Blue whales are the largest animals on Earth. Do you know that blue whales weigh as much as 33 elephants? It means they can weigh 200 tons (吨) and be about 100 feet long.
They can live as long as men. Unlike other types of whales that live in groups, blue whales usually live alone or in pairs. They make different kinds of sounds underwater, by which scientists believe they talk with one another. Scientists also believe some of these sounds act like sonar (声纳), which helps blue whales know where they are and map their ocean environment.
In the past, there were lots of blue whales swimming in all the major oceans of the world. However, blues whales almost disappeared during the early 20th century. Men kill blue whales for their whale oil. In 1966, a law (法律) put an end to blue whale killing. But some countries still go on killing them.
Blue whales also face other threats (威胁) from men. Ships sometimes hit whales, and they make sea noise. The noise makes it hard for whales to talk with each other. Sea pollution and fishing are other risks (风险) that blue whales are facing. For example, fishing knots sometimes catch them.
Blue whales are in danger of disappearing forever. Only 10,000 to 25,000 blue whales can live in the world’s oceans. It is important to protect blue wholes because they play an important role in the marine food chain (海洋食物链).

Standing at the foot of the big mountains, I know that real adventure (冒险) often starts with beautiful things in the nature (自然). Everyone has their own favorite place, and I also want to find mine.
Last month I went to a beautiful mountain with great expectation. Along the way, I was so excited that I couldn’t wait to watch the fantastic view (风景). However, when I arrived there, I found there were so many people and the noisy sounds made me very sad. I expected to feel the beauty of nature in a quiet place, but now it was much too noisy.
But I didn’t give up and went on climbing the mountain. As I walked on, there were fewer people and the view became more and more beautiful. When I reached another place called Mount Greenview, I saw a place full of green plants and colorful flowers. The sense of peace was growing up from the bottom of my heart at that moment. Then I started climbing. I couldn’t wait to see more. The view from the top made me feel like I was in Alice’s Wonderland.
After enjoying the view for a while, I decided to go on my journey and headed for a quiet lake. Along the way, I was so happy that I even sang a song. The water there was so clear that I could even see the beautiful stones in the lake. Ducks swam slowly and quietly. I rested on the grass and enjoyed the nice moment.
This trip shows me that we can find beautiful things in places we don’t think of. Sometimes, looking for a great place is as good as getting to that place. So stop waiting and get moving to enjoy the beautiful view as soon as possible.

30. Which shows the changes of the writer’s feelings best in the passage?
A. B. C. D.
31. What can we learn from the writer’s trip?
A. Mountains are always the best place to find beautiful things.
B. Singing songs can make the journey more enjoyable.
C. People can find beautiful things in unexpected places.
D. Getting to a great place is more important than looking for it.

The UNESCO (联合国教科文组织) added “Spring Festival” to the World Intangible Cultural Heritage (世界非物质文化遗产) on December 4, 2024. The Spring Festival is one of the most important festivals both in China and around the world.
What do you usually do on this festival? Clean up the rooms, hand red lanterns (灯笼) or watch Spring Festival Gala (春晚)? All of them are traditions during the Spring Festival. But there is another key part to the celebrations: putting up the red Spring Festival couplets!
Couplets, also named duilian, are a special form of literature (文学) in China. They came from taofu in Zhou Dynasty and people put up couplets on the door to keep away from evil spirits (辟邪). Every Spring Festival, whether (无论) in cities or villages, rich or poor, every family will carefully choose a pair of red couplets and put it up.
Here are a few rules for the couplets. They have two lines. The first line is on the right, and the second line is on the left. Each line must have the same number of words. The second line is similar to the first line in both grammar and artistic conception (意象). Finally, a short phrase called crossing (横批) is also needed to make up the couplets. The words on the couplets are always simple but meaningful, which shows people’s good wishes.
Nowadays, more and more foreigners begin to celebrate the Spring Festival. Let’s take a look at two English couplets with Chinese characteristics (特色).
32. What Spring Festival tradition is NOT mentioned (提及) in the passage?
A. Handing red lanterns. B. Buying new clothes.
C. Watching Spring Festival Gala. D. Putting up the couplets.
33. According to the passage, which is the best for ▲ in the second couplet?
A. Great Hope for the Future B. Good Luck for the Road to Go
C. Wish You a Rich and Lucky Year D. Summer Flowers in the Garden to Grow
34. What can we infer from the passage?
A. People in Zhou Dynasty put up couplets to keep away from evil spirits.
B. Only rich men in cities will choose and put up couplets.
C. A trader with kids will probably choose the first couplet.
D. The words on the couplets will come true the next year.
35. What is the best title for this passage?
A. Making the Old New
B. Wonderful Chinese Spring Festival
C. English Couplets Win Hearts
D. Spring Festival Tradition: Putting up Couplets

①Stephen Hawking, one of the world’s most famous scientists, once said, “Once we step into space, our future should be safe (安全的),” Do you agree with him?
②Today, many countries such as the United States, Russia, China, are building space stations and sending astronauts there. These stations will prepare humans to visit and later live on Mars (火星) or other earth-like planets.
③Robert Zubrin, a rocket scientist, thinks it is a right thing for the countries to do so. Humans should move to other planets and build new homes there. He wants to start with Mars. Why? He thinks sending people to Mars will help us to learn a lot of things—for example, the ability (能力) of humans to live in a very different environment. In the end, we could work and live on other planets. Besides, any improvement we make in science, medicine and health will do good to people here on Earth.
④Elon Musk, the founder and CEO of Space X, a company (公司) that builds rockets, also believes we should send humans to Mars. His plan is to put about one million people there if some bad things happen to us here on Earth.
⑤ ▲ . Many people say it’s too expensive. Also, most space trips are not short. A one-way trip to Mars, for example, would take at least six months. People who have such a long way to travel could face many health problems. What’s more, these first people would find life really difficult in space. On the moon’s surface (表面), for example, the sun’s rays (光线) are very dangerous. People would have to stay indoors most of the time.
⑥Although there will be lots of difficulties, sending people into space seems certain. As the saying goes, “My conquest (征途) is the sea of stars.” In the future, we might see cities or even new human cultures on other planets.
36. How does the writer start the passage?
A. By using a science report. B. By using a man’s idea.
C. By using a famous saying. D. By using a study result.
37. What do both Robert Zubrin and Elon Musk probably agree?
A. It’s impossible to send humans into space.
B. People should live on the moon in the future.
C. It’s not a good idea to live on the Earth.
D. It’s necessary to send humans to other planets like Mars.
38. Which of the following sentences can be put in ▲ in Paragraph 5?
A. As a result, it is not easy to build space stations on the moon.
B. Many people also worry about the cost of space trips.
C. Not everyone thinks sending humans into space is a smart idea.
D. Sending humans to Mars is the only way to solve Earth’s problems.

Hi, I’m David House from the UK, a writer working for Teens Magazine. Here, I help solve the readers’ problems. I hope I can help with yours. I am looking forward to hearing from you.
Hi David, Sun, Nov. 20th 2024
I have a nickname called “Big Eater”. Every time I have a meal in the dining hall, I eat a lot more than others. The boys always laugh at me for being a “foodie (吃货)”. I feel embarrassed (尴尬的) and sad about it. What should I do?
Paul
Hi Paul,
As a food lover, I can understand. You’re still growing and have long days at school. It’s good to eat a full meal for energy (能量) and to make sure you’re getting everything your body needs.
But if you eat too much, you will be fat and that’s not good for your health. Make sure you are eating what’s right for you. It takes at least 20 minutes to start digesting (消化) food. So sometimes, you’re full before you know it.
We are all different. Some people need more food than others. For example, some have a better metabolism(新陈代谢), which means they break down food better than others. You’d better know how much food you need.
So just eat what’s right for your health and energy. As for the nickname, see it as a bit of fun. Boys always give each other nicknames. Laugh about it and find the fun in it.
Everyone’s life is full of problems. _______

Blue whales are the largest animals on Earth. Do you know that blue whales weigh as much as 33 elephants? It means they can weigh 200 tons (吨) and be about 100 feet long.
