Eleven o’clock at night saw a large woman with a large purse walking alone, when a boy ran up behind and tried to snatch (抢夺) her purse. But the boy lost his balance and fell on his back. The woman picked him up firmly by his shirt front.
“Aren’t you ashamed of yourself?” shouted the woman. Two or three people passed, stopped, and stood watching.
“I’m very sorry, lady. I’m sorry,” whispered the skinny little boy, in broken tennis shoes.
“Um-hum! And your face is dirty,” said the large woman dragging the frightened boy. “Since you put yourself in contact with me, you are going to remember Mrs. Luella Jones.”
He began to struggle, but Mrs. Jones continued to drag him up the street. When she got to her door, she dragged the boy inside. “What’s your name?” the woman asked.
“Roger,” answered the boy in a low voice. “Then, Roger, you go to that sink and wash your face,” ordered the woman and finally let go of him.
“You gonna take me to jail (监狱)?” asked Roger, bending over the sink.
“Not with that face,” said Mrs. Jones. “I believe you were hungry to snatch my purse.”
“I wanted a pair of blue shoes,” replied the boy.
There was a long pause. After he had dried his face, the boy turned around. The door was open. He could run!
After a while the woman said, “I was young once and I wanted things I could not get. I have done things too, which I would not tell anybody else, son.” There was another long pause. The boy’s mouth opened.
Then Mrs. Jones went to do the cooking. She did not watch the boy to see if he was going to run, nor did she watch her purse left behind her. She did not ask him anything about where he lived, or his folks. Instead, as they ate, she told him a lot about her job in a hotel shop and how all kinds of people came in and out. She cut him another piece of her cake.
When they finished eating, she got up and said, “Now, here, take this ten dollars and buy yourself some blue shoes. Do not make the mistake, because shoes come by devilish ways like that will burn your feet.”
She led him to the front door. “Good night! Behave yourself, son!” she said, looking out into the street.
24. How did Mrs. Jones react after catching Roger?

Last spring, my dad sent my siblings and me an email: “Need you to get whatever you want from home by early May or give us the go-ahead to toss or give away.” A month later, my sisters and I flew home to Cincinnati for the weekend to clear away our childhood belongings.
In 1984, my parents moved our family into the house where my three siblings and I grew up. When I was ten, I got my own room. I spent the next eight years in a room with a yellowish-green rug that came with the house. All through high school, I sat on the floor to do my homework and make collages (拼贴画) from Seventeen and US Weekly. I cut out listings from TV Guide and wrote in my diary about how much I loved My So-Called Life. I wrote notes to my friends and folded them in complicated ways. Twenty years ago, I graduated from high school and left Cincinnati for good.
Some of my old things were easy to get rid of — sneakers, stuffed animals and candy wrappers from 1992. Then there were all my school papers, from middle school on, organized in binders and spiral-bound notebooks. Pages and pages on Geoffrey Chaucer and ions (离子) and isosceles triangles (等腰三角形), with words of encouragement from my teachers written in the margin.
Going through it all brought me right back to my high school self and the things I was most focused on: my basketball team, designing the yearbook cover, Leonardo DiCaprio and River Phoenix, Absolute vodka and Clinique ads, quotes from the movie The Cutting Edge.
My friend Andi came over and forced me to pitch all the stuff. Together we carried garbage bags full of papers and junk to the dump-ster. In the end, I threw almost all of them away but decided to photograph them first, because I couldn't quite say goodbye forever.
Thinking back to high school, I remember being embarrassed and shy. I disliked my body and desperately longed for attention from classmates. But being forced to go through all of my things gave me a new appreciation for the other parts of who I was. Without knowing it, I was preparing for life as a photographer — I was learning about imagery, portraiture (人像摄影), art and self-expression. I was hungry to experience the world beyond my room and its stained rug.
28. Why did the author and her siblings return their childhood house?
A. To have a family reunion. B. To remove childhood belongings.
C. To move out of the house. D. To redecorate their rooms.
29. What did the author realize after going through her old belongings?
A. She had wasted too much time in high school.
B. She missed her childhood and wished to return.
C. She had been extremely popular in high school.
D. She had already started preparing for life as a photographer.
30. What is the primary purpose of the article?
A. To provide a reflection on the author’s past.
B. To explain how to clear away childhood belongings.
C. To persuade readers to hold on to their childhood memories.
D. To complain about not being able to keep her childhood belongings.
31. Which of the following best describes the tone of the article?
A. Humorous. B. Reflective.
C. Suspenseful. D. Instructive.

There’s a new kind of AI jobs. It pays six-figure salaries. And it doesn’t require a degree in computer engineering coding.
Companies are looking for people to craft prompts that help train AI programs. These people are called prompt engineers. They work on generative artificial intelligence, such as ChatGPT. This is AI that creates content, such as text, audio, video, and images, in response to a user's request. Prompt engineers train AI to deliver better response.
Anne Bernstein, a prompt engineer at Copu. ai, writes prompts and feeds them into AI tools. This helps the AI generate text, such as a blog post or email, with accurate information and proper tone. She doesn’t need to write code to do this. She simply types instructions.
Bernstein joined Copy. ai in September 2021. “There weren’t many of us prompt engineers,” she says. “For a long time, it really felt like it was just me.” That was about a year before ChatGPT went viral for its ability to generate writing and answer questions. Prompt engineering is now one of the hottest tech jobs.
Job surge (激增)
AI tools need training. At the moment, they provide results that are not always correct or proper. That’s why companies are looking for prompt engineers.
A tech company called Anthropic is advertising a “prompt engineer and librarian.” Applicants must “love solving puzzles.” In Massachusetts, Boston Children’s Hospital is advertising for a prompt engineer, too.
Rob Lennon is an expert on the topic. He teaches people the skills needed for the job. As of April, about 2,000 students had taken his two online courses. “People are clamoring for this knowledge,” Lennon says.
Will it last?
Some say the need for this job will burn out. Ethan Mollick is an associate professor at the University of Pennsylvania. “It’s not clear that prompt engineering is going to matter long-term,” he says. “AI programs are getting better at predicting what users need.”
The high salaries may not last either. “These are jobs that probably only 500 people could do right now,” Lennon says. “In six months, 50,000 people will be able to do that job. The value of this knowledge is greater today than it will be tomorrow.”
32. What is the role of a prompt engineer?
A. To write code for AI programs. B. To analyze AI-generated content.
C. To manage databases for AI companies. D. To train AI programs by crafting prompts.
33. What is the primary responsibility of a prompt engineer at Copu. ai?
A. Writing code for AI tools.
B. Providing customer support for AI users.
C. Generating text, audio, video and images for AI users.
D. Typing instructions to help AI generate accurate content.
34. What is the main reason why companies are seeking prompt engineers?
A. To reduce the cost of training AI tools.
B To provide technical support for their users.
C. To improve the accuracy of AI-generated content.
D. To cut down on the number of AI programs in use.
35. According to Ethan Mollick, what is uncertain about the future of prompt engineering jobs?
A. Whether AI programs will improve over time.
B. Whether prompt engineers will be paid high salaries.
C. Whether the jobs will remain necessary in the long term.
D. Whether prompt engineering will produce more accurate content.

About 40% adults and 19% children in the US are obese (肥胖的). ___36___. Obesity is also associated with a lower life quality and poor mental health. If you are suffering from these, here’s a way of losing weight that you can try.
___37___. It involves recording what they consume, and how much. The theory is that when thinking of what you put in your body, you’ll make healthier decisions. Can it really be that easy? There’s no doubt that dietary self-monitoring has been shown to help lose weight. ___38___.
Study shows the more often you log your eating, the more weight you might lose. Recently, researchers studied obese individuals in otherwise good health who participated in a 24-week weight control program. ___39___. The findings demonstrated that people who continued to record their food intake daily for 24 weeks lost more weight compared to those who quit noting their intake. People who lost at least 10% of their weight recorded their food intake about 3 times a day. In comparison, those who recorded less daily lost less weight. Researchers noted people might have greater success with weight loss if they recorded their dietary intake about three times a day, rather than recording all of their meals in one sitting.
___40___. Dietary self-monitoring can be performed in different ways— using an online program, using a pencil or using smart-phone applications. It is important to find what works for you.
A. Dietary “self-monitoring” is a common strategy

I went on holiday recently and didn’t take a single photo. That was not because it wasn’t an “Instagram able location” or because I wasn’t having a good time. In fact, not taking photos wasn’t even a(n) ____41____ decision, at least at first.
Not having to ____42____ getting “the perfect shot” was relaxing. The two weeks of holiday were spent being truly in the moment. The exhaustion of trying to capture every single sunset, meal and pool shot ____43____. Not snapping away like crazy saved me ____44____ to actually enjoy every moment. It made for a more ____45____ experience. I wasn’t constantly distracted by angles, lighting and filters (滤镜). I simply absorbed what was happening in front of me.
The irony (讽刺之处) is that most people take a picture in order to keep a memory ____46____. Nevertheless, psychologists say you’re actually rewriting over that memory by doing so.
Linda Henkel, a psychology professor at Fairfield University, conducted a study in 2014 with 28 university students. These students were asked to observe 15 objects with their own ____47____ and snap photos of 15 others in a museum. When they were tested the next day, they weren’t able to remember as many features of the objects that they had ____48____ compared with those they had seen with their eyes. Henkel found that taking photos led to an “impairment effect.” That is to say, the subjects remembered fewer ____49____ of an experience.
“As soon as you hit ‘click’ on that camera, it’s as if you’ve outsourced (外包) your memory,” she says. “We have this expectation that the camera is going to remember things for us, so we don’t have to continue ____50____ that object and we don’t engage in the types of things that would otherwise help us to remember it.” With smartphones and devices that automatically (自动地) take a picture every 30 seconds, how much is too much? How do we know when we are taking too many pictures and ____51____ our memories?
____52____ most of us are taking more photos than we can handle. Who among us hasn’t regularly wondered what to do with our smartphone photos and struggled to ____53____ old ones to clear out storage space?
We’ve already been told that Instagramming food makes meals taste ____54____. Perhaps that’s why I ate such delicious food on my recent two-week holiday.
As ____55____ as it may be to snap away to my heart’s content, I think I’m going to start putting the phone down more often in order to actually enjoy the time with my loved ones instead.

67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写一段,使之构成一篇完整短文。
I was already afraid of the water. After experiencing a shark attack when I was eight years old on a family trip to Florida, I barely went in the ocean any deeper than my knees. By shark, I mean dolphin, and by attack, I mean he was bobbing around in the water about five miles from shore, but people were screaming “SHARK!”and waving their hands around along the coastline. Real shark or not, that moment stuck with me. That memory, coupled with being freezing in any weather less than thirty degrees Celsius (摄氏), made the idea of plunging (投入) into cold water a hard pass.
My husband, Mike, had been cold plunging (冰浴) for years and would present me with facts to prove that it was a good thing. By doing so, you experience benefits such as heightened energy, immune (免疫的) system support, boosted mood, better sleep, and stress reduction. It was an appealing list of benefits—none of which mattered to me. What was presented as a clear “wonder drug” was still not attractive enough for me to get out of my warm house and go swimming. Did I mention that I live in Canada? It’s minus twenty degrees Celsius here sometimes.
On New Year’s Day, Mike invited me to his cold plunging. I had been thinking less about health data and more about my confidence. Do you want to do something hard? Something brave? I asked myself. Something completely scary, uncomfortable and seemingly crazy, or do you want to say no and focus on all of the reasons why you wouldn’t dare? I put on my swimsuit, covered it up with eighteen wool sweaters, and joined Mike for the adventure.
In fairness, it was a beautiful day. This made the scary thing feel a little more reasonable as Inegotiated (谈判;协商) with myself the entire twelve-minute drive. My heart was already pounding. We had packed a bag with towels, blankets, warm water for cleaning our sandy feet, and a hot cup of coffee to warm our hands.
注意:
1.续写词数应为 150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
I was determined to do the hard thing.

Before I came to China, I could speak both English and French, but now I can also speak Chinese. I’m the only child in my family. B
A. She called the police. B. She comforted him gently.
C. She ignored him. D. She took him home.
25. Roger felt when hearing Mrs. Jones’ past.
A. scared B. impatient C. calm D. shocked

A. Humorous and friendly. B. optimistic and outgoing.
C. Hard-working and imaginative. D. Strict and wise.

32 What is the role of a prompt engineer?
B. To provide technical support for their users.
C. To improve the accuracy of AI-generated content.
D. To cut down on the number of AI programs in use.
35. According to Ethan Mollick, what is uncertain about the future of prompt engineering jobs?
A Whether AI programs will improve over time.
B. Whether prompt engineers will be paid high salaries.
C. Whether the jobs will remain necessary in the long term.
D. Whether prompt engineering will produce more accurate content.
【答案】32. D 33. D 34. C 35. C

B. They recorded their daily dietary intake using an online program
C. Daily dietary intake is a very crucial factor
D. Dietary self-monitoring can be complex
E. Obese people are at increased risk of many serious diseases
F. A good principle to follow may be “write when you bite”
G. However, not much is known about how long this takes or how often it should be done
【答案】36. E 37. A 38. G 39. B 40. F
【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍了一个可以尝试的减肥方法。
【36题详解】
空格后的句子“Obesity is also associated with a lower life quality and poor mental health. (肥胖还与较低的生活质量和较差的心理健康有关。)”是说肥胖会影响生活质量和心理健康,根据句中的also可知,空格处的句子也应该是说肥胖的不良影响,所以,E项“Obese people are at increased risk of many serious diseases (肥胖人群罹患许多严重疾病的风险增加)”填入空格处,符合语境。故选E项。
【37题详解】
上文的句子“If you are suffering from these, here’s a way of losing weight that you can try. (如果你正遭受这些折磨,这里有一个你可以尝试的减肥方法。)”提到一个可以尝试的减肥方法,空格处的句子应该接着说这种方法是什么。所以,A项“Dietary “self-monitoring” is a common strategy (饮食“自我监控”是一种常见的策略)”填入空格处,符合语境。故选A项。
【38题详解】
根据空格前的句子“There’s no doubt that dietary self-monitoring has been shown to help lose weight. (毫无疑问,饮食自我监控有助于减肥。)”下一段第一句“Study shows the more often you log your eating, the more weight you might lose. (研究表明,你越经常记录你的饮食,你就可能减得越多。)”可知,空格处的句子应该提到自我监控记录的时间和频率问题,所以,G项“However, not much is known about how long this takes or how often it should be done (然而,对于这需要多长时间或应该多久进行一次,我们知之甚少)”填入空格处,符合语境。故选G项。
【39题详解】
根据下文的研究结果“The findings demonstrated that people who continued to record their food intake daily for 24 weeks lost more weight compared to those who quit noting their intake. People who lost at least 10% of their weight recorded their food intake about 3 times a day. (研究结果表明,那些连续24周每天记录食物摄入量的人比那些不再记录食物摄入量的人减掉了更多的体重。那些体重减轻至少10%的人每天记录三次食物摄入量。)”可知,空格处的句子应该提到,被研究对象每天记录食物摄入量的事,所以,B项“They recorded their daily dietary intake using an online program (他们使用一个在线程序记录了他们每天的饮食摄入量)”填入空格处,符合语境。故选B项。
【40题详解】
根据上文的句子“Researchers noted people might have greater success with weight loss if they recorded their dietary intake about three times a day, rather than recording all of their meals in one sitting. (研究人员指出,如果人们每天记录三次他们的饮食摄入,而不是一次记录所有的食物,他们可能会在减肥方面取得更大的成功。)”可知,记录事物摄入量的最好的方法是每天分三次记录,也就是三餐的时候记录。所以,F项“A good principle to follow may be “write when you bite” (一个可以遵循的原则是“咬的时候就写”)”填入空格处,和上文的句子是顺接关系。故选F项。

第二节(满分25分)
67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写一段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
注意:
1.续写词数应为 150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
I was determined to do the hard thing.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
I have now been cold plunging for over a year.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:
I was determined to do the hard thing. I dipped a toe in the icy waters. Slowly, I inched my legs forward until the waves unexpectedly climbed up to my kneecaps. My first cold plunging lasted five seconds. I was out of that water faster than a ball from a cannon. I screamed, laughed, and tripped. I had done it! The feeling of accomplishment washed away all my fears. I already knew I had the courage to go under, but now I had to work on staying there. The following week I stayed a little longer. I taught myself I could trust myself, knowing that I was more powerful than that taunting voice in my head.
I have now been cold dipping for over a year. In the depths of winter, I have broken through ice and breathed through the icy cold. I enjoy those moments more than any other part of my day. I am thinking only about survival, not my car payment, the garden that needs cleaning, or my gray hair. The first thirty seconds are still challenging, and l always get a little nervous before I step into the lake or ocean. But I have learned to relax in this state of immersion. What began as a place of fear has become a place of finding happiness.
