About 15 years ago,Andrew McLindon,a business owner and passionate cyclist, was riding his bike in Austin,Texas, when he thought about a friend's 12-year-old son.The boy had never known the joy of biking because he suffered from a brain condition that often caused balance disturbances.
When he got home,McLindon, now 60,went online and found a three-wheel recumbent (侧卧的) bike with a seat belt, perfect for a child with balance issues.Soon the boy was cycling around the street with his peers, having fun and getting exercise. But there was more,as McLindon learned from his friend's reaction.“To see his son interacting with other kids,” McLindon says.“I'll never forget the smile on his face.”
That smile launched the McLindon Family Foundation.Funded by donations, the group works with pediatric rehab (小儿康复) clinics to find children who can benefit from owning an adaptive bike and to help craft each bike to the particular needs of the child.A bike may include a headrest,a shoulder band,a seat belt, and a caregiver's steering and braking system in the back. The bikes are expensive—$3,000 to $4,000,and that's with the foundation's large discount. For kids lucky enough to get one, they're a life changer.
“We worked with a 14-year-old girl who had a back problem,” says McLindon. She spent most days on the couch watching TV.Soon after she got her bike, she was training for special-needs triathlons (铁人三项).In a magazine interview, she said,“I always knew there was an athlete in me.”
So far,the foundation has given away 450 bikes, and that's just a start.“I do a lot of things.I run a lot of companies,” McLindon says.“But getting these kids their bikes is the most important thing that I do.”

With one's eyes closed,Beijing's main roads sound like any Chinese city. All around is the roar of traffic, featuring recorded safety warnings from buses and the occasional bell of a rental-bicycle.But in the capital's last hutongs,as its ancient grey-walled alleys are known, fragments of an older soundscape can be heard.
The song of caged crickets is one.Hung in the doorways of courtyard homes, the insects bring a rural note into the city.A quarter-century ago their song was common.
Another relic is the musical sound produced by steel plates, announcing a knife sharpener's arrival.Several such specialists still work in Beijing's streets.Their sounding-plates attract customers from hutong homes and high-rise flats. But numbers are falling.
An almost-vanished Beijing sound is one of the strangest.Like the noise of flying saucers in an old science-fiction film,it is made by pigeon whistles.Tiny flutes made from bamboo, these are sewn into the tail feathers of pigeons kept in rooftop cage. The birds are released twice a day to circle in the sky.Even 20 years ago,it was possible to hear this melodic noise in the hutongs.
Modern Beijing is a city in a hurry. Many hutongs have been torn down to make way for wide avenues and shiny skyscrapers, leaving no room for pigeon lofts(鸽舍).Zhang Baotong is one of Beijing's last master pigeon-whistle makers. He is advising a museum of sound in Songzhuang,a suburb of Beijing that is popular with artists.A rooftop cage is planned, with more than 100 pigeons that will take to the skies for visitors.
The co-founder of the museum,Colin Siyuan Chinnery,is a British-Chinese artist and collector of Beijing's sounds. He lists the rattles and rhythmic cries used by fortune tellers and medicine sellers, doctors, barbers and knife sharpeners. Many of these will be showcased in an exhibition about old Beijing narrated by an animation of Mr.Zhang.Other places had traders' cries, but true Beijingers dismiss sellers elsewhere as mere loud shouters; Beijingers' pride is one tradition that never fades,Mr.Chinnery says.

Some people hold the idea that being starving is the most effective way of losing body fat.Remember,if we go on a starvation diet,we lose weight but not much fat.In starvation mode,we use up our energy stores of carbohydrate (碳水化合物) first (in the form of a substance called glycogen). However, the body can store only a little glycogen, and this is used up within two days. Then we start breaking down fat and protein. But we can't afford to lose body proteins:our muscle mass decreases,we become noticeably weaker, and our immunity is threatened because the lack of protective immunoglobulin proteins (保护性免疫球蛋白) means we are subject to an increased risk of infection.
Sure,we look slimmer, and we certainly weigh less, but we are weaker and becoming unhealthy. There is no point in dieting if it's going to make us ill. And,of course, because we need our muscles, when we are even slightly distracted from the diet, our bodies immediately rebuild muscles and we regain all of the “lost” weight very quickly. Not only have we gone through a period of reduced immunity and a lack of proteins, minerals, vitamins, antioxidants and other essential nutrients, but there is evidence that so-called immediately effective dieting is detrimental to health in the longer term.
Quite simply,we are going to virtually eliminate all refined carbohydrates and sugars (which are also carbohydrates),leaving us with a low-carbohydrate,high-protein diet.On this diet, you will be cutting out virtually all refined carbohydrates so that body fat is burned with priority,to provide energy.Sugar, white flour, cakes, bread, pasta and rice are the usual trouble-makers.These foods have very little nutritional value and, what's more, can cause medical and fat problems.Of course, there are forms of these carbohydrates—such as whole-meal rice,whole-meal bread and whole-meal pasta—that do have nutritional benefits and which you can reintroduce later, but in the initial stage of the diet, you have to reduce all carbohydrates,to switch on the fat-burning mechanism.
One point to be aware of is that refined carbohydrates can appear in many unexpected sources. You probably know that bread, cakes, biscuits, potato crisps and fried potato chips all contain refined carbohydrates, but pasta, rice, most breakfast cereals, most tinned foods, many pre-packaged foods, and prepared sauces do as well...In fact, the list goes on and on.Virtually all “fast foods” contain very high proportion of refined carbohydrates and if your diet is high in refined carbohydrates, you will definitely put on weight. If you're worried that by cutting out refined carbohydrates, you'll have virtually no foods left to choose from, fear not.In fact,high-protein and nutritious foods such as meat, fish, shellfish and eggs are all open to you, along with vegetables, cheese, spices and herbs, from which you can easily produce delicious, healthy and quick meals. You'll be relieved to hear that you don't have to live on a diet of lettuce and tomato. On the contrary, you will be eating virtually limitless quantities of very tasty food with delicious sauces and dressings:in other words, real food!
12.What do you know about people following a starvation diet?
A.They are more likely to develop diseases.
B.They run the risk of immediate health problems.
C.Their fat and protein will be burnt prior to carbohydrates.
D.Their appetite will be spoiled gradually.
根据第一段中“However...But we can't afford to lose body proteins:our muscle mass decreases,we become noticeably weaker, and our immunity is threatened because the lack of protective immunoglobulin proteins means we are subject to an increased risk of infection.” 故选A项。]
13.What's the meaning of the underlined word in paragraph 2?
A.Damaging. B.Insignificant.
C.Unpredictable. D.Constructive.
根据画线词的上文“Not only have we gone through a period of reduced immunity and a lack of proteins, minerals, vitamins, antioxidants and other essential nutrients”可知,此处介绍节食减肥法对人体带来的伤害,画线词所在句是进一步说明这种伤害。 故选A项。]
14.What can you learn about the carbohydrates in a high protein diet?
A.They are banned although considered beneficial.
B.They are used as a primary source of energy.
C.They can be consumed only under certain circumstances.
D.Carbohydrates foster the consumption of sugary food.
根据第三段内容尤其是“Of course, there are forms of these carbohydrates—such as whole-meal rice,whole-meal bread and whole-meal pasta—that do have nutritional benefits and which you can reintroduce later, but in the initial stage of the diet, you have to reduce all carbohydrates,to switch on the fat-burning mechanism.”
15.What can you do if you follow the new high protein diet?
A.You can become less muscular and athletic.
B.You should only eat meat, fish, shellfish and eggs.
C.You should monitor all the protein you take in.
D.You can have and make delicious dishes.
根据最后一段中“In fact,high-protein and nutritious foods such as meat, fish, shellfish and eggs are all open to you, along with vegetables, cheese, spices and herbs, from which you can easily produce delicious, healthy and quick meals.”
The next time you're at an airport or hotel, you might notice a traveling group that consists of young kids, parents, and grandparents vacationing together. 16 But more and more families tend to bring multiple generations with them.
17 In larger groups, for example, childcare responsibilities can be shared across family members, allowing parents to take a break. But the real value of these trips might be how they give relatives an opportunity to freshen their perception of the people they've known for perhaps their entire life.Travel can take us out of our familiar contexts and offer people a chance to see one another differently.
The shift toward multi-generational travel has a few explanations. For one, grandparents today stay healthy later in life, allowing them more energy for travel. 18 Plus, the average U.S.household has become more multi-generational.Americans are not just traveling with grandparents in order to spend time with them, they are traveling with them because they are more likely to live with them in the first place. 19 Americans are taking fewer vacation days than they did in the 1970s.They might want to make the most of that time by including as many people as possible.
Whatever the reason for its popularity,a multi-generational trip can be a rare time when younger and older generations can glimpse the complex people they have each become.Away from the family home, older generations get to see their adult children as responsible parents.Kids get to see their grandparents encounter a new environment. 20
A.Another explanation is time pressure.
B.The benefits of multi-generational trips are numerous.
C.Decades ago, only wealthy families vacationed together.
D.A scene like this would have been rare a few decades ago.
E.Multi-generational family travel tops the list of travel trends.
F.Everyone gets to break out of their family roles and figures out how to be together.
G.Also,big-group accommodation has become more affordable through online platforms.
16.D [根据空后一句“But more and more families tend to bring multiple generations with them.”

My fellow students,
In a bid to raise our awareness of volunteer service,an activity themed “Volunteers to Serve the Community” is scheduled to be held next week.
All the participants will be divided into two groups, who are to complete two tasks, namely cleaning public facilities and visiting elderly people, under the instructions of the local community directors.Volunteer service,as its name suggests, means making contributions to the world with nothing in return. It improves community cohesion and even contributes to the development of the whole society.Meanwhile,we students can enhance the team spirit, interpersonal skills and organizational ability,by actively engaging in volunteer work.
Therefore, volunteer service is of great significance to oneself and society.I appeal to every one of you to get passionately involved in this activity.

Not so long ago, most people didn't know who Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce was going to become. She was just an average high school athlete. There was every indication that she was just another Jamaican teenager without much of a future. However, one person wanted to change this.Stephen Francis observed then eighteen-year-old Shelly-Ann at a track meet and was convinced that he had seen the beginning of true greatness. Her times were not exactly impressive, but even so,he sensed there was something trying to get out.He decided to offer Shelly-Ann a place in his very strict training sessions.Their cooperation quickly produced results, and a few years later at Jamaica's Olympic Games in early 2008,Shelly-Ann,who at that time only ranked number 70 in the world, beat Jamaica's unchallenged queen of the sprint (短跑).
“Where did she come from?” asked an astonished sprinting world, before concluding that she must be one of those one-hit wonders that spring up from time to time, only to disappear again without signs. But Shelly-Ann was to prove that she was anything but a one-hit wonder. At the Beijing Olympic she swept away any doubts about her ability to perform consistently by becoming the first Jamaican woman ever to win the 100 meters Olympic gold.
Shelly-Ann is a little woman with a big smile. Her journey to becoming the fastest woman on Earth has been anything but smooth and effortless. She grew up in one of Jamaica's toughest inner-city communities known as Waterhouse, one of the poorest communities in Jamaica.Sometimes her family didn't have enough to eat.She ran at the school championships barefooted because she couldn't afford shoes. Her mother Maxime had been an athlete herself as a young girl but, like so many other girls in Waterhouse, had to stop after she had her first baby.Maxime's early entry into the adult world with its responsibilities gave her the determination to ensure that her kids would not end up in Waterhouse's roundabout of poverty. One of the first things Maxime used to do with Shelly-Ann was taking her to the track, and she was ready to sacrifice (牺牲) everything.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
It didn't take long for Shelly-Ann to meet her mother's expectations.
But Shelly-Ann's victory was far greater than that.
It didn't take long for Shelly-Ann to meet her mother's expectations. On a summer evening in Beijing in 2008,all those long, hard hours of work and commitment finally bore fruit. The barefoot kid who just a few years previously had been living in poverty, had written a new chapter in the history of sports.Shelly-Ann won gold medals at international competitions many times and she gained good fame as well as a big fortune. She completely got out of Waterhouse's roundabout of poverty at last.
But Shelly-Ann's victory was far greater than that. The night she won Olympic gold in Beijing, the dark cloud above one of the world's toughest criminal neighborhoods simply disappeared for a few days.“I have so much fire burning for my country,” Shelly said. She plans to start a foundation for homeless children and wants to build a community centre in Waterhouse. She intends to fight to make it a woman's as well as a man's world.A desire,a dream,a vision deep inside the heart determines Shelly's success.
