Writing poems is a wonderful way of sharing what we’re thinking or how we feel. Would you like to be a poet? Here’re some useful instructions for you to learn how to write different kinds of poems.
Rhyme (押韵诗)
Rhyme refers to the same last sound made at the end of the words. This doesn’t mean they need to share the same spelling. For example, here are some lines from “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little star”:
Twinkle, twinkle, little star,
How I wonder what you are!
Up above the world so high,
Like a diamond in the sky.
In it, “star” and “are” rhyme with each other. They share the same sound /ɑː(r)/, but they are spelt differently. Remember that some poems rhyme while others do not.
Cinquain
A cinquain is a poem of five tines. It doesn’t rhyme. We’ll write one adding one more word to each line. Line one has one word. Line two has two words. Line three has three words. . .
INSTRUCTIONS.
1. Write the name of a person, place, or thing.
2. Think of words that describe your choice.
3. On a different page, write your cinquain. And write the words on five lines using one more word on each line.
Acrostic Poems
An acrostic doesn’t usually rhyme. Going down, the first letter of every line spells a word. This word is the subject of the poem. Each line going across describes that subject.
INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Choose someone who is special to you.
2. Write the person’s name down the left side of the paper.
3. Write a poem about the person. The first word of each line should begin with a letter from the person’s name.
Senses Poems
Our senses help us learn about and understand the world. The five senses are taste, touch, smell, hearing and sight. Let’s work each of the five senses into a poem.

Rhyme (押韵诗)
Rhyme refers to the same last sound made at the end of the words. This doesn’t mean they need to share the same spelling. For example, here are some lines from “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little star”:
Twinkle, twinkle, little star,
How I wonder what you are!
Up above the world so high,
Like a diamond in the sky.
In it, “star” and “are” rhyme with each other. They share the same sound /ɑː(r)/, but they are spelt differently. Remember that some poems rhyme while others do not.
Cinquain
A cinquain is a poem of five tines. It doesn’t rhyme. We’ll write one adding one more word to each line. Line one has one word. Line two has two words. Line three has three words. . .

2. Think of words that describe your choice.
3. On a different page, write your cinquain. And write the words on five lines using one more word on each line.
Acrostic Poems
An acrostic doesn’t usually rhyme. Going down the first letter of every line spells a word. This word is the subject of the poem. Each line going across describes that subject.
