Beijing is known as a large and busy city. But if you walk down one of its main streets into a small alley (巷), you may find something different—Beijing hutongs!
People say they live in hutongs, but in fact, they live in the buildings on one side of the hutongs. Hutongs are the alleys between houses.
Beijing has been China’s capital city for over 700 years. As the city grows, the number of its people and houses is becoming larger and larger. Now there are more than 6,000 hutongs in Beijing. If all of them were connected end to end, the line would not be shorter than the Great Wall.
There are several interesting Beijing hutongs. For example, Nanluogu Lane is the busiest hutong in Beijing and it is about 787 meters long. And on the west of Nanluogu Lane is Mao’er Lane. There are many great and famous places along this hutong. Fangjia Hutong is 676 meters long. There are many small coffee shops and restaurants. Many young artists like to go there and look for creative works.
Beijing people love hutongs because they get a lot of fun and relaxation there. In the hutongs, people can enjoy the sunshine, sing songs and play chess with their neighbours. They can talk with others and listen to some stories.
Hutongs are not only a symbol of Beijing’s culture, but also an important part of China’s national treasures. So people try to keep them well as historical places of interest.

27. What’s the writer’s purpose in writing this passage?

Mary began to like her life here. Every morning, she went outside after breakfast and spent most of the day in the grounds. The cold wind brought pink to her face. And she finished all of her food each evening. She was much healthier. After dinner, she liked sitting near the fire and talking to Martha.
“Why does Mr. Craven hate the locked garden?” Mary asked once.
“It was Mrs. Craven’s garden and she loved it. She looked after the flowers together with Mr. Craven. No gardeners were allowed in.”
“But what happened?” Mary asked.
“There was an old tree in the garden with a branch (树枝) like a seat. Mrs. Craven often sat there, reading and talking. One day, the branch broke and she fell down. She was badly hurt and died soon. Mr. Craven locked the garden and never talked about it.”
Mary seldom felt sorry for anyone, but now she understood how sad her uncle must be.
The wind roared around the house, and the doors and windows banged. Mary listened, and through the noise she thought that she heard a child crying.
“Can you hear someone crying?” she asked Martha
Martha seemed pretty nervous. “No,” she answered. “It’s only the wind or the servant who works in the kitchen. She’s got a toothache. Perhaps she’s crying.”
At the very moment, the crying sound could be heard again in the corridors. “There!” said Mary. “I told you so! It is someone crying—and it isn’t from the kitchen.”
“I’m going to check if she needs any help.” After the words, Martha shut the door and left the room quickly.
Feeling strange, Mary decided to explore (探索) the house. She went quietly along corridors and up and down stairs. In the silence of the house, she heard again the sound of a child crying. She stopped to listen at a door, but then another door opened and Mrs. Medlock came out. “What are you doing here?” she said, and she took Mary by the arm and pulled her away, “Get back to your room at once.”

①After nearly a decade of enduring the busy and noisy life in Las Vegas, Nevada, my family and I reached a decision to have a more environmentally-friendly lifestyle and a slower pace. We all agreed that moving to the countryside would be the perfect solution.
②After some searching, we found a home in Yucca, Arizona, a small town with a population of less than 1,000 people. However, when I called to ask about the condition of the house, I was surprised to know that there was no electricity available in the area. At first, I almost denied the idea of living here, but then I realized that it was an excellent chance to go green. After careful consideration, we decided to move in on Thanksgiving Day.
③Living off the grid (电线) has been an important adjustment for us over the past four months. One of the most educational lessons we have learned is teaching my kids the importance of conservation. They used to take water, power, and gas for granted, but now they realize it is necessary to save them. We have made changes such as taking shorter showers, and turning off the water while brushing our teeth. Another thing we have learned is to take up other sustainable practices like recycling, growing our own vegetables, and reusing daily objects instead of throwing them away.
④…
⑤In a word, our decision has not only helped us to protect the environment but also given us a chance to experience a slow life. It has been positive for our family. We hope that even after our children move out, they will continue to keep the habits they have developed while living off the grid.
32. Why did the writer and his family decide to move to the countryside?
A. They wished to experience a busy and noisy life.
B. They wanted to live a green life.
C. They liked to live a life without electricity.
D. They don’t have enough money to live in the city.
33. What does this underlined word “denied” mean?
A. refused B. liked C. forgot D. understood
34. How did the writer develop Paragraph 3?
A. By showing changes. B. By making requests.
C. By giving suggestions. D. By sharing reasons.
35. What will the writer most probably write about in Paragraph 4?
A. What were the bad things of the country life?
B. How did they live in a slower way?
C. Why did the children move out?
D. How much did they miss the city life?
E
①We all have trouble, and often make mistakes. However, many of us find it hard to admit (承认) them to others. So most of us would keep the problems to ourselves. We believe that our trouble and mistakes show our weakness, and we are afraid to let others think we are not good enough.
②The good news is that our worries about the negative (负面的) evaluations (评价) from others may not seem as serious as we imagine. A research suggests that we see our act of showing weakness negatively, but others may not think so. And researchers call this the “beautiful mess effect (效应)”. That means ________.
③This effect can stop us from sharing our true feelings and needs. But sharing feelings can actually have many advantages. For example, studies show that sharing personal information about oneself may help build closeness and trust, while saying sorry sincerely could repair a broken relationship.
④Some researchers wanted to know how we could deal with the “beautiful mess effect”. Their new experiments (实验) suggest that being self-compassionate (自我同情) can help.
⑤In the study, researchers invited 340 university students who had different levels of self-compassion to take part in four experiments. In one of them, students were asked to imagine themselves admitting that they’d made a big mistake. At the same time, they also imagined another person admitting the same mistake. Then, students needed to evaluate this act: Did they see it as an act of showing one’s courage or weakness?
⑥The study showed that students with low self-compassion evaluated their own act more negatively. Highly self-compassionate students, on the other hand, were not much influenced by the “beautiful mess effect”. They were more likely to see admitting mistakes as courage. In a word, self-compassion helps us evaluate our act of showing weakness more fairly, stopping us from being too hard on ourselves.
⑦Luckily, our level of self-compassion is not fixed and can be raised if we want to. If we love ourselves, we can become more comfortable with showing our weakness. This practice can improve our relationships.
36. Why do people keep their problems to themselves according to the passage?
A. To make fewer mistakes.
B. To get their problems right.
C. To protect their personal information.
D. To keep away from negative evaluations.
37. Which sentence can be put in ________?
A. we may not be such a mess as we think
B. other people always think highly of us
C. we need to share our true feelings and needs
D. we shouldn’t deal with “beautiful mess effect”
38. Which of the following is TRUE?
A. It will be harder to share our weakness if we love ourselves.
B. All the students in the experiment see admitting mistakes as courage.
C. Sharing true feelings helps to build a better relationship with others.
D. People with high self-compassion were more influenced by the “beautiful mess effect”.

_________
Today, the popularity of walking in the field has risen around the world. But in the UK, it becomes a problem. More than 100 musicians, actors and writers wrote to the government, “In the books we write, the songs we sing, the art we make, we celebrate the important connection that we feel with nature. But that connection is stopped by the fences (围栏) that surround (围绕) much of England’s land, keeping people from walking free.”
Although in 2000, a law was passed to allow people to walk around 8% of England’s countryside, some people still say this isn’t good enough. However, others point out that there are businesses that need to keep the land private (私有的).
YES!
NO!
Nowadays it is important for people to take a walk outdoors—for their mental and physical health. It encourages people and brings them pleasure and relaxation.
Yet this space is not enough and is now surrounded by fences. To get closer to nature, most people have to travel for miles. Everyone should be able to get close to nature easily. Blue sky, flying birds and green tree-lined paths should not belong to any private organization or person. But the truth is that such a small number of people own such huge amounts of land. Among every eight British houses, one has no gardens. This isn’t fair.
The land isn’t just for people’s enjoyment or health. For many people, it means the family’s whole-year income. After all, farmers need fields to keep their animals, like sheep or bulls, to make a living.
Also, walkers do not always show their respect. Some walkers leave gates open, throw rubbish everywhere, scare off birds and stand over plants. In fact, many people are not really looking for a connection with the wild. They just want a short walk with the nice view.

Have you ever looked at your parents and wished they were healthier? You’re not the only one. We did a survey of some kids. The survey shows that 46% of them worry about their parents’ health, and 69% of the kids would like their parents to make changes to be healthier.
Here are some tips on talking to your parents about their healthy habits.
Create a list
Try to remember what makes you think about this topic. Is there an unhealthy thing you’d like to see them stop doing, or do less often? Is there a healthy habit like exercising or eating fruit and vegetables that you would like them to do more often? Get your list together.
Practice how to say it
Changing can be hard. And it’s not always easy to hear that someone you love thinks you need to do it. So you’ll want to bring up this topic in just the right way. If your parents wanted you to make a change, how would you like them to ask? A gentle and caring way often works best.
Make a decision together
Once you bring up the topic, remember that both you and your parents should agree on what steps to take next. It helps to pick a single goal. It may give them too much pressure if you try to make too many changes all at once.
Cheer them on
As your parents start making changes, tell them you’re proud of them. Things such as a warm hug or a home-made card can be great encouragements to keep them going down the healthy road. What a great way to show how much you care!

④…

D. we shouldn’t deal with “beautiful mess effect”
38. Which of the following is TRUE?
