C There was once an old man who went to the seaside every morning, walking along the beach drawing pictures and enjoying the beautiful sea. One morning, he came across a beach accidentally where thousands of starfish had washed up. The old man noticed a little girl was coming in the distance. As she walked, she would stop to bend down (弯下腰) and pick up an object and throw it into the sea. The man walked closer asking what she was doing by the seaside. She stopped, looked up, and replied, “Throwing starfish into the sea.” The man asked her why, to which she replied, “The sea has washed them up onto the beach and they can’t go back to the sea by themselves. When the sun gets high, they will die, unless I throw them back into the water.” The man noted, “But there are miles and miles of beach and there are thousands of starfish all along every mile, how will you make much of a difference?” The girl bent down, picked up another starfish and threw it as far as she could into the sea. Then she turned towards the old man, gave a smile and said, “I made a difference to that one!” After hearing the girl’s explanation, the old man was shocked. People often think they can’t do enough to make a big difference so they put off their actions or wait for someone else to take the lead. However, the little girl taught the old man a very important lesson. Everyone has the opportunities to create positive changes. One small step towards changing the world can make a big difference. Be the change for someone and inspire others to do the same. While you may not be able to change the whole world, you can make a big difference for a small part of it. 27.What did the little girl do by the seaside? A.She drew pictures to enjoy the beautiful sea. B.She washed the starfish and made them clean. C.She threw the starfish into the sea to save them. D.She walked along the beach and was bathed in the sun. 28.How did the old man feel after hearing the girl’s explanation? A.Shocked. B.Worried. C.Excited. D.Relaxed. 29.What can we learn from the story? A.Confidence can make wishes come true. B.Taking a small step can make a big difference. C.Changing others is necessary if they are wrong. D.People can change the world when they grow up. D The popularity of self-help books and happiness workshops shows our constant desire (不变的渴望) to make life better. But could it be that many of our lives are already better than we recognize? While we may have a loving family, a good place to live, and a worthwhile job, we often fail to notice those things. It’s not because we are unthankful or stupid. It’s because of a basic characteristic of our brain, known as habituation. Habituation is the process in which neurons (神经元) fire less and less in response (反应) to things that are constant. You enter a room filled with roses and after a short while, you cannot catch the pleasant smell any longer. And just as you get used to the smell, you also get used to a loving relationship, to a nice home, to a beautiful work of art. Your brain cares about what recently changed, not about what remained the same. And so, what once took your breath away becomes part of life’s furniture. You habituate to it—you fail to respond to what you used to find attractive. The good news is that you can dishabituate. The key is taking small breaks from your daily life. For example, when people return home from a long business trip, they often find their normal life has “resparkled”. Time away, however short, will enable you to see your life with fresh eyes. Similarly, you can change your environment using your imagination. Create a clear picture of life in your mind, but without your home, your job, or your family. This small act might make you feel lucky about what you have. Why, though, have we evolved (进化) a brain that gets less and less pleasure from good things that are constant? Wouldn’t it be great if you wondered at your job or house just as you did at the very beginning? Maybe, or maybe not. Habituation to the good drives you to move forward and progress. If you did not experience habituation, you would be satisfied with less, which means you would have reduced motivation (动力) to learn, to develop, and to change. A balance must be found here. On the one hand, without habituation, we may not have ended up with the technological development and great works of art we do. But on the other hand, habituation can lead us to be unsatisfied, bored, and restless. Perhaps then, rather than focusing completely on how to better our life, we need to also learn how to see our life better—to notice the great things we have habituated to a little bit more. 30.What do we know from Paragraphs 2 and 3? A.It’s not always easy for us to get used to new things. B.We need to pay more attention to our work and family life. C.We’re more likely to notice something bad over something good. D.Our brain responds less to something after repeated presentations. 31.The word “resparkled” in Paragraph 4 most probably means A.stayed the same day by day B.suddenly seemed amazing again C.returned to a boring condition D.completely changed in a short time 32.From the passage, we learn that _________. A.dishabituation may lead us to be unthankful for what we have B.habituation to the good may decrease our satisfaction with life C.we cannot dishabituate without moving away from our environment D.we hardly have motivation to go from good to great when habituation sets in 33.What's the writer’s main purpose of writing this passage? A.To motivate us to make great progress in daily life. B.To suggest keeping a balance between life and work. C.To stress the importance of experiencing habituation. D.To remind us that our life may be better than we think. 第二部分 本部分共6题,共20分。根据题目要求,完成相应任务。 四、阅读表达(每题2分,共10分) 阅读短文,根据短文内容回答问题。 The Surprising Benefits of Reading Aloud Did your parents use to read a story to you at bed time? Have you read anything aloud to your friends? When you recall those memories, do you feel a certain sense of closeness? For me, the answer is yes. After reading aloud, I also feel my reading is so attractive to audiences. There are two common reading habits: reading silently and reading aloud. Personally, I prefer reading aloud. Last school year, I read aloud to some of my students. Soon I found they were fully involved in the story. When I read to them with vocal variety (声音变化) and emotion, students were able to understand the personality of characters. Reading aloud allows others to hear the content (内容). It can improve our understanding of the text. This is why in ancient Iraq and Syria more than 4,000 years ago, reading means “to cry out” or “to listen”. Reading aloud can bring other benefits to us. According to a research, reading aloud can help us to remember 10% more vocabulary than silent reading. If readers have speech difficulties and cannot fully remember the words they read aloud, reading aloud can help those readers to improve their memory. It was said that reading the words to another person resulted in the highest verbal (言语) memory recall. By contrast, reading silently produced the lowest verbal memory recall. Reading aloud can also help doctors to detect (测出) Alzheimer’s disease at an early stage if the reading includes specific mistakes. Someone may ask: If there are so many benefits, why do we still read silently? According to a study on the effect of writing on the human brain and behaviours by Karenleigh Overmann, a professor at the University of Bergen, Norway, she discovered that silent reading keeps up with the speed of thought much better when people read while writing. Reading aloud will slow down the ability to read quickly because producing a sound needs more time. Reading silently and reading aloud both have their own advantages and disadvantages. We can choose the suitable reading habit according to our different needs and situations. 34.What are the two common reading habits? 35.What can reading aloud help the readers do if they have speech difficulties? 36.Why will reading aloud slow down the ability to read quickly? 37.Would you like to try reading aloud? Why or why not? (Please give two reasons.) 五、文段表达(10分) 从下面两个题目中任选一题,根据中文和英文提示,完成一篇不少于50词的文段写作。文中已给出内容不计入总词数。所给提示词语仅供选用。请不要写出你的校名和姓名。 题目① 38.读书,可以通理、明志、修身。假如你是李华。请你用英文写一篇短文给学校英文网站投稿,介绍对你影响最大的 一本书, 以及书的内容和对你的影响。 提示词语:the Little Prince, experience, story, courage, friendship 提示问题: ● Which book has influenced you most? ● What is the book mainly about? ● How has it influenced you? ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 题目② 39.向阳花会一直跟随太阳的方位生长,这种执著的精神告诉我们,要乐观积极面对生活,向往美好和阳光,永不言弃。 学校英语网站正在举办“向阳花开Sunflowers Bloom”为主题的征文连载活动。假设你是李华,请你用英语写一篇短文投稿,谈谈你对向阳花精神的理解,介绍一件帮助你对向阳花精神有了更深理解的事情。 提示词语:never give up, challenge, encourage, support, confident 提示问题:·What do you think of the spirit of sunflowers? ·What has helped you develop a deeper understanding of the spirit of sunflowers? _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 1 / 12 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$ 2024-2025学年九年级英语下学期开学摸底考试卷考试卷(北京专用) 英语 注意事项: 1. 1.— Tom, what’s your ________ of being a successful baseball player? — To practise over and over again. A.Shocked. B.Worried. C.Excited. 【答案】30.D 31.B 32.B 33.D 【导语】本文主要介绍了习惯化对我们生活的影响。 30.细节理解题。根据“Habituation is the process in which neurons (神经元) fire less and less in response (反应) to things that are constant.”可知,习惯化是神经元对恒定事物的反应越来越少的过程。由此可知,在多次重复的呈现后,我们的大脑对某些事物的反应就会减弱。故选D。 31.词句猜测题。根据“For example, when people return home from a long business trip, they often find their normal life has ‘resparkled’.”可知,例如,当人们长途出差回家时,他们经常发现自己的正常生活“重新焕发活力”了。由此可知,resparkled表示“事物突然再次变得令人惊奇”。故选B。 32.推理判断题。根据“Habituation to the good drives you to move forward and progress. If you did not experience habituation, you would be satisfied with less, which means you would have reduced motivation (动力) to learn, to develop, and to change.”可知,对美好事物的习惯驱使你前进和进步。如果你没有经历习惯化,你会对更少的东西感到满意,这意味着你对学习、发展和改变的动力会减少。由此可知,习惯于美好的事物可能会降低我们对生活的满意度。故选B。 33.推理判断题。根据“Perhaps then, rather than focusing completely on how to better our life, we need to also learn how to see our life better—to notice the great things we have habituated to a little bit more.”可知,也许,与其完全专注于如何改善我们的生活,我们还需要学会如何更好地看待我们的生活——更多地注意我们已经习惯的美好事物。由此可知,作者写本文是为了提醒我们,我们的生活也许比我们想象的更好。故选D。 第二部分 本部分共6题,共20分。根据题目要求,完成相应任务。 四、阅读表达(每题2分,共10分) 阅读短文,根据短文内容回答问题。 The Surprising Benefits of Reading Aloud Did your parents use to read a story to you at bed time? (Please give two reasons.) 【答案】 34. Reading silently and reading aloud. 35. Reading aloud can help them to improve their memory. 36. Because producing a sound needs more time. 37.Yes.
