For as long as humans have appeared, we have been the smartest species (物种) on Earth. Monkeys know how to use simple tools. Elephants can be taught how to count. But things like art, literature, the Internet, and space travel have only been made possible by the amazing intelligence (智力) of humans. And yet, there are some who believe that we can create machines that can think and feel just like we do. Artificial intelligence, or AI, is defined (定义) by Merriam-Webster as “the ability of a machine to copy intelligent human behaviour”.
AI is around us every day. From Apple’s voice-activated assistant Siri to the software algorithms (算法) that shipping companies use to deal with deliveries, AI is very much a part of our lives.
But why do we try hard to create machines that can think the way we do? AI can make our lives much easier. Imagine being able to be in a car, tell it the place and sit back in comfort as the AI-guided self-driving car takes you there. We’re already getting there——Changsha became the first city in China to roll out self-driving taxis in April 2020. Moreover, AI can control lighting, temperature, and security systems, making homes more comfortable and energy-saving.
However, there are risks (风险). What if we somehow produced an artificial intelligence that was smarter than us? Would they control us? Would they take away our jobs? These are difficult questions that AI researchers ask themselves all the time.
Apart from the risks, it has been already clear that AI is here to stay. Only time will tell if it will lead us into a new age of prosperity (繁荣), or be our end.
25. What can we learn from paragraph 1?
A. Animals are smarter than humans. B. AI can be used in many fields.
C. Space travel is possible because of AI. D. Intelligence makes people special.
26. What is the main idea of paragraph 3?
A. The development of AI. B. The reason of creating AI.
C. The disadvantage of AI. D. The first city to use AI.
27. What does the author suggest about the future of AI?
A. It will certainly lead to prosperity.
B. It will only bring risks and challenges.
C. Only time will tell if it leads to prosperity or an end.
D. It will take away humans’ jobs and control humans.
28. What’s the best title for the passage?
A. How to Use AI B. AI—Good or Bad C. What AI Can Do D. A New Risk—AI

Have you heard about Black Myth: Wukong? As soon as the game came out, it led a new interest in the classic Chinese novel Journey to the West around the world.
The writer of the novel is Wu Cheng’en, who is believed to create it in the 16th century based on older stories and history. The novel is mainly about a Buddhist monk named Xuanzang, takes his disciples (徒弟), including Sun Wukong the “Monkey King” on a journey to find sutras (真经). For centuries, the novel has not only been made into films and TV shows, but also gave rise to a number of common sayings. Most of them show the cleverness and bravery of Wukong.
Eyes of fire and gold In one of chapters, Wukong is locked up in a fire store as punishment after causing a mess in the Heaven. He runs into a room where the fire cannot reach. However, the smoke leaves him with an eye condition called “Fiery Eye”. Wukong’s fiery eyes allow him to see things hidden from ordinary humans, such as monsters who change shapes or become unseen. Nowadays, this phrase generally refers to someone’s ability to discover crime or cheating. For example, his lies seemed perfect, but she still saw through them with her “eyes of fire and gold”.
Transform with a shake of the body “Transforming with a shaking the body” refers a kind of shapeshifting that doesn’t take much effort. The Monkey King learns “Seventy-Two Changes” from Puti Zushi. In the novel, he transforms into a bird, a tree or a temple according to different situations. Today, the phrase is often used to express a great change of situation. For example, with strong support from fairies (精灵), Cinderella transformed into the most beautiful girl at the party.
Shentong Shentong refers to a set of powers. Wukong is the one who has strong powers: a jump with his jindouyun, a magical cloud he rides as a means of transport. What’s more, he has a magic stick with which he beats bad spirits. So this phrase describes a person who has strong powers.
29. Why does the writer ask the question in the first paragraph?

C. To ask readers to talk about the game. D. To get readers to read Journey to the West.
30. From the text, we can find the answer to the question “________”.

People often believe the world of wild animals is full of competition, and even use phrases like the law of the jungle (从林法则) to refer to the crueller side of human society. But to Chen Jianxing, a 45-year-old popular author, it is another story. He has been studying animals for many years and finds animals have unselfish behaviour (行为) and similar emotions (情感), creativity, thinking methods and communication abilities to people.
Recently, Chen has published a book We Are in Africa, which tells his experiences with wild animals in Africa and his thoughts about them. The book introduces dozens of wild animals living in different ecosystems in Africa, from grassland and rainforest, to wetland and island. The book has gained 9.4 points out of 10 on China’s popular review site Douban.
Just as his books inform (告诉) readers, he, himself, has learned from his wild animal friends. For example, he explains in this book his experience with cheetahs (猎豹).
He says although the cheetahs are one of the fastest animals on land, the big cats’ fast running ability leads to a weaker bite force. As a result, they are actually one of the “weaker” animals on the grassland compared with others, and their prey (猎物) is often taken away by lions and other stronger animals.
“Although it’s relatively (相对地) weak, it behaves with no sign of shyness or complaint (抱怨), but always seems confident, moving around in an unhurried way on the grassland, living its best life. That is so attractive to me, and reminds (提醒) me to learn from such an attitude (态度),” says Chen.
33. How does the writer introduce the topic?
A. By telling a story. B. By using comparison. C. By asking questions. D. By giving some facts.
34. What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?
A. Chen’s experiences. B. Chen’s thoughts. C. Chen’s new book. D. Chen’s popularity.
35. Why are cheetahs mentioned in this passage?
A. To show what Chen can learn from them. B. To prove the law of the jungle.
C. To attract readers to read the book. D. To explain why it is the weaker animals.
36. What is TRUE about cheetahs?
A. They have strong bite force. B. They runs fastest on land.
C. They are always in a hurry. D. They have positive attitude.

Accidents often happen in schools around the world. For this reason, the ICRC (红十字国际委员会) began its education program in 2017. First aid training in schools around the world is one of its plans.
Kalida is a 16-year-old student who wants to become a doctor. She lives in Aghdam in Azerbaijan (阿塞拜疆). She took part in ICRC’s first aid training in 2021. One important lesson she learned was that in accidents everyone must take care of themselves first before helping others.
Since attending the training, Kalida has already helped her friend who hurt his hand with broken glass. She even taught some students and her cousins some of the skills. “The training is important, ” Kalida said. “The teachers and students in our school used to know little about first aid. Now we can carry out some of the skills correctly in different situations.”
Marisela teaches at a school in Venezuela (委内瑞拉). The most important thing Marisela learned from the first aid training was to stay calm in order to make her safe at the moment. The training has made her a strong and confident person and an excellent first aider (急救员). She and other teachers have already treated small injuries. Besides, they have taught their students some first aid skills.
Thanks to the ICRC’s first aid training, many students and teachers, like Kalida and Marisela, have become professional first aiders. While bringing these skills back to their families and communities, they will always carry the feeling of safety, confidence and resilience (韧性) within themselves.

【答案】Dear Tom
I’m so sorry to hear that you are having trouble in learning English! It’s common that most of us have problems like this. But don’t be anxious. I hope the following suggestions can help you.
Firstly, I advise you to create an interest in English. If you are interested in English, you will be more active in the English class. You can connect what you have to learn with your hobbies. For example, you can learn new words by singing. Secondly, you should review the textbook as often as possible so that you can’t forget what you have learnt easily. And in this way, you may find the knowledge points that you haven’t mastered. Collect them and check them for several times. Then you’ll get a big surprise. Thirdly, don’t learn English by yourself. You may invite your friends or classmates to be with you. After all, two heads are better than one. Ask your teacher for help if necessary.
In a word, don’t lose your heart. I believe you can make it.
Looking forward to hearing from you soon.
Yours,
Li Hui
