But I think the best one to lose weight is rowing because it exercises your body from head to foot. Remember to go there at least once a week. If you go there twice this week then stop for a month it will be helpless. Diet is also an important part of losing weight. Some people say exercise is as important as diet. But I would say what you eat is more important. Also you will lose weight more quickly if you drink less sugary drinks and beer. Drinking coffee one hour before exercising can help your body burn energy. Make sure to drink lots of water during an after exercise. Listen to fast music not your favorite songs or music you can sing along to because these will prevent you from focusing on the activity.

Around the world, there are lots of names for towns and villages that sound funny in English for example, Monster in the Netherlands, Egg in Austria and Silly in Belgium. Here are a few of my favorites.
In around 1751, George Deakins was offered some land in the US: by King George II of England as payment for a debt. “You can choose a piece of land anywhere in Western Maryland,” the king said. Mr. Deakins sent two teams of engineers to find the best land, without actually working together. The two teams came back with their maps and to their surprise, they discovered they had chosen exactly the same piece of land. Mr. Deakins called it, “The Accident Tract”, and that’s how the town got its name. And guess what a person from Accident is called: an Accidental!
In Mississippi, in the late 1800s, you had to travel a long way to take your crops to market and to buy food and provisions (供给品). When Levi Davis built a store halfway between Natchez and Mobile, it provided a welcome break. He always offered tired travelers a good pot of hot coffee which he advertised as “the best coffee around”. Soon his store became well known as a place to stop for hot coffee and the surrounding area became known as Hot Coffee, too. Today, you can still see the road signs to Hot Coffee, but maybe it’s not really “the best coffee around” anymore.
The Turkish city Batman takes its name from a river and not from the comic book superhero. The river’s name was inspired by the Bati Raman Mountain. However, there is still a connection with the Batman we’ve seen on the screen. In 2008, the mayor of Batman said that Christopher Nolan, the director of The Dark Knight, should have to pay money to the city for using the name Batman without permission. “There is only one Batman in the world”, he said. It’s true that filmmakers can’t steal information and ideas, but the name Batman has been around since the character was created in 1939.
16. What is correct about town Accident?
A. It was offered by King George III of England.
B. It was found by two teams working together.
C. A person from Accident is called: an Accidental!
D. The town’s name was given by a King.
17. What can you know from the passage about Hot Coffee?
A. It is a store between Natchez and Maryland.
B. You cannot see the road signs to Hot Coffee today.
C. The store was built by Levi Davis not to welcome tired travelers.
D. It may not serve the best coffee around now anymore.
18. How did the city of Batman probably get its name?
A. Batman takes its name from a comic book. B. The city’s name was inspired by a superhero.
C. It is given by Christopher Nolan. D. It has something to do with the Bati Raman Mountain.

Everybody enjoys acts of kindness. But can you explain why? Some people think kindness is something out of love and care, while others believe it is just a tool that we use to become more popular. But research shows that being kind can activate (激活)an area of the brain called Striatum. Research also shows that kindness improves people’s mood (情绪). But why and how does it happen? Here are a number of different ways.
Being kind can make someone smile. If you see yourself smile in a situation, people around may be smiling, too. This is especially true for your close friends and family. A kind act makes someone who is sad feel better. It can also make ourselves feel good. So why not set off that chain (链条)of good feelings to people around?
Secondly, being kind starts or develops a social connection (社会联系) with others. Kind acts like buying someone a present make friendships stronger. Research has shown that spending money on others may help you get a stronger feeling of happiness than spending it on yourself. Similarly, charities (慈善)also open up new circles of people to connect with someone on the other side of the world.
In another recent research, even children in their first year of secondary school know how being kind makes them feel happy. If one person is kind, he or she makes others in the group kind. It also lifts everyone’s spirits. Imagine that you make cakes for the office and it makes others do it each month. Then you’re getting cakes a lot more days than providing them.
The story doesn’t end here. Being kind may improve your mood, but research has also shown that if you’re in a good mood, you can act much more kindly. This makes it a wonderful two-way relationship, doesn’t it?
19. How does the writer lead in the topic?
A. by telling a story B. by asking questions
C. by giving examples D. by making a survey

One morning, I stepped out of bed and put my feet on the floor. Suddenly, a mean little man jumped out from under the bed and stabbed (刺,扎) an ice pick (碎冰锥) through my left foot.
Figuratively (比喻地) speaking, yes.
I took another step and he stabbed it again. This went on all day. Step, stab, scream. Over the next few days, I started limping (跛行). My whole body hurt. Even my hair. I kept thinking that the little man would get tired of stabbing me and go pick on somebody else. We often take things for granted (认为理所当然) until we lose them or they start to hurt.
My brother deals with pain every day. He’s also blind and suffers from cerebral palsy (脑瘫), needs a walker to walk, doesn’t take much for granted. I had to wonder: What would he think about my foot?
Finally, after a week of pain, I went to see a very nice foot doctor. The doctor studied my foot, took X-rays, shook his head, and said the little man’s name: Arthur Itis, or Arthritis (关节炎).
I knew it well. I’d often heard it hissed angrily by my grandparents and parents, all attacked by Arthur’s ice pick when they got older.
“Wait,” I said. “Doesn’t Arthur usually just pick on old people?”
The doctor smiled, looking at my chart. “How old are you?”
I gave him a look. “Never mind,” I said. “Can you fix it?”
“Well,” he said, “we can try.”
He listed several options and I chose the injection (打针). It didn’t hurt much. Not half as much as the ice pick.
That was yesterday. This morning, I awoke, took a few careful steps and … hallelujah! It hurt just a bit, but no ice pick. I looked under the bed. No sign of Arthur. Maybe he was hiding in the closet, waiting for another day. But for now, he was gone, and I was grateful. My mind began to race with plans to do all the things I’d been putting off for days: unpack, clean the house, wash my hair …
Then it hit me. Another stab. Not in my foot. In my heart. I remembered that I hadn’t called my brother in a long time.
It’s easy to take some things for granted. But it should never be the people we love.
23. Why didn’t the author go to see the doctor for the first week?
A. Because she was afraid that her brother would laugh at her.
B. Because she thought it was too cold to step out of her room.
C. Because she expected that the pain would gradually disappear.
D. Because she believed that she could endure the pain like her brother did.
24. Who had a disease that was different from the other people mentioned?
A. The author. B. The author’s brother. C. The author’s parents. D. The author’s grandparents.
25. After having the injection, the author’s ________.
A. felt regretful because it hurt so much
B. was first satisfied with her recovery
C. felt better but could still feel the “ice pick” pain
D. was busy with housework that had been delayed for days
26. From her experience of arthritis, the author learned that ________.
A. stabbing pain in the heart is as painful as one in the foot
B. people who help us relieve pain should be thanked properly
C. we should always remember to show our love to those we love
D. we should never take for granted the pain we experience in life
【答案】23. C 24. B 25. B 26. C

Etymology (语源), the study of words and word roots, may sound like the kind of thing done by boring librarians in small rooms. Yet etymologists actually have an interesting job. They are in many ways just like archaeologists (考古学家) digging up the history of people and events. The special aspect of etymology is that it digs up history, so to speak, through the words and phrases that are left behind.
The English language is a great field to explore history through words. As a language, English has a number of words. In some way, this is because it has its ability to adapt (适应) foreign words so easily. For example, “English” words such as kindergarten (from German), croissant (from French), and cheetah (from Hindi) have become part of the language with little or no change from their original (最初的) sounds and spellings. So English-language etymologists have a large world of words to explore.
Another enjoyable thing about etymology for most word experts is solving word mysteries (谜). No, etymologists do not go around solving murders (谋杀), like the great detective (侦探) Sherlock Holmes. What these word experts solve are mysterious origins of some of our most common words.
One of the biggest questions English language experts have pursued is how English came to have the phrase OK. Though it is one of the most commonly used expressions, its exact beginning is a puzzle even to this day. Even its spelling is not completely consistent(吻合的)—unless you spell it Okay, it is hard even to call it a word.
Etymologists have been able to narrow OK’s origin down to a likely, although not certain, source (来源). It became widely used around the time of Martin Van Buren’s run for president in 1840. His nickname (昵称) was Old Kinderhook. What troubles word experts about this explanation is that the phrase appeared in some newspapers before Van Buren became well known. It is likely that Van Buren could be called its primary source. Etymologists will doubtlessly keep searching for the original source. However, it is clear that OK’s popularity and reputation (名声) have topped those of the American president to whom it has been most clearly connected with.
27. The author mentions the words like “croissant” in Paragraph 2 to show _________.
A. words have changed a lot in the two languages
B. what English-language etymologists are exploring now
C. English has absorbed (吸收) many words from other foreign languages
D. the English vocabulary is difficult to the non-English-speaking people
28. The underlined word “pursued” in Paragraph 4 means _________.
A. looked upon B. dug up C. put in D. set down
29. We can learn from the passage that etymologists _________.
A. discover the possible origin of words
B. help detectives to solve mysterious murders
C. write interesting stories for some newspapers
D. explore the English language as well as the recent events
30. What most probably is the purpose of the passage?
A. To present the history of English words.
B. To explain what an etymologist does for his job.
C. To introduce the pleasure of the study of words and word roots.
D. To teach readers how to tell English words from non-English words.

Li Ping
【答案】Possible version:
Hi Sam,
Knowing that you will have dinner with us, I feel so excited. I’m sure we’ll have a good time.
On New Year’s Eve, celebrations begin with the reunion dinner. In the north the traditional main food is dumplings shaped like a crescent moon. In the south Niangao is also pretty popular. After dinner, we usually set off fireworks, chat and watch the Spring Festival Gala. Then children are given lucky money from adults as a lunar New Year gift.
As for the table manners, you are not supposed to point at anyone with your chopsticks. Also, it’s impolite to stick your chopsticks into the food. Another thing is that you shouldn’t use your chopsticks to hit the bowl. Hope this will help you.

In Mississippi in the late 1800s, you had to travel a long way to take your crops to market and to buy food and provisions (供给品).
B
20. The underlined word “It” in Paragraph 2 refers to “________”.
A. the situation B. the family C. the kind act D. that chain
21. Which of the following best shows the structure of the passage?
A B.
C. D.
22. If you were an editor (编辑), you’d put the above passage in “________” of a newspaper.
A. Science B. Sports C. Invention D. Culture
C
D. we should never take for granted the pain we experience in life
D
Etymologists have been able to narrow OK’s origin down to a likely although not certain, source (来源).
