Christmas is quite nearly here. For the last few weeks, families around the world have been busy putting up Christmas decorations. What are some of the most popular ones?
Gingerbread (姜饼) houses are pretty common. Kids especially like building these houses. They take pieces of gingerbread and “glue” them together with sweet frosting (糖霜). Then, they use small pieces of candy to decorate the house. The houses are about the size of a dollhouse. Kids can eat them after building them.
Christmas trees are an important part of the holiday as well. Their branches (树枝) are covered with decorations such as strings (串) of popcorn and shining lights. The trees’ smaller branches can be used to make another kind of decoration: a wreath (花环).
People make Christmas wreaths out of bits of greenery, such as small tree branches. The circle-shaped wreaths are then decorated with red bows (领结) or bulbs. The green wreaths remind us that spring will return.

Are you good with money? Do you get pocket money from your parents or do you work to earn money? Read on to find out about British teenagers and their cash!
Pocket money
Most teenagers in Britain receive pocket money from their parents. They might have to do chores to get their pocket money. These chores can include cleaning, cooking, washing dishes, and ironing.
Part-time work
A part-time job is a choice for teenagers who don’t have pocket money or who want to earn more money. About 15 percent of teenagers have a job. Only children over the age of 13 can work. Popular part-time jobs for teens include babysitting, delivering newspapers, shop work and restaurant work.
Children in Britain can work a maximum of two hours a day on a school day but not during school hours. During weekends and school holidays, they can work longer hours.
Bank account
Some children and teenagers have a bank account. There is no legal (法定的) age limit (限制) at which you can open a bank account (账户), but a bank manager can decide whether to open an account for a child or young person. Parents can put pocket money directly into their child’s bank account.
So, many teenagers are becoming a financially (财政上) independent person and earning and looking after your own money.

When I was a kid, I always used to wonder how in the world my father worked outside in the winter without a coat. It could be minus 20 degrees centigrade and there be Dad, removing snow, or perhaps cutting some wood—his coat thrown aside—wearing a shirt, a cap, and a pair of gloves.
“Aren’t you cold, Dad?” I’d ask. “No,” Dad would reply. “I’m not cold—working too hard to be cold. ” Many times I wondered whether my father was an extremely tough man, or whether he was foolish.
One time when I was quite young, perhaps five or so, I went ice fishing with Dad. It was a bright, clear day—and badly cold. After we’d been out on the ice for a little while, my feet started getting cold. “Daddy, my feet are cold.” I said.
“Yeah, it’s cold out here today.” he replied, “Walk around. Make some circles in the snow. See how many different patterns you can make. That will get your feet warm.”
I was just a little girl at the time but I remember thinking, “How in the world will walking around in the snow make my feet warm? Dad must be out of mind.”
But he was my father, after all. I made circles in the snow. I made squares. Pretty soon I was having so much fun making patterns in the snow. I forgot about my feet being cold.
Now, all these years later, I know, too, from personal experience how my father was able to take his coat off and work outside in the winter wearing just a shirt, a cap and gloves. Because I do it, too. “Aren’t you cold?” my husband asked one winter day. “No,” I replied. “I’m not cold—working too hard to be cold.” I hope my husband has decided I’m both tough and smart. But I guess quite a bit of the time he thinks I’m foolish.
Wherever Dad is in that great big farm in the sky-I’m sure he can’t help but smile whenever I take my coat off while I’m working outside in the winter.
13. When the writer was a kid, she didn’t understand ________.
A. what her father had done outside the house
B. why her father liked ice fishing in winter
C. why her father worked all day without feeling tired
D. why her father worked in cold with a single shirt
14. What does her father advised her to do when the writer’s feet felt cold?
A. Go home by herself first. B. Keep running in the snow.
C. Make circles in the snow. D. Light a fire on the ice.
15. What kind of feeling does the writer want to show to her father in this passage?
A. Doubt. B. Blame. C. Understand. D. Question.
16. When the writer was taking her coat off while she’s working outside in the winter, she thought her dad would be ________.
A. sad B. happy C. regret D. angry

Reading can not only bring us knowledge but also open our eyes. The more we read, the more we will learn.
As for me, I like reading. I once read a traditional Chinese book Journey to the West. It tells a story of Tangseng and his group members travelling to the west. The main character is Sun Wukong. He is not a normal monkey, because he can make 72 changes. He is clever and keeps fighting to help the weak. They met with lots of difficulties but they never gave up and succeeded at last. Their spirit encourages me and improves myself. I advise that everyone should read more books, especially classics so that we can introduce our traditional Chinese culture to the world.
Let’s start reading now. Let reading become part of our life and we will be more confident!
