One morning, Charlie Latuske woke up feverish in his home in Surrey in the UK, leaving him unable to function and in need of a doctor. He’d had a sore throat (咽喉痛) for a few days, believing it would get better, but that morning in August 2017, he knew that he had to do something about it.
“I was quite out of it,” said 27-year-old Latuske, who was also due to go on vacation with his wife in just three days.
Short on time, he feared the idea of calling his local physician only to wait days or even a week for an appointment, or to wait in a long line for an emergency appointment. “I just needed to be seen without messing around with long lines of people,” he said. “When you’re that ill, that’s the last thing you want to do.”
These days, this solution is somewhat easier, thanks to the Internet.
Latuske’s wife showed him a private medical app with which he could see a doctor within the hour — virtually. For a fee of £30, he could sign up, share his symptoms(症状)and video-call a doctor in the UK using the digital health provider Push Doctor. The app is one of many now available in the UK and worldwide to help people in need of medical attention who are unable to get to a doctor for various reasons.
“I was highly skeptical,” he said, adding that he didn’t trust such a service and questioned the credentials (资格) of doctors available through it. “But I was in great need of a doctor.”
Within 20 minutes, he was speaking with a doctor, who soon diagnosed him with tonsillitis (扁桃体炎).
Within the hour, he was at his nearest pharmacy (药房), collecting medicines. And three days later, he was on vacation, as planned.
“I was impressed by the efficiency of the whole thing,” he said.
4. What was Latuske’s concern about seeing a doctor?
A. He had to do a check-up. B. He would have a long wait.
C. He had to cancel his travel plans. D. He needed to spend lots of money.
5. What did Latuske’s wife do to help him?
A. She gave him some money. B. She offered him encouragement.
C. She took him to a nearby hospital. D. She recommended a medical app to him.
6. What does the underlined word “skeptical” in paragraph 6 mean?
A. Excited. B. Thankful. C. Doubtful. D. Annoyed.
7. What can we learn about the new way Latuske saw a doctor?
A It was highly efficient. B. It cost a small sum of money.
C. It needed some improvement. D. It was less useful than expected.
C
After spending three days about 360 miles above the ground, the all-civilian crew of SpaceX’s Inspiration4 have returned to Earth. Their Crew Dragon capsule splashed down off the Atlantic coast of Florida, not far from where they launched.
“This is the beginning of the private space tourism industry. It’s not like five minutes, a little moment of microgravity, and it’s over. This is much closer to what the public understands as space tourism,” said Jordan Bimm, a space historian at the University of Chicago.
The Dragon’s listed crew includes paying customer Jared Isaacman, the billionaire CEO of the payment processing company Shift4 Payments, and three people whose tickets he supported: Sian Proctor, a geoscientist and artist; Chris Sembroski, an engineer; and Hayley Arceneaux, a physician assistant. Proctor is the fourth African American woman to go to space, and Arceneaux made history as the first space traveler with a prosthetic (假的) body part.
The growth in private space travel will surely draw more careful examination of how the missions are designed and who gets to fly. Proctor would like to continue expanding access to more people. “We need to think about ‘JEDI’ space — a just, equitable, diverse, and inclusive space for all humanity. Because we’ re on Starship Earth and we want to bring everyone along with us,” she said at a pre-launch briefing. Isaacman mentioned their feelings during their on-orbit update: “We’ re really proud to share this experience with everyone. We know how lucky we are to be up here.”
Space tourism will likely remain expensive for a while, but reducing launch costs will enable more people to fly in space, following in the Inspiration4 crew’s footsteps, said Benji Reed, SpaceX’s human spaceflight chief. “I think today is a great day for commercial space travel,” he said. “I believe this will be looked at as the first mission that opened up the second space age, where space becomes much more accessible to average men and women across the world.”
8. What do Jordan Bimm’s words in paragraph 2 mean?
A. The space trip should have lasted longer.
B. Inspiration4 had a professional team.
C. Inspiration4 made history.
D. The space trip changed the public’s ideas of space tourism.
9. What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. An analysis of the difficulties Inspiration4 had.
B. A report on Inspiration4’s successful landing.
C. An introduction to the Inspiration4 crew.
D. A discussion about the meaning of Inspiration4’s return.
10. In Isaacman’s opinion, this trip to space was ______.
A. quite meaningful B. very relaxing
C. rather costly D. extremely boring
11. What did Benji Reed say about space tourism?
A. It has hardly been accepted by the public.
B It has little commercial value.
C. It would be affordable very soon.
D. It would be more accessible in the future.
D
Research has shown that people tend to get more happiness from spending their money on experiences, such as travel and entertainment, than on things, such as clothes and electronic goods. But are people happier during the purchased experience itself? Or does the happiness come more from expecting or remembering the experience?
A new study, published in the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology, offers an answer. Our experiential purchases bring us greater pleasure in terms of expectation and remembrance than do our material purchases, but they also bring us greater in-the-moment enjoyment, the study found.
For the study, the researchers recruited (招募) 2,635 adults who agreed to receive texts at any time during the day. The texts began with a happiness question, which asked the participants to rate how they felt“right now” on a scale from very bad to very good. Half of them were then asked if they had made a material purchase within the past hour, such as clothing or electronic goods. The others were asked if they had made an experiential purchase within the past hour, such as eating in a restaurant or attending a concert.
The researchers found that the purchasers of the experiences express higher levels of happiness than the purchasers of the material goods, no matter how much the purchases cost.
To address possible differences in types of purchasers, the researchers conducted a second study in which they researched more than 5,000 adults. “We still observed the same result,” said Amit Kumar, the study’s lead author.
The researchers said a possible explanation is the endurance (持久) of experiences in people’s memories, while the observed value of material goods weakens over time.
“If you want to be happier, it might be wise to shift some of your spending away from material goods and a bit more toward experiences,” Kumar said. “That would likely lead to greater happiness.”
12. What’s the purpose of the author by putting forward two questions in paragraph 1?
A. To make a fact clear.
B. To doubt the opinion presented.
C. To compare different research.
D. To introduce a new study.
13. What did the researchers text the participants for?
A. To ask them about their spending plans.
B. To monitor their purchasing behavior and emotions.
C To find out the change in their purchasing choices.
D. To understand their needs and spending habits.
14. What do the underlined words “the same result” in paragraph 5 refer to?
A. The desire to purchase things weakens over time.
B. Experiential purchases bring more happiness than material ones.
C. People get more pleasure from spending money than making it.
D. People are more willing to spend money on things.
15. What did Kumar think people should do in the last paragraph?
A. Be happy with what they have bought.
B. Make future spending decisions.
C. Spend more on experiences.
D. Consider its value when buying a product.

C. It may seem like AI is taking over.

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
“Okay, so, where do we go and play football?” Nora asked Emily. “Hmm, maybe we should play in my garden. Come on!” Emily led the way to her garden.
“I go first!” Nora said as she kicked the ball towards Emily.
“Is that all you got? Watch me, the champion, kick the ball!” For a second, Emily ran like the wind to the ball and kicked it so hard that it flew into the neighbor’s house.
There was a loud sound.
“Uh oh ... what did you do?” Nora spoke, feeling afraid.
“I ... I do not know. Oh no! I think I broke my neighbor’s window,” Emily cried as she ran across her garden and hid behind a tree and Nora disappeared into the air.
Fear was written all over Emily’s face. She saw the neighbor, Mr. Mason, pick up the pieces of glass. There was anger on his face. Emily ran away as fast as she could into a nearby park. She dared not return home anytime soon.
The sun was setting and Emily returned home keeping her eyes wide open for the neighbor.
What if Mr. Mason was at her house? What if he knew it was her? Her heart was shaking as she cautiously (小心翼翼地) arrived home.
Her mother saw the sweat on her face. She knew her daughter had done something wrong.
“Emily, are you okay? Is something wrong? I can help you solve your problems, my dear,” Mother said.
Emily held her mother’s hands and her eyes were wet with tears. “Mama, I did something bad, but it was unintentional. I broke Mr. Mason’s window by hitting the football so hard.”
Mother listened to Emily patiently and she did not press further, although she was not pleased that Emily did not say sorry to Mr. Mason immediately. Then Mother held a pencil and began writing on a piece of white paper.
Mother wrote a sentence on the paper and then she erased it and wrote something again.

A Excited. B. Thankful. C. Doubtful. D. Annoyed.
7. What can we learn about the new way Latuske saw a doctor?
A. It was highly efficient. B. It cost a small sum of money.
C. It needed some improvement. D. It was less useful than expected.
【答案】4. B 5. D 6. C 7. A
【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇记叙文。文章讲述了Charlie Latuske利用科技求医的经历。
【4题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中的“Short on time, he feared the idea of calling his local physician only to wait days or even a week for an appointment, or to wait in a long line for an emergency appointment. (由于时间紧迫,他害怕给当地的医生打电话,等待几天甚至一周才能预约,或者排很长的队等待紧急预约)”及Latuske所说的“I just needed to be seen without messing around with long lines of people.(我只是想让别人注意到我,而不是和排长队的人瞎混)”可知,Latuske很发愁看医生,因为他需要等几天甚至一周才能预约上医生。他也可以预约急诊,但需要排队等候。故选B项。
【5题详解】
细节理解题。根据第五段中的“Latuske’s wife showed him a private medical app with which he could see a doctor within the hour virtually.(拉图斯克的妻子向他展示了一个私人医疗应用程序,他可以在一个小时内看到在线医生)”可知,Latuske的妻子给他推荐了一款私人医疗应用程序。故选D项。
【6题详解】
词义猜测题。根据第六段中的“he didn’t trust such a service and questioned the credentials of doctors available through it.(并补充说他不相信这样的服务,并质疑通过该服务获得的医生的资质)”及Latuske所说的“But I was in great need of a doctor.(但是我非常需要一位医生)”可知,起初,Latuske并不依赖妻子推荐的那款应用程序。由此推断,划线单词的意思与“怀疑的”。故选C项。
【7题详解】
推理判断题。根据倒数第三段“Within 20 minutes, he was speaking with a doctor, who soon diagnosed him with tonsillitis.(不到20分钟,他就和医生谈了起来,医生很快诊断出他得了扁桃体炎)”及倒数第二段中的“Within the hour, he was at his nearest pharmacy (药房), collecting medicines.(不到一个小时,他就去了最近的药店取药)”及最后一段中的Latuske所说的“I was impressed by the efficiency of the whole thing(整个项目的效率给我留下了深刻的印象)”可知,通过妻子推荐的医疗应用程序,Latuske很快就弄清楚了自己的病情,并且买到了药。由此可推断,与传统的就医方式相比,Latuske所使用的新的就诊方式很高效。故选A项。

B. It has little commercial value.
C. It would be affordable very soon.
D. It would be more accessible in the future.

C. To find out the change in their purchasing choices.
【答案】12. D 13. B 14. B 15. C

根据文章第四段“The researchers found that the purchasers of the experiences express higher levels of happiness than the purchasers of the material goods, no matter how much the purchases cost. (研究人员发现,无论购买成本如何,体验的购买者都比物质商品的购买者表现出更高的幸福感。)”以及第五段“To address possible differences in types of purchasers, the researchers conducted a second study in which they researched more than 5,000 adults. “We still observed the same result,” said Amit Kumar, the study’s lead author. (为了探究不同类型购买者之间可能存在的差异,研究人员进行了第二项研究,研究对象超过5000名成年人。“我们仍然观察到了相同的结果,”该研究的主要作者Amit Kumar说道。)”可知,两次研究的结论相同,即与购买物品相比,把钱花在生活体验上能让人更快乐,与选项B“Experiential purchases bring more happiness than material ones. People get more pleasure from spending money than making it. People are more willing to spend money on things. (体验式购买比物质购买带来更多的快乐)”意思相符。故选B。

第二节(满分25分)
The sun was setting and Emily returned home, keeping her eyes wide open for the neighbor.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在相应位置作答。
“Do you know why pencils have erasers?” Mother asked.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Emily walked up to the neighbor’s front door with weak legs.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 “Do you know why pencils have erasers?” Mother asked. Emily replied, “To erase our mistakes.” Mother answered, “Exactly! You see, I made a mistake when writing on the paper. But I can undoubtedly remove it with this eraser. Thus, when we make mistakes in life, we can and should fix them immediately. Then it is no longer a mistake.” Emily realized what her mother wanted to say. “Mama, you are right. Saying sorry is the only way I can make up for a mistake.” Saying this, Emily got up and went out of the house.
Emily walked up to the neighbor’s front door with weak legs. Emily knocked on the door and Mr. Mason opened it. “Mr. Mason. I am sorry that I broke your window. Yes, it was me. I have realized my mistake and I am very sorry,” Emily said nervously. Mr. Mason saw her shoulders drop down and smiled. “Emily, I appreciate that you have gathered enough courage to come here to say sorry. You are a good girl and I forgive you. Now, would you like to come in for some cake?” Emily smiled, “Thank you Mr. Mason and if you don’t mind me asking, I would love to have a chocolate one!”
