Liu Guoliang, a scientist, discovered that plastic is similar to the fatty acid (脂肪酸) that is used to make soap. He believed that it should be possible to change plastic into the fatty acid, and then into soap. But the problem was that plastic is large, but the fatty acid is much smaller. That night, he watched the smoke rise from the fire and thought about how smoke was made up of very small pieces. Then he wondered whether burning plastic could work the same way. Liu and his team built a tool for safely burning plastic and successfully used it to turn plastic into soap. It was the world’s first soap made from plastic. Liu’s method works on polyethylene and polypropylene, the most common plastics. They make up about half of all plastic waste: nearly 200 million tons a year. The method also works on “end-of-life” plastics that cannot be recycled through usual methods. Still, Liu doesn’t think this is the best way to avoid plastic pollution. People started to worry if migratory birds would return again. In 1984, the Hongtupo Forest Police Station was set up. The officers worked on the mountain, trying to find migratory birds and stop people from hunting them. The job was really difficult. They might lose their way or meet dangerous animals. The officers also tried to tell villagers the importance of protecting birds and other wild animals. They visited the villagers door to door and helped them with farm work. They even organized activities in schools to get their messages across to children. Now, even children know that birds are to be loved. The mountain is greener, the water is clearer, and more and more animals come to live here. It has become a bird-protecting mountain. However, it is very hard for some people to make friends and they often feel lonely. What’s the reason behind that? According to a new study from Chicago University, the reason is that this kind of people have brains different from common people, and they often feel unsafe when facing strangers. Does that mean they have no ways to become happy again? No, don’t worry. Scientists of these studies have thought up ways to help these people deal with their problem. They provided some steps for them to make friends. The first step is to accept social invitations, even if you don’t want to go, it’s not enough for people just getting touch with others online. That’s because most people don’t show their true themselves there. One of these studies scientists say another step is to get an action plan. As the old saying goes, actions speak louder than words. People need to be active to communicate with others and communicating with people with the same interest makes it more possible to have friends last. Try to expect the best from each activity. At that night, my father told me my mother cooked some dishes in the restaurant to buy this bike. Although it was not the one that I wanted, it was my mother’s love.
