2025 is the Year of the Wood Snake in the Chinese zodiac(生肖), starting from January 29th, 2025, and ending on February 16th, 2026. In Chinese culture, the snake is associated with (与……有关联)wisdom, magic, and change. People born in the Year of the Snake are believed to be wise, active, and charming(富有魅力的).
2025’s snake year is special for several reasons. Firstly, it is a rare(罕见的) “double spring and leap month(闰月)” year. There will be two Start of Spring solar terms(节气), one on the sixth day of the first lunar month (February 3rd, 2025) and the other on the seventeenth day of the twelfth lunar month (February 4th, 2026). Besides, there is a leap June in 2025, which is regarded as(被认为是) a sign of yin-yang imbalance(失衡) in traditional Chinese calendar. Moreover, the heavenly stems(天干) “Yi” of the year 2025 belongs to wood, and the earthly branches(地支) “Si” belongs to fire, forming the image of a green snake.
According to traditional beliefs, there are four types of people who need to pay special attention in 2025. The first type is those in their “本命年” (benmingnian, the year of one’s birth sign), especially(尤其是) those born in 1977, 1989, 2001, and 2013, with 1989-born people facing the highest risk as it will be their third “本命年”. The second type is those with a lack(缺乏)of the fire element in their five elements(五行), as they may be more weak during this year of strong fire energy. The third type includes those with low fortune (运气) in recent years, such as those with poor career progress, health problems and so on. The fourth type is people whose age is a multiple of nine in 2025 (e.g., 29, 39, 49 years old), as these ages are traditionally considered important turning points in life.
During the Year of the Snake in 2025, there will be all kinds of traditional ways to celebrate. People will decorate their homes with red lanterns and couplets(对联), and families will gather for big meals. Temple fairs(庙会) will also be held, exciting traditional performances like dragon and snake dances. In general, the whole society will be filled with an atmosphere(气氛) of hope and new beginnings, with people making wishes and plans for the coming year, looking forward to good health, career success, and family harmony(和睦).

No matter where you live, you may hear about the natural disasters(灾害). They bring many serious problems to people in disaster areas. They become ill, homeless and some of them even die in the disasters.
Japan is located in East Asia, but it is an island in the North Pacific Ocean. Japan has more than1,000 islands, but there are four main islands. Lots of rains fall in Japan at a lot of times of a year, especially in summer. There is a rainy season in early summer, and typhoons hit parts of the country every year during late summer.
The heavy rains usually destroy(摧毁) the crops and plants. What's worse, the rains usually cause huge floods. Floods in Japan can take away many things, including many people's lives. A Japanese housing developer(开发商) recently invented a“ flood- resistant(抵抗的) house”. It can not only keep water out of the house during floods but also float off(漂浮) the ground.
Because of floods, the loss(损失)of housing is a difficult problem all over the world. While engineers are trying to find solutions, few ways are useful. Now, the Japanese housing developer tells the public that he came up with(想出)an answer the other day. It can keep people's homes from getting flooded. Their new “ flood- resistant house” was recently on a popular Japanese TV show and received much attention online.
According to engineers, most houses will be in the flood when water reaches the windows, but their“ flood- resistant house” can float up to five metres above the ground, so water will not reach the windows, and everything else is closed in the house safely.

Great news! Pandas are no longer in danger. They are on the road of recovery (恢复). Back in the 1980s, there were as few as 1,114 pandas in China. But the most recent survey in 2014 showed that there were over 1,864 pandas live in the wild.
Since 1981, the Chinese government has been working with World Wildlife Fund (WWF) to save the world’s most famous bears and their homes. They build nature parks which help protect nearly 1,300 wild pandas by giving them space to live and bamboo to eat. But the bamboo forests are getting smaller, so pandas are still losing their homes. The WWF warned that climate (气候) change could also destroy (毁掉) more than 35% of the animals’ homes, so there won’t enough places to live for them in the next years. The future for pandas in the long term is not yet clear. But one thing is for sure: we must do more efforts (努力) to protect our lovely pandas.
66. What are the great news?
