Jim Thorpe is one of the greatest athletes of all time. He had amazing athletic abilities and was well-known during his lifetime, yet that did not make Thorpe a stranger to adversity.
Thorpe was an American Indian from Oklahoma who developed his extraordinary athletic skills in his youth through hard labor. It was also in his youth that he learned to endure hardship brought upon by racial prejudice. Many would say his childhood was not easy. He grew up poor and at age 9 his twin brother passed away and a few years later he lost both of his parents.
But that did not stop him from doing what he loved and pursuing his dreams. Nothing seemed to stop him, not even stolen shoes. Just hours before Thorpe was going to compete in the 1912 Olympics, somebody stole his shoes. Thorpe improvised (临时拼凑) by getting shoes out of the garbage. The shoes were two different sizes. He wore an extra pair of socks on one foot to even them out.
He still went on to win two gold medals—winning each event he competed in except for one, the javelin (标枪). The javelin was the only event he didn’t win, probably because he had never competed in that event before. It is interesting to note that Thorpe had tried to throw the javelin once before in the Olympic trials. At the time, he didn’t know that he could throw it with a running start. He threw it standing still and was placed second.
At the Olympics,he also took part in the decathlon He finished first in two events, third in four events, and fourth in two more. Thorpe ended up finishing third in the world. He was undoubtedly a dominating force that couldn’t be stopped and just kept on going.
I think Paul Dughi said it best, “It’s hard to imagine now that pro athletes get paid millions of dollars just to wear a particular brand of shoes. For Jim Thorpe, it didn’t matter what kind he wore.”
4. What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 1 mean?
A. The adversity Thorpe met with led to his success.
B Thorpe’s success was no guarantee of a better life.
C. Thorpe’s career brought him both gains and losses.
D. Thorpe suffered many hardships despite his success.
5. Why did Thorpe wear more socks on one foot?
A. To prevent the foot from injury. B. To make the shoe fit the foot.
C. To stop the shoe from being stolen. D. To show his problem-solving skills.
6. What most likely led to Thorpe’s failure to win the javelin?
A. Loss of his own sports shoes. B. A casual attitude towards the event.
C. Lack of experience in the event. D. A shortage of talent for the event.
7. Which of the following words can best describe Jim Thorpe?
A. Loyal and enthusiastic. B. Genuine and creative.
C. Tough and strong-minded. D. Selfless and good-tempered.
D 5. B 6. C 7. C

根据划线词上文“Jim Thorpe is one of the greatest athletes of all time. He had amazing athletic abilities and was well-known during his lifetime, yet”第二段“Thorpe was an American Indian from Oklahoma who developed his extraordinary athletic skills in his youth through hard labor. It was also in his youth that he learned to endure hardship brought upon by racial prejudice. Many would say his childhood was not easy. He grew up poor and at age 9 his twin brother passed away and a few years later he lost both of his parents.(索普是来自俄克拉荷马州的美国印第安人,他在年轻时通过艰苦的劳动培养了非凡的运动技能。

Today’s journalists face modern challenges. Online media platforms are springing up. And the lowly newspaper — and its reporters — are fighting money tech, and distrust issues. Journalism students and teachers must emphasize new skills to keep their profession alive.
A trustworthy press helps inform people and monitor all levels of government. That is essential to a nation. Yet this useful establishment is growing increasingly unpopular. According to the University of North Carolina (UNC), newsroom jobs across the Country are fewer than half what they were 10 years ago. And on many college campuses, the news about the news is bleak too.
Take the Syracuse, New York, student-run newspaper The Daily Orange: It isn’t daily anymore. The paper prints just three times each week. Next year, The Diamondback of the University of Maryland will be online only. Half the newspapers that still exist on paper say they don’t print as many copies. And UNC’s The Daily Tar Heel has cut staff pay and rented cheaper offices to make is budget.
Considering the problems in journalism, it’s surprising that the enrollment (注册人数) in college journalism programs is up. The Daily Orange managing editor Catherine Leffert calls the layoffs and cutbacks disheartening. “But what keeps me wanting to be a journalist is seeing the effect that The Daily Orange has,” he says.
But journalism educators wonder, “Are we preparing young people for a dying industry?” Years ago, journalism graduates took low-level reporter jobs at newspapers or television stations. That sill happens. But today’s jobs more often involve digital editing, social media production, and video streaming. Some universities are taking action. The University of Florida offers a sports media program. Several schools highlight statistics-driven data journalism.
The news isn’t all bad. Journalism professor Kathleen Culver says, “When I look at 18-and 20-year-olds in journalism and see what they want to do, I’m optimistic.” Maddy Arrowood is the student editor of The Daily Tar Heel. She says her experience makes her more interested in a journalism career, not less. Her optimism “comes from knowing that people still need news. They still need information.”
8. What does the underlined word “bleak” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Useless. B. Interesting. C. Hopeless. D. Encouraging.
9. How do some universities respond to today’s journalism?
A. They reduce student enrollment.
B. They offer students specialized programs.
C. They prepare students for low-level reporter jobs.
D. They encourage students to run their own newspaper.
10. Why is Maddy Arrowood mentioned in the last paragraph?
A. To prove the potential of a career in journalism.
B. To show people’s positive attitudes to journalists.
C. To show the popularity of The Daily Tar Heel.
D. To prove people’s thirst for the latest news.
11. What might be the best title for the text?
A. Does journalism have a future? B. Are journalists still influential today?
C. What is journalism? D. What does a journalist do?
C 9. B 10. A 11. A

根据文章第五段“Some universities are taking action. The University of Florida offers a sports media program.(一些大学正在采取行动。佛罗里达大学提供体育媒体课程)”可知,许多大学通过开设媒体专业课程来回应这则新闻。故选B项。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段 “She says her experience makes her more interested in a journalism career, not less. Her optimism comes from knowing that people still need news. They still need information.(她说她的经历让她对新闻事业更感兴趣,而不是更不感兴趣,她的乐观来自于人们仍然需要新闻,他们仍然需要信息)”可知,Maddy Arrowood认为人们对于新闻依然存在需求,所以新闻媒体依然存在市场。 故选A项。
Online media platforms are springing up. And the lowly newspaper — and its reporters — are fighting money, tech, and distrust issues. Journalism students and teachers must emphasize new skills to keep their profession alive.(今天的记者面临着现代化的挑战。网络媒体平台如雨后春笋般涌现。而那些地位低下的报纸——和它的记者们——正在与金钱、科技和不信任问题作斗争。新闻专业的学生和教师必须强调新的技能,以保持他们的职业生命力)”可知,整篇文章讲述了新闻业面临着的巨大挑战,新闻业到底能不能生存以及怎样生存这个问题。所以A项“新闻业还有未来吗?”符合题意,适合做标题。故选A项。

As the COVID-19 pandemic continues, healthcare workers continue to risk their lives to treat patients. Under the current system, diagnosing, monitoring, and managing COVID-19 are contributing to its spread through contact. In an effort to improve this situation, data analytics company SDG Group has announced a new smartphone application called Docdot to help doctors collect relevant clinical data through telemonitoring.
Docdot uses facial recognition technology on smartphone cameras to detect a patient’s vita signs and process them using artificial intelligence. This recognition and processing technology (photoplethysmography) was developed by Binah. ai. It enables smartphone cameras to use the light reflected by blood vessels (血管) under the skin to detect and record changes in the volume of blood flowing in blood vessels under the skin, and that occur due to variations in respiration (呼 吸), blood pressure, etc. The app converts this into measurements reportedly 90 percent as accurate as hospital-grade monitors.
Docdot enables people to look into their smartphone’s screen and share early indicators of infection .It gives health workers the information they need to triage (分诊) patients at a safe distance, preventing unnecessary visits to hospitals and reducing the risk of exposure among health workers and patients. This maximizes the availability of healthcare resources for those who need them most, and contributes to slowing the spread of the virus.
“Use of this technology for virus monitoring and detection is new,” says Heather Beardmore, SDG Group UK chief executive. “This healthcare innovation is the first remote-monitoring and triage tool with potential to transform diagnosis and management.” It is also recognized by World Health Organization (WHO) and Forbes as being one of the most innovative digital health solutions worldwide. Docdot has undergone clinical trials in Canada India and Japan, and is now used in the USA hospitals.
12. What is the function of Docdot?
A. To manage COVID-19 effectively.
B. To detect COVID-19 patients accurately.
C. To monitor COVID-19 patients remotely.
D. To treat COVID-19 patients successfully.
13. What is the second paragraph mainly about?
A. How Docdot works.
B. How to use Docdot.
C. Where to use Docdot.
D. What advantages Docdot has.
14. What is Heather Beardmore’s attitude to the app?
A. Positive. B. Negative. C. Skeptical. D. Indifferent.

Dear cousin,
Long time no see! It has been almost a year ever since you move to London. I miss you a lot. I’m writing the letter to ask you for help. As you know, I am eager to be a photographer like you, so I asked my parents to buy me the camera last week. But he told me I wouldn’t concentrate on my schoolwork if I got one. Oh, my God! What can I make them trust me? I’m not a kid any longer, but I can control myself. What’s worse, I have promised that I will take photo for the school’s newspaper in next month. When asking by my classmates, I will be absolutely embarrassed. Therefore, would you like to lend me some money? If you’d like, I will return it as soon as possibly.
Yours Sincerely
1.move→moved
2.the→a
3.he→they
4.What→How
5.but→and
6.photo→photos
7.去掉in
8.asking→asked
9.在if you’d like后加to
10.possibly→possible
代指上一句提到的“my parents”,应该用they,而不是he。故将he改为they。
由by可知,句子用被动语态,句子遵循主将从现的原则,when引导的时间状语从句应为“When I am asked by my classmates”,状语从句中主语和主句主语一致,且从句中有be动词时,可省略从句中的主语和be动词,因此省略为“When asked by my classmates”,故将asking改为asked。
you’d是you would的缩写,would like to do是固定短语,意为“愿意做某事”,此处本来是If you’d like to lend me some money,为了避免重复,省略lend me some money,故在if you’d like后加to。

One Possible Version
Dear Tom,
Knowing that you need to take online courses because of the pandemic, I’m writing to offer some useful suggestions on how to improve your study efficiency.
To begin with, when taking online courses, you are supposed to stay away from electronic devices, which may distract your attention all the time. Keeping a distance with them will help you focus on your lessons more easily. In addition, it is a good idea to make a study schedule, so that you can make better use of your time. Last but not least, why not keep a frequent communication with your teachers and classmates even though you can not meet them face to face. The more you communicate with them, the less problem you will have, which can save a lot of time.
Hopefully, these suggestions will be of great help to you. Take good care of yourself during the pandemic.
Yours,
LiHua

B. Thorpe’s success was no guarantee of a better life.
C Thorpe’s career brought him both gains and losses.

Today’s journalists face modern challenges. Online media platforms are springing up. And the lowly newspaper — and its reporters — are fighting money, tech, and distrust issues.
D
15. What is the best title for the text?
A. Effective Measures Against COVID-19
B. Global Cooperation Against COVID-19
C. Doctors — Heroes who Fight COVID-19
D. Docdot — A Mobile App that Helps Doctor
