Carmen had always dreamed of being on stage. She was excited when she got her first big break with a part in the school play. She would play the part of a doctor. She would wear long, white doctor’s coat and carry a big bag that held a newspaper with blank pages and a box of bandages (绷带). She would do some funny acts and say some lines (台词). Carmen could hardly wait to act in a real play on stage.
However, as the play came closer, Carmen began to worry about being on stage. She sat in her bedroom, saying the lines over and over again. They just wouldn’t stick in her head. It would be terrible if she forgot her lines on stage. She thought for a long time and decided to quit (放弃) the play. Because she didn’t want to risk making a fool of herself on stage.
Carmen walked into the kitchen and said she wouldn’t be in the play. “Don’t worry so much,” Carmen’s father said. “You’re a talented young girl. You are a natural performer.” “Yes,” her mother agreed. “You’ll do better if you relax.”
Carmen knew they were right, but she couldn’t stop worrying. Suddenly, she had a great idea. She took out the newspaper and wrote all of her lines on the blank pages. Now she could look at the newspaper and no one would know she was reading her lines. This would help her relax. That day Carmen went on stage. She said her first line. Then she said her next line. Carmen didn’t look at the newspaper once. Remembering her lines was easy because she was relaxed. As a result, Carmen remembered everything. After the play, Carmen let out a long deep breath and smiled happily. Carmen’s parents went backstage (后台). They rushed over to congratulate her on the perfect performance.

When she was little, Gladys Kalema liked to play the piano. One day when she was at her piano, a monkey climbed up to join her. This became the most unforgettable moment of her childhood. It also planted the seeds of a dream in her mind. She decided to work with animals when she grew up. This dream came true when Kalema was in her early twenties. She became a wildlife vet (兽医) in Africa. That was thirty years ago. Since then, Kalema has never stopped caring for wild animals

Now, many of these hunters of wildlife have become protectors of it.

She does her best to save mountain gorillas (山地大猩猩), which are in great danger. But she doesn’t just protect the animals. She also puts her focus on helping the local communities. When Kalema first arrived in Africa, many local people lived a poor life. Some of them made a living by hunting wild animals. Kalema wanted to protect these animals from bullets (子弹). The key to doing so, she realized, was to improve local people’s quality of life. The woman offered fast-growing crops to these people. By growing the crops, the locals could feed themselves and make money. They no longer needed to go hunting. Slowly, their attitude (态度) towards these wild animals began to change. Now, many of these hunters of wildlife have become protectors of it.
Last year, Kalema received the Champions of the Earth Award for her work. It is the United Nations’ highest environmental honor. Do you want to help protect the wild animals in your area? You can learn from Kalema and start by getting to the root (根源) of the problem.
46.What is Kalema’s dream?
47.When did Kalema become a vet in Africa?
48.How did Kalema help the local people?
49.Does Kalema just protect the animals? Why or why not?
50.What is the most important for Kalema’s success according to the writer?
