What will life in the future be like? Will it be much better than it is now? And what will we be able to do in 10, 20 or 30 years’ time?
Genetic engineering (基因工程) may help us make the perfect human. Babies may grow up to play basketball like Yao Ming or look like Cecilia Cheung. Also, we may be able to bring the dead back to life. Maybe people will be able to meet and talk with their dead family members.
Over the next 20 to 50 years, it will become harder to tell the difference between humans and machines. Perhaps we will be able to make copies of ourselves, so we will appear to be alive long after we are dead. People may be able to find ways of putting the life of a person into a new body.
Nanobots (纳米机器人) will be important. We will use them when we are sick. For example, when we have a stomachache, we will swallow (吞下) a nanobot and it will travel through our stomach, taking a video of what’s happening there. The video will help the doctor cure us.
In the future, computers may have their feelings. They may be able to think better than us. We may be more and more interested in computers and the internet, spending all our time in front of computers. Perhaps we will forget our real needs. Perhaps we will become super couch potatoes weighing 250 kg!

A study involving 8,500 teenagers from all social backgrounds found that most of them are ignorant when it comes to money. The findings, the first in a series of reports from NatWest that has started a five-year researeh project into teenagers and money, are particularly worrying as this generation of young people is likely to be burdened with greater debts man any before.
University tuition fees (学费) are currently capped at £3,000 annually, but this will be reviewed next year and the Government is under enormous pressure to raise the ceiling.
In the researeh, the teenagers were presented with die terms of four different loans but 76 per cent failed to identify the cheapest. The young people also predicted that they would be earning on average £ 31.000 by the age of 25, although the average salary for those aged 22 to 29 is just £ 17,815. The teenagers expected to be in debt when they finished university or training, although half said that they assumed the debts would be less than £ 10.000. Average debts for graduates are £ 12,363.
Stephen Moir, head of community investment at the Royal Bank of Scotland Group which owns NatWest, said. "The more exposed young people are to financial issues, and the younger they become aware of them, the more likely they are to become responsible, forward-planning adults who manage their finances confidently and effectively."
Ministers are deeply concerned about the financial pressures on teenagers and young people because of student loans and rising housing costs. They have just introduced new lessons in how to manage debts. Nikki Fairweathcr. aged 15. from St Helens, said that she had benefited from lessons on personal finance, but admitted that she still had a lot to learn about money.
28. Which of the following can be found from the five-year researeh project?
A. Students understand personal finances differently.
B. University tuition fees in England have been rising.
C Teenagers tend to overestimate their future earnings.
D. The students' payback ability has become a major issue.
29. The phrase "to raise the ceiling" in paragraph 2 probably means "______".
A. to raise the student loans B. to improve the school facilities
C. to increase the upper limit of the tuition D. to lift the school building roofs
30. According to Stephen Moir, students_______.
A. are too young 10 be exposed 10 financial issues
B. should learn 10 manage their finances wellC- should maintain a positive attitude when facing loans
C. benefit a lot from lessons on personal finance
31. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Many British teenagers do not know money matters well
B. Teenagers in Britain are heavily burdened with debts.
C. Financial planning is a required course at college.
D. Young people should become responsible adults.
C 29. C 30. B 31. A

Kids and science seem to be made for each other!
The basic science is a combination of thought and experiment called the scientific method. It’s where you start with an idea, create a way to prove or disprove your idea, and show what you learned based on facts. Learning to follow this process helps you think logically and carefully. These important thinking skills can be used in many areas of study. To give a child practice with these thinking skills is like giving vitamins (维生素) to a developing mind.
One of the greatest things we can teach our children is to love learning. Learning science is a great way to do so. Children are easy to be interested in science. Because much of science is hands-on (实践), it attracts most children. Nothing makes a child sit up and take notice like the “WOW!” of a great science showing.
Science opens doors to many subjects at school. Building love for science can be helpful in other areas of study. For example, one cannot love science for very long without becoming good at its language-math! So science encourages children to study math. An interest in science is an interest in how things were once understood compared to how they are understood now. Thus studying science lends itself easily to studying history. And after you do an experiment, you need to write a lab report. Therefore, writing becomes an important part of science.
Science is the basic thing for much of our life. The science of farming shows how our food is produced; biomedical science keeps us healthy; even our beds these days are designed according to scientific facts. We almost eat, sleep and breathe with the help of science! When we prepare the next generation of voters, creators and policy makers, it is important to make sure they are not only comfortable but also good at science.
32. What is the text mainly about?
A. How kids can make use of science. B. Why science is important.
C. Why kids should learn science. D. What kids should learn at school.
33. According to Paragraph 2, what does the underlined word “logically” mean?
A. Think very carelessly. B. Think carefully.
C. Think according to a reason. D. Think on your own.
34. If a child works hard at science at school, he/she ________.
A. usually has no time for other subjects.
B. is likely to learn many other subjects well.
C. is usually bad at such subjects like history.
D. usually loses interest in other activities.
35. Which of the following statements would the author agree with?
A. Science is too difficult for children.
B. Children usually consider science boring.
C. Science could make children love learning.
D. Children who can’t think carefully shouldn’t learn science.
C 33. C 34. B 35. C

To give a child practice with these thinking skills is like giving vitamins to a developing mind.(学习遵循这个过程可以帮助你进行逻辑思考和仔细思考。
根据第二段的“It’s where you start with an idea, create a way to prove or disprove your idea, and show what you learned based on facts.(这是你从一个想法开始,创造一种方法来证明或反驳你的想法,并根据事实展示你学到的东西。)”

Over years, there’s one thing I’ve collected more than any other: books. They slowly piled up (堆积) around until I made a decision—to clear away some of them.____36____ But with the possibility for an international move, it seemed unreasonable to keep ones that I wouldn’t be able to carry.
Then what was left were my favorites. Instead of taking over every corner in my home, my collection now includes two organized shelves. ____37____
I have some books set in New York. They take me back to the rush of early morning rides or of summer weekends. My San Francisco collection mainly includes Armistead Maupin’s Tales of the City. I pull them off the shelf when I feel disappointed in the place I now call home, and I let them take me to a happier view of this city.____38____ When I lived there, I never found myself reading books set there. But since I moved away, they’ve become my favorites.
____39____ That’s what my pile of library books mainly have. I enjoy reading about places that I’d hardly want to call home, and I often try to read a novel or two ‘set in a location I’m going to. After all, the point of reading is exploration; it is a form of travel, a way to go somewhere new through written words.
The books that have earned their place on my shelf, however, are those I share a history with. ____40____ While you can’t always go home, a book can bring you there.
A. It was really a painful activity.
B. Then there’s my row of Miami books.
C. I still read books that are set in places I haven’t lived in, of course.
D. I didn’t mean to keep the books connected with my previous experience.
E. I never know when I’ll find myself missing a place, so I stay with the books.
F. When reading them, I’m taken back to places where I once lived and the person I was.
G. With this new organization, I could see most books are novels set in places I’ve lived.
A 37. G 38. B 39. C 40. F
根据上文“They slowly piled up (堆积) around until I made a decision—to clear away some of them.(它们慢慢地堆积起来,直到我决定清除其中的一些)”和下文“But with the possibility for an international move, it seemed unreasonable to keep ones that I wouldn’t be able to carry.(但考虑到我可能会搬到国外,保留那些我无法携带的东西似乎是不合理的)”可知,作者想要清理积累的书籍,但考虑到自己回搬到国外,似乎留着它们不合理。 A项“It was really a painful activity.(这真的是一种痛苦的活动)”符合题意,与下文构成转折关系,it指“清理书籍”这件事。故选A。
根据上文“Then what was left were my favorites. Instead of taking over every corner in my home, my collection now includes two organized shelves.(然后剩下的是我的最爱。我的收藏品不再占据我家的每个角落,而是包括两个有序的架子)”可知,作者把剩下的书籍分类放好。由此推知,空处应陈述这样分类的结果。G项“With this new organization, I could see most books are novels set in places I’ve lived.(有了这个新的组织方法,我可以看到大多数书都是以我生活过的地方为背景的小说)”符合题意,“this new organzation”指上文“my collection now includes two organized shelves”。故选G。
根据上文“My San Francisco collection mainly includes Armistead Maupin’s Tales of the City. I pull them off the shelf when I feel disappointed in the place I now call home, and I let them take me to a happier view of this city.(我San Francisco的藏书主要包括阿米斯特德·莫平的《城市故事集》。当我对这个我现在称之为家的地方感到失望时,我会把它们从书架上拿下来,让它们带我去看这个城市更快乐的风景)”结合上段提到有两个书架且大部分书都是以作者生活过的地方为背景的小说推知,空处陈述应陈述另一个书架放着有关何地的书籍。B项“Then there’s my row of Miami books.(然后还有我那排迈阿密的书)”符合题意。故选B。
根据下文“I enjoy reading about places that I’d hardly want to call home, and I often try to read a novel or two ‘set in a location I’m going to. Some students are highly in favor of their popularity saying watching stream videos is a good way to relax themselves. Moreover, stream videos provide them with a platform to learn what they can’t learn in books, thus broadening their horizons.
However, others are strongly against them. In the first place, they think some inappropriate videos may have a harmful effect on children’s physical and mental health. And students addicted to stream videos may find it hard to focus on their study.
Personally speaking, the advantages overweigh the disadvantages, for they will do us more good than harm. However, we should keep a good balance stream videos and study.

One day, Dad took Tim and Lily to the supermarket. “Now where has Tim gone? ” asked Dad. Lily shrugged. Keeping track of Tim was not on her agenda today. She’d been trying to decide on the perfect gift for Dad’s upcoming birthday. This year, she was determined to prepare a present that couldn’t be bought at a store or ordered online.
“Daddy!” Tim appeared out of nowhere, disturbing Lily’s thoughts. He yelled, holding a cereal (麦片) box in the air, “Let’s get it! It’s nutritious and delicious! And it has a dragon inside! ” Tim remembered Dad saying that when he was a kid, almost every box of cereal came with a toy. Ever since, Tim was certain that he, too, would find a toy in the next box.
When they got home, Dad and Lily began putting away the groceries. Tim couldn’t wait to take the box of cereal upstairs to his room. By the time they finished, Lily could hear Tim shouting. “No! No!” Tim’s voice kept getting louder and louder. Lily imagined each word as the sound of a hammer striking metal. Then she raced towards her brother’s room. The moment she stepped inside, she felt a crunch (嘎吱声) beneath her feet. It was obvious that Tim dumped all that cereal looking for a toy dragon. “They lied! No dragon. Just a picture on the box.” Tim sounded close to tears. Annoyed as Lily was, she said quietly, “Let’s see what the box says.” “I don’t know how to read.” her brother said in a low voice.
It reminded Lily that last school year, Tim’s teacher who sent home easy-to-read books and worksheets insisted that he was ready to learn to read and just needed some extra help, but Tim complained about books “for babies” and “boring” homework assignments. It was really a headache for Dad to teach Tim to read! At the thought of these, it seemed that Tim’s dragon issue had swept away her concern for a present for Dad.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为 150 左右;
Paragraph 1:
Lily decided to cooperate with Tim, making up a dragon story and having Tim read for Dad.

Paragraph 2:
After what seemed to be a century, Dad’s birthday finally came.
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
Lily decided to cooperate with Tim, making up a dragon story and having Tim read for Dad. “What a good idea it is! Dad must be satisfied with such a special present!” Lily thought to herself, feeling a surge of excitement. She couldn’t wait to share it with Tim. Unexpectedly, he shook his head in disapproval. Aware that Tim was not confident with himself, Lily cast an encouraging look at him, saying, “I’ll help you, and I’m sure you’ll make it.” Tim nodded. In the following days, Lily taught him to read with great patience. Then, a new dragon story was born. Meanwhile, Tim also learned to read the story they made up.
After what seemed to be a century Dad’s birthday finally came. They told Dad to sit in the middle of the couch. Lily stood in front of Dad while Tim stood behind her. “This is a present from both of us! A dragon story written by us!” Lily announced and she could feel Dad was in surprise. When it was Tim’s turn to read the story, he turned to the first page, reading slowly. Having finished, he caught sight of Dad wiping tears off his eyes. “This is the best birthday present I have ever received!” he said, holding both children in his arms. It was at that time that Tim seemed to have grown up.

24. What is the main idea of the second paragraph?
A. What genetic engineering is. B. Why we use genetic engineering.
C. How to bring the dead back to life. D. How genetic engineering can help humans.
25. We can know from the story that nanobots can carry _________ to help doctors.
