Part Ⅰ. Reading comprehension (32 points in total)
Choose the best answer from A、B or C according to the passage. (10 points)
A
A few years ago a friend gave me a restaurant gift card, and I picked a sunny Sunday afternoon to use it. The meal was delicious, and my family and I were all excited.
The gift card covered almost all of the check (账单). After dinner, I reached into my wallet to get enough cash to cover the rest. I saw two bills (钞票) inside my wallet. The first would just cover the rest of the check. The second would allow me to cover the check and give the waitress a nice tip. I planned to pick the first one.
At that moment, my mind flashed back to 30 years ago. I was working as a busboy (餐厅勤杂工) in a restaurant. I had to work long hours of hard work for low pay at that time. I remembered seeing the waitresses worrying about how they were going to pay the rent. I remembered the pain in their eyes and the sadness on their faces at the end of each month. I blinked (眨眼睛) to hide my sadness and smiled at the waitress, pushing the smaller bill back down. Then I picked out the larger bill. I folded it around the gift card and covered both of them with the check. As we all got up from the table, I handed them to the hard-working waitress. “You keep the change,” I said with a smile and happiness.
We are family in this world. Do your best to be kind. Do your best to be a good person and replace suffering with joy.

Whether yellow, red or white, the onion is a vegetable that you may not know well. The list of its uses in cooking is endless. People have used onions to add flavor (味道) to their foods for thousands of years. Besides onions’ great taste, they are very good for you. They have special chemicals that improve your ability to fight off sickness and you have fewer chances of getting a disease.
No matter how good onions are for you, it is difficult to cut an onion without your eyes filling with tears! When you cut into an onion, irritating (刺激性的) chemicals inside the onion will get into the air. They touch your whole eyes and cause pain. Your eyes make tears to wash away the chemicals and protect your eyes.
Luckily, cooks and scientists have discovered some ways to keep you from crying when you cut up onions:
·Cut the onion under running water. The water will wash away the chemicals before they can reach your eyes.
·Use a fan to blow air over the onion as you cut it. The air will blow the chemicals away from your eyes.
·Put the onion in a fridge for an hour before cutting. This helps make the chemicals in the onion move slowly, so they may not ever reach your eyes.
If you try out these good ideas and still cry while cutting onions, don’t worry. Scientists think if you cut more onions, your body will become more resilient to the onion’s chemicals. So the tears will not last long. If you think about how healthy onions are, you might even call those tears “happy tears”.

Hello, everyone. I’m here today to tell you something about my life as an exchange student in the United States last year.
America was a big culture shock for me at first. I stayed with a host family in a small town. My host parents were very kind. They organized a lot of activities for me in my free time so that I wouldn’t miss home.
However, life in the US was different from what I had imagined. I knew little English when I arrived, but luckily after two months’ study, the language began to come to me. School was also completely different from what I had expected—much harder. I had to study Greek which I didn’t understand totally at first. The food, too, was different. I really missed barbecue. It was very famous in Qiqihar.
It was an exciting year, and it was a valuable education for me. I understood more about American culture. My American friends asked me many questions about life in China, and this made me think about my own culture as well. Now I am back in China, I still remember the life in the US.
11. The writer now is in America.
12. The host parents were very friendly.
13. The host family always had barbecue.
14. American friends’ questions about life in China made the writer think about his own culture.
15. It was very easy for the writer to get used to the life in the US.
