A broken heart. A sad ending to something. That’s something most of us have experienced, or probably will. After all, it’s part of life. But no question, this experience can be devastating. Sad music can help cheer you up from your broken heart. A recent study from Germany found listening to sad music can trigger your emotions (激发情感). It draws you away from focus on yourself, and possibly towards helping others in need of comfort.
Another experiment, from the University of Kent, found that when people were experiencing sadness, listening to music that was “beautiful but sad” raised their spirits. In fact, it did so when the person was first consciously (有意识地) aware of the situation causing their sadness, and then began listening to the sad music. When people wished that the sad music might help, they found it did.
These findings link with other studies that show accepting your full experience gives you hope. For example, a research from Cornell University found that embracing (拥抱) difficulties about a life experience or new situation, and viewing it as a step towards growth and change, helps you to pass through it.

My name is Black Beauty. I’m a good horse who doesn’t kick or bite people. One day, my owners Squire Gordon and John drove me to go on a long journey. The weather was rainy and windy, but we travelled happily.
We arrived in the town early, but Squire’s business took a long time. We didn’t leave until late afternoon. The wind was blowing, making a terrible sound.
Suddenly we heard a crack, and a huge tree fell across the road in front of us. I stopped still (静止). I was shaking with fear, but I did not turn round or run away.
“We must go back,” said John, “and drive six miles to a wooden bridge.”
When we got there it was nearly dark. There was water on the middle of the bridge, but Squire did not notice and didn’t stop. As soon as my feet touched the bridge, I knew something was wrong. I stopped.
“Go on, Beauty!” said Squire.
John got out and tried to lead me forward. But I refused to go.
Just then a man saw us.
“Stop!” he cried. “The bridge is broken in the middle. If you go on to it, you are all going to drown (淹死) in the river.”
“Thank you, Beauty!” said Squire. “You saved us,” said John.
We turned around and went along the road by the river. It would take us longer time but we were safe.
9. Why did the men and the horse leave the town so late?
A. Because they drove slowly.
B. Because they had fun in the town.
C. Because Squire Gordon spent much time on his business.
D. Because Black Beauty was hurt and got treatment in the town.

C. The horse got his name from his appearance.
D. Squire Gordon’s business was very successful.
12 Which words can best describe the horse?
A. Brave and clever. B. Lovely but lazy.
C. Hardworking and beautiful. D. Friendly but noisy.

There are thousands of kinds of animals in the Amazon rainforest, each coloured differently. Most rainforest animals use their colours for survival.
Some animals use colour to protect themselves from their predators (猎食者). An example is the green iguana (鬣鳞蜥). Young iguanas are bright green and hide among the bright green leaves of the trees where they live. As they grow older, their colour becomes duller. Old iguanas live higher in the trees, where the colours all around are less bright.
Other animals are predators and use colours to hide from their prey. The boa constrictor snake (蟒蛇) is a good example. Some boas are grey or brown, and their colours help them hide on branches. The emerald boa is green and white, so it can easily hide in the leaves. A boa hides in a tree and waits for a bird to fly by. When one does, the boa grabs the bird from the air and then squeezes it to death before eating it.
Colourful frogs can be orange, red, or green. Their bright colours let everybody know where they are. The bright colour warns other animals that the frog is poisonous, so they stay away. These tiny frogs are very poisonous! One frog has enough poison to kill 100 people.
The colours of the rainforest are beautiful to us, but to the animals they are very important. They help the animals survive.
13 In which part of a magazine may we read this?
A. History. B. Culture. C. Arts. D. Nature.
14. What colour is the adult green iguana?
A. Bright green. B. Dull green. C. Grey or brown. D. Green and white.
15. Which animal in the passage is an example of “prey”?
A. Some boas. B. The emerald boa. C. The bird. D. Colourful frogs.
16. How is the passage organized? (P: Paragraph)
A. B. C. D.

Every day, as he sat thinking about his life, he sometimes heard the sound of a coin or two dropping into his cup. One day, the noise was louder than usual. But he didn’t look up. A little later, when he looked into the cup, he could hardly believe what he saw. At the bottom was a big shining diamond ring.
Billy’s first thought was to go to the jewelry’s (珠宝店) and that’s exactly what he did. To his surprise, he was offered $4,000. Was this a mistake? But then he thought about his grandfather. His grandfather always told him to do the right thing. Billy made up his mind. He had better keep the ring and maybe one day its owner would return.
Two days later, a young woman called Sarah came and asked if he had found anything unusual in his cup. Billy reached into his pocket and pulled out the ring. When he saw the smile on Sarah’s face, he knew that he made the right decision. She explained that she forgot putting her ring in her purse (钱包) that day.
