After the First World War, a small group of soldiers left the army and returned to their village in France. Most of them did very well, but one of them was poor. His name was Francois Labia.
Once every year, they held a reunion (团圆) party in Grinding’s house. Grinding was a rich man. At one party, Grinding showed his friends a large gold coin. The coin was passed around and praised by everyone there. At the same time they were talking and laughing. They soon forgot about the coin. After supper Grinding asked for the coin, but nobody knew where it was. It was lost. Finally, one of them said that everyone must be searched. One by one they turned out their pockets. Only Labia refused.
“I didn’t steal the coin, and I will not be searched,” he said.
Grinding got angry and left the room. From that day, villagers turned their heads from Labia when they met him. He got poorer and poorer.
A few years later, Grinding had his house repaired. A workman found the coin under the floor. Grinding felt sorry and went to Labia to apologize.
“But,” he asked, “You knew the coin was not in your pockets. Why did you refuse to be searched?”
“Because my pockets were full of food,” Labia answered. “For weeks, my family and I had not had enough to eat. I took some food from the table to take home for my wife and children.”

The Wai Wai is e a tribe (部落) of about 250 people who live in the Amazon jungle (亚马逊丛林). This tribe has had little contact with the modern world. In fact, their nearest neighbors, another tribe of native people, live so far away that it takes three weeks to travel between the villages on foot. One of the few Western people to have visited the Wai Wai is Blashford-Snell. In March 2002, he spent two months visiting the tribe and offering them some help.
On the last day of his visit, the village priest (牧师) asked Blashford-Snell a favor. He wanted a grand piano to put in the village church.
"Do you have any idea what a grand piano looks like?" asked Blashford-Snell.
The priest said he had seen pictures of one in a book. Blashford-Snell didn't think he'd ever be able to play the piano but the priest said, "We are musical people." Then he said, "God (上帝) moves in mysterious ways."
Back in England, Blashford-Snell was offered a 360-kilogram grand piano as a gift from the Millennium Gloucester Hotel London. Blashford-Snell and his team flew the piano as far as they could into the jungle by helicopter. But getting the piano from the landing site to the village was no easy job. With the help of a few people from the tribe, they put the piano in a sledge(雪橇)and pulled the sledge by ropes several miles through the jungle to a river. Then they loaded the piano into a boat and started up the river. Finally, they arrived at the foot of the mountain where the tribe lives. With help from more tribe members, they were able to climb to the top of the mountain carrying the piano. The piano had arrived at its new home in the Amazon!
Six months later, Blashford-Snell traveled back to visit the tribe. He helped the Wai Wai record a CD to raise money for the tribe. The CD included a variety of songs and music of the Wai Wai, and the Beatles classic "With a Little Help from My Friends" played by the Wai Wai with the piano!

This letter was sent to a newspaper in Germany
13 October
Dear editor,
I am writing to ask what has happened to our youth. They are not as polite, hard-working or clever as my generation(一代人). I will give you two examples.
Last Friday, I got on the underground at 9.15a.m. It was very busy so there were no free seats. There were some teenagers sitting on the seats nearest me. I don’t know why they were not at school. They were talking loudly and laughing. It was difficult to read my newspaper with all the noise. A heavily pregnant(怀孕的) woman and her daughter got on at the next stop, with lots of shopping bags. I expected the teenagers to let them sit down. They saw the woman but did nothing. I had to ask them to give her a seat. They reluctantly(勉强地)did so but give me a rude look. I got off at the next stop and was glad that the teenagers didn’t follow me.
Last Saturday, I had dinner with my friend’s family. I was looking forward to meeting his children, who I hadn’t seen for ten years. During dinner, we started talking world politics. It soon became clear that they didn’t know much. They couldn’t tell me the name or the King of Spain or the President of Italy. All they knew about was the internet and which singers were the most beautiful. In my day, students knew the kings, queens and presidents of every country in Europe.
I worry about the future of Germany. How could these young people become responsible workers and parents? They sit around Macdonald’s after instead of going the library like I did at their age. Maybe they have too much money. Perhaps another reader can give us an idea about what to do with this ‘lost generation’.

The Outline of the Story of “The Night of the Horse”
In the story of “The Night of the Horse”, the Greeks had been fighting against the Trojans for ten years. Unable to win by force, they came up with a clever trick. They built a huge wooden horse and left it outside the city of Troy, pretending to sail away. The Trojans, thinking they had won, brought the horse into the city. However, at night, Greek soldiers hidden inside the horse climbed out. They opened the city gates for the rest of the Greek army which had secretly returned. As a result, Troy was captured.
From this story, we learn that we should not be easily deceived by appearances. We need to think critically and be cautious in making decisions.
