The Mississippi teacher said she’s lost about 150 pounds since 2008, and has fulfilled a longtime dream — to run and finish the New York City(NYC) Marathon. “It was a dream that came true. I’ve been wanting to do it for 12 years,” Barnes said. Barnes has come a long way over the past decade. At one point, she weighed nearly 300 pounds. “I did have a big setback around 2018, but I got myself together and persevered (坚持不懈) and got with it again,” she said. Running has been an essential part for Barnes. She has so far run many half marathons and four full marathons. “I can say my life is definitely better, not only for getting mentally and physically healthy but for meeting incredible people along,” Barnes said of her experience with running. Although it wasn’t her first marathon, Barnes said the NYC Marathon was still a challenging run. At mile 18, she said she started having “sharp back spasms (痉挛)”, but despite it all, she would not exchange the experience for anything. “The goal might not be exactly what you want, but you will persevere through it and try your best to reach the end goal.” In the end, Barnes completed the NYC Marathon with a final time of 6 hours, 58 minutes and 53 seconds. “I credit everyone for my achievements. The crowds are simply amazing. And I’m also inspired by the people I’ve encountered. Believe in yourself that you can do it, and start with small achievable and measurable goals. Find something you like to do and something that inspires and motivates you,” she said. Today, Barnes runs about five days a week and does both strength and cross training. She plans on running again soon, setting her sights on a half marathon in Arizona next February and running in all 50 states with her husband. She and her husband also hope to run the NYC Marathon together next year. 4. What does the first paragraph mainly talk about? A. Barnes managed to lose weight via surgery. B. Warm-hearted and optimistic. D. Strong-willed and ambitious. C With an increasing demand and numerous challenges concerning traditional coffee agriculture, there is a pressing need for alternative ways of producing coffee. Due to the high demand for coffee, more land is required, leading to deforestation (滥伐森林) — particularly in sensitive areas of rainforest. VTT is developing coffee production through plant cells in its laboratory in Finland. “This project has been part of our overall job to look for the environmentally friendly biotechnological solutions to daily foods that are conventionally produced by agriculture. For this, we use many different hosts, such as microbes (微生物) and plant cells,” says research team leader, Dr Heiko Rischer from VTT. The work started by initiating (创立) coffee cell cultures and establishing respective cell lines. In terms of smell and taste, the trained sensory panel and analytical examination found nothing divergent when comparing the lab’s coffee to ordinary coffee. “Our coffee is so real that it is hard to tell it from the conventional one. Coffee making is an art and involves many processes. Our work provides the basis for such work,” says Rischer. The experience of drinking the very first cup was exciting. Rischer estimates expanding their production is still years away. Growing plant cells requires specific expertise when it is time to improve the process. And the coffee produced in lab conditions should first be approved as Novel Food by the European Commission before being marketed. “Therefore, that’s what we need to devote ourselves to next in the project,” says Rischer. “That said, we have proved that coffee produced in our lab can be real.” The true impact of the project will happen through companies that are willing to rethink food material production and start driving commercial applications. VTT supports large enterprises and small companies in adopting opportunities in their product development. 8. What is the mission of VTT? A. Finding alternatives to coffee. B. Achieving sustainable food production. C. Protecting the areas of rainforest. D. Developing biotechnology in agriculture. 9. What does the underlined word “divergent” in paragraph 3 mean? A. Rernarkable. B. Original. C. Unpleasant. D. Different. 10. What may the project focus on in the following stage? A. Improving the flavour. B. Increasing the production. C. Gaining official approval. D. Cooperating with companies. 11. Which of the following can be the best title for the text? A. Lab- grown Coffee Became a Reality B. Coffee Production Is Facing Challenges C. VVT Met with Success in Novel Food D. Agriculture Is Undergoing a Transformation D It is not just the environment and the economy that are threatened by a warmer climate, but also culture and traditions around the world. Researchers at Lund University in Sweden have mapped what little is known about how climate change is gradually destroying local knowledge and cultural heritage. “We risk losing the memory of native people’s ways of life without this type of documentation,” says Guy Jackson at Lund University, one of the authors of a literature study. One conclusion of the study is that cultural heritage is primarily seen as something of material value, such as a historic building, and the loss is seen as a potential future problem, even though there is evidence that it is already happening. Focusing on material losses means that important traditions and knowledge systems are overlooked. “There are also many non-material losses that are valuable for both individual identity and group identity,” says Guy Jackson. The study shows a clear connection between loss of native cultural heritage and changes in the natural environment. For example, songs and working methods change when groups lose traditions linked to a physical location. One scientific article points out that identity is closely linked to the environment, “ Inuit people (因纽特人) in Canada are people of sea ice. If there is no. more sea ice, how can they be people of sea ice?” Loss of traditions and cultural heritage can make it more difficult to deal with climate change and weaken social togetherness, as people lose touch with traditional ways of life. It also raises the question whether we can expect native people to protect and preserve rainforests and other ecosystems. The researchers hope that the literature study can read to more targeted research. They want to see a larger focus on how to handle, minimize and tackle future losses. “Science should contribute by developing practical solutions and strategies that help with adaptation to the losses that have already happened,” Guy Jackson concludes. 12. What can we learn from the first two paragraphs? A. Climate change causes cultural loss. B. The economy affects the environment. C. Cultural loss is a current problem. D. The native people are being forgotten. 13. What does the study show about the loss of native cultural heritage? A. It is seriously overestimated by scientists. B. It has brought great damage to Canadians. C. It has transformed global working methods. D. It is closely related to environmental changes. 14. What is paragraph 5 mainly about concerning the loss of traditions and cultural heritage? A. Its natural origins. B. Its negative results. C. Its potential reasons. D. Its effective solutions. 15. What is the main idea of the text? A. The unknown threats to the local knowledge. B. The practical solutions to some cultural issues. C. The climate change’s effect on culture and traditions. D. The various losses of important culture and traditions. Whether you’re heading out for a day trip or a quick weekend getaway (短期休假), we will share some travel tips in this guide to help you make your experience more enjoyable. ·Think about how you want to travel. ___16___ Sometimes it means the most enjoyable. Together with four of his friends, Jack, Dan, Carson and Mali, we were excited to check out the challenging track. We’d see three waterfalls, and a volcanic crater. Stretching over eight kilometers, there were no steps on the track—just muddy paths formed on the rock face by other hikers. Climbing upstream, the journey was not for the faint-hearted (胆小的). We had to climb through thick roots and overgrown vegetation. But I knew the view from the top would be incredible. Finally, after an hour and a half, we stopped for our final rest before the peak. “I’m going to check it out!” Austin said. “I’ll join you” I replied, eager to see the top. Racing up the last stretch, I felt excited as I walked over to the edge of the final waterfall where I turned my camera on. When I moved closer to the edge to get a better look, my foot suddenly gave way on a wet rock, sending me falling feet-first over the edge. I desperately reached out to hang on to any rocks but I couldn’t get one as I fell to the bottom 15 meters below, scraping (刮) against rocks as I went. As I fell, it felt like time stood still. “Was I going to be badly hurt?” I thought. In a moment of clarity (清醒) before I reached the bottom, I twisted my body to the side and tucked (蜷缩) myself in a ball. It was a position I’d learned in volleyball training, aimed at reducing the impact of a fall. Landing in the water with a huge splash, after around 20 seconds I managed to lift my head out, but struggled to breath and I could taste blood. “I’ve got to get myself out,” I realized, walking out to reach the edge of the pool as my visions became unclear. Holding the rocks tightly, I felt pain tore through my body and blood flowed from deep wounds on my left arm and left bottom. Moments later, Austin arrived and raced down the track. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ I was airlifted to a waiting ambulance, then rushed to the hospital. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$ 邓州一高2024年秋期高一年级第二次月考 英语试题 (试卷满分150分, 考试时间120分钟) 注意事项: 1. 1. B. She and her husband also hope to run the NYC Marathon together next year.(她计划很快再次跑步,她的目标是明年2月在亚利桑那州参加半程马拉松比赛,并与丈夫一起跑遍所有50个州。 D。 C With an increasing demand and numerous challenges concerning traditional coffee agriculture, there is a pressing need for alternative ways of producing coffee. Agriculture Is Undergoing a Transformation 【答案】8. B 9. D 10. C 11. 根据第二段中的“This project has been part of our overall job to look for the environmentally friendly biotechnological solutions to daily foods that are conventionally produced by agriculture.(这个项目是我们整体工作的一部分,寻找环保的生物技术解决方案,以解决传统农业生产的日常食品)”可知,VTT的使命是实现可持续食品生产。 根据倒数第二段中的“And the coffee produced in lab conditions should first be approved as Novel Food by the European Commission before being marketed.(在实验室条件下生产的咖啡在上市前应首先被欧盟委员会批准为新型食品)”和“Therefore, that’s what we need to devote ourselves to next in the project(因此,这是我们下一步在项目中需要投入的)”可知,在实验室条件下生产的咖啡在出售前需要首先被欧盟委员会批准为新型食品,这是研究者们在项目中接下来需要致力做的事情,所以该项目接下来可能会重点关注获得官方批准。 通读全文,尤其是第二段“VTT is developing coffee production through plant cells in its laboratory in Finland.(VTT正在芬兰的实验室里通过植物细胞开发咖啡生产)”和第三段“In terms of smell and taste, the trained sensory panel and analytical examination found nothing divergent when comparing the lab’s coffee to ordinary coffee.(在嗅觉和味觉方面,经过训练的感官小组和分析检查发现,实验室的咖啡与普通咖啡相比没有任何不同)”可知,本文主要讲的是芬兰国家技术研究中心的研究人员已经在实验室里培育出了一种咖啡,它的气味和口感与传统咖啡无异,使咖啡的可持续性生产成为现实,因此最好的题目是A选项“Lab- grown Coffee Became a Reality(实验室种植的咖啡成为现实)”。故选A。 D It is not just the environment and the economy that are threatened by a warmer climate, but also culture and traditions around the world. If there is no. more sea ice, how can they be people of sea ice?” Loss of traditions and cultural heritage can make it more difficult to deal with climate change, and weaken social togetherness, as people lose touch with traditional ways of life. 12. A 13. D 14. B 15. Too much consideration on short journeys is not worth it. If you’ve got a preference for a certain means of transport, it’s often worth traveling that way for short distances, even if it ends up taking you a little longer. ·___17___ Some cities, like NYC, are quite walkable. Others simply aren’t. In Amsterdam, the best way to get about is by bike — whether you use the city’s shared bikes or rent one from your hotel. In Southeast Asia, you’d better rent a scooter ___18___ So don’t bother to find the so-called one-size-fits-all answer. ·Try all the available options. If you’ re not sure about the best means of transport for you, experience them all. See what catching the subway is like, try cycling or riding the bus. It’s hard to predict what will be the most convenient. LA has a low- cost public transport network but car-pooling is cheaper, and scooters are the best for getting around West Hollywood. ___19___ ·Don’t rely on map apps. Map apps are useful, but they don’t take into account the possibility of packed subways, queues for taxis and the heat of a train in summer. ___20___ So don’t assume something is a 30-minute drive just because a map app says so — by the time you’ve driven halfway, you might still have another 30 minutes to go. A Don’t limit your choices. B. It takes time to find the best. C. Study the city you will travel to. D. You won’t know until you try them all. E. What works here might not work there. F. The best doesn’t necessarily mean the fastest. G. Besides, they are a bit behind the real traffic time. F 17. C 18. E 19. D 20. 【16题详解】 根据后文“Sometimes it means the most enjoyable. Too much consideration on short journeys is not worth it. If you’ve got a preference for a certain means of transport, it’s often worth traveling that way for short distances, even if it ends up taking you a little longer.(有时它意味着最愉快的。 【17题详解】 本空是段落的小标题,根据本段内容“Some cities, like NYC, are quite walkable. Others simply aren’t. In Amsterdam, the best way to get about is by bike — whether you use the city’s shared bikes or rent one from your hotel. In Southeast Asia, you’d better rent a scooter 根据上文“Some cities, like NYC, are quite walkable. “I’ll join you,” I replied, eager to see the top. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】范文 Moments later, Austin arrived and raced down the track. I struggled to communicate with him because of my difficulty with breathing. Austin refused to leave my side and desperately called out for help. When two hikers rushed to my aid, relief flooded through me. Phoning a rescue team, they held my hands tightly and told me help was on its way. Soon after, our friends found us and did their best to keep me calm. When the helicopter arrived 45 minutes later, the crew carried me onto a stretcher to safety. I was airlifted to a waiting ambulance, then rushed to the hospital. There, the medical staff gave me a thorough examination and I had surgery four days later. “You’re lucky you landed the way you did,” one surgeon said after the surgery, adding if I hadn’t reacted that way, my injuries could have been a lot worse. Thankfully, after two weeks in hospital, I had recovered, and I was discharged. Although my accident was painful, it taught me that what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. After a brush with death, I’m determined to live every day to the fullest. 词汇激活 行为类 决定:be determined to /decide to 死里逃生:a brush with death / have a narrow escape 拒绝:refuse/decline 情绪类 拼命:desperately/ tooth and nail 冷静:keep calm/calm down 【点睛】[高分句型1] When the helicopter arrived 45 minutes later, the crew carried me onto a stretcher to safety.
