A
Success is something many people work very hard for. Achieving success is difficult enough, but keeping it going is even harder. That’s why truly successful people never stop improving themselves and work on their positive habits all the time. What we consistently do every day makes us who we are. Developing daily routines that will work for us and make us better is one of the keys to success. So, let’s look at what many successful people do every day to improve themselves.
1. They have a plan
Successful people realise how important everyday tasks are. Having a plan helps you remember everything and deal with all the things you procrastinate as soon as possible. It’s even better if you write your plan down somewhere.
2. They find time for hobbies
Most often, successful people are interested in certain activities. A Saturday golf game can be a great way to establish good contacts. However, even the small “alone” hobbies such as singing or drawing can help you succeed by releasing stress or waking up your creative side.
3. They are active
Successful people understand the importance of an active life. The more active your body is, the more active your brain works. Weekends are not an exception, by the way.
4. They learn
Successful people always find a way to learn something new. They read books and articles, communicate with smart people, go through trusted websites, etc. Eventually their brains work out new ideas that can make them successful.
5. They analyse
A great thing successful people do is analysing their day before going to sleep. Was this day productive? Did I do everything I had planned? What shouldn’t I have done today? What should I improve tomorrow? When you think of the good things you did today, it helps you make progress on them tomorrow. When you think of your mistakes, it prevents you from repeating them the next day. Analysing is a great thing to do at the end of the day.
36. According to the author, why do successful people never stop improving themselves?

D. A student who thinks of the mistakes he has made when preparing for a test.
40. What’s the purpose of this passage?
A. To encourage people to become successful.
B. To persuade people to develop good behaviours.

Belt and Road Initiative: Contribution by All, Benefits for All
The Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), referring to the plan to build the Silk Road Economic Belt and the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road, was proposed by China in 2013 to improve policy communication and cooperation, connect facilities, promote open and flexible trade, expand economic integration, and strengthen people-to-people exchange on a trans-continental scale. The BRI is a comprehensive initiative that seeks to embrace all aspects of development, aiming to link China-physically and financially-to dozens of economies across Asia, Europe, Africa, etc.
As Beijing celebrated the sixth anniversary of the BRI, China had already invested at least $900 billion in projects in the BRI countries, mainly in basic facility transport, and energy.
As the slogan “Contribution by All, Benefits for All” suggests, the BRI creates a win-win situation by making the world more interconnected and creating amity between nations. Ji Bingxuan, vice chairman of the NPC Standing Committee, believes that the BRI sets the stage for promoting global friendship and “will build a road to peace”, as it “reinforces people-to-people connectivity” along the Belt and Road. China is also inviting nations to “set aside prejudices” and “revive ancient history”.
In general, when the BRI is fully implemented, it will make the world safer as the economies of the countries along the Belt and Road will complement each other.
So far, many countries including Pakistan, Russia, Hungary, New Zealand, Poland, and Serbia have joined the initiative. Together they make up at least 30% of global GDP, 60% of the world’s population, and 75% of known energy reserves.
The scope of the initiative is still taking shape. It has been interpreted to be open to all countries as well as international and regional organisations.
41. Which of the following is NOT a goal of the BRI?
A. To connect facilities.
B. To promote open trade.
C. To strengthen exchange.
D. To discuss international politics.
42. What does the underlined word “amity” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Relation. B. Conflict. C. Equality. D. Friendship.
43. According to the passage, how does the BRI make the world safer?
A. It includes nations that make up 30% of global GDP.
B. It has broken down prejudices against certain nations.
C. It combines the economies of the participating countries.
D. It boosts people’s interests in the history of different countries.
44. Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?
A. The projects help the BRI countries with their basic facilities.
B. The BRI countries make up 75% of the world’s population.
C. The BRI sets the stage for promoting global friendship.
D. The BRI successfully creates a win-win situation.
45. What’s the purpose of this passage?
A. To argue that the BRI is a road to peace.
B. To introduce the development of the BRI.
C. To persuade more countries to join the BRI.
D. To explain the planned strategies of the BRI.

The temperature is sharply rising with each passing day. People, including many experts, find it difficult to slow down the process. However, leaving coal and major fossil fuels in the ground could help to limit climate change in the future, according to a new study. That is to say, a third of oil reserves on the earth, half of gas reserves and over 80 percent of current coal reserves should not be used before the year 2050. If we are to prevent global temperatures from rising above 2 degrees Celsius in the near future, we ought to carry some measures to severely control the emissions from factories vehicles and even our daily-life cooking. However, it is a goal that seems to be impossible in our eyes.
“Policy makers in different countries must realize that their attempt to completely use the fossil fuels within their countries is wholly incompatible (矛盾的) with their hope to reach the2-degree goal,” Dr. Christophe Mc Glade at University College London’s Energy Institute said in a statement. “If they go ahead with developing their own resources,” he added, “they must be asked which reserves elsewhere should remain unburned in order for the carbon budget not to go beyond the limit.”
It’s not surprising to see how tapping into these unused reserves would be attractive. Energy-related industry is a big business all over the world. There are many coal reserves in China, Russia and the United States, along with over 260 thousand million barrels of oil reserves in the Middle East. Not to mention that oil is currently being developed in the Arctic. Companies spent over $670 billion last year in the expansion of fossil fuels, but according to the new model used in this latest study, developers may need to rethink their plans to develop these underground resources so as to make some contributions to control the world temperature from rising high in the future.
“We’ve now got practical figures of the quantities and locations of fossil fuels that should remain unused in trying to keep within the 2-degree temperature limit,” added Mc Glade. World leaders and policy makers should take the advice to heart, because a recent IPCC report warned that if immediate and great actions are not taken soon, climate change will cause irreversible (不可逆转的) impacts on environments worldwide, leaving the world an unsafe place for us to live in.
46. According to Paragraph 1, our goal is to ______.
A. discover more fossil fuels for the future generation
B. slow down the climate change
C. keep the temperature rise below 2 degrees Celsius
D. refuse to use reserves on the earth
47. The underlined word “emissions” in Paragraph 1 refers to ______.
A. things that are sent out into the air
B. products that are made from fossil fuels
C. factors that cause the climate change
D. changes that happen after temperature rise
48. According to what Mc Glade said in Paragraph 2, all countries should ______.
A. make full use of their fossil fuels
B. work together towards the 2-degree goal
C. find better ways to dig out the coal
D. increase the global carbon budget
49. We can infer from Paragraph 3 that great efforts have been made in ______.
A. developing fossil fuels around the world
B. getting people to rethink their fuel plans
C. digging out the oil in the Middle East
D. developing energy-related industry worldwide
50. What is the author’s attitude towards the future of temperature control?
A. Confident. B. Unclear. C. Satisfied. D. Negative.
D
You are given many opportunities in life to choose to be a victim or creator. When you choose to be a victim, the world is a cold and difficult place. “They” did things to you which caused all of your pain and suffering. “They” are wrong and bad, and life is terrible as long as “they” are around. Or you may blame yourself for all your problems, thus internalizing (内化) your victimization. The truth is, your life is likely to stay that way as long as you feel a need to blame yourself or others.
Those who choose to be creators look at life quite differently. They know there are individuals who might like to control their lives, but they don’t let this get in the way. They know they have their weaknesses, yet they don’t blame themselves when they fail. Whatever happens, they have choice in the matter. They believe their dance with each sacred (神圣的) moment of life is a gift and that storms are a natural part of life which can bring the rain needed for emotional and spiritual growth.
Victims and creators live in the same physical world and deal with many of the same physical realities, yet their experience of life is worlds apart. Victims relish (沉溺) in anger, guilt, and other emotions that cause others—and even themselves—to feel like victims, too. Creators consciously choose love, inspiration, and other qualities which inspire not only themselves, but all around them. Both victims and creators always have choice to determine the direction of their lives.
In reality, all of us play the victim or the creator at various points in our lives. One person, on losing a job or a special relationship, may feel as if it is the end of the world and sink into terrible suffering for months, years, or even a lifetime. Another with the same experience may choose to first experience the grief, then accept the loss and soon move on to be a powerful creative force in his life.
In every moment and every circumstance, you can choose to have fuller, richer life by setting a clear intention to transform the victim within, and by inviting into your life the powerful creator that you are.
51. What does the word “they” in Paragraph 1 probably refer to?
A. People and things around you. B. Opportunities and problems.
C. Creators and their choices. D. Victims and their sufferings.
52. According to Paragraph 2, creators __________.
A. seem willing to experience failures in life
B. possess the ability to predict future life
C. handle ups and downs of life wisely
D. have potential to create something new
53. What can we learn from Paragraph 3?
A. Creators and victims face quite different things in life.
B Creators and victims are masters of their lives.
C. Victims can influence more people than creators.
D. Compared with victims, creators are more emotional.
54. The examples mentioned in Paragraph 4 show that _______________.
A. strong attachment to sufferings in life pulls people into victims.
B. people need family support to deal with challengers in life.
C. it takes creators quite a long time to get rid of their pains.
D. one’s experiences determine his attitude toward life.
55. What is the author’s purpose in writing this passage?
A. To define victims and creators.
B. To evaluate victims against creators.
C. To explain the relationship between victims and creators.
D. To suggest the transformation from victims to creators.

In the 1950s, mothers always wore aprons (围裙) and prepared homemade meals. However, my mom was not a typical mom. She never wore an apron and she earned the name— The Can-Opener Queen— because she wasn’t much of a cook. She didn’t bake cookies or cakes.
When my mom wanted to impress us with a big dinner, she didn’t cook a roast. She just poured sliced roast beef right from the can onto potatoes. She and Chef Boyardee (a brand of canned pasta products sold internationally) made great spaghetti and meatballs, and Dinty Moore helped her cook up a wonderful beef soup.
She always ended the evening meal with cookies, but she did better when she bought those. My mom’s only attempt at baking cookies resulted in a mess. It happened years ago. She said she was going to make warm chocolate-chip cookies for us like other mothers did. However, when she opened the oven door, the bad smell nearly made us unable to breathe. Since she had never used the oven, she set a too high temperature and all the cookies were burnt. Her tears flowed down.
“It’s OK, Mom. They’ re not so bad,” my brother and I said. “Though they are burnt too much, we’ll eat them.” She dried her tears and then she made an offer that we couldn’t refuse. “You kids want to walk with me to the bakery?”
The Can-Opener Queen didn’t make homemade soups or desserts, but she raised us with a lot of stories when we sat down to eat. She never stopped teaching us love, forgiveness and kindness. To this day, I always use my mom’s favorite recipe (食谱). It has only two basic steps: generously add love to everything you serve, and do not do to others what you do not want others to do to you.

A. They become more positive after achieving success.
B. They become much greedier after achieving success.
C. Being successful makes them more nervous than before.
D. Keeping successful is more difficult than achieving success.
37. What does the underlined word “procrastinate” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. forget B. delay C. refuse D. reject

A. People can feel less stressed and procrastinate less.
B. People can connect with others and learn from them.

D. People can relax themselves and improve their creativity.
39. According to the author, which of the following is NOT an example of a successful person?

B. A women who spends her weekends exercising and meeting with friends.
C. A man who likes reading articles on professional websites in his spare time.

A To connect facilities.

C. To strengthen exchange.
D. To discuss international politics.
42. What does the underlined word “amity” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Relation. B. Conflict. C. Equality. D. Friendship.

根据文章第三段中的“the BRI creates a win-win situation by making the world more interconnected and creating (“一带一路”实现了互利共赢,通过使世界更加互联并创造)”可知,“一带一路”通过使世界更加互联并在国家之间创造友好关系来创造双赢的局面。
根据文章倒数第三段“In general, when the BRI is fully implemented, it will make the world safer as the economies of the countries along the Belt and Road will complement each other. (总体而言,当“一带一路”倡议完全实施时,它将使世界更安全,因为“一带一路”沿线国家的经济将相互补充。)”可知,BRI通过结合参与国家的经济来使世界更安全。故选C。
【44题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章倒数第二段“So far, many countries including Pakistan, Russia, Hungary, New Zealand, Poland, and Serbia have joined the initiative. Together they make up at least 30% of global GDP, 60% of the world’s population, and 75% of known energy reserves. (迄今为止,包括巴基斯坦、俄罗斯、匈牙利、新西兰、波兰和塞尔维亚在内的许多国家已加入该倡议。这些国家的经济总量占全球GDP的至少30%,人口占世界的60%,已知能源储量占全球的75%。)”可知,“一带一路”沿线国家占世界人口的60%,不是75%,选项B描述错误。故选B。
【45题详解】
推理判断题。通读全文,尤其是根据文章第一段中“The Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), referring to the plan to build the Silk Road Economic Belt and the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road, was proposed by China in 2013 to improve policy communication and cooperation, connect facilities, promote open and flexible trade, expand economic integration, and strengthen people-to-people exchange on a trans-continental scale. (“一带一路”倡议(BRI),即建设丝绸之路经济带和21世纪海上丝绸之路的计划,是中国于2013年提出的,旨在加强政策沟通与合作,实现设施联通,促进贸易畅通,深化经济融合,以及增进民心相通,其范围跨越多个大陆。)”和倒数第二段“So far, many countries including Pakistan, Russia, Hungary, New Zealand, Poland, and Serbia have joined the initiative. Together they make up at least 30% of global GDP, 60% of the world’s population, and 75% of known energy reserves. (迄今为止,包括巴基斯坦、俄罗斯、匈牙利、新西兰、波兰和塞尔维亚在内的许多国家已加入该倡议。这些国家的经济总量占全球GDP的至少30%,人口占世界的60%,已知能源储量占全球的75%。)”可知,文章主要介绍了“一带一路”,目的是介绍“一带一路”的发展。故选B。
C
A. Confident. B. Unclear. C. Satisfied. D. Negative.
46. C 47. A 48. B 49. A 50. D

根据第一段“If we are to prevent global temperatures from rising above 2 degrees Celsius in the near future, we ought to carry some measures to severely control the emissions from factories vehicles and even our daily-life cooking. However, it is a goal that seems to be impossible in our eyes.(如果我们要防止全球气温在不久的将来上升超过2摄氏度,我们应该采取一些措施来严格控制工厂车辆甚至我们日常生活中的烹饪的排放。然而,在我们看来,这是一个似乎不可能实现的目标)”可知,我们的目标是把温度上升控制在2摄氏度以下。故选C项。
【47题详解】
词句猜测题。根据前文“However, leaving coal and major fossil fuels in the ground could help to limit climate change in the future, according to a new study. That is to say, a third of oil reserves on the earth, half of gas reserves and over 80 percent of current coal reserves should not be used before the year 2050. If we are to prevent global temperatures from rising above 2 degrees Celsius in the near future(然而,一项新的研究表明,将煤炭和主要化石燃料留在地下可能有助于限制未来的气候变化。 故选A项。
根据第二段““Policy makers in different countries must realize that their attempt to completely use the fossil fuels within their countries is wholly incompatible (矛盾的) with their hope to reach the2-degree goal,” Dr. Christophe Mc Glade at University College London’s Energy Institute said in a statement. “If they go ahead with developing their own resources,” he added, “they must be asked which reserves elsewhere should remain unburned in order for the carbon budget not to go beyond the limit.”(伦敦大学学院能源研究所的Christophe Mc Glade博士在一份声明中说:“不同国家的政策制定者必须意识到,他们在国内完全使用化石燃料的尝试与他们实现2摄氏度目标的希望是完全不相容的。”“如果他们继续开发自己的资源,”他补充说,“必须问他们,其他地方的哪些储量应该保留下来,以使碳预算不超过限制。”)”可知,根据Mc Glade说的,所有国家都应该共同努力实现2摄氏度的目标。故选B项。
【49题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“There are many coal reserves in China, Russia and the United States, along with over 260 thousand million barrels of oil reserves in the Middle East. 【50题详解】
推理判断题。根据第一段“If we are to prevent global temperatures from rising above 2 degrees Celsius in the near future, we ought to carry some measures to severely control the emissions from factories vehicles and even our daily-life cooking. However, it is a goal that seems to be impossible in our eyes.(如果我们要防止全球气温在不久的将来上升超过2摄氏度,我们应该采取一些措施来严格控制工厂车辆甚至我们日常生活中的烹饪的排放。然而,在我们看来,这是一个似乎不可能实现的目标)”可知,作者认为这是一个似乎不可能实现的目标,所以是消极的。故选D项。
B. Creators and victims are masters of their lives.

66. Why was the author’s mom not typical? (no more than 15 words)
________________________________________________________________________________
67. What would the author’s mom do to treat her kids with a big dinner? (no more than 10 words)
________________________________________________________________________________
68. How can we understand the underlined part in Paragraph 3? (no more than 10 words)
________________________________________________________________________________
69. Why did the author and her brother say these words in Paragraph 4? (no more than 10 words)
________________________________________________________________________________
70. What do you think of the author’s mom’s favorite recipe? Why? (no more than 20 words)
________________________________________________________________________________
66. Because she didn’t wear an apron or prepare homemade meals like other moms.
67. She would offer several kinds of canned foods to them.
68. Mom tried to bake cookies only once but failed.
69. They wanted to comfort their mom.
70. I think it is very meaningful because it teaches the author the importance of showing love and respect.
根据第一段“In the 1950s, mothers always wore aprons (围裙) and prepared homemade meals. However, my mom was not a typical mom. She never wore an apron and she earned the name— The Can-Opener Queen— because she wasn’t much of a cook. She didn’t bake cookies or cakes.(在20世纪50年代,母亲们总是系着围裙,自制饭菜。然而,我的母亲并不是一个典型的母亲。她从不系围裙,也因此赢得了“开罐女王”的称号,因为她不太会做饭。她不烤饼干或蛋糕)”可知,作者的母亲不系围裙也不太会做饭,所以不是一个典型的母亲。故答案是:Because she didn’t wear an apron or prepare homemade meals like other moms.
根据第二段“When my mom wanted to impress us with a big dinner, she didn’t cook a roast. She just poured sliced roast beef right from the can onto potatoes. She and Chef Boyardee (a brand of canned pasta products sold internationally) made great spaghetti and meatballs, and Dinty Moore helped her cook up a wonderful beef soup.(当我妈妈想用丰盛的晚餐给我们留下深刻印象时,她没有做烤肉。她直接把罐头里的烤牛肉片倒在土豆上。她和Chef Boyardee(一个国际销售的罐装面食品牌)做了很棒的意大利面和肉丸,Dinty Moore帮她做了美味的牛肉汤)”可知,作者的妈妈会给他们几种罐头食品来款待她的孩子一顿丰盛的晚餐。故答案是:She would offer several kinds of canned foods to them.
根据后文“It happened years ago. She said she was going to make warm chocolate-chip cookies for us like other mothers did. However, when she opened the oven door, the bad smell nearly made us unable to breathe. Since she had never used the oven, she set a too high temperature and all the cookies were burnt.(那是几年前的事了。她说她要像其他妈妈一样为我们做热巧克力饼干。然而,当她打开烤箱门时,难闻的气味几乎让我们无法呼吸。因为她从来没用过烤箱,所以她把温度调得太高,所有的饼干都烤焦了)”可知,妈妈试着烤过一次饼干,但失败了。故答案是:Mom tried to bake cookies only once but failed.
根据第四段““It’s OK, Mom. They’ re not so bad,” my brother and I said. “Though they are burnt too much, we’ll eat them.” She dried her tears and then she made an offer that we couldn’t refuse. “You kids want to walk with me to the bakery?”(“没事的,妈妈。他们不是那么糟糕,”我和哥哥说。“虽然烤得太焦了,我们还是要吃。”她擦干眼泪,然后提出了一个我们无法拒绝的条件。“你们想和我一起去面包店吗?”)”结合前文内容可知,妈妈烤饼干失败了,所以他们想安慰他们的妈妈。故答案是:They wanted to comfort their mom.
根据最后一段“The Can-Opener Queen didn’t make homemade soups or desserts, but she raised us with a lot of stories when we sat down to eat. She never stopped teaching us love, forgiveness and kindness. To this day, I always use my mom’s favorite recipe(食谱). It has only two basic steps: generously add love to everything you serve, and do not do to others what you do not want others to do to you.(开罐女王不自制汤或甜点,但当我们坐下来吃饭时,她给我们讲了很多故事。她从未停止教导我们爱、宽恕和善良。直到今天,我总是用我妈妈最喜欢的食谱。它只有两个基本步骤:慷慨地把爱加到你所服务的每件事上,你不希望别人对你做什么,不要对别人做什么)”可知,我认为作者妈妈最喜欢的食谱很有意义,因为它教会了作者表达爱和尊重的重要性。故答案是:I think it is very meaningful because it teaches the author the importance of showing love and respect.

Dear Jim,
How is everything going?
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Yours,
Li Hua
Dear Jim,
How is everything going? I heard you have been struggling with social media addiction recently. I’m so sorry to hear that. You know, I used to be addicted to social media too, so I totally understand how you feel. Maybe I can give you some advice.
I think there are many reasons for us to be addicted to social media. The most important one is that many of our friends are online, so we want to keep up with their recent status and show them ours. Well, actually real friendships won’t end without social media. There are many alternatives for us to maintain contact with friends.
Using social media too often would cost you a lot of time, which may worsen your academic performance and make you lose the motivation to initiate face-to-face communication.
I suggest you try to keep away from your devices, and get out of your house to meet your friends and chat with them in person. I’m sure that will help.
I hope you get back on track soon.
Yours,
Li Hua
