As you probably know, learning a foreign language is sometimes challenging. But it can also be fun. We spend hundreds of hours at school trying to get our tongues round different vocabulary and grammar in order to earn a qualification. But learning to speak a second language is more than just passing an exam-it opens doors to new opportunities, helps you to communicate with others and makes travelling overseas more satisfactory.
It might come as a surprise that the number of teenagers learning foreign languages in UK secondary schools has dropped by 45% since the turn of the millennium. German and French have fallen the most-these languages from two of the UK’s closest trading partners have declined at GCSE level. Another survey of secondary schools suggests a third of students have dropped at least one language from their GCSE exam options. There are some reasons for this, including many students’ opinion that languages are difficult. Others have questioned the need for a second language when translation technology is advancing.
Matthew Fell, chief UK policy director for business group the CBI, believes that “The decline in language learning in schools must be reversed, or else the UK will be less competitive globally and young people less prepared for the modern world.” But even for those who are eager to study another language, the opportunity is being reduced. In Scotland, for example, foreign language subjects are being pressed out of many secondary school timetables with some head teachers blaming pressure on the curriculum.
However, some native English speakers have admitted the benefits of speaking another tongue. Cassandra Scott, from Edinburgh, studied three languages in her final year at school. She is now a freelance translator in Edinburgh, and says “Learning languages at school really set the course for my career.”
1.How does the author show the fact that fewer people have learned foreign languages?
A.By offering background information.
B.By giving specific examples.
C.By analyzing underlying reasons.
D.By showing personal research.
2.What does the underlined word “reversed” in paragraph 3 mean?
A.Developed rapidly.
B.Pushed quickly.
C.Changed completely.
D.Maintained properly.
3.What can we learn from the passage?
A.A fulfilling overseas travel requires another foreign language.
B.Learning languages at school may contribute to one’s future career.
C.Native English speakers benefit more from speaking another tongue.
D.With the translation technology, there’s no need to learn foreign languages.
4.What’s the purpose of the passage?
A.To criticize people’s ignorance of foreign languages.
B.To stress the significance of learning foreign languages.
C.To state the result of dropping learning foreign languages.
D.To raise people’s awareness of protecting native languages.

Being a teenager can be hard, for you have to face a lot of difficult problems, but a new program called Nfusion is working hard to help teens with mental health needs. Nfusion gives teenagers classes where they study or discuss some troubling subjects. Drugs and bullying (欺凌) are just a few of the topics that are discussed during the class on Saturday.
“I had a bad attitude,” said 17-year-old Titeana Davis. Davis went through the Nfusion Program last year. The teen, who once had trouble with her attitude towards others, says the program has changed her life, “They taught me that a bad attitude is not going to get you anywhere. It doesn’t matter if other people treat you wrong; you still treat them how you want to be treated and it helped me a lot” said Davis.
Nfusion is a new program that meets teens’ mental health needs and provides help for their families. The program is designed to help teens aged 14-21 live through a difficult period. “They’re still growing, still developing and still there are a lot of things they don’t know how to address. So this is a good program for them to be a part of,” said Lakicha Jernigan, who worked for the Nfusion Program.
Teens like Davis are just a few who have come through the program successfully. Now, thanks to Nfusion, Davis says she’s looking forward to a bright future. “After I graduate from college, I want to work at a primary school and I want to be a second-grade teacher,” added Davis.
Nfusion is a System of Care initiative (倡议) and is working with the Mississippi Transitional Outreach Project, a project of the Mississippi Department of Mental Health. The System of Care provides community-based services to help youth with serious mental health needs and their families.
5.What’s the purpose of Nfusion?
A.To provide teens with some programs.
B.To help teens fight for a better career.
C.To help teens receive a good education.
D.To meet the mental health needs of teens.
6.What can we know about Titeana Davis before Nfusion?
A.She didn’t go to school as often as her parents expected her to.
B.She often had fights with her classmates and neighbors.
C.She didn’t take a right attitude towards people around her.
D.She often forgot things and misunderstood her parents.
7.What does the underlined word “address” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A.Look for. B.Deal with.
C.Cut out. D.Learn from.
8.What happened to Davis after going through Nfusion?
A.She became a teacher. B.She worked for Nfusion.
C.She went back to school. D.She got along with others.

There has recently been a lot of arguments about homework. As a teacher, I strongly believe in the benefits of quality homework. Besides preparing students for university life, it teaches important life skills that will benefit students for the rest of their lives.
Some people argue that homework is causing stress and depression to rise in children. But to blame homework for these health problems is wrong. Social pressures cause more stress for teenagers than homework. If people are really concerned about the health of students, they would spend more time solving the problems that cause pressure in schools rather than complaining about homework.
In addition, those who are opposed to homework believe that students end up hating the time spent instead of enjoying learning. However, the problem is the type of homework being assigned (布置). It is the quality not quantity (数量) of homework that will improve students’ learning and their enjoyment. Repetitive worksheets where students memorize historical dates and names or solve math problems over and over again are less beneficial than more creative project-based homework.
Primary students will eventually be in middle and high school where homework will be assigned. If they have no preparation in primary schools, they will have the stress of suddenly trying to adjust to life with homework later. The important thing is to assign just enough homework to help students learn.
In fact, homework allows parents to be aware of what their child is doing at school and how well their academic and thinking skills are developing. If they notice that their child is taking an unreasonable amount of time completing their homework, parents can call the teacher’s attention to the problem.
Finally, homework helps to teach students important study and life skills that will set them up for future success. They learn how to manage their time so that they can finish their homework and other activities. At times, they might struggle to complete the homework, but by working through it, they learn not to give up. These are skills that will not only benefit them in their academic life but in their adult lives as well.
We should recognize quality homework can help to show children the connection between what they are learning in school and how it can be applied outside of schools, and it should allow the students to have fun while doing it. Learning should not only be contained within a classroom; it should be extended to all areas of our lives.
9.According to the passage, quality homework can ________.
A.only be assigned at high school
B.cause pressures to rise in teenagers
C.have influence on students in many ways
D.draw parents’ attention to the problems it brings
10.What’s the author’s attitude towards homework in primary school?
A.Supportive. B.Critical. C.Doubtful. D.Unconcerned.
11.What does the underlined expression “opposed to” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A.Against. B.Worried about. C.Tired of. D.Favor.
12.Which would be the best title for the passage?
A.Pressures Caused by Homework
B.The Benefits of Quality Homework
C.Quality and Quantity of Homework
D.Different Opinions about Homework
