels right. 36. B 37. A 38. G 39. D 40. As a girl of shy and reserved nature, I had to take a fresh start to fit into the sophisticated city life. One sunny day, my school announced an exciting event, a talent show for the local food bank. Students were encouraged to showcase their unique talents in front of the public in the city hall on National Day. A buzz of excitement fed the school as everyone began preparing for the big day. Deep down, I felt a spark of curiosity and a desire to participate. However, my self-doubt held me back, “I don’t have any special skills to share.” Days turned into weeks, and the talent show drew closer. I couldn’t shake the upsetting feeling until one day, Emma, one of the most popular girls in my class, came to me while I was helping in the grocery store after class. “How about singing together in the talent show?” She grinned, “I heard you singing a tune, along the way back home. I can’t help following you here.” Gosh, I couldn’t believe my ears. Emma, with personality and popularity, acknowledged my little talent. Since Emma had the world’s prettiest voice, I felt like being favoured by fortune. “You two? The talent show for the food bank?” My mum bent towards us and her face lit up. “A big occasion.” Then a light bulb seemed to go in her head. “Why not practise right now upstairs? I bet you’ll be a perfect match.” Winking at us, she seemed to know we were thinking alike. Emma and I embarked on rehearsing almost every single day after school. We brainstormed, exchanged ideas and rehearsed the scene. As the days rolled by, I was feeling pretty good about our act. But the day before the performance, Emma called that she had an acute stomachache and was not in any shape to perform. Paragraph 1: I was completely knocked out by the news. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2: Finally came the big moment. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】I was completely knocked out by the news. What should I do? Having prepared for such a long time, I didn’t think of that coming up. Feeling at a loss, I was brainstorming as hard as I could to think of a solution, when a gentle touch on my back brought me back to reality. It was my mum, who looked at me with care and concern. “You have prepared for it enough. You can do it by yourself.” She said after my stumbled explanation. I looked back at her eyes, and a sense of confidence and warmness swelled up in my heart. Yes, I could do it myself. Finally came the big moment. Looking around the audience, I stepped onto the stage, with butterflies in my stomach. My voice trembled at first, but with the melodies flew around, the nervousness was gone with the wind. Emotions filled in my song, I performed as naturally as I spoke every day. I saw my mum, who was looking at me with reassurance and care. It turned out to be a good performance, which helped me conquer my fears and turned me into a new person. 词汇激活 行为类 ① 表演:perform/make a performance/show one’s talents ② 做准备:prepare for/make preparations for ③ 参加:participate in/join in/take part in/be involved in ④ 笑:grin/smile/laugh/giggle/chuckle 情绪类 ① 害羞内向的:shy/reserved/introverted ② 好奇的:curious/be full of curiosity ③ 开心的:delighted/overjoyed/content ④ 担忧的:concerned/worried/butterflies in one’s stomach 【点睛】[高分句型1] Having prepared for such a long time, I didn’t think of that coming up.(运用了现在分词作时间状语) [高分句型2] Emotions filled in my song, I performed as naturally as I spoke every day.(运用了独立主格结构) [高分句型3] I saw my mum, who was looking at me with reassurance and care.(运用了who引导的定语从句) 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$ 2024—2025学年第一学期长乐一中阶段二考试 高中三年英语科试卷 考试日期: 12 月 18日 完卷时间: 120分钟 满分: 150分 第I卷(共95分) 第一部分:听力(共两节,满分30分) 第一节 (共 5 小题;每小题 1.5 分,满分 7.5 分) 听下面 5 段对话。 What could the woman see from the room? B Visionary architects design buildings which speak for themselves. C He made a contribution to higher education in architecture. C The ten-car subway train was adorned at the end of June in a tunnel in Queens. D Researchers from ETH Zurich, the University of Zurich, and the University Hospital Zurich have made a significant breakthrough in the field of precision medicine. I missed a few school days because of illness. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$
