Several months ago, an old man in Dalian failed to travel by underground. At the station, he was asked to show his health QR code (二维码) on the smartphone. “What is a QR code?” the old man asked. “I have money to buy a ticket. Why do I need a smartphone?” In the end, he had to leave the station.
Over 10 years ago, people still had to leave their house to buy a train ticket or pay their bills. Now all these can be done with a smartphone, and, in some cases, only with a smartphone. On one hand, the fast development of science and technology is making our life easier. But on the other hand, it is creating problems for old people.
Many old people have devoted (奉献) their whole life to working for the society (社会), but now it seems the society had left them behind. What can be done to make a difference? Some volunteers are trying to help. They teach the elderly to use smartphones. However, it only helps to solve part of the problem.
Many old people have physical problems. Poor eyesight makes reading on small screens difficult. And their less sensitive (灵敏的) fingers make it hard for them to use touch screens. Perhaps these are problems that smartphone makers should try to deal with.
Moreover, if you have grandparents or know some elderly people, lend a helping hand to them when they need it. And remember to be patient. Technologies that you think are easy to learn may be a huge problem for them.

Tai Chi has always been a symbol of Chinese culture and is becoming popular around the world.
One thing that makes Tai Chi popular is its value in health. According to Harvard Health, Tai Chi is suitable for almost anyone, from healthy people to those who have disease. This is because its movements are never forced—the muscles (肌肉) are relaxed.
The word “Tai Chi” comes from Taoism (道家), which thinks that inaction, opposite to (相反的) action, is the way to solve problems. That’s why Tai Chi movements are slow and soft. It is not used to fight an enemy. That doesn’t mean it is weak though. The secret of Tai Chi is to use softness to beat hardness.
Yin-yang diagram (图形) shows how ancient Chinese people saw the world. The world is full of yin and yang: dark and light, soft and hard, male (男性) and female (女性), life and death. But they do not absolutely (完全的) opposite each other. After a dark night, the sun will rise. Leaves fall in autumn but grow in spring. Everything keeps changing—that’s how we should see the world.
Tai Chi also pays attention to the balance (平衡) between yin and yang. For example, if you work too hard and feel tired, you have too much“yang”. So it’s time for you to calm down and get more“yin”. This idea of keeping a healthy balance can be used in almost everything in life. It makes Tai Chi far more than just a Chinese Kungfu.
8. Tai Chi almost suits anyone because ________.
A. it is a symbol of Chinese culture and philosophy
B. it tells people how to breathe deeply and naturally
C. when people do Tai Chi, their muscles are relaxed
9. In Paragraph 3, what does the word “inaction” mean?
A. 无为 B. 行动 C. 治理
10. Which might be a pair of yin and yang according to the passage?
A. Father arid son. B. Water and ice. C. Day and night.
11. Which of the statements about Tai Chi is TRUE?
A. When you play Tai Chi, you will feel relaxed and peaceful.
B. Tai Chi movements are slow and soft, so they can’t be used to beat hardness.
C. The idea of keeping a balance between yin and yang can’t be used in many things in life.

Willam Shakespeare was born in a small town in England in 1564. He was educated at the King’s New School, a free grammar school that was located in Stratford. There he studied the basic Latin text and grammar. 据说在学校,比起数学他更喜欢学习语言。 Later, he moved to London and began to work as a writer. By 1594, he had become an important writer in London.
Whether comedies or tragedies (悲剧), Shakespeare’s plays always touch people’s hearts. His comedies make a joke on human weaknesses and always have happy endings. In A Midsummer Night’s Dream, fairies (仙子). play magical tricks on people who get lost in the woods. His tragedies, however, can be very dark. Macbeth tells the story about a man who becomes a king by killing a lot of people.
Of course, Shakespeare wrote his plays over 400 years ago. His English is very different from that of today. But it doesn’t influence his popularity. His plays which have been translated into other languages are also popular in the world.
William Shakespeare died on April 23, 1616. He was 52 years old at the time of his death. But Shakespeare truly has a great influence on English and even many other languages.

10. Which might be a pair of yin and yang according to the passage?

11. Which of the statements about Tai Chi is TRUE?
A. When you play Tai Chi, you will feel relaxed and peaceful.

In A Midsummer Night’s Dream, fairies (仙子). play magical tricks on people who get lost in the woods. His tragedies, however, can be very dark. Macbeth tells the story about a man who becomes a king by killing a lot of people.

William Shakespeare died on April 23, 1616. He was 52 years old at the time of his death. But Shakespeare truly has a great influence on English and even many other languages.
