As an English learner, you may encounter (遇到) many new words every week. Are you having a hard time ___45___ all of them? Well, perhaps you can try out the Method of Loci.
“Loci” means “locations” in Latin (拉丁语). Users of the Method of Loci will create an imaginary physical space in their minds. They will then put words or numbers in certain locations within this space. As they walk through the space in their mind’s eye, they will be able to call to mind all the information it contains. The Method of Loci works because human beings are good at remembering ___46___ , but not so good at remembering words, numbers and lists.
You can try memorizing the first 10 digits of pi (3.141592653) using the Method of Loci. The first step is to imagine a home. The house number is 314. On the doorstep there is one parcel. You pick it up and find that it has come from your 59-year-old uncle. Now, you open the door. There you see ___47___ welcome mats. Six pairs of shoes have been placed on them. On the wall, there are five pegs (钉子), with three articles of clothing hanging off them.
And what if you must remember a long ___48___ ? With the Method of Loci, you might imagine exactly where all the items (eggs, milk, yogurt, carrots, tofu, etc.) would go in the refrigerator after your shopping trip. While shopping, you can easily gather all the goods as you fill in the refrigerator in your ___49___ . World record holders in memory competitions often say that anyone can learn and use the Method of
Loci and become a “memory expert.” Are you ___50___ to try this method? Find out whether it can help you remember all the new words in your English book!

D. Answer the questions(根据短文内容回答下列问题)(共12分)
Electives (选修课) are always popular with students because they offer the chance to learn something exciting, and they’re a welcome break from regular courses like maths and physics. Here are just a few of the exciting electives lucky teenagers can take in some of China’s middle schools.
Self-defense skills
A school from Chongqing
The school offers a self-defense course—just for girls. Those who attend the lessons have the chance to study basic self-protection skills in a one-on-one practice. They learn how to get away when they need to and defend themselves against attacks. “I feel safer in myself now,” said Zhang Yi, 15, a girl student.
Pottery
A school from Tianjin
The famous pottery scene in a movie called Ghost is a lasting memory for many movie-goers. Young artists at the school love to get their hands dirty creating beautiful pieces. Students learn how to design various clay projects. At the end they have the skills to make their own bowls, cups, vases and pots.
Horse riding
A school from Beijing
Equestrians (马术) can look pretty cool, can’t they? Teenagers at this school can now choose a course in riding skills. They’re taught to communicate with their horses and how to use reins. To ride a horse in the proper way, a student must hold the head forward and keep his back straight. Students come away from this elective not only knowing how to ride a horse gracefully, but also physically fitter!
Couplets (对联)
A school from Nanjing
How many of you can write a couplet? This old literary (文学) form is slowly disappearing, but Chinese culture lovers at the school are trying to make it alive. For their elective, teenagers study old couplets and try to rhyme (押韵) their own lines. Many of this year’s students can’t wait for the Spring Festival, when they’ll be able to show off their new skills.

As an English learner you may encounter (遇到) many new words every week.
On the doorstep, there is one parcel.
World record holders in memory competitions often say that anyone can learn and use the Method of

Pottery

Horse riding
A school from Beijing
Equestrians (马术) can look pretty cool, can’t they? Teenagers at this school can now choose a course in riding skills. They’re taught to communicate with their horses and how to use reins. Couplets (对联)
A school from Nanjing
How many of you can write a couplet? This old literary (文学的) form is slowly disappearing, but Chinese culture lovers at the school are trying to make it alive.
