You can see animals and birds you only see on TV or in zoos. The trip starts in South Africa and finishes in Western Australia. You travel on a Russian ship, Kapitan Khlebnikov, and the holiday lasts for just under a month. ★Go on Safari This holiday is a trip to see wild animals with a difference. You travel by helicopter (直升飞机) over parts of Kenya, listening to music as you fly, and then you sleep under the African stars in a comfortable bed. There’s another trip in a hot-air balloon, which gives you a second chance to see wild animals. The best moment is the Elephant Watch in Samburu, where your experienced guide can tell you all about these amazing animals. ★Fly High This is probably the most expensive holiday in the world. You can go on a flight into space and travel around the Earth in a spaceship — if you have the money! The only problem with this holiday is the six-day training course before you take the trip. You travel above the Earth for between 30 and 90 minutes and you get a beautiful view of our green and blue planet. ★Live like Robinson Crusoe If you dream of life on a quiet island, then this is the holiday for you. The island of Quilalea is off the coast of Mozambique and you can only see turtles (海龟) and a few tourists there. You may live like Robinson Crusoe: watch the turtles, go fishing, or travel in a boat to another island to have a picnic. 1. Go on Safari gives you a chance to see ________. A. Russian ships B. sea fish C. wild animals D. outer space 2. If you prefer a holiday on a quiet island, which would be the best choice? A. Fly High. B. Go on Safari. C. See a Penguin. D. A. attract tourists B. introduce different animals C. explain dreams D. share geography knowledge B On his tenth birthday, on February 6, 2023, Lzmir Kassam woke to the news of the powerful earthquake in Turkey and Syria. Living in Calgary but named after Turkey’s third-largest city, Lzmir felt a deep connection to the sorrow. Driven by a wish to help, he saw an opportunity to make a difference through his love of running. Two years earlier, Lzmir had run his first half-marathon, collecting money for Canadian Women for Women in Afghanistan. This time he set a new goal: to run ten kilometers ten times, each run marking a year of his life, and to use this challenge to collect money for the people in the earthquake-hit area. Over the course of four months, from last February to June, he ran a total of 62 miles (100 kilometers)-more than two marathons. For his final run, on June 10, the Canadian Turkish Cultural and Islamic Centre helped organise a celebratory event, and Lzmir was joined by his father, his teacher, his classmates and members of the Calgary Turkish community. In the end, Lzmir’s movement collected more than £10,500 for the people in the earthquake-hit area. “Sometimes I’d feel tired,” Lzmir told CBC Kids News after the last run. “But then I’d think of all these people that I’m helping and I’d keep pushing on.” 4. What event made Lzmir Kassam set a new goal to run? A. A wish to celebrate his birthday. B. A personal achievement in sports. C. An earthquake in Turkey and Syria. D. A school movement to collect money. 5. What encouraged Lzmir Kassam to go on when he felt tired? A. The wish to get praise from his family. B. The idea to finish his own running goals. C. The memory of his first half - marathon. D. The thought of the people he was helping. 6. Which two words can describe Lzmir Kassam best? A. Honest and positive B. Kind and determined C. Polite and responsible D. Popular and confident 7. What lesson can be learned from Lzmir’s story? A. People who are good at sports have bigger goals to set. B. It is hard for a person to succeed without the help of others C It’s easy to raise a large amount of money through running. D. Using one’s strong points is a powerful way to help others C The computer is a powerful tool. With it, teachers can improve the classroom experience in a variety of ways. But misuse of the computer will probably result in disadvantages. To investigate the way technology is being used in our school district, I recently spoke with Jeanine Lowell, who teaches social studies at Lake Town Middle School. Mrs. Lowell informed me that computers have helped to increase students’ motivation and prepare them for life in a technological society. “These kids are probably going to be using some kind of computer system when they graduate from high school,” Lowell noted. “It’s important that we provide a proper introduction to them in the classroom.” Lowell also observed that the computers have made it easier to promote different areas of learning, so that students can work on a project or topic that relates to more than one subject. With all of these benefits, however, come a few shortcomings. Although Mrs. Lowell has nearly wallpapered her room with warnings that state: “The computer is NOT A TOY”, not everyone in the class agrees with this idea. Some students get easily distracted (分心) by the internet and are quite good at making it look as if they are doing work when they are really checking their email or watching videos. “You’ve got to be three steps ahead,” she told me, “if you want to stay on top of what they’re actually doing on the computer.” Some schools use some type of blocking software to ensure that students cannot access improper sites at school. More complex programs use a server-based, network-wide program instead of software that runs on personal computers. Research has shown that in a way these server-based blocking programs provide better security, because some students can disable the software on a personal computer. However, there is no replacement for the watchful eye of a good teacher like Jeanine Lowell. There are also no electronic cure-alls for any of education’s many challenges. Technology is a useful tool, but that is all it is: a tool. 8. Where is this passage most likely from? A. A newspaper. B. An advertisement. C. A novel. D. A diary. 9. Which of the following isn’t the benefit of computer use in the classroom? A. Improved motivation in the classroom. B. Opportunities for learning across different subjects. C. Increased preparation for the future use in the workplace. D. Convenience of sharing ideas with people living across the globe. 10. The best way to prevent students from accessing improper sites on school computers is to ______. A. post warning signs throughout the classroom B. use blocking software on personal computers C. monitor what students do on the computers carefully D. use server-based software programs on personal computers 11. What is the writer’s opinion on the use of computers in the classroom? A. It does more harm than good. B. It is only supported by experts. C It contributes to teaching in some way. D. It is more beneficial to teachers than students. D Researchers have developed a new soft robot design that conducts itself with three behaviours at the same time: rolling (翻滚) forward. turning like a record and following a path that goes around a central point. The equipment, which operates without human or computer control, holds promise for developing soft robots that can be used to AA-head and map unknown environments. The new soft robots are called twisted ring-bots They are made of something like the ribbon (缎带) and then joined together at the end to form a ring. When the robots are placed on a surface that is at least 55 degrees Celsius, which is hotter than the surrounding air, one part of the ribbon touching the surface becomes smaller, while one part in the air does not. This induces a rolling movement: the warmer the surface, the faster the robot rolls. “The ribbon rolls on its horizontal axis (横轴) , giving the ring forward strength,” says Jie Yin, a professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering. The twisted ring-bot also turns along its central axis. And as the twisted ring-bot moves forward it travels in a path around a central point, basically moving in a large circle. However, if the twisted ring-bot meets a boundary- like the wall of a box-it will travel along the boundary. The twisted ring-bots are examples of equipment whose behaviour is governed by physical intelligence, meaning their actions are determined by their structural design and the materials they are made of, rather than being directed by a computer or human. “Soft robotics is still a relatively new field.” Yin says. “Finding new ways to control the movement of soft robots in a repeatable and engineered way moves the field forward. And advancing our understanding of what is possible is exciting.” 12. What makes the robot roll faster and faster? A. The ribbon. B. The central axis. C. The shape and material. D. The higher surface temperature. 13. How does the author introduce the new soft robots? A. By explaining the robot’s working ways. B. By quoting experts’ opinions. C. By making some comparisons. D. By offering reasons and results. 14. What is Yin’s attitude towards twisted ring-bots? A. Unclear. B. Favourable. C. Negative. D. Doubtful. 15. What is the best title for the text? A. The New Soft Robots B. Ribbons and Their Rolling C. Three Creative Movements D. Twisted Rings and the Axis Are you sleepy as the afternoon wears on? In my head, I could hear the words my kids kept telling me, “Do it, Mom. You never do anything for yourself. Just follow your dream.” “What are you doing here? You’re a single mom of five. You’re fifty years old!” My thoughts were fighting with my kids’ words. Finally I gathered my courage, stepped into the hall and signed up for drum classes, which was my childhood dream. Wednesday came, and along with it my first drum lesson. I walked through the door and headed directly to the seating area in the back. I kept nervously looking at the time. I tried to slow down my breath. I knew the teacher would say I was not the right type of person to play the drums. I turned around to see an older man looking at me. “Stephanie? I’m Mike, the drum teacher,” he said. People make me nervous. That’s the way I’ve always been. But Mike had a very calm manner, so I relaxed just slightly. Not only did he not tell me that I was the wrong type of person to play the drums, but he praised me for holding the sticks well and following along with him. “You are fine. I see so much potential in you,” he told me. I felt full of excitement and energy. Soon my thirty-minute lesson was over. Walking back to my car, I remembered how many times I had driven my kids to their competitions and had proudly watched them bravely perform in public. Maybe one day I would have the chance to stand on the stage. C. It contributes to teaching in some way. D. It is more beneficial to teachers than students. 8. A 9. D 10. C 11. Twisted Rings and the Axis 【答案】12. D 13. A 14. B 15. I started the car and couldn’t wait to go back home. 46. disappointed nervous jump know praise word return walk take excited class remember As I ______ towards the door, my heart beat fast. I walked through the door and headed directly to the seating area in the back. I kept nervously looking at the time. 根据第四段中“I kept nervously looking at the time.” 根据倒数第三段中“Not only did he not tell me that I was the wrong type of person to play the drums, but he praised me for holding the sticks well and following along with him. 根据倒数第三段中“I felt full of excitement and energy. 根据倒数第二段中“Walking back to my car, I remembered how many times I had driven my kids to their competitions and had proudly watched them bravely perform in public. 根据最后一段“I started the car and couldn’t wait to go back home. 可知,作者开车回家,go back home与return home意思相同,空前有不定式符号to,空处应为动词原形,故填return。 根据第二段“ ‘What are you doing here? You’re a single mom of five. You’re fifty years old!’ My thoughts were fighting with my kids’ words. 可知作者在报名课程之前内心充满了自我怀疑和纠结,她对自己作为五个孩子的单身母亲且已五十岁还要去追求梦想这件事感到不安,体现出她的焦虑和不自信;根据倒数第三段中“Not only did he not tell me that I was the wrong type of person to play the drums, but he praised me for holding the sticks well and following along with him. ‘You are fine. I see so much potential in you,’  he told me. I felt full of excitement and energy. Before taking the class, she was worried/anxious and not confident. You never do anything for yourself. Just follow your dream.’ 可知,孩子的这些话语不断在作者脑海中回响,成为她鼓起勇气报名课程的重要动力,鼓励她去追求自己的梦想及根据倒数第三段中“Not only did he not tell me that I was the wrong type of person to play the drums, but he praised me for holding the sticks well and following along with him. ‘You are fine. I see so much potential in you,’ he told me. Because her kids encouraged her and the drum teacher praised her for her performance. /Because her kids and drum teacher gave her much support. 根据倒数第二段中“Walking back to my car, I remembered how many times I had driven my kids to their competitions and had proudly watched them bravely perform in public. Maybe one day I would have the chance to stand on the stage. 及最后一段“I started the car and couldn’t wait to go back home. She would share her experience/excitement/happiness with her kids in the class and continue to practice. /She would thank her children for encouraging her to follow her dream bravely. Dear schoolmates, I’m so honored to be here to share... ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】Dear schoolmates, I’m so honored here to share my speech about/titled “Time management for study at senior high”.
