There are plenty of children, however, who do not have their own toy collection. This is where you can make a difference by doing your part to support children in need. To make this easier, we’ve rounded up a list of organizations that are always on the lookout for toy donations (捐赠). Second Chance Toys Founded in 2006, Second Chance Toys recycles plastic toys and donates them to community organizations that service children in need. The organization partners with a number of drop-off locations across the U. S. You can find a location near you, register as a donor (捐赠人), sign up for a time to drop off your toys, and you’re good to go! The organization only accepts clean plastic toys with no small or missing parts. Ronald McDonald House The Ronald McDonald House houses thousands of children and families who experience severe medical care. The organization does not accept used toys, but if you have any new and unopened toys, you can donate them to one of hundreds of locations across the U. S. Stuffed Animals for Emergencies Stuffed Animals for Emergencies (SAFE)accepts stuffed animal donations and gives them to children in need who have faced difficult times. SAFE accepts new and used toys, no matter how old they are. The organization also accepts donations of old items like blankets, books and kids clothes. You can find a chapter in your area and sign up to host a stuffed animal drive. 1. How can people donate toys to Second Chance Toys? A. By mailing toys directly to a location. B. By scheduling a drop-off time for toys. C. By donating toys at an organized event. D. By finding a partner at a nearby location. 2. Where can people donate used books according to this text? A. Second Chance Toys. B. Ronald McDonald House. C. Stuffed Animals for Emergencies. D. All locations across the U. S. 3. What do the three organizations have in common? A. They recycle toys from sellers. B. They have locations worldwide. C. They accept toys to help children. D. They are set up by local communities. B 2. C 3. 根据Stuffed Animals for Emergencies部分中的“The organization also accepts donations of old items like blankets, books and kids clothes. 根据首段中的“As kids grow up, there’s a good chance that — if you’re a parent — you have a surplus of toys in your home. There are plenty of children, however, who do not have their own toy collection. This is where you can make a difference by doing your part to support children in need. To make this easier, we’ve rounded up a list of organizations that are always on the lookout for toy donations (捐赠). B I was scared when a loud noise in my apartment woke me in the middle of the night. I rushed to turn on my bedroom light and discovered it was a cat. Here’s the thing — I do not have a cat. And this was not the first time this particular cat had demanded my attention. I immediately calmed down and realized my error — I had left a window open. I approached to entertain my house-guest by giving her some treats and a scratch under her collar (颈圈). Like so many others, I shifted from working in an office to working from home. Living alone can be isolating at the best of times. It was around the one-month mark of the lockdown when I heard a meow outside my window. Sitting outside on the grass was a long-haired, golden-colored cat. I opened the window, and this beautiful cat jumped into my home. Her short visit brightened my day. A few days later, I heard a familiar meow. I saw a name tag on her collar: Mika. On this second visit, I also noticed Mika was cross-eyed, which only made her more lovely. Over the next few weeks, Mika would stop by occasionally. Sometimes, she only stayed for a few minutes; other times, she would wander around my apartment much longer. Each visit brightened me. Mika even helped me connect with some new neighbors, who asked if Mika was my cat. Apparently, Mika visited them as well. While the lockdown has been awful, I suspect I might not have ever met Mika if it had not happened. But perhaps she came by at this time because she sensed a need for connection on my part. While dogs are said to be man’s best friend, a good cat can be everyone’s best friend. 4. What do we know about the cat from the first three paragraphs? A. She used to go out at night. B. She entered through the window. C. She annoyed the neighbors badly. D. She liked the author’s treats particularly. 5. How did the author probably feel during the lockdown? A. Lonely. B. Mad. C. Heart-broken. D. Absent-minded. 6. What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 7 refer to? A. The open window. B. The lockdown. C. A need for connection. D. A stay with new neighbors. 7. What does the author want to express through the text? A. He lives an unusual life. B. He longs for a harmonious society. C. Keeping cats is rewarding. D. Befriending nice cats is worthwhile. B 5. A 6. B 7. 根据第一段“I rushed to turn on my bedroom light and discovered it was a cat. (我急忙打开卧室的灯,发现是一只猫)”以及第三段“I immediately calmed down and realized my error — I had left a window open. 根据第四段“Living alone can be isolating at the best of times. It was around the one⁃month mark of the lockdown when I heard a meow outside my window. 故选A。 根据第七段“While the lockdown has been awful, I suspect I might not have ever met Mika if it had not happened. 根据全文内容以及最后一段“While dogs are said to be man’s best friend, a good cat can be everyone’s best friend. D。 C It is well-known that earthquake is one of the most serious natural disasters. Because of its sudden nature, the traditional earthquake prediction method is often difficult to predict it accurately, and has always been a difficult problem in the field of earth science. Recently, artificial intelligence is showing promise in earthquake prediction, challenging the long-held belief that it is impossible. Researchers at the University of Texas, Austin, have developed an AI algorithm (算法) that correctly predicted 70% of earthquakes a week in advance during a trial in China and provided accurate strength calculations (强度计算) for the predicted earthquakes. The research team believes their method succeeded because they used a relatively simple machine learning approach. The AI was provided with a set of statistical features based on the team’s knowledge of earthquake physics (地震物理学), and then instructed to train itself using a five-year database of earthquake recordings. Once trained, the Al provided its prediction by listening for signs of incoming earthquakes within the background sounds in the Earth. This work is clearly a milestone in research for AI-driven earthquake prediction. “You don’t see earthquakes coming,” explains Alexandros Savvaidis, a senior research scientist who leads the Texas Seismological Network Program (TexNet). “It’s a matter of milliseconds, and the only thing you can control is how prepared you are. Even with the 70% accuracy, that’s a huge result and could help minimize economic and human losses and possibly improve earthquake preparation worldwide.” While it is unknown whether the same approach will work at other locations, the researchers are confident that their AI algorithm could produce more accurate predictions if used in areas with reliable earthquake tracking networks. The next step is to test artificial intelligence in Texas, since UT’s Bureau TexNet has locations and over six years worth of continuous records, making it an ideal location in 300 earthquakes for these purposes. Eventually, the authors hope to combine the system with physics-based models. This strategy could prove especially important where data is poor or lacking. “That may be a long way off, but many advances such as this one, are what moves science forward,” says Scott Tinker, the bureau’s director. 8. What can we infer from the passage? A. AI can predict earthquakes accurately. B. AI is provided with accurate strength calculations. C. AI can prevent the potential earthquakes from coming. D. AI forecasts earthquakes by analyzing background sounds. 9. What makes Texas a better place to do the follow-up tests? A. Building many earthquake stations. B. Over ten years of continuous records. C. Reliable earthquake tracing networks. D. Researcher’s confidence in the technology. 10. What is the author’s attitude to the AI algorithm? A. Indifferent. B. Supportive. C. Disapproving. D. Doubtful. 11. What’s the main idea of the text? A. AI helps reduce possible earthquakes by 70%. B. AI predicts earthquakes with a certain accuracy. C. AI algorithm improves earthquake preparation worldwide. D. AI algorithm produces accurate predictions about earthquakes. D 9. C 10. B 11. 根据第二段中“Once trained, the Al provided its prediction by listening for signs of incoming earthquakes within the background sounds in the Earth.(经过训练后,AI通过监听地球背景声音中即将到来的地震迹象来提供预测)”可知,AI通过分析背景声音来预测地震。 根据第四段中“The next step is to test artificial intelligence in Texas, since UT’s Bureau TexNet has locations and over six years worth of continuous records, making it an ideal location in 300 earthquakes for these purposes.(下一步是在德克萨斯州测试人工智能,因为UT的德克萨斯州地震局网络计划拥有多个站点和超过六年的连续记录,这使其成为进行此类研究的理想地点,涉及约300次地震)”可知,是因为有可靠的地震追踪网络和持续的记录,使得德克萨斯成为进行后续测试的更好地点。 根据全文内容及第一段中“Recently, artificial intelligence is showing promise in earthquake prediction, challenging the long-held belief that it is impossible. Researchers at the University of Texas, Austin, have developed an AI algorithm (算法) that correctly predicted 70% of earthquakes a week in advance during a trial in China and provided accurate strength calculations (强度计算) for the predicted earthquakes.(最近,人工智能在地震预测方面显示出了希望,挑战了人们长期以来认为这是不可能的信念。 B。 D When I mentioned to some friends that we all have accents (口音), most of them proudly replied, “Well, I speak perfect English/ Chinese/ etc." But this kind of response makes me fail to understand the true meaning of accents. Usually, what we mean when we say someone “has an accent” is that their accent is different from the local one, or that pronunciations are different from our own. But this definition of accents is limiting and could give rise to prejudice. Funnily enough, in terms of the language study, every person speaks with an accent. It is the regular differences in how we produce sounds that define our accents. Even if you don’t hear it yourself, you speak with some sort of accent. In this sense, it’s pointless to point out that someone “has an accent”. We all do! Every person speaks a dialect (方言), too. In the field of language study, a dialect is a version of a language that is characterized by its variations of structure, phrases and words. For instance, “You got eat or not?” (meaning “Have you eaten?”) is an acceptable and understood question in Singapore Oral English. The fact that this expression would cause a standard American English speaker to take pause doesn’t mean that Singapore Oral English is “wrong” or “ungrammatical”. The sentence is well-formed and clearly communicative, according to native Singapore English speakers’ solid system of grammar. Why should it be wrong just because it’s different? We need to move beyond a narrow conception of accents and dialects — for the benefit of everyone. Language differences like these provide deep understandings into people’s cultural experiences and backgrounds. In a global age, the way one speaks is definitely a part of one’s identity. Most people would be happy to talk about the cultures behind their speech. We’d learn more about the world we live in and make friends along the way. 12. What does the author think of his/ her friends’ response in paragraph 1? A. It reflects their self-confidence. B. It reflects their language levels. C. It misses the point of communication. D. It misses the real meaning of accents. 13. Why does the author use the example of Singapore Oral English? A. To support the use of dialects. B. To show the diversity of dialects. C. To correct a grammatical mistake. D. To highlight a traditional approach. 14. What does the author recommend us to do in the last paragraph? A. Learn to speak with your local dialect. B. Seek for an official definition of accents. C. Appreciate the value of accents and dialects. D. Distinguish our local languages from others’. 15. What can be a suitable title for this passage? A. Everyone Has an Accent B. Accents Weaken Our Uniqueness C. Dialects Lead to Misunderstanding D. Standard English Is at Risk 【答案】12. D 13. A 14. C 15. A 【解析】 【导语】本文是一篇议论文。主要论述了每个人都有口音。从这个意义上说,指出某人“有口音”是毫无意义的。语言差异可以帮助人们洞察他人的文化经历和背景,因此我们要欣赏口音和方言的价值。 【12题详解】 推理判断题。根据第一段“When I mentioned to some friends that we all have accents, most of them proudly replied, “Well, I speak perfect English/ Chinese/ etc." But this kind of response makes me fail to understand the true meaning of accents.(当我跟一些朋友提到我们每个人说话都有口音时,他们中的大多数人都自豪地回答:“哦,我说的是标准的英语或汉语等等。” 但这种回应让我无法理解口音的真正含义。)”可知,作者认为他或她的朋友的回应忽略了口音的真正含义。故选D。 【13题详解】 推理判断题。根据第三段第一句“Every person speaks a dialect, too. (每个人也会说一种方言。)”及本段后文“American English speaker to take pause doesn’t mean that Singapore Oral English is “wrong” or “ungrammatical”. The sentence is well-formed and clearly communicative, according to native Singapore English speakers’ solid system of grammar. Why should it be wrong just because it’s different?(以美式英语为母语的人会停顿,这并不意味着新加坡英语口语是 “错误的” 或 “不合语法的”。按照新加坡英语母语者自成体系的语法规则,这个句子结构规范,表意清晰。仅仅因为它与众不同,就该被视为错误吗?)”可知,作者认为不能因为它不同就认为它是错的。所以作者使用新加坡口语的例子是为了证明使用方言是可以接受的。故选A。 【14题详解】 推理判断题。根据最后一段“Language differences like these provide deep understandings into people’s cultural experiences and backgrounds. In a global age, the way one speaks is definitely a part of one’s identity. Most people would be happy to talk about the cultures behind their speech. We’d learn more about the world we live in and make friends along the way.(诸如此类的语言差异能让我们深入了解人们的文化经历和背景。在全球化时代,一个人的说话方式无疑是其身份认同的一部分。大多数人会很乐意谈论自己语言背后的文化。这样一来,我们会更多地了解我们所生活的世界,还能在这个过程中交到朋友。)”可知, 作者在最后一段中建议我们欣赏口音和方言的价值。故选C。 【15题详解】 主旨大意题。根据第二段“In this sense, it’s pointless to point out that someone “has an accent”. We all do! (从这个意义上说,指出某人“有口音”是毫无意义的。我们都有!)”以及第三段“Every person speaks a dialect, too. (每个人也会说一种方言。)”可知,作者认为每个人都有口音,而且作者在最后一段指出不同的口音可以让我们更多地了解我们生活的世界,并在这一过程中结交朋友。故A项“Everyone Has an Accent (每个人都有口音)”最能概括本文主旨。故选A。 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 A powerful magnitude 7.1 temblor rocked Southern California at 8:19 PT on July 5, 2019, just 34 hours after a magnitude 6.4 earthquake hit the same area. This latest event was widely felt. ____16____Aftershocks are expected to continue. Earthquakes are also called temblors. ____17____It’s hard to imagine they happen by the thousands every day around the world, usually in the form of small tremors. Some 80% of all the planet’ s earthquakes happen along the rim (边缘) of the Pacific Ocean.____18____That is because of a lot of volcanic activity there, as well. Scientists give a magnitude rating to earthquakes based on the strength and duration of their seismic (地震的) waves. A magnitude of 3 to 4.9 is considered minor or light; 5 to 6.9 is moderate (中等的) to strong; 7 to 7.9 is major; and 8 or more is great. ___19___Some 10,000 people die in earthquakes every year. Earthquakes may also lead to other natural disasters. Smaller temblors that usually happen in the days following a large earthquake can cause further death and damage. ___20___ A. It is called the “Ring of Fire”. B. They can cause huge damage. C. Protect yourself as quickly as possible. D. In fact, a magnitude 8 quake strikes somewhere every year. E. Loss of life can be avoided through planning and education. F. One important way is to try to make your home as safe as possible. G. It caused several fires and damage to buildings and roads in Ridgecrest and nearby. 【答案】16. G 17. B 18. A 19. D 20. A. C It is well-known that earthquake is one of the most serious natural disasters. 8. AI algorithm improves earthquake preparation worldwide. D. AI algorithm produces accurate predictions about earthquakes. D When I mentioned to some friends that we all have accents (口音), most of them proudly replied, “Well, I speak perfect English/ Chinese/ etc." But this kind of response makes me fail to understand the true meaning of accents.
