What do English speakers learn as a foreign language? What are their opinions on learning foreign languages? Read on and find out.
Many British people are poor at speaking foreign languages. Last year, I spent my holiday in Spain and Italy, and in both countries I saw British tourists not even trying to say “hello”, “please” or “thank you” in the local language, which I think is really rude. I’ve never lived in a foreign country and I’m not good at learning languages, but I do think it’s important to make an effort with them when you’re traveling abroad.
Martin
I hated languages at school, but as an adult I’ve started learning two foreign languages and found that I really enjoy them. Two years ago I started learning French, just as a hobby, and six months ago I started learning Hindi (印地语) because my husband is from India and next month. I’m going over there to meet some of his family members. It’s difficult, but really interesting.
Liz
I’m fourteen years old and I go to school in Manchester in the north of England. I study two foreign languages, Spanish and French. They’re not my favorite subjects, but sometimes they can be quite interesting. But I don’t like all the grammar—I can’t get my head round all those rules. When I went to Spain on holiday last month, I was able to ask for drinks in a restaurant and also understood a little bit of Spanish TV—I was quite proud of myself.
Paul
I teach French and Spanish at a school in London, so I can speak both languages well. I like my job, although sometimes it can be a bit frustrating. It would be good if the students cared more about foreign languages. Many of them think it unnecessary to learn a foreign language since almost everyone can speak English.
Lousie
31. Why is Liz learning Hindi?
A. To get a job in India.
B. To finish college.
C. To communicate with her husband’s family.
32. Which part of foreign languages does Paul find difficult?
A. Reading. B. Grammar. C. Speaking.
33. What does Louise do?
A. college student. B. A tour guide. C. A teacher.
34. In Louise’s opinion, British people don’t want to learn foreign languages probably because ________.
A. most people can speak English
B. they are too busy with their work
C. they seldom travel abroad
35. Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?
A Martin hates to speak the local language while travelling.
B. Liz started learning French earlier than Hindi.
C. Paul can order drinks in Spanish.

Inventions usually make a big difference to people’s lives. Do you have any great inventions at home? Do they help you a lot in your life or bring you much fun? Here are some of the most useful inventions in families according to a survey.
The most helpful and creative invention for kids is the reading pen. With the specially-designed pen, kids find it convenient and fun to learn. Little kids can learn a lot including story-telling, poems and music. They start learning by touching the contents in the books with the pen. This way kids can learn by themselves. They are also great helpers for primary school students after school.
Mopping robots (扫地机器人) are popular with people who are too busy to do housework. They are more popular with office ladies. They can help people clean dirt, dust and hair easily. With the help of them, people don’t need to spend much time on housework. They can enjoy a more relaxing life after work.
As for old people, an electric foot basin (电动洗脚盆) is the best invention. It’s a good choice to buy one for your grandparents. It can help keep their blood pressure normal and improve blood circulation (循环). The special basin can keep the water warm. So washing feet with it will help old people become healthier and more relaxed.

D
When I was in Grade 1 in high school, I saw a kid from my class walking home from school. His name was Carl. It looked like he was carrying all of his books. I thought to myself, “Why would anyone bring home all his books on Friday? He must be a fool.” I had quite a weekend planned (parties and a football game with my friend tomorrow afternoon), so I shook my head and went on. Suddenly, a crowd of kids ran toward him, knocking all his books out of his arms and making him fall down on the mess. His glasses went flying, and I saw them fall on the grass about ten feet from him. He felt low and terrible. As he touched around looking for his glasses, I ran over to him. I handed him his glasses and said, “Those guys are awful. They really should be educated to be better.”
He smiled at me and said, “Hey, thanks!” I helped him pick up his books and asked him where he lived. Then I knew he lived near me and he had studied in a private school before. We talked all the way home, and I carried his books. I found him a pretty cool kid actually. I asked him if he wanted to play football on Saturday with me and my friends. He said yes. The more I got to know Carl, the better I liked him. And my friends thought the same of him. Over the next two years, Carl and I have been best friends. One day, he told me he had to prepare a speech for graduation (毕业). I could see that he was nervous about his speech. So, I hugged him and said, “Hey, big boy, you’ll be great!” He looked at me with a real grateful look and said thanks.
As he started his speech, he cleared his throat, and began, “Graduation is the time to thank those who helped you get through those hard times. Your parents, your teachers, your sisters and brothers, maybe a coach...but mostly your friends. I am here to tell all of you that being a friend to someone is the best gift you can give him or her. I am going to tell you a story.”
I just looked at my friend surprisingly as he told the story of the first day we met. He had planned to kill himself over the weekend at that time. He mentioned how he had cleaned out the lock in his heart. He looked at me again and gave me a little smile. “Thankfully, I was saved. My friend saved me from doing the silly.” He continued. I heard my own breath go through the crowd as this handsome, popular boy told us all about his weakest moment. I saw his Mom and Dad looking at me and smiling that same grateful smile. Not until that moment did I realize the meaning of their smiles.
Never underestimate the power of your behaviors. With one small action, you can change a person’s life. For better or for worse.

Music is an international language all over the world. Popular music in America is what every student likes. Students carry small music players with earphones and listen to music when they aren’t busy before class, after class, and at lunchtime. Students with cars buy loud speakers and play music in a loud voice as they drive on the street to spread it. In this way a wide range of people can hear it. Adult drivers listen to music on the car radio as they drive to work. They also listen to the news about sports, the weather, politics(政治) and activities of American people.
Most of the radio broadcasts are music.
Pop or popular music singers make much money. They make CDs or tapes which radio stations use in every state. Once the popular singer is heard all over the country, young people buy his or her tape. Wherever the singer goes, many of the young fans make every chance to support him or her. In this way the singer can be a star all over the country.
There are other kinds of music that are important to Americans. One is called folk music. It has stories about the common life of Americans. Another is called western or country music. This was started by cowboys who would sing at night to the cows they were watching. Today, any music about country life and the love between a country boy and his girl is called western or country music. You can discover classical music in the concert halls. It’s easy to imagine what one could do with this lucky ___16___, but would this money actually make someone happy? Based on the ___17___ of several lottery winners, it probably wouldn’t. Suddenly coming into huge sums of money can ___18___ a person’s life in unexpected and sometimes unpleasant ways. For example, William Post won $16.2 million in a lottery in 1998. Within three months, he was back to be broke (破产) ___19___ he spent a lot on worthless business. But William felt much happier without any money.
Then there was Callie Rogers, a British teenager who won $3 million in 2003. She treated her family and friends to lavish gifts and bought ___20___ designer clothes. After six years, Callie changed back to a poor teenager and ___21___ that money didn’t make her happy.
It’s found that these lottery winners may ___22___ know how to handle so much money and do not get advice from financial experts. They waste money on things they don’t need and ___23___ too much money to friends and relatives.
Researchers find that people are happy when they are able to pay for their ___24___ needs, such as food, clothes, a safe place to live, and health care. Expensive things only make people happy temporarily (暂时). Spending time with family and donating reasonable amounts of money to charities make people ____25____ than money does.
