I have spent nearly 10 years learning mechanics (机械学) by myself at home. I have always tried to make people trust me. However, this past year I have finally gotten to where I feel I will be!
I started out this year having just taken another factory job with $13.50 an hour and lived a difficult life.
Three months ago, my neighbors bought a used Harley motorcycle (哈雷摩托) that everyone thought could hardly be repaired well. After taking a look at it, I said that I would be able to repair it. It turned out that I saved them the $2,000 that they expected to pay to rebuild it. They were satisfied and told many of their friends about me. I got a lot of new business just by word of mouth. In about two months, I had over twenty people coming to me for work and I was making good money. I was making thousands a month on the side on a good month. But because of instability (不稳定) of the work, I still couldn’t leave my day job at that point.
Then I got a job through one of my customers. I was able to solve difficult problems quickly. He was so pleased with it that he offered me another job that started even higher—$17 an hour. I finally made some progress.
In a year, I went from being the lowest level worker to having bosses invite me to work for them. Now I can honestly say I feel truly proud of myself and my skills.

Inventions, mostly, change the world for good. Countless inventions not only help human beings at that moment but also encourage many other inventions. Let’s see some new inventions.
Maybe you need to go to a sports hall to play table tennis because you may not have a suitable table at home. What if the door of your room could be turned into a tennis table? German designer Tobias Franzel designed the Ping Pong Door. It can be built to fit your door. Open the door and enjoy the game!
Do you ever feel unsafe when you are out by yourself? A US company made a small alarm called Birdie+. You can keep it in your hand. It has a small handle (柄) and a button (按钮). If you pull out the handle, it will make a really loud noise and give out a flashing light so other people will notice you. If you press the button, it will call your family and even the police to help you.
Noise-canceling earphones (降噪耳机) can help you clear all noises. However, it can be dangerous when you are walking on busy streets. Now, US scientists have used AI to allow users to pick the sound they want to hear. They can choose from 20 kinds of sounds, such as bird sounds, baby cries and people’s voices. The tool lets them hear nothing but the sound they have picked. The scientists successfully tested the AI system in different environments such as offices, streets and parks.
Inventions make our life easier and better. Do you want to be an inventor like Thomas Edison?
9. We can play ping-pong on ________ at home with the help of Tobias Franzel’s design.

Working outdoors can be harmful for your skin (皮肤). A United Nations report says it’s connected with skin cancer. The World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Labour Organization (ILO) say that working in the sun can lead to a type of skin cancer called non- melanoma.
This health problem is caused by the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays (紫外线). Recent scientific research found that nearly one in three people who die from this type of cancer often worked outdoors. The results, according to seven years of worldwide information, show that UV rays from the sun are a major reason for work-related cancer. Jobs in agriculture (农业), building, and fishing are the most affected. Even though fewer people work in direct sunlight now, the number of skin cancer cases from outdoor work has gone up greatly.
Almost 2,000 million workers worldwide are at risk, with many cases in developing countries, even more than in wealthier countries. This changes what we thought about skin cancer being mostly in richer countries.
Researchers say we need better rules at work to protect outdoor workers. This means planning work timetables to avoid the midday sun, providing shaded (阴凉的) areas, making protective clothing a must, and telling people to use sunscreen. Besides, getting early cancer checks is very important.
To help workers more, the report says skin cancers from working in the sun should be listed as workplace illnesses in each country. This way, those affected can ask for payment, and it shows we need to change how we deal with work-related health problems.
13. What do we know about the recent scientific research?
A. About 30% of outdoor workers die from skin cancer.
B. It collected seven-year information all over the world.
C. The sun is the most important cause of all the cancers.
D. More and more people worked a long time in the sunlight.
14. What can we learn about skin cancer cases among outdoor workers?
A. They remained unchanged. B. They were reduced greatly.
C. They changed our thoughts. D. They worried rich countries.
15. What do researchers advise outdoor workers to do in paragraph 4?
A. Avoid working outside. B. Wear special clothing.
C. Get cancer checks daily. D. Provide free sunscreen.
16. What is the purpose of the text?
A. To draw public attention to the work-related health problems.
B. To report the health problems about some outdoor jobs.
C. To give advice on how to greatly improve public health.
D. To explain the different reasons for work-related diseases.

When thinking about our health, we find many things we can do are harder. Reading is one of the easier ones. You can do it in comfortable clothes, in a comfortable chair, or when the weather is terrible outside. You don’t need a membership or special things, and you get the idea.
Here are a number of ways that reading can better our health.
Reading can reduce stress.
In one study, reading was found to be as useful as running or humor in reducing bad feelings. This means that reading influences your physical as well as your psychological (心理上的) health. It doesn’t matter if you read something about fishing, or the experiences shared by others. The more enjoyable it is to you, the better. Turn down other programs while reading on phones or computers.
Reading can protect brain health.
Reading is good for not just kids but adults. In a study of persons aged 64 and over, those reading at least once a week had better abilities to remember something than those not. At a study for 14 years, those reading more enjoyed greater protection. What’s better, readers may live longer than non-readers.
The benefits of reading are many. If you aren’t a natural reader, you have nothing to lose by giving it a try.

Dear Ben,
I’m glad to hear that you’re interested in northeastern Putonghua and have been learning it for two years. It’s fine if you’re still finding it challenging to speak like a native speaker. I’m happy to share some simple tips that might help you improve.
Firstly, try to practice speaking every day. You can go to the community to chat with the elderly. They have plenty of free time, which makes them great conversation partners and can be very helpful in your language practice. Secondly, you can watch TV dramas and listen to songs in northeastern Putonghua. This will help you understand how people naturally speak. In addition, try to find a friend who speaks northeastern Putonghua well. People from the Northeast are very warm-hearted, and they would be perfectly willing to help you learn their dialect.
Remember, it’s okay to make mistakes. That’s how we learn. Keep trying and don’t give up. I truly believe you’ll make great progress!
Wishing you all the best on your language-learning journey!
Li Hua
