Scientists believe the Earth is 4.6 billion years old. However, the mountains, valleys (山谷), hills, rivers, deserts and forests we see today are much younger than that. For example, Mount Qomolangma is about 60 million years old and the Amazon rainforest is only 10 million years old. The youngest sea in the world is the Baltic Sea, at about 15,000 years old.
The Earth is always changing because of volcanoes (火山), earthquakes and of course, wind and rain. Some of these changes are very slow and others are quick. Water and ice can make very great changes to the planet. For example, glaciers (rivers of ice) can cut through mountains and make lakes and deep valleys. Many volcanoes are under the oceans and sometimes they become new islands. This is happening in the South Pacific, near Tonga.
It’s normal for our planet to change, but at the moment, scientists think it’s changing faster than usual. Some deserts are growing and many forests are getting smaller. The weather is getting wetter in some places and drier in others, and there are more big storms. According to the research, the sea level will continue to rise in the next hundred years. As a result, many cities will possibly be covered by water and much of the most productive farming areas will be lost. Some island countries are likely to disappear on the map of the world.
These changes will bring great harm to the planet. However, they can be beneficial to some people. For example, as the Arctic is getting warmer, some people in Greenland now own businesses and sell vegetables they grow on their land. That wasn’t possible in the far north 50 years ago. Farmers in Greenland like the warm weather and hope it will continue.
43. How does the writer describe the changes of the Earth in Paragraph 2?
A. By giving examples. B. By listing numbers.
C. By telling stories. D. By using sayings.
44. What can we learn from Paragraph 3?
A. The age of the Earth. B. Problems for the planet.
C. The life of the farmers. D. Influences on the mountains.
45. What does the underlined word “beneficial” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. harmful B. normal C. helpful D. uncomfortable

Clara Daly was sitting on an Alaska Airlines flight from Boston to Los Angeles when she heard a worried voice over the loudspeaker, “Does anyone on board know American Sign Language?”
Clara, 15 years old at that time, pressed the call button (按钮). An air hostess came by and explained the situation. “We have a passenger on the plane who’s blind and deaf,” she said. The passenger (乘客) seemed to want something, but he was traveling alone and the air hostesses couldn’t understand what he needed.
Clara had been studying ASL for the past year to help blind and deaf people and she knew she’d be able to finger spell into the man’s palm (手掌). So she rose from her seat, walked toward the front of the plane, and knelt (跪) by the seat of the old man named Tim Cook. Gently taking his hand, she signed, “How are you? Are you OK?” Cook asked for some water.
When the water arrived, Clara returned to her seat. She came by again a bit later because he wanted to know the time. On her third visit, she stopped and stayed for a while.
“He didn’t need anything. He was lonely and wanted to talk,” Clara said.
So for the next hour, she “talked” about her family and her plans for the future. Cook “told” Clara how he had become blind over time and shared stories of his days as a traveling salesman. Even though he couldn’t see her, she “looked attentively at his face with such kindness”, a passenger reported.
“Clara was amazing,” an air hostess said in an interview. “You could tell Cook was very excited to have someone he could speak to, and she was such an angel.”

A. Because he was hungry and thirsty. B. Because he needed someone to talk to.

Why are some people successful and others aren’t? What’s the secret of success? You can get the answers in Malcolm Gladwell’s book Outliers.
Gladwell thinks practice makes you good. The “10,000-hour rule” is central to the book. It means that if you want to be among the best in the world, you need to practise something for 10,000 hours, about three hours a day for 10 years. For example, the Beatles practised playing music in Hamburg more than 1,200 times between 1960 and 1964, which is more than 10,000 hours of playing time.
Gladwell also thinks that intelligence (智力) alone will not lead to success. Christopher Langan, who is mentioned in the book, got an IQ of between 195 and 210. As a boy at school, Langan passed an exam in a foreign language after looking through a text book for three minutes. But Langan never made any achievements his whole life. This shows that besides intelligence, you need hard work, support and chances.
However, it isn’t just a question of time and support. According to the book, you still need luck. Of course, many people say that you can create your own “luck” if you’re active enough.
So, are you putting in the hours? Carry on! You could get lucky!
50. Why did the writer ask questions in the first paragraph?
A. To ask others for help. B. To list some examples.
C. To draw readers’ attention. D. To introduce successful people.
51. How long do you need to practise something in order to succeed?
A. 3 hours. B. 10 years. C. 4 years. D. 10,000 hours.
52. What can we learn from Christopher Langan?
A. Intelligence alone will not lead to success.
B. Success has nothing to do with hard work.
C. Whether we will succeed depends on our IQ.
D. We can learn a foreign language well in minutes.
【答案】50. C 51. D 52. A

46. What was the air hostesses’ problem?
A. They had a very difficult passenger. B. They couldn’t understand the passenger.
C. They didn’t know the passenger’s name. D. They didn’t have what the passenger wanted.
47. Why did Clara Daly believe she could help?
A. Because she happened to learn some ASL.
B. Because she had helped people like Cook.
C. Because she thought she might know Cook.
D. Because her grandfather had the same problem.
48. Why did Tim Cook keep asking for service?
A. Because he was hungry and thirsty. B. Because he needed someone to talk to.
C. Because he was afraid of taking planes. D. Because he was interested in Clara’s story.
49. Which of the following words best describe Clara Daly?
A. Beautiful and lovely. B. Outgoing and friendly.

A young fish, named Mimo, loved collecting pebbles(鹅卵石)and those little shiny stones could be found at the bottom of the ocean. He spent all of his time looking for them.
One day, an old fish said to him, “You cannot spend your whole day searching for little pebbles. There is a whole world out there for you to learn about!”
But Mimo didn’t listen at all.
Early one morning, while the other fish were still sleeping, Mimo went for a swim. He came upon a pile(堆)of pebbles.
Excited about his find, he started bringing the pebbles back to his home one by one.
Just as he was making his last trip, he saw a shadow(影子). It was a big, ugly lion fish-the most dangerous fish that he had ever met.
Suddenly, the lion fish started catching the young fish. Very quickly, Mimo realized that the only way he could escape was to drop the pebble, and swim away as fast as he could.
